ALICE A. GARDUNO, 81, of Las Vegas, N.M., died Saturday after a sudden illness. She was born in Maes in 1923 and married in Las Vegas, N.M., in 1942. She worked as a nurse's aide at Northeastern Regional Hospital for 28 years and as a foster grandparent for the West Las Vegas Schools. She loved working with the children and teachers at the Armijo Elementary School. She enjoyed crocheting, embroidering, sewing, gardening and traveling, and did a lot of community work. She was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Church and a member of the Legend of Mary, Catholic Daughters, the Sacred Heart Society, a Eucharistic Minister at Our Lady of Sorrows Church and a member of AARP. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hilario A. Garduno; parents, George Alcon and Mary Morin Alcon; brothers, Eliseo Morin and David Alcon; sister, Angelina Alcon; and daughter, Elaine Garduno. She is survived by her children, Joann Garduno, Rick Garduno and wife Carla and Lawrence "BoBo" Garduno, all of Las Vegas, N.M., Rita Martinez and husband John, Leonard Garduno and wife Eloise and Geraldine Garduno, all of Santa Fe, Pita Garcia and husband Jesus and Ron Garduno and wife Bonnie, all of Rio Rancho; Caroline Roane and husband Tom of Hobbs, Larry Garduno and wife Lorraine of Widefield, Colo., Alfonso Garduno of Denver, Jose Garduno and wife Judy of Lakewood, Colo., Lorraine Leger of Las Vegas, Nev., Lita Saunders and husband Jim of Tucson, Ariz., and Elaine Wilber and husband Scott of Springfield, Va.; 35 grandchildren; brothers and sisters, George Alcon of Arkansas, Emma Ulibarri of Albuquerque, Laura Aragon, Fernando Alcon, Marcello Alcon and wife Jenny, all of Pueblo, Colo., Ernesto Alcon and wife Jennie of Ontario, Canada, Richard Alcon and wife Flora of Rockford, Colo., Pita Carrillo and husband Gilbert of La Junta, Colo., and Mary Young of Pine Top, Ariz.; special friends, Flora Romero, Mela Garduno, Theresa Benavidez and Adelina Chavez, all of Las Vegas, N.M.; and many other relatives and friends. A visitation will be held 1-5 p.m. today at the Rogers Chapel. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at Our Lady of Sorrows Church. MANUEL A. GONZALES, 80, of Santa Fe died Saturday. He loved his family and country. He served in the armed forces during World War II and received the Purple Heart, the Good Conduct Medal and the European Theater of Operations Ribbons. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, 7th Armored Division, the Association of Federal Workers and volunteered for 19 years at the VA Medical Center in Albuquerque. He is survived by his wife, Eliodora Gonzales; daughters, Debbie Gonzales and husband Carlos, Lorraine Berry and husband Jim; son Manny Gonzales and wife Linda; sisters, Maida Ortiz, Esther Romero, Mary Todd and Henrietta Tixier and husband Mariano; brothers, Jimmy Gonzales and wife Florence; 12 grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. Private burial services will be held at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, his family has suggested love gifts be offered to his grandson, Jonathan Berry. WILLIAM F. GORSICH, 20, of Red River died April 27 in a car accident. He was a man of many trades. He loved to ski. He enjoyed hunting and had just received his big bear skin back from the taxidermist from a hunt in October 2002. He had just received his state guiding license. He is survived by his father, Steve Gorsich; mother, Janetta Gorsich and sister, Jamie Gorsich and many other relatives and friends. A memorial service was held on Saturday at the Red River Community House. In lieu of flowers the family requests monetary donations be made to the Faith Mountain Fellowship Church Phase II, P.O. DANNY MARTINEZ, 50, of the Mas O Menos subdivision north of Española died Sunday after a long battle with cancer. Cremation has taken place. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Española. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at the same church with burial to follow at Rosario Cemetery in Santa Fe. The family would like to invite everyone to share a meal with them at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish Hall in Santa Fe immediately following the burial. JULIO RODARTE SR., 88, of Rodarte died Monday. He and his wife owned Mary's Store in Rodarte. He was a school board member, a former Taos County Commissioner and foreman for the Highway Department. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Guadalupita Rodarte; and brothers, Henry, Eli and Frank Rodarte. He is survived by his wife, Mary Rodarte; children, Sophia Rodarte of Santa Fe, James Rodarte and wife Harry Lou and Nelson Rodarte, all of Rodarte, Rebecca Santillanes and husband Joe of Las Vegas, N.M., Ray Rodarte and wife Janis, Cynthia Martinez and husband Arsenio, Diana Romero and husband Bert, Julio Rodarte Jr., Pearl Goldstein and husband Kenny, all of Albuquerque, and Joseph Rodarte and wife Leticia of Santa Teresa; 22 grandchildren; and many other relatives. