Arthur L. James
STILLWATER — Arthur L. James, 87, of Paulinskill Lake, died Friday, Nov. 3, 2006, at home.
Born in Baltimore, Md., he was a graduate of Loyola College. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II and was also in the Reserves, retiring from the military as a lieutenant colonel in May 1979. He also worked for General Motors until his retirement in 1981.
Mr. James had been a resident of Paulinskill Lake for more than 30 years. He was a member of the Stillwater Senior Citizens Association and the Stillwater Water District Board of Directors.
His wife, Adeline M. James, died in 1991.
Mr. James is survived by two sons, Arthur L. James Jr. of Berwyn Heights, Md., and William L. James and his wife, Mary Anne, of Montague; two daughters, Mary Lou James and her husband, Bruce Cohen, of Fresh Meadows, N.Y., and Kathleen James-Teelucksingh and her husband, Ivan Teelucksingh, of Bethesda, Md.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services were private and under the direction of the Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, 63 High St., Newton.
James Jacobson
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — James "Jake" Jacobson, 85, died Friday, Nov. 10, 2006, after a short illness.
Mr. Jacobson was born in Passaic and had lived in Franklin for most of his life. He and his wife, Ruth, retired to Hobe Sound, Fla., where they lived for 17 years before they moved to California in 1999.
Mr. and Mrs. Jacobson owned and operated Jacobson's Liquor Store in Franklin until its sale in 1971. Prior to that, the family business was known as Jacobson's General Store and later, Jacobson's Food and Liquor Store.
After selling their business, Mrs. Jacobson worked at Hardyston National Bank and Mr. Jacobson was a police dispatcher and law enforcement officer. Known as "K2CBK, " he was an amateur radio operator, and was a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Franklin Board of Health and the Board of Education, and was secretary of the Franklin Fire Department, a member of the Sussex County Board of Public Safety, and an aide to Sen. Robert Littell.
Mr. Jacobson graduated from Franklin High School, attended two years at Mississippi State College, then left college to join the Marine Corps. He was a member of the U.S. Marine Squadron, VMD 354, which covered Guam, Okinawa, Peleliu, Iwo Jima, Ulithi, and Japan.
Mrs. Jacobson died in 2004.
Mr. Jacobson leaves his daughter, Sharon Jacobson Sherman Brody and her husband, Howard; two grandchildren, Jason Sherman and his wife, Christy, and Leah Sherman Meza and her husband, Antonio, who is serving with the U.S. Army in Iraq; and two great-grandchildren, Jacob and Alexandra Sherman.
Visitation, Masonic and Firemen's services will be held at F. John Ramsey Funeral Home, 1 Main St., Franklin, on Wednesday, between 7 and 9 p.m. A graveside funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m., at Sons of Israel cemetery, Hardyston.
James Underwood
SPARTA — James Underwood, 48, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 12, 2006, at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. His loving family was by his side.
Mr. Underwood was born in Pompton Plains, and spent part of his childhood in Sparta. He had since returned to Sparta and had resided there for 12 years.
Mr. Underwood was employed at Verizon for 24 years. He coached the Sparta Youth Lacrosse and the Little League Football for many years, and also served as president of the league for five years. He successfully reinstated the Milk Bowl in Sparta. Mr. Underwood was an avid scuba diver and skier. He enjoyed off-road ATV. He lived life to the fullest and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was a devoted parishioner of Blessed Kateri Church in Sparta.
Mr. Underwood was predeceased by his parents, Helen and Robert Underwood.
He leaves behind his wife, Melinda; his son, Andrew; and daughter, Kelley. He was the loving brother of Karen Whitmore of Cicero, N.Y., Robert Underwood of Newton, Mary Ellen Wells of Syracuse, N.Y., Thomas Underwood of Holiday, Fla., Michael Underwood of Randolph, Joseph Underwood of Branchville, John Underwood of Stroudsburg, Pa., and Christopher Underwood of Brunswick, Ga.; the beloved son-in-law of Doris and Frank Vrabel of Denville; dear brother-in-law of Michael Vrabel of Sparta, Glenn Vrabel of Denville, and Kevin Vrabel of Wilkes-Barre, Pa; and adored by many loving nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Blessed Kateri Church in Sparta on Thursday, at 10 a.m. Friends may call on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Goble Funeral Home, 22 Main St., Sparta.

Beverly Judith Rosado
BARNEGAT — Beverly Judith Hanson Rosado, 66, formerly of Byram and New Providence, died Sunday, Nov. 12, 2006, at South Ocean County Hospital, Manahawkin. Born and raised in Staten Island, N.Y., she lived in Byram for 21 years, and New Providence for 25 years, before moving to Barnegat nine months ago.
Mrs. Rosado was a graduate of the County College of Morris in Randolph with a degree in nursing. She was a psychiatric nurse for 15 years, working at St. Barnabas Hospital in Livingston, and various nursing homes in the area. For the past three years, she was an administrative manager for American Court Reporters Inc., in Berkeley Heights, before retiring earlier this year.
She was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church of New Providence, as well as financial secretary and member of the Stewardship Committee. She volunteered for many functions, including the rummage sale. She was also a member of VASA Lodge Linne No. 429 of Summit and loved to cook.
Mrs. Rosado is survived by her husband of 10 years, Robert of Barnegat; her son, Scott Bunting of Hackettstown; her daughter, Christine Swistack of Byram; her brother, Lee Hanson of Florida; and seven grandchildren, Candyce, Alex, Elliot and Owen Bunting and Jessica, Nicole and Jacob Swistack.
A funeral will be held on Thursday at 10 a.m., at the United Methodist Church of New Providence. Interment will be in United Methodist cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m., at the Bradley-Brough Funeral Home, 535 Springfield Ave., Summit.

