VICENTI "PEDO" MARTINEZ, 69, of San Juan Pueblo died suddenly Sunday.
He was a lifelong member of the San Juan Pueblo. He served four years in the U.S. Marine Corps and reached the rank of corporal. He was an active member of the Pueblo Council, served as lieutenant governor and twice as governor of the San Juan Pueblo.
He played and managed the San Juan Eagles and Hawks and was an exceptional pitcher and home run hitter and loved hunting and the great outdoors.
He enjoyed spoiling his grandchildren and loved helping anyone in need. He will be missed by the community.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ismael and Tonita Martinez; sisters, Reyecita Aguino, Marie White and Margaret Johnson; brothers, Fidel and Raymond Martinez; grandson, Garret Abeyta and in-laws, Lindo and Bessie Vigil.
He is survived by his wife, Rosalind Martinez of San Juan Pueblo; children, Vince Martinez and wife Teresa of Dulce, Lenny Martinez, Lemuel Martinez and fiancée Roxine, Francis Martinez and wife Margaret, Yvonne Martinez, Shereen Martinez and Bobbian Martinez all of San Juan Pueblo; brothers, Jose Martinez and wife Alice of San Ildefonso, Richard Martinez and wife Eliza of San Juan Pueblo, Joseph E. Martinez of Dulce; sister, Elizabeth Trujillo and husband Joe of San Juan Pueblo; 26 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and many nephews, nieces and other relatives and friends.
Mass will be celebrated 9 a.m. today at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in San Juan Pueblo. Burial will follow at the San Juan Pueblo cemetery.

JOSEPH RAYMOND SWEENEY, SR., 77, of Santa Fe died Thursday. He was born in Glenwood Springs, Colo., and graduated from Harrington Junior High School.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. All who knew Joe will remember his smile, friendly attitude, willingness to help others and sense of humor.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary A. Sweeney; son Anthony Martin Sweeney; parents Antonio (Tony) Sweeney and Eduvigen Cordero-Sweeney; and brother Harry Frank Sweeney.
He is survived by his children, Mary Louise Hurtado and husband Charlie, Raymond Sweeney and wife Rosie, James Sweeney and wife Clara, Barbara Valencia and husband Mike, Patrick Sweeney and girlfriend Melissa Mascarenas, Pearl Dorado and husband Jesse, and Margaret Gonzales and husband Santiago; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives and friends.
He is also survived by his sister Mary Rodriquez; and his brothers, John Sweeney and wife Rose, and Rudy Sweeney and wife Mary.
Visitation will be held 6-7 p.m. Wednesday at Cristo Rey Catholic Church. A rosary will follow at 7 p.m. Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Thursday at the same church. Burial will follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery.

BILLY P. WILLIAMS, 74, of Santa Fe died Friday after a lengthy illness. He was born April 4, 1930, to Curtis and Edith Williams of Kentucky.
He served proudly 20 years in the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of VFW, American Legion and FOE. He was involved in the Korean War. He was a popular car salesman for a prominent dealership in Santa Fe for many years. He also retired from the city of Santa Fe, where he spent happy days as the attendant at St. Francis Cathedral parking lot.
He also enjoyed spending time at the Lone Butte General Store, where he made numerous long lasting friendships. He enjoyed all sports, fishing with his grandsons, hunting, and listening to his favorite bluegrass music, which reminded him of his old Kentucky home.
He had a very outgoing and warm personality. He was loved by many and will be greatly missed!
He is survived by his wife, Martha; son Eloy and wife Debbie; and daughters Geraldine (Jeri) and fiancé Mark, Marlene (Marty) and husband Orlando, Charlene and husband Sammy; sisters, Joyce Miller of Ohio and Betty Smith and husband Brewie; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will he held 5-7 p.m. today with a 7 p.m. rosary at McGee Memorial Chapel Mortuary. Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Francis Cathedral. Burial will follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery.

