Millar, John P.

JOHN P. MILLAR, age 70, of Avalon, NJ, died on Sunday, March 16, 2008, at the Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, Philadelphia. John was born in Philadelphia, Pa. the son of the late William, Sr. and Beatrice McMahon Millar.

John Millar founded Avalon Carpet Tile and Flooring in 1958 with one store in Avalon. The company has since grown to the nation's 6th largest floor covering retailer with 14 locations in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware and has over 350 employees. He was a visionary in the industry, always striving for a higher standard of excellence. Among the many national awards he received, the "Karastan Dealer of the Year" and "Mohawk Dealer of the Year" were his most recent accolades. The awards singled out the company for its extraordinary customer service, employee training and leadership within the industry and community.

During the 1970s & 1980s he developed another branch of the company (Avalon Commercial Corporation) to focus on the more commercial side of the flooring business as well as started a marble and granite fabricating company (Avalon Marble). These companies performed work in nearly all of the Atlantic City Casinos, as well the Bellevue Hotel in Philadelphia and the official residence of the New Jersey Governor (Drumthwacket).

While floor covering was always at the core, John also created a vibrant real estate development business in Cape May and Atlantic County. He was responsible for several admired developments such as Fisher Woods and Fisher Greens as well as single-family homes in Avalon.

Always ambitious and a lover of new challenges, John, along with his wife Mary, became first time restaurateurs when they opened the Whitebrier Inn on 21st Street in Avalon after converting the original Whitebrier Hotel into condominiums.

Giving back to the community was equally important to him. He was a trustee of the Stockton College Foundation and was instrumental in developing the "Workplace Giving Program" at Avalon Carpet Tile & Flooring, where he would match employee contributions to organizations such as the Make A Wish Foundation; the American Cancer Society; the American Heart Association and the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation.

John had a wonderful sense of humor and was known to pull off some world-class practical jokes on friends as well as business associates. Among his many hobbies were golfing, tennis (founder and partner of Jersey Cape Racquet Club) and skiing (with his family in the Poconos as well as out West). He was also an avid boater for many years. John will always be remembered for first-class taste in cars, homes, restaurants and travel - all of which he shared with family, friends and colleagues.

In addition to his wife, Mary M., he is survived by his son, John P., Jr. of New York and two sisters: Mary Rieser of Avalon and Margaret Zeiss of Cape May Court House. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers: William, Robert and Thomas Millar.
