JOSEFINA CARRANZA, 84, of Santa Fe, died Monday following a brief illness.
She was born in Mexico City on Dec. 24, 1919, to Tomas Carranza and Jesusita Aguilar. She was employed as a cook at St. Catherine's Indian School, 1973-1992. She was also a foster grandparent at Gonzales Elementary, 1998-2003. She was preceded in death by her parents; grandson, Sean Jimenez; and sisters, Adelita and Angelita. She is survived by her loving sons, Jorge Manuel Jimenez and wife Martha Elizabeth Lugo de Jimenez, Daniel Baldomero Jimenez and wife Heidi Teichmann, Alfredo Jimenez and wife Diana, and Angelo Jimenez and wife Dorothy; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and sisters, Maria Luisa Carranza de Navarro and Gloria Carranza de Davila. Memorial contributions may be donated to Alfredo Jimenez, 2743 Calle Cedro, Santa Fe, N.M. 87505. A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday at Berardinelli Family Chapel. JESSIE M. ZIEGLER, 90, of Chamita, died Monday. She was born in Copperhill, Tenn., on May 19, 1913, to Thomas Henry Arp and Etta Jane Stuart. She was preceded in death by her husband, William E. Ziegler in 1994; and daughter, Patricia Ann Meier in 1996. She is survived by daughter, Mary Helen Thronas and husband Fred of Chamita; grandsons, Christopher and wife Denise of San Juan Pueblo, Kevin and fiance Lisa of Pojoaque, Aaron of Kennewick, Wash., and Andrew and wife Shanna of Chamita; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services are at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Block-Salazar Mortuary. Burial will follow at 11:30 a.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. The Salazar Family of Block-Salazar Mortuary.

JOSEPH MICHAEL AGUILAR, 72, of Englewood, Calif., died Oct. 8.
He is survived by his wife, Elba Coca Romero Aguilar; children, Joseph Michael Aguilar Jr. (Lorraine), Viola Ruth Aguilar, Carl John Aguilar, Danny R. Aguilar and Lori D. Aguilar all of California; three grandchildren; brothers, Rudy, Charlie and Louie Aguilar; sisters, Juanita Aguilar and Trini Sherod. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. today at Rivera Chapel with burial to follow at Las Cruces Cemetery. Rivera-Hanlon Funeral Home.

JULIA H. DIENER died Wednesday. She came to St. Francis School in the fall of 1965 and taught there until her retirement in 1987. At retirement, St. Francis School presented her with the Dedicated Teacher Award. In addition to her 22 years of teaching at St. Francis, she had previously taught 14 years in public and parochial schools in Colorado and Ohio. She also served as a Red Cross social worker at Newton D. Baker Army Hospital, Martinsburg, W.Va., during World War II; as a family caseworker for Catholic Services in Cincinnati; as a social worker for St. Gerard Maternity Home in Memphis, Tenn.; and as an executive assistant for the American Red Cross in Fayetteville, Ark. She was an active member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and had served as a secretary of its Altar Society and as a teacher of children's religious education classes. She was also active in the Catholic Daughters of America, was a former vice president of the Sangre de Cristo field chapter of Phi Delta Kappa, and had served as a provincial secretary for the Secular Franciscan Order and as a novice instructor for the organization at St. Francis Cathedral. She was born in Vera Cruz, Ohio. After graduation from Fayetteville, Ohio, High School she earned a bachelor's degree at Athenaeum Teachers College in Cincinnati and a master's degree at Memphis State University. She also did graduate and undergraduate studies at the University of Cincinnati; Xavier University in Cincinnati; Carroll College in Helena, Mont.; the University of Oregon; the University of Arkansas; Adams State College in Alamosa, Colo.; and the College of Santa Fe. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Diener; daughter, Joan Marie; sisters, May and Lillian; and brothers, James and Charles. She is survived by her three sons, Mark Diener and special friend Joyce Dow, Paul Diener of Santa Fe, and Jude Diener of Willow Creek, Calif.; brother-in-law, Albert Townsley of Dallas; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. Sunday, and a rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Francis Cathedral. Burial will follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery. Memorials, in lieu of flowers, may be sent to Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary, Santa Fe.

