William A. Kleiner Sr.

WANTAGE — William A. Kleiner Sr., 70, died Monday at Newton Memorial Hospital.

Born in Trenton, Mr. Kleiner had lived in Denville before moving to Sussex County in 1991.

Mr. Kleiner was employed as a teacher at the Roseland Grammar School, teaching art and English for 35 years before retiring 20 years ago.

He was a member of the Sussex Over 50 Club and was an avid artist, having exhibited his works in the New Jersey State Fair/Sussex County Farm and Horse Show.

Mr. Kleiner was predeceased by a brother, Joseph.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; two sons, William A. Jr., of Wantage and David, of Jersey City; two daughters, Kathleen Gathercoal, of Oregon and Elizabeth Sherpa, of Denville; one brother, Dr. Anton, of Reading, Pa. and five grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Pinkel Funeral Home, 31 Bank St. (Route 23), Sussex.

Ralph B. Ball Jr.

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Ralph B. Ball Jr., 73, died Aug. 2.

He lived in Franklin, N.J, before moving to Las Vegas.

Mr. Ball was a captain with the Picatinny Arsenal Fire Department, Local F169, before his retirement and was a former chief of the Franklin Fire Department.

He was also a member of the Sussex County Firemans Assocation, Franklin Exempt Firemans Association, New Jersey State Firemans Association and the New Jersey State Firemans Relief Association, and was a past president of Fire Prevention Association and secretary of the Exempt Firemans Association.

Mr. Ball also was a member of Kuntry Kuzins Square Dance Club. He served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army National Guard and was a member of Samaritan Lodge No. 98, F.&A.M.; of Hardyston, N.J.

Mr. Ball is survived by his wife, Peggy Sisco Ball; one son, Alan; one daughter, Patti Stipanov and her husband, Chris, all of Las Vegas, Nev.; one granddaughter and several nieces and nephews.

Arrangements are being handled by the First Presbyterian Church, Main Street, Franklin.

Alda Avondoglio

ANDOVER — Alda Polarolo Avondoglio "Grandma, " 95, died at her son's home in Andover on Thursday.

Born in 1910 in New York City to Quinto and Carolina Polarolo, Mrs. Avondoglio was a former resident of Corona, Queens, N.Y. for 39 years before moving to Andover in 1972.

She was a member of the Sparta Senior Citizens and a long time member of Our Lady of the Lake Church, Sparta.

She was predeceased by her husband, Victor Avondoglio Sr.

She is survived by one son, Victor Avondoglio Jr. and his wife Maureen; four grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Goble Funeral Home, 22 Main St., Sparta.

Josephine Bierstine

WANTAGE — Josephine "Jutzi" Bierstine, 71, died Thursday at Compassionate Care Hospice, Dover.

The daughter of the late Louis and Anna Bozek Osczepinski, she was born on March 19, 1934, in Florida, N.Y.

Mrs. Bierstine was a retired switchboard operator with Selective Insurance in Branchville.

She was an avid bowler with the Tri-Town Ladies Bowling League of Warwick, N.Y., 4 O's Card Club of Goshen, N.Y., a member of the Living Rosary Society of St. Stanislaus Church, Pine Island, N.Y., and a member of St. Monica's Church, Sussex.

Mrs. Bierstine is predeceased by four brothers, Joseph, Frank, Louis and Albert Osczepinski, formerly of Goshen and three sisters, Loretta Sadowski, formerly of Newark; Alexandra Labanowski and Theresa Sobiech, formerly of Goshen, N.Y.

She is survivored two sons, Edward "Skip Jr." Bierstine Jr., of Greenville, N.Y. and Anthony "Tony" Bierstine, of Wantage; one brother Stanley Osczepinski Sr. and his wife Florence, of Goshen, N.Y.; two sisters, Irene Rogowski and Caroline Madura, both of Goshen, N.Y.; one Sister - in-law, Agnes Osczepinski of Pine Island, N.Y.; four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the T.S. Purta Funeral Home, 22 Glenmere Avenue, Florida, N.Y.

Alexandra Labanowski

GOSHEN, N.Y. — Alexandra Labanowski, 83, died Wednesday, at Saint Claire's Hospital in Sussex.

The daughter of the late Louis and Anna Bozek Osczepinski, she was born on Feb. 14, 1922 in Florida, N.Y. She was a lifelong resident of the Goshen area.

Mrs. Labanowski was a homemaker.

She was a member of St. Joseph's Church, Florida, N.Y., St. Joseph's Church Rosary Society, Florida, N.Y., and the 4 O's Card Club of Goshen, N.Y.

Mrs. Labanowski was predeceased by her husband, John S. Labanowski Sr.; four brothers, Joseph, Frank, Louis and Albert Osczepinski, formerly of Goshen and one sister, Loretta Sadowski, formerly of Newark. Sisters Josephine "Jutzi" Bierstine, formerly of Wantage, and Theresa Sobiech, formerly of Goshen, N.Y., also died this week.

She is survived by one son, John S. Labanowski Jr. and his wife Jean, of Goshen, N.Y.; one daughter, Patricia Nemetz and her husband, John, of Milford, Pa.; one brother, Stanley Osczepinski Sr. and his wife, Florence, of Goshen, N.Y.; two sisters, Irene Rogowski and Caroline Madura, both of Goshen, N.Y.; one Sister - in-law, Agnes Osczepinski of Pine Island, N.Y. and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the T.S. Purta Funeral Home, 22 Glenmere Avenue, Florida, N.Y.

