Josephine San Antonio Bailey

Born March 5th, 1923 - Died June 16th, 2006

How does someone sum up the essence of a person's life? How can a son say to a mother just how much he loves her and that he will miss her forever? What is the measure of an individual's character and just how did they affect the world around them? These questions are answered in the love and appreciation a person shows for the life they are given, what they did to help others and how they live in the time they are given. My mom was exactly that kind of person; she was someone who could make anyone smile and shared everything she had to give.

Born in 1923 in Brooklyn New York, Mom was one of seven sisters. From an early age, my Mom had an independence that defined her as a woman of great strength and determination. Mom studied needlecraft as a profession and in the 1940's she entertained soldiers as a singer, performing with stars of that day as Glen Miller to doing duets with Frank Sinatra. She served as a care giver during World War II, offering comfort and compassion to the fighting men who needed a smile and hope.

Mom was more than a person of compassion; she was also a great artist as well. In the 1940's, Mom and her sisters operated a bridal gown business called "Seven Sisters". Finding her talents lay in fashion, Mom found her career and headed in that direction to fill her desires for creativity and design. By the mid 1950's the name Josephine Bailey was know though out New York as one to the most dynamic fashion designers of her time. Mom gave one account in the past where she had stood on the corner where Macys is today. In 1957, that street corner in New York was the center of fashion and each corner had a window display of that season's line. There was a day she knew that she was at the top when all four corner windows displayed her designs and line of clothing for that season.

Mom was married to Guy Dowel Bailey in 1957 and on May 20th, 1960, she gave birth to her son. She had always told me that her most precious treasure was the love she and I shared. It is uncommon when a mother and son can hold a close connection and bond that stretches though the years as we have. Her lessons of integrity, self reliance and personal worth tempered with tolerance and compassion were the things that mattered most to me. Those lessons gave me strength and made me proud to be her son. Mom's accomplishments are so many that even a feature film would not do them justice. But beyond all her accomplishments, the trends she set in fashion, the fame, the famous people she had known and had become friends with, it was her friends and church member Medford Oregon that gave her life joy. In the last days of her life, there was no sign of the sudden departure that was to come, all of our last conversations were filled with travel, exploring new places, her friends at home, family and where she would finally come to rest one day in Long Branch.

So, to all who knew mom with loving appreciation and a thankful heart, I truly wanted to let you all know just how much you meant to a woman of uncommon grace. She will be missed by so many and shall leave an empty place in many people's lives who loved and cared for her. Mom passed at Providence Hospital in Medford Oregon on Friday June 16 at 4:15 pm. She was the daughter of the late, Augustine and Angelina Santantonio. Surviving is a son, Kim Bailey; 6 sisters, Phyllis San Antonio, Mary Fierro, Rose San Antonio, Louise San Antonio, Yolanda Mancari, and Helen Butera; and several nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews.

Viewing will be held on Tuesday, June 27, from 2-4, 7-9 pm at the Damiano Funeral Home, 191 Franklin Ave, on the corner of Third Ave, Long Branch. Funeral Wednesday, at 9:30 am from the funeral home followed by a 10:30 am Mass at St Michael's R.C. Church, West End, Long Branch. Entombment will be at Woodbine Mausoleum, Oceanport. There are no words I personally can express that can ever show the gratitude to those who loved my mom and helped her in her those times of need. However, some have expressed that my mother, Josephine Bailey was thank you enough to them. With loving memories Kim Bailey.
