SARDELLA, CARLO, 84, of Ventnor, veteran newspaper reporter and radio commentator Carlo Sardella died Sunday after years of battling Alzheimer's Disease.
Sardella was best known locally for his years as a reporter for the Atlantic City Press and his radio commentary on several local stations, including WFPG-AM and WMID-AM. Throughout his career, he covered everything from war to homicides, organized crime and local politics, but Sardella's passion was the human interest story which effectively combined his love of people and his gift for feature writing.
His more than 50-year career in journalism began with the Vineland Times Journal in the 1930s where he got his first reporting job at 16-years of age. World War II began and he soon joined the U.S. Army, where he served as a field correspondent based in England and France, for Army publications such as Stars and Stripes. Here he covered battles, bombings, but was perhaps most haunted by his own coverage of the liberation of Nazi concentration camps and his interviews with Nazi War criminals. His love of the human interest story was evident then through his many articles depicting the bravery of nurses who served overseas.
Upon returning to Vineland, he married his sweetheart Rita Pasterino, who he had met before the war while he was covering her high school basketball game for the Journal. The couple moved to Atlantic City, where he first worked ad day city editor of the Atlantic City Tribune, which merged with the Press in 1954, although he joined the Press in 1950. During this time, he was perhaps best known for starting Resorts Ripples, a column that highlighted local news and newsmakers.
While with the Press he was a five-time winner of the Press Club of Atlantic City's trophy for outstanding national story of the year.
Sardella's reporting career took him to the Levittown Press, where he was managing editor of the evening edition, the Camden Courier Post and for most of the 60s, Sardella was a reporter and columnist for the Philadelphia Inquirer. During this time, he was a three time winner of the annual Philadelphia Press Association's trophy for best news story of the year. He left the Inquirer in 1973 to join former New Jersey Congressman Charles Sandman's campaign for governor.
Sardella subsequently became a correspondent for the New York Times, working out of his Ventnor home, covering primarily Atlantic City and contributing feature stories. During this time period Sardella continued to contribute to the Press's supplement "South Jersey Living." He also dabbled in public relations and had a radio show called Page 3 on WMID-AM, which focused on local people, and sometimes his own life. He retired in 1989 after Rita died and he moved to Florida for several years before becoming ill and moving back to New Jersey to be closer to his family.
Sardella was also a devoted father, who made many sacrifices so that each of his four daughters would go to college and live happy successful lives. He loved to play the bass and was part of several local bands. Back in the 50s he was part of the Eddie Gray Trio, which played at the Beach Club, a restaurant/bar he owned on Atlantic Ave. in Margate. In later years, he enjoyed playing regularly with Angie Marindino's band. Sardella also was an active participant in the Big Brother program and was an official for local high school football games. But perhaps many wold remember him from the Atlantic City boardwalk, where for decades he rode his bike nearly every day, rain or shine.
Sardella is survived by four daughters, Barbara Sardella and her husband Steve Barton, of New Freedom, PA; Janet Toland, and her husband Michael of Atlantic City; Nancy Woolley of Wellington, FL and Sandra Sardella White, and her husband Robert, of Needham, MA.
He is also survived by seven granddaughters: Kim Wood and her husband John David of Egg Harbor Township; Lauren, Lindsay and Rita Woolley of Wellington, FL; Samantha, Allyson and Jessica White of Needham, MA; and one great-granddaughter Madlyn Wood of Egg Harbor Township.
Sardella is also survived by his special family at Absecon Manor. The Sardella family is forever grateful to the nursing and activities staff at Byron Hall for their love and devotion, especially Sharon, Arestes, Carolyn, Corey, Patty, Winnie, Susan, Ramon, Etta, Ryan and Annie.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. James Church, Ventnor where friends may call after 9 a.m. Burial is private.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to the Delaware Valley Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, Robert Morris Building, 100 N. 17th Street, 2nd floor, Philadelphia, PA 19103.
Arrangements by the George H. Wimberg Funeral Home, Ventnor.
