Donohue, William B.
Coast Guard

William B. Donohue, 76 of Cape May Court House, former Stone Harbor Chief of Police, passed away on May 19th following a courageous battle with cancer surrounded by his loving wife and large loving family.

Chief Donohue was a lifelong Cape May County resident. He was born and raised in Wildwood, New Jersey. Graduated from Wildwood Catholic High School in 1952 and served overseas with the United States Coast Guard from 1952 through 1956.

Bill began his police career as a seasonal officer with the Wildwood Police Department in 1957.

In 1959 he joined the Stone Harbor Police Department and progressed through the ranks to become Chief of Police on January 1, 1974.

He is a graduate of Stockton State College, the New Jersey State Police Municipal Academy in Sea Girt, New Jersey, the Pennsylvania Institute of Criminology and the 91st Session of the F.B.I. National Academy in Quantico, Virginia. He was an adjunct Professor for Atlantic Community College where he taught Police Administration.

Donohue served as a Scout Master for Stone Harbor Troop No. 70 for many years and also worked as a Life Guard for the Stone Harbor and Wildwood Beach Patrols.

He was a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the New Jersey Association of Chiefs of Police and was a past President of the Cape May County Police Chiefs Association.

Chief Donohue served on the New Jersey Police Training Committee and was instrumental in establishing current practices and procedures for Class II Seasonal Officers in New Jersey. He was also a member of the original committee that was responsible for bringing a Police Academy to Cape May County.

He served 25 years with the Stone Harbor Police Department, then served as an Under-Sheriff with the Cape May County Sheriff's Department, where he started the county's first K9 Search and Rescue Unit.

He was also well respected for his ability to read "track sign" and shared his knowledge on the subject with other law enforcement agencies.

Bill was very active in the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary and attended the weekly graduations at the Coast Guard Academy on behalf of the Auxiliary. He was also a member of the United States Coast Guard Combat Veterans Association.

He was a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus and served as a Eucharistic Minister at our Lady of Angels Church in Cape May Court House.

He loved to be outdoors, fishing, hunting or body surfing in the ocean and passed those hobbies on to his many children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Lenore (Lennie) Juliana, four sons; Edward (Megan), Timothy (Carole), Joseph (Kristen), Michael (Jeanne). Three daughters; Judy Donohue, Peggy McKinley (Dan), Mary Ulbrich (Karl), 19 grandchildren; Gabe, Josh, Luke, Chris, Chelsea, Trevor, Tyler, Kyle, Peter, Liam, Anna, Gloria, Jorah, Eric, Juliana, Eve, Natalia, Bridget, William and one great grandchild, Otter Weston, with a second great grandchild expected in September. He is also survived by his sisters, Patty Campbell and Mame Farrell.

A viewing will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Radzieta Funeral Home, 9 Hand Avenue, Cape May Court House on Sunday evening, May 22nd.

Visitation to be held from 10 am to 11:30 am on Monday, May 23rd at Our Lady of the Angels Roman Catholic Church located in Cape May Court House, New Jersey, at the intersection of Mechanic Street and the Garden State Parkway. Visitation to be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 12 noon.

Burial with full military and police honors will then be held at St. Mary's cemetery on Seashore Road in Lower Township.

Conover, Eileen "Dolly"

Eileen "Dolly" Conover, age 87, of Dias Creek, NJ, died on Monday, May 16, 2011. She was born in Philadelphia, PA, the daughter of the late Ernest and Edna Mathews Miller and was raised in Stone Harbor, NJ.

She was a member of the Green Creek Community Church and had helped her husband, Russell, with driving the truck on the farm and helped in the plumbing business.

In addition to her husband, Russell, of nearly 69 years of marriage, she is survived by a son, James F. (Susan); a daughter in law, Patricia; nine grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; and four great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, George in 1998.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 19, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at the Green Creek Community Church, Route 47, Green Creek, NJ, where friends may visit from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Interment will be in the Green Creek Methodist cemetery.

Ryan, Sr., Thomas P.

Thomas P. Ryan, Sr., age 88, of Avalon, NJ, died on Monday, May 16, 2011. He was born in Chester, PA, the son of the late Thomas J. and Elizabeth Egner Ryan. He was a summer resident since 1967 moving permanently in 1981.

He was a member of Maris Stella Church and an Army Veteran of World War II. He enjoyed fishing and playing golf. He is survived by his sons: Thomas P. Ryan, Jr. of Kansas City, MO and Michael J. Ryan and his wife, Randee Spelkoman of Philadelphia, PA; a brother, William "Butch" Ryan; a granddaughter, Jennifer Hill and her husband, Adam and their two children, Ryan and Lila. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah on August 21, 1992.

The Funeral Liturgy will be said on Thursday, May 19, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at the Chapel of Maris Stella, 25th Street and First Avenue, Avalon, NJ. Interment will be in the Cape May County Veterans cemetery. For those who desire, memorials may be sent to the Archmere Academy, 3600 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont, DE 19703.