DR. IRVING A. BUNKIN, 91, died Friday.
He was born in New York City and resided in New York City and Santa Fe. He had a long and distinguished medical career. He graduated from the Univesity of Virginia with a bachelor of science degree and received his M.D. from the New York University College of Medicine, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa. He was a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and a diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He was a captain in the Army Medical Corps during World War II in the South Pacific and served as battalion surgeon in New Guinea and New Britain. Following his military service, he was an associate clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City and was the author of numerous medical and scientific articles. Following his retirement from the medical practice, he served as president of the Friends of Santa Fe Public Library from 1987 to 1989 and assisted the Santa Fe Library with fund-raising, and was chairman of the Santa Fe Library Endowment Fund. He was a founding member of one of Santa Fe's oldest book clubs and served as coordinator of the Book Discussion Club at the Santa Fe Public Library. He was named by the Santa Fe New Mexican as one of 10 Santa Feans who made a difference in the community. He was an avid reader with wide ranging intellectual interests and loved discussions with friends and bird-watching with the Audubon Society. He is survived by his wife, Anke Bunkin; stepson, Colin Kempter; stepgranddaughter, Shannon of Sydney, Australia; Eric Kempter and wife Lee, of Pleasant Hill, Calif.; Reid Kempter, of Santa Fe; one nephew; one niece; and numerous great-nephews and great-nieces. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Temple Beth Shalom in Santa Fe. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any memorial contributions in his name be sent to the Santa Fe Public Library, 145 Washington Ave., Santa Fe, N.M., 87501.

ADELA SANTISTEVAN CHAVEZ, 89, of Ranchos de Taos died Monday. She was born in Cordillera, the daughter of Reymunda Cortez and Alfredo C. Santistevan. She was preceded in death by her mother and father; her sisters, Alicia Santistevan Valerio, Domitila Salazar Quinto and Cleofista Claudia Santistevan; and her husband, Jose Eli Chavez. She is survived by her younger sister, Corina A. Santistevan; three nieces; one nephew; many great-nieces and great-nephews, and many beloved friends. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today at San Francisco de Asis Church with burial to follow at Los Alamitos Cemetery in Los Cordovas. Rivera-Hanlon Funeral Home, 758-3841.

EMILY M. WEBSTER, 79, a longtime resident of Santa Fe, died Friday of a sudden illness. She was born Aug. 28, 1924, to Seth and Isabelle Morton in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. She studied literature and psycholgoy at Sara Laurence College. She is survived by a niece and three nephews. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at McGee Memorial Chapel. GENEVIEVE M. LEACH, 87, died on June 26.
She was born in Houston. She relocated to Santa Fe in 1934, where she married Steven J. Leach in 1935. They had two sons, Steven James Jr. and Cyril John. She started her lifelong career as a Realtor in Midland, Texas, while her husband worked in the oil business. They returned to Santa Fe in 1966, and Genevieve opened her doors in the real estate community. She owned and operated the Leach Company for some 30 years. She was extremely involved in civic affairs, which included the Santa Fe Board of Realtors, the Chamber of Commerce, Fiesta Council, Board of Economic Development, Metropolitan Water Board and the Taste of Santa Fe. She was preceded in death by her husband and sons. She is survived by her brother, John McShaffry and his wife Dorothy of Albuquerque; two nephews; one niece; and several grand-nephews, grand-nieces and cousins. Her extended family encompassed Sonny and Lorraine Otero and family, Elise Sargent and family, Wally and LouAnne Sargent, and Caroline Dewey and her daughter, Andrea Dewey. A private service was held June 29 with burial at Santa Fe Memorial Gardens. THOMAS "TOMMY" MASCARENAS, 40, died on Monday. He was born to Joe L. and Flora S. Mascarenas in Santa Fe on Jan. 2, 1964. Tommy was a carpenter and nature lover, and was known to many as "The Good Neighbor." He was a man of many interests. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Eduardo and Tonita Mascarenas of Penasco, and Elizardo and Sarita Sanchez of Ojo Sarco. He is survived by his parents; son, Tommy Ray Mascarenas; mother of his son, Melissa Mascarenas; son's fiancé, Lara Bertola; daughter, Nicole Sandoval; sister, Amy Boydston and husband Tom; brothers, David "DJ" Mascarenas, Joseph E. Mascarenas and wife Jackie; two great-nephews; and numerous other family members and friends. Visitation will be held 5-7 p.m. today at McGee Memorial Chapel, with a rosary to follow. SADIE MORFIN, 60, of Chili, and formerly of Cortez, Colo., died at home on Tuesday, after a long illness. She was preceded in death by her parents, Medardo and Francisquita Gonzales; brother, Mariano Gonzales; sisters, Beneranda Martinez and Mary Madrid; daughter, Pauline Morfin; and stepson, Melvin Garcia. She is survived by her husband, Tom Morfin of Cortez, Colo.; children, Manuel Morfin of Santa Fe, Sheila Castillo and companion Leopoldo Carrasco of Cortez, Colo., Kia Whiteskunk of Cortez, Colo.; sisters, Margie Mondragon and husband Rudy of Española, and Leonires Chavez of Chili; brother, Walter Gonzales and companion Dolores Herrera of Española; five grandchildren; one great-grandson; and many other relatives and friends. Visitation will be held at 6 tonight in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home, with a rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Friday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Española with burial to follow at the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.
