Fehrle, Aurora Katherine

Aurora Katherine Fehrle, 46, of Sea Isle City died on Friday, July 21, 2006 after a courageous four-year battle with breast cancer.

A Philadelphia native, she graduated from St. Hubert's Catholic High School in 1978 and from Temple University in 1984 with a degree in Social Administration focusing on the needs of children and the elderly.

For the last twenty-five years, she and her husband, Roger, have worked together in their family-owned masonry contractor business, Herman Fehrle & Sons, and raised their four children.

A communicant of St. Joseph's Church, a member of the Sea Isle City Yacht Club, and an avid scuba diver, Aurora cultivated a legacy of civic and political involvement for the betterment of the community. A fixture at youth sports events and PTA meetings, in 1993, Aurora envisioned, led, and coordinated the building of the much-loved community playground, Play By The Bay. In the process of building the playground, she built a community. For her efforts, she was recognized by the Madonna Maria Council #3560 of the Knights of Columbus as its 1994 Citizen of the Year and by the Greater Sea Isle City Chamber of Commerce with its 1994 Valentine's Day Special Sweetheart Award. She was a leader in the successful effort to change the school board in Sea Isle City to an elected school board and she advocated passionately for the building of a community center in Sea Isle.

Aurora used her illness as another opportunity for advocacy. While fighting her own disease, she supported advocacy and support groups such as the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Gilda's Club, and the Love of Linda Cancer Fund. Aurora envisioned a world without breast cancer and encouraged everyone she met to work toward that goal.

A centering force not only in community projects, but in the lives of many people, Aurora was a positive, life-affirming role model and a friend to everyone she met.

In addition to her husband, Roger Fehrle, Aurora is survived by their children, Katherine, Joseph, John Paul, and Jacob. She is also survived by her mother, Katherine Feeney; her father, John Lerro; her sister, MaryAnne Lerro; her brothers, Joseph Lerro and John Lerro; and many other relatives and friends.