John Joseph Johnson Jr.
GREEN — John Joseph Johnson Jr., also known as "Mud Katt" and "Krazzy Kool, " 34, of Green, died Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2006, at his home.
Born in Hackensack, Mr. Johnson lived in Hope before moving to Green 19 years ago. He was a graduate of Newton High School.
Mr. Johnson was a landscaper and the owner/operator of Johnson Lawn in Green. He was a passionate golfer, an avid New York Giants fan and an avid hunter and outdoorsman.
Mr. Johnson is survived by his son, Shane Johnson; his mother, Judy Smith Comment; a brother, Ryan "Bobo" Johnson; two sisters, Katie Comment and Carrie Comment; his girlfriend, Brender Smith, all of Green; and his stepfather, Ray Comment of Hopatcong.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Western Hills Christian Church, 40 Kennedy Road, Green. Visitation will be Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, 63 High St., Newton.

Joseph P> Spano
NEWTON — Joseph P. Spano, 71, of Newton, formerly of Northvale, died on Saturday, Nov. 11, 2006.
He was a printer for the Daily News. He was a Korean War Marine Corps veteran and a member of the Northvale Exempt Fireman's Association.
Mr. Spano was the beloved husband of the late Claire. He was the devoted father of Paul of Newton and Brenda Yarton and her husband, Mark, of Franklin, and the dear brother of Marie Gilbert of Ohio. He was the cherished grandfather of Ashley.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony's R.C. Church, Northvale, with interment to follow at Rockland cemetery, Sparkill, N.Y. Visiting hours are Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Anthony R. Pizzi Funeral Home, 120 Paris Ave., Northvale (201-767-3050).
Helene M. Nielson
NEWTON — Helene M. Wardle Nielson, 80, died Friday, Nov. 10, 2006, at home.
Born in Ogdensburg, Mrs. Nielson was a lifetime resident of Sussex County. She was a medical secretary for Dr. Jerome Kesselman for 20 years before her retirement in 1991. Mrs. Nielson enjoyed watching sports and was a great fan of the Yankees, the New York Giants and the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.
Her husband, Robert G. Nielson, died in 1994 and her son, Robert L. Nielson, in 2005. She was also predeceased by her parents, Melvin and Bessie Flanagan Wardle.
She is survived by two sons, Dirk G. Nielson of Whitefish, Mont., and Rick Nielson of Newton; one sister, Betty Wardle of Andover; two brothers, Oakley Wardle of Annapolis, Md., and George Wardle of Augusta; three granddaughters; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church in Franklin.

William D. Livingston
BLOOMINGDALE — William D. Livingston, 80, of Bloomingdale, formerly of Newfoundland, died on Saturday, Nov. 11, 2006, at Lakeland Health Care.
Born in Paterson, Mr. Livingston had been a resident of Bloomingdale since 2003. He was a self-employed heating technician and a member of the Milton American Legion Post. He is survived by two sons, William of Newton and Kenneth of Bloomingdale; four daughters, Betty Connelly, Linda Daly and Sharon Heller, all of Bloomingdale, and Susan Shillaber of East Windsor; and 11 grandchildren.
A funeral will be held on Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. at the Richards Funeral Home, 4 Newark Pompton Turnpike, Riverdale. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 5 to 9 p.m. Final disposition will be private.
Vincent C. Kehoe
VERNON — Vincent C. Kehoe of Highland Lakes, formerly of Bergenfield, died on Sunday, Nov. 12, 2006.
He was the beloved husband of Susan C. (Hatkins) Kehoe. He was the loving son of Priscilla and Vincent Kehoe and the dear brother of Patricia Zimmer. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
The funeral will leave Riewerts Memorial Home Inc., 187 So. Washington Ave., Bergenfield, on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. for the funeral at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Bergenfield, at 10 a.m. Interment will be in Glenwood cemetery, Vernon. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Mildred A. Williams
Milford, Pa. — Mildred A. Williams, 87, died peacefully at the Sussex County Homestead on Friday, Nov. 10, 2006.
The daughter of the late William and Alice Fernley of Paterson, Mrs. Williams lived most of her life in Paterson before moving to Sussex County in 1977.
She worked for Transistor Devices in Randolph for more than 10 years before retiring in 1990. She was also an avid volunteer at the Sussex Senior Center in Sussex.
Mrs. Williams was predeceased by her husband, Harold Jacob Williams, in 1977; a son, Donald Williams, in 1989; and a daughter, Donna Smith, in 2000.
Survivors include two sons, Harold Richard Williams and Ronald Williams, both of Paterson; a daughter, JoAnn Davenport of Milford, with whom she lived; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 5 p.m. from the Ferguson Funeral Home, 27 Third St., Sussex Borough. Private cremation will be held at the convenience of the family.

Steve L. Kelly Sr.
WANTAGE — Steve L. Kelly Sr., 71, of Wantage, died Tuesday at home.
Born in Philadelphia, Pa., Mr. Kelly lived in Pompton Lakes before moving to Sussex County in October 1967. He had served in the Air Force during the Korean War and he had been employed by Equifax Insurance Company as an insurance investigator in Atlanta, Ga., before retiring 16 years ago.
Mr. Kelly is survived by his wife of 50 years, Elaine (Brown); two sons, Steve Jr. and Glenn Erik, of Wantage; one daughter, Kimberly Lime, of Clinton; two brothers, David and Walter Kelly, both of Chicago; one sister, Sharon Anderson, of Chicago, and three grandchildren.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Pinkel Funeral Home, 31 Bank St. (Route 23), Sussex.
