RAY W. HUTCHINS, 80, of Santa Fe died Saturday.
He was born in Clifton, Kan., the only son of Mildred Florence and Loren Elmer Hutchins. He spent his childhood in Falls City, Neb., where his father owned L.E. Hutchins jewelry store. He attended Carnegie Technology University for one year, then transferred to the University of Nebraska. He served in the Marine Corps from 1942 to 1945. He received a bachelor's degree from Kansas State University in architecture/engineering. He practiced architecture in Manhattan, Kan., first as an associate with F.O. Wolfenbarger and Associates and later in partnership with Ray Lippenberger. After one year working for the state of Kansas, he joined Contract Surety Consultants in Wichita, Kan. In 1977 he and his wife moved to Wayne, Pa., to open an eastern branch of CSC. He and his wife retired to Santa Fe in 1988. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Sally Huffman and second wife, Margaret Anderson Phillips. He is survived by his children, Ann Mead of Indianapolis, Ellie Howard of Santa Fe, and Mark Hutchins of Overland Park, Kan.; stepchildren, Toby Anderson of Santa Fe and Eliott Anderson of Houston; five grandchildren and many other relatives. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Christ Lutheran Church. A reception at the church will follow. Burial will be at Santa Fe National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, friends are encouraged to make donations in his memory to Odyssey Health Care, El Rancho de Las Golondrinas or Christ Lutheran Church. VALENTINA BOWLES VIGIL, 91, of Pecos died Monday. She was born to Anselmo and Clarita Bowles at Los Ruerdos, the family ranch. She was a loving and gracious woman whose main concern was her family. As a stay-at-home mom, she created a safe and happy environment. When friends and visitors arrived, they were immediately served coffee and biscochitos or some other freshly baked goods. She was known for her culinary skills, especially her baked bread. She was an excellent seamstress who could create her own patterns for clothing by merely looking at a picture in a catalog. She shared her skills with relatives and friends. She was a member of the St. Anthony Parish, Our Lady of Fatima Altar Society, American Legion Post No. 31 Auxiliary, Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary and the Pecos Senior Citizens. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Tomas Vigil; second husband, Jose S. Vigil; son, Sixto Vigil; daughter, Olivia "Libby" Blevins; and infant son. She is survived by her daughters, Theresa Manno and husband Joseph, Dolores "Dolly" Vigil and husband Orlando, Josephine "Jo" Huntington, special grandson, Tomas Vigil and wife Beatriz, thirteen grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. A public visitation will be held at 3 p.m. today followed by a rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. at St. Anthony's Catholic Church. MANUEL A. ARMIJO, 92, of Santa Fe died Tuesday.
He was born in Armijo, the son of the late Lorenzo and Placida Armijo. He married Frances Apodaca in 1940 in Mora. He was a member of the 200th Coast Artillery serving in the Philippines, survived the Bataan Death March and was a POW in the Philippines for 31/2 years. Following his discharge he returned to Santa Fe where he was employed in the WPA Program. He later worked in the state government where he was appointed in 1957 as the director of the State Veterans Service Commission, until he retired in 1966. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. He was a member and past state commander and past national vice-commander of the VFW, member of the military Order of the Cooties, Order of the Purple Heart and the American POW Association. He was preceded in death by his parents; and daughters, Jenny and Patricia. He is survived by his wife, Frances A. Armijo; children, Fred Armijo, Peggy Ruiz, Loretta Lithgow and husband Clarence; nine grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. Memorial contributions may be donated to your favorite charity. A visitation will be held 3-5 p.m. today at Berardinelli Family Chapel. Another visitation will be held at 6:30 p.m. with a rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. today