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Rodarte. BENIGNA ROMERO, 79, of Chamisal died Sunday. She was a foster grandmother for Head Start in Vadito for many years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Delfino and Felicita Lucero; and sisters, Manuelita Padilla and Feloniz Espinoza. She is survived by her husband, Rudolfo Romero; children, Angie Lucero, Clifford Martinez of Dixon, Debra Sena and husband Ralph, Rudy Lucero and wife Patricia, Elisa Diaz and husband Archie, Roland Romero and wife Beatrice, all of Ojito, Wilfred Lucero and wife Helen of Erda, Utah, and Juan Romero and wife Tanya of Ely, Nev.; sisters, Matilde Lovato and Rafelita Lovato and husband Jose; and many other relatives and friends. RICHARD BLAMIRES STREEPER, 84, of Taos died Monday after a long illness. He was born in Utah. He was a flight surgeon in Japan during World War II. After the war, he became a Harvard Fellow and studied cardiology under Paul Dudley White in Boston. While practicing medicine at Lovelace Clinic in Albuquerque during the 1950s, he performed the first heart catheterizations in the state. He was a co-founder, with Richard Angle and Bergere Kenny, of the first coronary care unit in New Mexico at St. Vincent Hospital. He was also in charge of heart testing for the first astronauts before the program was moved to NASA. From 1959 on, he practiced medicine in Santa Fe, retiring in 1998. He enjoyed hiking in Taos with longtime friend and colleague from the Lovelace Clinic days, Larry Amick. He is survived by his wife, Susan Streeper; children, Eliot, Kristen, Judith, John and Charles; and brother, Russell Streeper of Utah. Memorial service details will be announced at a later date. AMARANTE "MONTY" TRUJILLO, 20, of Española died unexpectedly Monday. He had a heart for music and had a lifelong dream of being a musician. He enjoyed fishing and loved to socialize. He is survived by his mother, Frances Trujillo and stepfather, Jimmy Ortiz; brother, Arthur Martinez; sister, Vickie Gonzales; uncle who helped raise him, Larry Joseph Martinez; close friend, Janet Ruiz and fiancé Steve Archuleta, all of Española; close cousin, Blanca Guerrero and fiancé Mario Vargas of Hollywood, Calif. and many other relatives and friends. A visitation will be held at 6:30 p.m. with a rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. today in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel at DeVargas Funeral Home in Española. MARY CATHERINE Jones CHURCH, 71, of Santa Fe died Wednesday.
She was the daughter of Santa Fe homesteaders William and Ruth Bush Jones. She attended Loretto Girls School, St. Mary's High School, the University of New Mexico and the Northwestern Medical School. She had a distinguished professional career as one of the first licensed physical therapists in New Mexico. A longtime resident of Roswell, she retired to her family home in Santa Fe in 1996. She is survived by her husband, Clifford Church; sons, William Church of Alamorgordo, Robert Church of Cedar Crest, Christopher Church of Seattle, Edward Church of Scottsdale and Thomas Church of Santa Fe; 10 grandchildren; and sister, Florence Ruth Brown-Folmar of Santa Fe. A visitation will be held 4-8 p.m. Saturday at Berardinelli Family Chapel. A memorial service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the same chapel with burial to follow at the Santa Fe National Cemetery followed by a reception at her home. ANTONIA "TONI" S. TAFOYA GALLEGOS, 83, formerly of Las Vegas, N.M., died Monday at the Summerlin Hospital in Las Vegas, Nev. She was a resident of of Las Vegas, Nev. She was born in San Antonio, N.M. She served the Immaculate Conception Church for 25 years as eucharistic minister and served two Masses daily. She taught catechism, helped train all the altar servers, created all the infant Jesus garments and provided many other services for the church. She was preceded in death by her father, Jesus Antonio Tafoya; mother, Maria Candelaria Baca-Tafoya; husband, Tony Gallegos; brother, Joe Tafoya; and sister, Katie Tafoya. She is survived by her daughters and son, Julie O'Neal and husband Charles, Bill Tafoya and wife Katrina and Josie Job and husband Gene, all of Las Vegas, Nev.; 10 grandchildren; sister, Lena Salazar of Las Vegas, N.M.; brother, Cordy Tafoya of Albuquerque; and many other relatives and friends. A funeral service will be held at 9 a.m. today at the Immaculate Conception Church with burial to follow at 1 p.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. LAWRENCE LUCERO, 71, of Dixon died Wednesday after a sudden illness. He was a farmer and a member of Post 62 of the American Legion in Dixon. He enjoyed spending his time camping, fishing and hunting. He married in 1958 and had two daughters. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents, Juan D. and Loyda S. Lucero; brother, Isaac Lucero; sister, Susanna Maes and father and mother-in law Abelino and Amalia Martinez. He is survived by his wife, Susie of Dixon; daughters, Rayette Lucero of Dixon and Patty Mondragon and husband Ricky of Peñasco; three grandchildren; sisters, Ruth Archuleta and Ruben Lucero and wife Corina, all of Dixon, Josie Galloway and husband Tony of Albuquerque; and many other relatives and friends. A visitation will be held at 6 p.m. with a devotional service to follow at 7 p.m. Sunday at Embudo Presbyterian Church in Dixon.