Ida Shauger

SPARROWBUSH, N.Y. — Ida "Mary" Shauger, 77, died Wednesday at the Middletown Park Manor in Middletown, N.Y.

The daughter of the late Daniel Shauger and Mary Lozier Shauger, she was born on June 17, 1928, in Ogdensburg, N.J.

She was a lifelong resident of Sparrowbush, N.Y.

Funeral services are under the direction of the Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home, 154 E. Main St., Port Jervis, N.Y.

Theresa Sobiech

GOSHEN, N.Y. — Theresa Sobiech, 72, died Wednesday, at Saint Claire's Hospital, Sussex.

The daughter of the late Louis and Anna Bozek Osczepinski she was born on September 2, 1932, in Florida, N.Y.

Mrs. Sobiech was former clerical worker for the Orange County Department of Social Services in Goshen, N.Y.

She was a member of the Living Rosary Society of St. Stanislaus Church, Pine Island, N.Y. A Member of the 4 O's Card Club of Goshen, N.Y. She was also a volunteer at St. Anthony's Hospital, Warwick, N.Y.

Mrs. Sobiech was predeceased by four brothers, Joseph, Frank, Louis and Albert Osczepinski, formerly of Goshen and one sister, Loretta Sadowski, formerly of Newark, N.J. Sisters Alexandra Labanowski, formerly of Goshen, N.Y., and Josephine "Jutzi" Bierstine, formerly of Wantage, N.J., also died this week.

She is survived by her husband, Ted Sobiech Sr.; three sons, Ted Sobiech Jr. of Pine Island, N.Y., Thomas Sobiech and his wife, Robin, of Pine Island, N.Y., Leon Sobiech and his wife, Alice, of Texas; one brother, Stanley Osczepinski Sr. and his wife, Florence, of Goshen, N.Y.; two sisters, Irene Rogowski and Caroline Madura, both of Goshen, N.Y.; one Sister - in-law, Agnes Osczepinski of Pine Island, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the T.S. Purta Funeral Home, 22 Glenmere Avenue, Florida, N.Y.

Mary P. Sturdy

NEWTON — Mary Pat Brew Sturdy, 46, died Wednesday at Newton Memorial Hospital.

Born in Brooklyn to the late John G. and Mary A. Cassidy Brew, she grew up in Fords and lived in Montville, moving to Newton one year ago.

She was a senior executive and corporate secretary with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey for 21 years before retiring in 2000.

A graduate of Adelphi University in New York, she was a communicant of St. Joseph's R.C. Church in Newton and an officer in the Karen Ann Quinlan Foundation.

She was predeceased by her fiancι, James A. Romito, chief of the Port Authority Police Department, on Sept. 11, 2001 and a sister, Wendy A. Brew, in 2004.

Ms. Sturdy is survived by her son, Robert E. of Newton; four brothers, John Brew and his wife, Mary Ellen, of Seattle, Wash., Paul T. Brew of Mt. Bethel, Pa., Gerard G. Brew and his wife, Phyllis, of Allendale and George T. Brew and his wife, Tricia, of Fords and four nephews.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Flynn and Son Funeral Home, 23 Ford Avenue, Fords.

Mary Countryman

CAMDEN, S.C. — Mary Linden Countryman, 75, died Tuesday, July 26.

Born in Sparta, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Harry and Jessie Miller Halsey Linden.

Mrs. Countryman was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church.

She was predeceased by her husband, John H.

Mrs. Countryman is survived by two daughters, Amy Elizabeth Christison, of Camden, S.C. and Sarah Kathryn Baumgaertner, of Freehold, N.J.; one son, Thomas Halsey, of Mesa, Ariz. and three grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Kornegay Funeral Home Camden Chapel, Camden, S.C.

Eleanor M. Pearce

LAFAYETTE — Eleanor Marie (Goddard-Star) Pearce, 78, died Tuesday at Morristown Memorial Hospital.

Born in Palmerton, Pa., she was a graduate of Roxbury High School. Following her marriage to her husband, Henry, she traveled with him during their 20 years of Navy life before settling back in New Jersey. She had lived in California, Hawaii, Washington, D.C., Brazil, Massachusetts and New Jersey. In New Jersey, she lived in Succasunna, nine years in Stanhope and 35 years in Lafayette.

During the 1960s, she worked as a secretary in the cafeteria at Roxbury High School and then for the Bank of New York as a teller.

Mrs. Pearce was a past matron of Pearl Chapter No. 79 Order of the Eastern Star of New Jersey in Dover, served on the advisory boards for DeMolay and Rainbow and is a Grand Cross of Color holder (Rainbow's highest honor).

She was active in the Boy and Girl Scouts while her children were growing up and was involved in the Shrine, working on the Salaam Temple Shrine Circus in Mennen and Sussex for more than 30 years.

Mrs. Pearce was a Gold Star Mother, following the death of her son, Henry "Hal" E., who died during Vietnam, on Jan. 23, 1969.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Henry; one son, Richard D., of Lafayette; one daughter, Elaine M. Dukin and her husband, Larry, of Flanders and formerly of Dover; a half-brother, Daniel Starr; three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Tuttle Funeral Home, 272 Route 10, Randolph.
