Kienz, Robert George

Robert George Kienz passed peacefully into heaven on October 9, 2006, age 76 after a lengthy illness.

Born March 6, 1930 to George and Emma Kienz of North Bergen, NJ.

Bob lived the bulk of his first 56 years in the house where he was born, in North Bergen After 2 years service in the U.S. Army, Robert (Bob) graduated from Rutgers University. He was employed by Hudson City Savings Bank, Bell Telephone, and Prentice-Hall Book Publishing, Inc.

Bob and Phyllis, married 55 years, raised three children: Glenn (grandson Matthew); Donald (Pamela Cole; grandchildren Eric, Steven, and Ryan), and Linda Emr (Bruce; grandchildren Stephanie and Todd). Along with other cousins, Bob and three of his only-child cousins Ralph Kienz, and Jane and Phil Ochs, served and loved one another as siblings.

He met Phyllis in a church youth organization. He worked two jobs most of his working life, adapting without complaint to a disciplined, quiet life, treating all with generosity and selflessness. He served churches as deacon, Sunday School teacher and Superintendent, usher, and perhaps most famously as the tall-blond smiling Greeter.

Upon retirement from Prentice-Hall, Inc., where the job that delighted him most was Personnel Director, the Kienz's were blessed to live their dream of having a home at the shore, in Stone Harbor, NJ. Their circle of friends grew through loving relationships and active participation in clubs, community organizations, and sports activities. Bob was delighted in retirement to find himself with more coveted friends than at any other time of his life.

And so he continued to give back, exercising his faith in Jesus Christ in ways for which he sought no credit. "Mr. Bob" volunteered at the Glenwood Elementary School in Wildwood, the Wetlands Institute, Burdette-Tomlinson Hospital, the Red Cross, and as a Big Brother.

Bob left behind a wealth of people who were touched by his gracious, positive-thinking manner, his encouragement, his acceptance of all, and his love for the simple and most important things in life. What gave him the most happiness was seeing happiness in others. He died peacefully, hoping only that everything he did would, in his words, "help people realize that God is real and alive."