Rich, Sr., Joseph D.
Air Force

Joseph D. Rich, Sr., of Cape May Court House, NJ died on May 14, 2011.

Mr. Rich was born and raised in Lawndale in Northeast Philadelphia. He graduated from LaSalle High School in 1946 and was immediately drafted into the U.S. Air Force, and he served in the Pacific Theater. He moved to Avalon, NJ from Wayne, PA in 1967, and then later moved to Cape May Court House. He was a bartender at Henny's Restaurant in Stone Harbor before starting and operating his own painting contracting business for 15 years. He was a member of the Sea Isle City Players and other community Theatres, and he performed in the Musical Memories Variety Shows as George Burns, along with his wife, Doris, who played Gracie Allen. He served as President of the Middle Township AARP, and also served as their Legislative Representative for many years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Cape May Court House, and was a beloved member of the church choir. Joseph was also a Pastoral Care Volunteer at Burdette Tomlin Memorial Hospital, and was a member of the Middle Township Senior Center.

Mr. Rich is survived by his wife, Doris; two sons, Joseph D. Jr. and John; two daughters, Marianne and Barbara; one stepson, G. Daniel Keen; 12 grandchildren; and 18 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son Robert James Rich in 2003.

Services will be held at the First United Methodist Church, 1 Church Street, Cape May Court House on Saturday, May 21 at noon. Interment will be in the Cape May County Veterans cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in care of the First United Methodist Church Building Fund, 1 Church Street, Cape May Court House, NJ 08210.

Stapleton, Jane L.

Jane L. Stapleton, 85, of Avalon, passed away on Friday, May 13, 2011. Born in Bala Cynwyd, PA to the late John M. and Helen (Coyle) Lynch, she moved to Avalon in 1972 from Ardmore, PA. She was a member of St. Brendan the Navigator Parish Maris Stella Church in Avalon and was retired from the Borough of Avalon. She was a longtime volunteer at Burdette Tomlin Memorial Hospital and a member of the Avalon Seniors. She enjoyed ceramics, shopping, playing bridge, and swimming.

Mrs. Stapleton is survived by her children, Helen Hession, Edward P. Stapleton, Jr., Bob Stapleton, and Jane Rusco; her brother, John M. Lynch, Jr.; her nieces, Patty Bevlock and Pam Langworthy; 12 grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward P. Stapleton, Sr.; and her sister, Patsy Tolan.

Funeral Mass will be said on Monday, May 16, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Brendan the Navigator Parish Maris Stella Church, 50th Street and Dune Drive, Avalon, where viewing will begin at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be at Calvary cemetery, Conshohocken, PA on Tuesday, May 17 at 12:00 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to St. Brendan the Navigator Parish, 5012 Dune Drive, Avalon, NJ 08202.

Ruggero, John C.

John C. Ruggero, 65, of Lederach, PA passed away on Wednesday, May 11, 2011 in Avalon Manor, NJ. He was born in Philadelphia, PA to Carmen and Viola Ruggero, and later served in the U.S. Army before working for the U.S. Postal Service. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

He is survived by his wife, Martha; sister, Geraldine Ruggero; and nephew, Mark Koegel.

Services are private at the request of the family. Donations may be made in John's name to Disabled American Veterans, PO Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301.

Farmer, Anthony J.
Navy

Anthony J. Farmer, 62, of Mays Landing, passed away on Saturday, May 7, 2011 at Shore Memorial Hospital. Born in New Haven, CT to the late George and Lettie (Jay) Farmer, he moved to Mays Landing in 2006 from Millville. A Navy Veteran of the Vietnam, he was employed by NJ Bell. He loved playing golf and was an avid basketball fan, being involved with the basketball career of his son, Anthony.

Mr. Farmer is survived by his children, Jacqueline Farmer, Pamela Walker, Andre White, Stacie Lee, Jervon Lee, Anthony L. Farmer, Derrick Gattis, and Brian Bowen; his companion, Frances Brown; his siblings Isaiah Farmer, Daniel Davis, Leroy Farmer, Madison "Buck" Davis, and Georgella Owens; and his eight grandchildren, Heaven Robinson, Bridgette Walker, Eric Walker, Anthony Farmer, Jr., John Slater, Tyquan Lee, Dapree Holden, and Christopher Johnson.

Funeral service will be held on Friday, May 13, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Radzieta Funeral Home, 9 Hand Avenue, Cape May Court House. There is no viewing. Interment will be in Household of Ruth cemetery, Whitesboro.

Schneider, Megan V.

Megan V. Schneider, age 51, of Eldora, NJ, died on Saturday, May 7, 2011, at her home. She was born in Souderton, PA, the daughter of Marie Watson Helinek and the late Frank Helinek and had been an area resident for thirty years.

