William C. May

Upper Deerfield Twp Resident
William C. May, 87, of Upper Deerfield Township died early Saturday morning September 28, 2002 at S.J. Hospital – Bridgeton where he had been admitted Friday evening.

The wife of Ruth A. (nee Duckworth) May, he was born in Phillipsburg, N.J. and was the son of the late William O. and Elizabeth Hoag May. For the last two and a half years, Mr. May had lived in Upper Deerfield Township and before that was a resident of Montana, Harmony Township in Warren County for seventy years.

He worked as a machinist for the Ingersol-Rand Company in Phillipsburg in their Cameron Pump Division. He was employed there for forty-two years until retiring in 1979.

A member of the Montana United Methodist Church in Harmony Township for more, than fifty years, Mr. May was also a fifty-year member and past master of Warren Lodge, No. 13, F. & A.M. of Belvidere. In addition, he was a member of the Scottish Rite, Valley of Trenton and a former member of the Harmony Seniors. Mr. May was a member and former superintendent of the Montana cemetery Association and had belonged to several antique car clubs. He had attended Belvidere High School in Belvidere.

Mr. and Mrs. May had celebrated their sixty-fourth wedding anniversary in August.

Predeceased by his only daughter, Bernice C. Smith in October of 2000, he is survived by his wife, his son-in-law, Jack W. Smith of Upper Deerfield Township, three grandchildren, Scott R. Smith of Upper Deerfield Township, Susan M. Powell of Medford and Shelly A. Bietsch of Shiloh, six great grandchildren and one sister Marian Tracy of Kissimmee, FL. In addition to his daughter, he was also preceded in death by a brother James R. May and an infant sister, Phoebe May.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning October 2nd at the Rupell Funeral Home, 465 Memorial Parkway in Phillipsburg.

The interment will be made at the Montana cemetery in Harmony Township.

Friends will be received at the funeral home Tuesday evening from 7 until 9 and also Wednesday morning one hour prior to the service. A Maonic Service will be held at 8 P.M. Tuesday.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Montana United Methodist Church, 470 Mountain Road, Washington, N.J. 07882.

Local funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton.

Edna Hurff Walters

Elwood Resident
Edna Hurff Walters (nee Glancey), 86, of Elwood, N.J. died Saturday morning September 28, 2002 at the Renaissance Nursing Center in Bridgeton after a long-term illness.

The wife of the late Earl T. Walters who died in 1967, she was the daughter of the late David B. Glancey and Ethel G. Brown.

Realtives and friends are invited to attend a graveside service on Wednesday, October 2, 2002 at 1 P.M. at Laurel Lawn cemetery located on Old Deerfield Pike in Upper Deerfield Township.

Pastor Ken Larter of the Deerfield Presbyterian Church will be officiating the service.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of The Freitag Funeral Home 137 W. Commerce St. Bridgeton N.J. 08302.

John H. Saunderlin

Quinton Twp Resident
John H. Saunderlin, 77, of Quinton Township died Monday morning September 30, 2002 at his home. He had been in declining health and seriously ill for the last six months.

The husband of Mildred (nee Baeder) Saunderlin, he was born in Salem and was the son of the late J. Edward and Mary Hogate Saunderlin. A lifelong Quinton Township resident, he had lived at his current address since 1958.

Mr. Saunderlin was a US Navy Veteran of World War II. He served in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters. In the Atlantic the first ship he served on was cut in half by a tanker and he was lucky to survive the accident. He later was involved in the liberation of Northern Africa. While serving in the Pacific, he participated in the battle of Guadal Canal and was involved with the liberation of the Philippines and the occupation of Japan.

Following his discharge, Mr. Saunderlin worked for thirty years as a laboratory technician at the DuPont Company’s Chambersworks Plant in Deepwater.

He was a member of the DuPont Veterans Association and the Pairs and Spares Travel Club. He particularly enjoyed his grandchildren and attending his Naval reunions.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Margaret Todd and her husband Clayton of Mauricetown, four grandchildren, Meghan Myers, Leslie Kraus, Jonathan Todd and Brian Todd, five great grandchildren, two sisters, Claire Smick of Elsinboro and Doris Sears of Columbia, Missouri, three brothers, Lester Saunderlin and Edward Saunderlin both of Quinton Township and William Saunderlin of Millville and one brother in law, Paul Baeder of Chesapeake, VA.

Funeral services will be held Thursday morning October 3rd at 11 o’clock at the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton with Rev. John Robbins of the Haleyville-Mauricetown Methodist parish officiating.

The interment will be made at Fernwood Memorial Park in Hopewell Township.

Friends will be received at the funeral home Thursday morning one hour prior to the services.

Memorial contributions in Mr. Saunderlin’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1400 W. Landis Avenue, Vineland, N.J. 08360.

