Hand, William "Bill"

Beloved son, beloved brother, Bill . . . gone from us now to be remembered. Born as William Herbert Hand on September 3, 1961, to Lewis Parker Hand, Sr. and Mary Emma (Neill) Hand, of West Wildwood, NJ, he was the baby of a large family. His siblings include Norma Holler, Lois Myers, Louise Hand-Mihalek, Mary Lou Bergold, Elizabeth Hand, Bonnie Hand and Lewis Hand, Jr.

Looking back we remember . . . Bill always had a sense of adventure and love of the water. His brother Lew remembers their earlier days of Dad, teaching him and Bill to crab at Shell Bay. It was normal for Bill to be lured away by his friends to go fishing, crabbing or boating and to bring a big old flounder home for Mom to cook up. Many years after his Dad passed on, Bill might quietly ride away on his bicycle to crab at Shell Bay where he would give a shoebee heck for trying to keep an undersized crab. His cooking up those crabs for all of us was a prelude to his later working at Seafood World where he was great at cooking, especially those scallops!

But as we are all multifaceted creatures, so was Bill. These remembrances just begin to describe the Bill we knew and loved. NASCAR racing was one of his passions. When his cell phone rang the buzz of racing engines roared into the room and he would chuckle in the way that was so Bill. Dale Earnhardt's #3 was a constant in his life, on shirts, jackets, teddy bear or hats. He was a true NASCAR fan. Off to the races with his friends could also mean the times he, Ron, Donna and little Ronnie would save seats at the Demolition Derby for his sister Louise and niece Elizabeth. Standing on Cow Town's highest bleacher seats Bill cheered the crunching cars as they jostled for the cup. And least we forget . . . Go Eagles! Go Phillies! Yes, Bill was a fan.

But, these are more recent memories. Looking back, Bill's earliest days were spent in West Wildwood but he also lived a short time in Litiz, PA, seeing the world of the Amish his mother loved, experiencing a new world where he got to play in a barn with his brother Lew, see cows up close, and laughed to see the pigs get loose and spook his sisters who were sun bathing in the yard. The family next moved to Willingboro, NJ where Lew and Bill had their Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn type adventures with their friends in the nearby wooded areas so appealing to young boys but so different from their seashore days. Home again to Cape May County, the family came to reside in Mayville, and Bill this time had the best of both worlds for boyhood adventures, with the water nearby and the woods along the railroad tracks.

Bill was well loved by his family and many friends and in maturity, as his sister Mary Lou attests, he reciprocated that love. Mary Lou was shown his love in his caring visits to her in the nursing home and helping her in numerous tasks. Lois remembers having cut his hair once, so short, it left bare spots - the last time he let her cut his hair. Elizabeth's recounts the joy of having Bill visit her in Albuquerque and how he loved visiting with her Indian friends. Sister Bonnie recalls shared memories of the spiritual, listening to televangelist Joel and religious discussions she had with Bill. His cousin Debbie helped to bring faith to Bill as his educational limitations, due to his mytonic dystrophy, had kept him from participating in traditional religious services. His medical condition later kept him from continuing as a house painter. It may have kept him from some of his passions but he had other such wonderful gifts to share. Laughter . . . he and his sister Norma share that trait, to bring and share laughter with those around them. Brother Lew's remembrance was too humorous to quote but Louise loved his wonderful deep rich voice he inherited from their father. So now, as his father holds him in his arms or he plays with Dusty Dog, to you Bill, we say farewell, until we meet again.

Funeral Services will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, May 12, 2008 at the Radzieta Funeral Home, 9 Hand Av., Cape May Court House, NJ, where relatives and friends may call at 6:00 p.m. Interment will be private.