at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. LYDIA M. MONTOYA, 59, of Santa Fe died Tuesday at St. Vincent Hospital after a long illness. She was born in Blanchard to Federico and Marica Segura Ortiz. She was a member of the Church of Christ and best-known for her love and collection of dolls which will be donated to children's programs. She was influential in her nieces and nephews upbringing. She was preceded in death by her father; husband, Antonio Montoya; and brother, Henry Ortiz. She is survived by her mother, Marica C. Ortiz of Las Vegas, N.M.; Fred Ortiz Jr. of Santa Fe, Robert Ortiz and wife Mary Helen and Dennis Ortiz and wife Sharon, all of Las Vegas, N.M.; special friend and companion, Antonio Lujan of Cleveland, N.M.; and many other relatives. MARIE PITA MONTOYA, 73, of Arroyo Seco died Monday after a long battle with diabetes. She had amazing courage, endless strength and unyielding faith. She was preceded in death by her son, Leonard Lewis Montoya; father, Abedon Lopez Sr.; mother, Manuelita Quintana Lopez; and stepmother, Adelia Lopez. She is survived by her daughter, Lilliemae G. Ortiz and husband Ricardo "Tino" Ortiz of Pojoaque; four grandchildren; close friend, Eppie Valerio; brothers and sisters, Alice Maestas and husband Carasolio of La Puebla, Tony Lopez and wife Louise of Santa Fe, Abedon Lopez Jr. and wife Lorraine of Albuquerque, Jackie Varatto and husband Dave of Las Vegas, Nev., Connie Maestas of Santa Fe and Michael Lopez of Cuarteles; and many other relatives and friends. LYNDELL P. SELFRIDGE, 64, of Albuquerque died Tuesday. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Mabel Selfridge; brother, Bill Selfridge; and sisters, Lana Peterson, Eloise Ballew, Mabel Gordon and Sue Baker. He is survived by his wife, Esther Catron; sons, Robert Selfridge and wife Evelyn, Brian Selfridge and wife Susan, and Jonathan Selfridge and wife Kimberly; sister, Martha Dahlberg and husband Earl; brothers, Lonnie Selfridge and wife Pat, Paul Selfridge and wife Georgeann, Larry Selfridge and wife Tammy, Harry Selfridge, Ernie Selfridge and wife Suzie; 13 grandchildren; mothers of his children, Ruth Selfridge and Arleen Selfridge; and many other relatives and friends. CESARIO VIGIL, 92, of Talpa died Monday. He was a Hermano of the Talpa Morada. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ales Vigil. JOSEPH "CHIEFIE" GONZALES, 32, of Tecolote died Sunday.
He was born in Las Vegas, N.M., to Florian Gonzales and Floraida Martinez. He was currently doing landscaping work. He is survived by his daughters, Felicia, Melissa, Jovanne and Alyssa Gonzales; girlfriend, Beverly Medina; mother, Floraida Martinez and friend Ruben Valdez of Tecolote; father, Florian Gonzales of Tecolote; brother, Amador Gonzales of Colorado; sisters, Loretta Romero of Colorado and Ramona L. Trujillo of Tecolote; special great-niece, Christina Trujillo; close friend, Tina Sedillo of Las Vegas, N.M.; and many other relatives and friends. RALPH E. HALL JR., 73, of Santa Fe died Sunday. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, cousin and friend. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph E. Hall Sr. and Dorothy M. JESUS RAMON T. MARTINEZ of Santa Fe died suddenly Monday. He graduated from Capital High School in May of 2000. He was very active and loved all sports. He was named Offensive Lineman of the Year and was district champion in wrestling. He was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and riding his motorcycle. He is survived by his parents, Mark and Yvonne M. Denko; special dad, John Gonzales; sister, Sandra Gonzales; friends, Melanie Martinez, Cecilia Chavez, Jonathan Thomas, Judy Garcia, Tim Mora, Hans Eisenhart, Estevan Moya, Joe and Annette Mirabal and Mario Romero; and many other relatives and friends. A visitation will be held 1-3 p.m. today at Berardinelli Family Chapel. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. JOE TARAZON, 71, of Espaņola died Monday.
He was a retired captain.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy; daughters, Maria Antionette Tarazon and Milinda Consuelo Tarazon-Plummer; and two granddaughters. Cremation has taken place.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home.
