EILEEN ESQUIBEL, 38, of Peñasco died Sunday. She was preceded in death by her mother, Flora Roybal; and stepsister, Valerie A. Roybal. She is survived by her father, Andronico Roybal; brother, Ivan Roybal and wife Jane; half brothers and sisters, Joe R. Roybal and wife Lydia and Juanita Roybal and husband Carpio, all of Peñasco, Rosie Medina and husband Obed of Vadito, Virginia Lopez of Taos; and many other relatives and friends. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at San Antonio de Padua Catholic Church in Peñasco. Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at the same church with burial at the Andronico Roybal Family Cemetery in Peñasco. Rivera-Hanlon Funeral Home, (505) 758-3841.

SARAH B. GRACE, 93, of Truchas died Tuesday after a long illness. She was born in Truchas. "Aunt Sarah" wanted to be remembered for whom she was and not for what she did. She was a great mother, a good listener, a loyal friend, a tireless worker, a bright philosopher and a problem solver. She liked fixing electrical, plumbing and roofing around the house. She enjoyed gardening and house cleaning. She was a great cook and made superb chili. She was like a second parent to the Romero children. She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodoro Grace; and parents, Juanita Cordova and Bernardino Baca; and brothers, Damacio Romero and Simon Cordova and wife Shonita. She is survived by many relatives and friends. Per her wishes, friends and relatives are invited to gather with her for a rosary to be recited at noon with a Mass to be celebrated at 12:30 p.m. Friday at St. Francis Cathedral followed by burial at 2 p.m. at Santa Fe National Cemetery. Her favorite charities were St. Vincent de Paul Society, the Carmelite Sisters and the Shrine of St. Jude in Chicago. Berardinelli Family Funeral Service, 983-4331.

EUTILIA CORTEZ SANTISTEVAN, 90, of Ranchos de Taos died Tuesday. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rubel and Francisquita Cortez; an infant daughter; three sisters; and five brothers. She is survived by her husband, Guillermo Santistevan; sons, David Santistevan and wife Teddie of Ranchos de Taos; Carlos Santistevan and wife Mary Frances and Robert R. Santistevan and wife Christine Dee, all of Albuquerque; seven grandchildren; and many other relatives. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Friday at San Francisco de Asis Catholic Church. JIM CORNELIUS of Santa Fe died Saturday.
He operated Desert Data in Santa Fe for the past 14 years.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Cornelius; three children; and five grandchildren.

MAX EICHWALD, 91, of Peñasco and a lifelong resident of Cuba died Sunday after a short illness.
He was a member of the senior citizen group in Cuba and Chamisal. He was a champion pool player for the Senior Olympics, a deputy sheriff and a volunteer fireman in Cuba. He served as an elder in the Cuba Presbyterian Church. He loved fishing and hunting. He loved to travel and dance with his wife. He attended Menaul School in Albuquerque.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Aron (Augustine) and Isabel Eichwald; wife, Quirina Eichwald; daughters, Mariquita and Mary Louise Eichwald; sisters, Emma, Carmelita, Lucilla and Genoveva; and brothers, Augustine and Bart.
He is survived by his daughter Joanna Valerio and husband, Eloy, of Ranchos de Taos; Esther Martinez and husband, Roberto "Tony," of Cuba and Laura Eichwald of San Diego; sons, Aaron Eichwald and wife, Roselyn, of Peñasco and Eric Eichwald and wife, Sherri, of Los Lunas; sister, Ida Valdez of Cuba; brother, Alex Eichwald and wife Serafina of Corrales; 14 grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held at 6 p.m. with a devotional service at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Peñasco Presbyterian Church. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Cuba Presbyterian Church in Cuba with burial to follow at the Presbyterian Cemetery in Cuba.

KAREN FRIEDMANN, 97, of Santa Fe died Friday of a heart attack at St. Vincent Hospital.
She was a resident of El Castillo. She was born and raised in Denmark and educated at the University of Copenhagen. She came to the United States in 1936 on a postgraduate research fellowship in economics to study New Deal policies and was based at the Brookings Institute. During her time there she met her future husband, Herbert Friedmann, longtime Smithsonian Institution curator and later director of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. She pursued a career in economics in the Foreign Agricultural Service, Department of Agriculture, from the early 1940s until 1961. One of her research grants took her to Greenland where she became deeply interested in Eskimo culture. After moving to Los Angeles in 1961 she worked for the Food Research Institute, Stanford University, on a commuting basis. She continued to publish in economic journals and from 1987 until about a year before her death and did scientific translation for the Natural History Museum in Los Angeles from her home in Santa Fe where she moved in 1996. She loved traveling, music and entertaining her many friends and colleagues.
She is survived by her daughter, Karen Friedmann Beall and son-in-law Dale K. Haworth of Santa Fe; sister, Bitten Vejlo of Denmark; and many other relatives.
Her ashes will be placed with her husband's at Oak Hill Cemetery in Washington, D.C.

JOHNNY GARDUNO, 56, of El Llano died unexpectedly Sunday.
He was a member of the Laborers Union No. 16.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Luciano and Basilia Garduño; and brother, Pete Garduño.
He is survived by his wife, Josephine Garduño; son, Andrew Garduño and girlfriend Andrea Martinez; daughters, Desiray and Victoria Garduño; and one grandson, all of El Llano; brothers and sisters, Sylveria Garduño of Chimayó, Antonia Martinez and husband Manuel and Ramita Martinez and husband Harold, all of La Puebla, Consuelo Martinez and husband Aniseto of Chamita, Petrita Garduño and companion JR Sisneros of Medanales and Jody Garduño and wife Connie of Chimayó; mother and father-in-law, Ramon and Helen Garcia of Alcalde; brothers and sisters-in-law, Vera Bustos and husband Horacio of La Mesilla, Lisaida Archuleta and husband David of Alcalde, Raymond Lucero and wife Juanita of Santa Cruz and Renee Forbes and husband Rodney of Georgia; and many other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held at 5 p.m. with a rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. today in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home. Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Chimayó with burial to follow at the Nuestra Señora de Dolores Cemetery in Chimayó.

JANE BEDFORD HARDEY of Taos died Monday at her home. She was known for her hospitality and creativity. She hosted a weekly writers group in her home for over 15 years. She was an avid supporter of the Taos Jazz scene. Her passion for skiing drew her to Taos, where she opened an art gallery. Her later success as a realtor led her to own and operate Milagro Realty. Her love of dance led her to a master's degree in dance from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas. She used dance for spiritual and physical healing during her first encounter with cancer in 1984. As a lifelong student of Gurdjieff, her spiritual acumen sustained both herself and her friends. Her love for Jesus led her on many pilgrimages to Christ in the Desert Monastery near Abiquiu and to convert to Catholicism in the last year of her life.
She was preceded in death by her father, Barney Bedford; and sister, Linda Sullivan.
She is survived by her mother, Lillian Liles Bedford; and brother, Donald and wife Jo Ann Bedford, all of New Braunfels, Texas; and many other relatives.
Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at San Francisco de Asis Catholic Church with burial to follow at Las Cruces Cemetery. A reception will follow from 1:30 to 5 p.m. at the Old Blinking Light.