NESTOR MAES, 80, of Mora County, died Monday. He was born Jan. 6, 1923, to Luz Rodriguez Martinez and Pedro Maes, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Maes. He retired as director of the Mora County Human Services Division. He is survived by his daughters, Sharon Hobson and husband Greg of Quakertown, Pa., Terry Clarke and husband Ken of Wasilla, Alaska; son, Daniel Maes and wife Ida of St. Paul, Minn.; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives. MARCOS M. MAESTAS, 63, of Española, died Wednesday. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jose de la Cruz and Maria Maestas; sister, Augustina Mendoza; brother, Joseph Ricardo Maestas; and nephews, Eugene Mendoza and Robert Maestas. He is survived by his wife, Hua Shi Maestas of Española; daughter, Lucinda Maestas of Los Angeles; four sons, Mark Maestas and wife Ngatokorua and family of Los Angeles, Adrian Maestas of San Francisco, Harry Maestas of Española, and Norman Maestas and family of Los Angeles; three sisters, Mary Maestas, and Edna Kam and husband Gordon all of Los Angeles, and Diana Maestas of Española; two brothers, Frank Maestas and wife Diane of Los Angeles, and Joseph Maestas and wife Diane of Española; and many other relatives and friends. Cremation has taken place. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at La Iglesia de Santa Cruz de la Cañada. Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Saturday at La Iglesia de Santa Cruz de la Cañada with interment to follow at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Cemetery in Española. ORLANDO MONTOYA, 70, of Chimayó, died Wednesday following a lengthy illness. He was born on March 13, 1933. He was preceded in death by his parents, Florian and Patrocinia Montoya; brothers, Lauriano and Felipe Montoya; sisters, Delfinia Montoya and Ignacita Trujillo; nephews, Larry and Phillip Montoya and Rudy Archuleta; in-laws, Mauricio and Andrellita Martinez. He is survived by his devoted wife of 46 years, Lugarda Montoya; daughter, Geraldine and husband Ronald; sons, Andy Montoya, Mauricio and wife Cheryl, Kelly and wife Joann, Michael and Lenore; brothers, Manuel and wife Maria, Gilbert and wife Maria; sisters, Della Vigil, Genoveva and husband Ernesto; six grandchildren; one great-grandson; and many other relatives and friends. A rosary will be recited at 7:45 tonight at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Chimayó. Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Saturday also at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Chimayó. APOLONIO J. ORTIZ, 76, a longtime resident of Las Vegas, N.M., and former resident of Sheridan, passed away Sunday at his home following an extended illness.
He was born in Sheridan on May 31, 1927, to the late Nicolas Ortiz and Adelia Rodriguez Ortiz. He was married to Beatrice Dominguez on Feb. 4, 1950. He retired from the Santa Fe Railroad, where he was employed as a track man for many years. He was an avid fisherman and loved camping and hunting. A lifelong Catholic, he was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church. He was Hermano Mayor De La Morada De Nuestro Padre Jesus in Sheridan and a member of La Sociedad De San Antonio in Los Montoyas. He was always ready and willing to recite the rosary for people in need. He would visit the sick at the nursing homes and at the Northeastern Regional Hospital. He enjoyed being with his family and raised two grandchildren, Ashley and Joe Ortiz. He was preceded in death by his parents, Nicolas and Adelia Ortiz; and wife, Beatrice Ortiz in July 2002. He is survived by his daughters and sons, Martha Ortiz and Mary Rose Ortiz, both of the family home in Las Vegas, N.M., Jenny Chavez and husband Raymond, Nick Ortiz and wife Mary Alice, Paul Ortiz and friend, Cindy Crespin and Ralph Ortiz and wife Rebecca, all of Las Vegas, N.M.; grandchildren, Paul, Matthew, Theresa, Shayna, Isaiah, Joseph, Martin, Julia, Nichole, Joe and Ashley Ortiz, all of Las Vegas, N.M.; eight great-grandchildren; sisters, Rose Trujillo and husband Blas of Sheridan, Dolores Jaramillo and family, and Gertrude Martinez and family, all of Las Vegas, N.M.; brothers, Arturo Ortiz and wife Elena of Albuquerque, and Gomecindo Ortiz and wife Flora of Las Vegas, N.M.; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Immaculate Conception Church. Burial will follow at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Rogers Mortuary of Las Vegas, N.M.