Elizabeth A. “Betty” Rogers

Community Leader
Elizabeth A. “Betty” Rogers, longtime community leader and co-owner of Don Rogers, Inc. of Bridgeton died Sunday evening October 6, 2002 at Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center in Camden. She had been seriously ill for the last seven weeks. Mrs. Rogers, who was 70, was a longtime resident of Upper Deerfield Township.

Born in Greenwich, she attended Bridgeton High School with the Class of 1949. In 1953, she and her husband, Donald O. Rogers, established Don Rogers, a excavating and road construction company. Originally located on Ewing Street in Bridgeton, they started as a company digging cellars and doing finish-grading work. As the business grew they moved to the current Reeves Road location and became involved in site work and excavation for building sites, road construction, paving and athletic field and tennis court construction. Upon incorporation in 1978, Mrs. Rogers assumed the corporate responsibility of Secretary/Treasurer and after her husband’s death in 1989, her son; Donald O. Rogers Jr. became company president.

A leader in the community for several years, Mrs. Rogers was an active member of St. John’s First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bridgeton. She was a member of Church Council, the chairperson of the finance board and the Lutheran Women’s Mission. In addition, she was a member of the Luther League and had been active for years with church dinners.

Mrs. Rogers was an integral part of the hospice movement in southern New Jersey. She joined the Board of Directors of HospiceCare of S.J. in 1992 and served until 1999. For every year from 1993 until last week she had served as the chairperson for the annual Hospice Lobster Bake and even though she no longer served on the HospiceCare Board of Directors she continued to serve as the chairperson of the Fund Raising Committee. Under her guidance funds have been raised for hospice patients and their families in excess of $100,000. In October of 2000, Mrs. Rogers was honored by the N.J. Hospice and Palliative Care Organization as the “Community Leader of the Year” with the “Spirit of Hospice Award” for her untiring efforts on behalf of hospice.

She was also a member of Soroptomist International of Cumberland County since 1991. Over the years she served as delegate, treasurer, director and second vice president in charge of community service. In May of 1999, she was recognized and honored by the Soroptomist Club with the “Women Helping Women Award”, which recognizes women who use their resources, talents and influence to help other women achieve their potential.

She was a member of a card club for over forty years and enjoyed traveling.

The daughter of Anna Richey Dickinson of Pittsgrove Township and the late Watson Richey, she is survived by one son, Donald O. Rogers Jr. and his wife

Urve, five grandchildren, Kristen Cornatzer and her husband Joseph, Ingrid White and her husband Michael Sr., Marianne V. Rogers, Donald O. Rogers III and Karen A. Rogers, one great grandson, Michael White Jr. and two sisters, Marilyn Lupton of Port Norris and Dorothy Stratton of Upper Deerfield Township. Mrs. Rogers is also survived by several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

The funeral will originate at the Freitag Funeral Home, 137 W. Commerce St., Bridgeton on Thursday October 10th at 10:30 A.M. and will be followed by funeral services at 11 A.M. at St. John’s First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Oak and Giles Streets, Bridgeton.

The interment will be made at Fernwood Memorial Park in Hopewell Township.

Friends will be received at the funeral home Wednesday evening from 6 until 9 and also Thursday morning from 9:30 until 10:30.

Memorial contributions are suggested in Mrs. Rogers’ memory to St. John’s First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Oak and Giles Sts., Bridgeton, N.J. 08302 or to HospiceCare of S.J., 2848 S. Delsea Drive, Vineland, N.J. 08360.

Roland Westerby

Pittsgrove Twp Resident
Roland Westerby, 90, of Pittsgrove Township died early Sunday morning October 6, 2002 at his home following an extended illness.

Born in Berlin, Mr. Westerby was a resident of Pittsgrove Township for the last twenty-three years. Before living in Pittsgrove he had lived in Cedarbrook for four years, Nebraska and Marlton Lakes. He also had been a resident of Berlin for thirty-one years. He was the husband of Charlotte (nee Trout) Westerby and the son of the late Thomas and Ruth Ann Ramsey Westerby.

Mr. Westerby was employed for several years as an insulator and pipe coverer with Asbestos Workers, Local #14 in Philadelphia.

He was a member of the S.J. Beagle Club of West Hampton and the Delsea Beagle Club in Elmer. In addition, he attended the Faith Fundamental Church in Pittsgrove.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Roland Eric Westerby and his wife Janis of Grand Island, Nebraska, four grandsons, Jon, Jeffrey, Mike and Douglas Westerby and four great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Thomas W. Westerby in 1990 and a daughter in law, Carolyn Westerby in 1997.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Westerby’s memory to HospiceCare of S.J., 2848 S. Delsea Drive, Vineland, N.J. 08360.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Freitag Funeral Home, Bridgeton.
