Gorman, William E.

William E. Gorman, 91, of Long Branch, New Jersey, passed on in his home over the weekend.

He is survived by his two good friends -- myself, Gwendolyn Galsworth, and my brother, Gary. We cared for him deeply.

Mr. Gorman had been a friend to the Galsworth family for over 40 years, staying as a renter in the various Galsworth rooming houses on Morris Avenue, next to the Long Branch Inn, Campbell Avenue in the big white house, and most recently, in the little brown house next door to that.

Less than a year ago, Mr. Gorman lost his own great friend, Bosco, a splendid liver & white St. Christopher Springer Spaniel, as fine and noble a being as one could ever want to know or pet.

Mr. Gorman inherited Bosco from my mother, Geraldine Galsworth, when she passed away at 91 in 1997.

The last few years were a struggle for Mr. Gorman. Arthritis, failing sight, and bad hearing made day-to-day living at home a challenge. But he doggedly persisted, refusing to consider, for even a moment, leaving his home for the assisted care that was repeatedly offered and urged.

A fiercely independent Irishman, William was born in Navasink 0n August 25, 1911. As pieced together through years of conversation, his childhood seems to have been a trying one. He adored his Mother.

Mr. Gorman was married in the 1930s to Greta Tremblay, “a smart and beautiful secretary.” The couple had a boy and a girl.

Mr. Gorman did two turns in the US Navy, the second in World War II when he saw many months of shipboard action in the Pacific. He was not afraid of death.

No story about Mr. Gorman would be complete without mentioning the joy he experienced around my now 20-year old nephew, Daniel Spencer Galsworth. As a toddler, Danny spent many weekends with the Galsworths -- and the bond between him and Mr. Gorman grew. Danny was a favored topic of reminiscence, always good for a hearty Irish laugh.

As chance would have it, I got to visit Mr. Gorman last weekend. Before I left, he asked me, as he struggled to get enough oxygen through the tube into his lungs, to tell Danny to “stop smoking – now -- so he can die a better way than me.”

Though a recluse, Mr. Gorman had a circle of loyal friends whom my brother and I wish to thank: George and Kathy Penta, Dr. Anthony Sahar, visiting nurse Dahlia Spencer, Ondine Galsworth, Scott and Linda Marlin, Janet and Herman Garced, and the folks at the Homestead Pharmacy.
