Haskin, Harold Haley

Harold H. Haskin, scientist and teacher, died on June 23 at his home on Delaware Bay near Cape May Court House. He was 87. Dr. Haskin was the Julius Nelson Professor of Zoology at Rutgers University and an internationally known expert on the biology and ecology of marine molluscs. He was best known for his research on oyster biology, including establishment of the first successful selective breeding program to produce disease-resistant broodstock for molluscan aquaculture. His long-term studies on oyster and sea clam populations provided data for fisheries management to both state and federal governments. His contributions also include research on hard clam depuration, oil and sewage pollution, oyster predator biology, and the effects of dredging, damming, and development on the estuarine environment. He taught numerous marine-oriented courses at Rutgers and served as a scientific advisor to several New Jersey administrations.

He was born Harold Haley in Niagara Falls, NY on January 3, 1915, and was orphaned 3 years later when his parents, George and Laura Mosher Haley, died during the influenza pandemic of 1918. He was adopted by Frederick J. Haskin, a family acquaintance who moved to Salem, New Jersey, where the boy was raised. He graduated from Rutgers College in 1936, the first student to attain a straight A average. He was also a champion boxer and cadet colonel of the ROTC. As an undergraduate, he began working for Zoology Department Chairman and well-known oyster biologist Thurlow (T.C.) Nelson. Haskin's interest in New Jersey's shellfisheries led him to return to Rutgers as a faculty member in 1946, after obtaining a Ph.D. from Harvard and serving in the Army during World War II. He succeeded Nelson as Chairman of the Department of Oyster Culture and Director of the Oyster Research Laboratory until his retirement in 1984.

Haskin was at his best when he combined his research interest with education, both formal and informal. His graduate courses involved frequent field trips that took place regardless of weather and prompted the affectionate name "Hurricane Hal". Students who took his courses in estuarine ecology and coastal oceanography can attest to being in the field on blustery days with Haskin standing in icy water, seemingly oblivious of the cold, lecturing on one of his favorite subjects - oyster biology. Years later, former students would approach him at meetings or other functions and say that these classes were the most valuable they had taken in their graduate career. Four generations of students, now teaching or doing research around the country, can trace their academic lineage to him.

Haskin's numerous awards include Rutgers' Lindback Award for Distinguished Faculty research in 1980 and the University Medal for Distinguished Service in 1986. In 1980, he was the recipient of the Governor's Earth Day Anniversary Award for outstanding contributions to the protection of New Jersey's environment and in 1988, he was given an EPA Environmental Quality Award in recognition of commitment to environmental protection. In 1990, the Haskin Shellfish Research Laboratory, a new shellfish laboratory on Delaware Bay at Bivalve, was named after him by Rutgers. His Rutgers classmates added to the honor in 1996 by endowing the Harold Haskin Fisherman's Forum, which supports speakers with expertise in topics of interest to the Southern New Jersey fishing, aquaculture, and environmental communities. In 1994, Haskin and his wife Peg were honored by the Water Resources Association of the Delaware River Basin with the Dr. Ruth Patrick Excellence in Education Award for their "long-standing efforts to inform and create an awareness of the water resources of the Delaware River Basin". The pair's most recent award, given in 1999 on behalf of the people of New Jersey by the Governor, was in gratitude for their many efforts to "benefit the natural resources of the Delaware River Basin."

Haskin, a long-time resident of Piscataway, N.J., was an avid collector of lilacs, who tended his "Adelaide Dunbar" and "President Lincoln," along with ultimately over 70 varieties, which surrounded his home and perfumed the air for miles around each May. When he was not tending his lilacs or the oysters, he could be found sailing in his Thistle with family and grad students on his beloved Delaware Bay.

Haskin is survived by his wife, Peggy Haskin; five children, Kathleen Haskin of New York City, Jean Haley of North Kingstown, RI, Elizabeth Haskin of Cape May Court House, NJ, Frederick James Haskin of Piscataway, NJ, and Mary D. Haskin of Washington, DC; and four grandchildren, Harold Haskin II, a student at Rowan University, Allegra and Elijah Penny, of Washington, DC, and William Schroer of Cape May Court House, NJ.

A memorial service will be held in the fall. Contributions may be made to the Harold Haskin Fisherman's Forum or to the Harold H. Haskin Memorial Scholarship Fund, Rutgers University Foundation, 7 College Avenue, New Brunswick, N.J. 08091.