She was a member of St. Casimir's R.C. Church of Woodbine. She was a pharmacist's secretary at the now Cape Regional Medical Center.

Being multi-talented, Megan enjoyed crafts and playing music but most of all enjoyed being with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, Philip L.; three children: Melissa D., Kristen J. and Philip Chadwick Schneider; her mother, Marie Helinek; several brothers and sisters and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 13, 2011, at 6:00 p.m. at the Radzieta Funeral Home, 9 Hand Avenue, Cape May Court House., NJ. Interment is private. There is no viewing. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, PO Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312.

Olszewski, William A.
Air Force

William A. Olszewski, 72, of Sea Isle City, passed away on Friday, May 6, 2011. Born in Philadelphia to the late William and Regina Olszewski, he has lived here since 1984 after moving from Folcroft, Delaware County, PA. An Air Force Veteran of the Vietnam War, he was a member of St. Joseph's R.C. Church in Sea Isle City and past member of the VFW Post 1963 Sea Isle City. He enjoyed watching football, especially the Eagles. He was employed by Sea Isle City Public Works.

Mr. Olszewski is survived by his wife, Patricia; his daughter, Lorri Hager; his stepson, William Simpson; his brother, John Olszewski; his four granddaughters; five grandsons; and eight great grandchildren.

Funeral Mass will be said on Monday, May 9, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph's R.C. Church, 44th Street and Landis Avenue, Sea Isle City, where viewing will begin at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be in Resurrection cemetery, Clermont. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 1 Union Street, Suite 301, Robbinsville, NJ 08691.

Keith (Shinn), James M.
Navy

James M. Keith (Shinn), 44, of Lower Township, passed away suddenly May 3, 2011. Born in Cape May Court House, NJ, he was a graduate of Lower Cape May Regional High School in 1984. In 1987, Jim joined the Navy where he proudly served his country for 20 years. After his retirement with an Honorable Discharge, he continued his service to the Navy as a civilian. During his time on active duty in Wales, UK, he met his wife of 17 years, Tina Keith; also survived by his two sons, Nathan Keith and Devon Keith; his mother Diane Shinn; sister Madonna Sill and husband Jason; father-in-law and mother-in-law Colin and Kathleen Phillips of Wales; sisters-in-law Toni Kucyj (Simon) and Kymberley Phillips of Wales; his uncles Robert Keith and Dennis Yearicks; aunts Donna Webb, Denise Uhlman, Darlene Nock, Brenda Douglas and many cousins.

Jim enjoyed life to the fullest, and was a loving husband and father. He was very much involved in sports. He loved coaching soccer and played for many years. He was an avid fan of the Eagles and the Phillies. Jim will be sadly missed by his family and friends and greatly remembered for all he contributed in his life.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 10, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Radzieta Funeral Home, 9 Hand Avenue, Cape May Court House, where viewing will begin at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be in the Cape May County Veterans cemetery. Pfanstiel, Geraldine Arabelle

Geraldine Arabelle Pfanstiel, 65, of Avalon, passed away on Tuesday, May 3, 2011. She was born May 6, 1945 in Margaret Mace Hospital in North Wildwood, NJ. She was the ninth of eleven children born to Matthew Reid and Leola Priscilla Francis. She is survived by six sisters and four brothers. Geraldine attended Middle Township Public Schools, and was a former member of Mount Olive Baptist Church in Cape May Court House.

In 1965, Gerry married Wallace Brown who predeceased her in death. Five children were born to that union: Stephanie Eileen, Patricia Ann, Wallace Edward, William Everette, and Warren Eric Brown. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.

Gerry worked for many years as a health care provider, and retired in 2010 after fifteen years with the Tattler Group Home for the ARC of Cape May County. She had a green thumb and loved making things grow. Many plants adorned her home.

Geraldine is survived by her husband, Donald Pfanstiel, a thoughtful, close, and loving companion for twenty seven years; and his three daughters - Amy, Morgen, and Jill.

She is also survived by ten sisters and brothers: Gloria (Elvin), Catherine, Leola, Rhoda (Roy), Matthew (Elaine), Hazel (Calvin), James (Sharon), Peter (Agapeta), Juanita (Robert), and Joseph (Betty).

Geraldine leaves 15 grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and twenty seven nieces and nephews to mourn her passing. Gerry will also be missed by a host of other relatives, her co-workers, and friends - especially her longtime friend since sixth grade, Julia Wise of Whitesboro.

God has been good to our family. We were known to our children as "the eleven". With Gerry's passing, the chain is broken, and so are our hearts.

A viewing will be held on Saturday, Mary 7, 2011 from 10 to 11 a.m. at The Mount Olive Baptist Church, East Atlantic Avenue, Cape May Court House, New Jersey. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. immediately following the viewing. Interment will be at The Household of Ruth cemetery, Whitesboro, New Jersey.
