JEANNE VIVIAN WESTPHALL, 89, of Angel Fire died Sunday in Wichita, Kan. She had recently moved to Andover, Kan., to be close to her son Walter and his family. Along with her husband, Dr. Victor Westphall, they created the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Angel Fire.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Victor Westphall, son, Marine Lt. David Westphall and sister, Grayce Larson. She is survived by her son, Walter Westphall and wife Dorothy, two grandchildren; and sister, Corrine Cowden of Viroqua, Wis.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Vietnam Veterans National Memorial in Angel Fire. Memorial contributions may be made to the Vietnam Veterans National Memorial, P.O. Box 608, Angel Fire, NM 87710. Rivera-Hanlon Funeral Home, (505) 747-7477.

DAVID G. CLIFTON, 79, of Los Alamos since 1957, died Aug. 26 at his home. He was born March 20, 1924, in Pomeroy, Ohio, to Raymond and Helen Clifton. He was a navigator in World War II. He attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, on the G.I. Bill, where he earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in chemistry. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi social fraternity. He earned his doctorate in physical chemistry from Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, in 1955. He continued in the reserves and was honorably discharged June 26, 1958, from the U.S. Air Force. He was initiated into several honoraries, including Phi Beta Kappa. He began his career at Los Alamos National Laboratory in 1957. He worked as a physical chemist on the Rover Program, a large, multi-year effort to design, fabricate and test a nuclear-powered rocket engine. After the Rover Program ended, he worked at TA-55, the Los Alamos National Laboratory Plutonium Facility, as a process development chemist. Many aspects of the plutonium process were studied and improved upon by David and his team. During this period, he developed and patented a plutonium/thorium separation process. Key elements of this process are still used today to achieve this difficult separation. His team also made significant progress on reducing the volume of contaminated waste generated during plutonium treatment.
He was the author of numerous scientific publications, including "Calculations of the Coefficient of Thermal Conductivity for Dissociating Hydrogen" in 1962 and "Measurements of the Viscosity of Krypton" in 1963.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Mary Love and Jane Mendenhall. He is survived by his wife, Charlene; her children; and his nephew, Jim Love, of Sherman Oaks, Calif.
A wake will be held at 2 p.m. Sept. 28 at the Los Alamos Little Theater. A memorial service will be held at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe at 9 a.m. Sept. 29. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the David Clifton Memorial Fund, Los Alamos Little Theater, P.O. Box 211, Los Alamos, N.M., 87544, Att. FLORENCIO GARCIA, 82, of Chama since 1954 died Thursday. He was preceded in death by his parents, Tomas and Guadalupe Garcia; and three sisters, Matilde Archuleta, Juliana Trujillo and Maria Martinez. He is survived by his wife, Theodorita "Teddy" Garcia of the home; children, Angela Atencio and husband Joe Ray of Cebolla, Alonzo Garcia and wife Rosemary of Redondo Beach, Calif., Shirley Present and husband Jack of Springfield, Va., and Toby Garcia and wife Patty of Rio Rancho; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Adelires Trujillo and Atocha Gonzales, both of Española, Piedad Martinez of Utah and Margarita of Grand Junction, Colo.; brothers, Pedro Garcia of Coyote and Tomas Garcia of Utah; nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends.
Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today at the Holy Family Church in Chimayo. Burial will follow at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Cemetery in Espanola.

RICKY "KIKI" MARTINEZ, 33, of Cordova died unexpectedly Wednesday. He was preceded in death by his father, Salomon Martinez; paternal grandparents, Candelario and Senaida Martinez; maternal grandfather, Jeremias Romero; paternal uncle, Jose "Bubbles" Martinez; maternal uncle, Tobias Phillip Romero; cousin, Florence Serna; and paternal aunt, Celonires Montoya.
He is survived by his twin daughters, Sherry and Cheryl Martinez of Chamita; son, Rick Nelson Martinez Jr. of Chamita; mother, Anita R. Martinez of Cordova; brother, Don E. Martinez of Cordova; sisters, Durine Aguilar and husband Ricky of Cordova and Julie Ann Sandoval and husband RayBen of Truchas; grandmother, Celida Romero of Cordova; mother of his children, Lorrie Martinez of Chamita; three nieces, Jamaica and Savannah Aguilar, both of Cordova, and Reina Sandoval of Truchas; two nephews, RayBen "Wedo" Sandoval of Truchas and John Gutierrez Sr. of Cordova; two great nephews, Jesus and John Gutierrez Jr.; close uncles, Herman Romero of Cordova and Leroy Leyba of Chimayó; aunt, Emily Lopez of Sacramento, Calif.; and numerous other close relatives and friends.
He loved to joke, and he loved music, fishing, hunting and wood carving. He was very artistic and loved to work on crafts. He was very close and loved his nephews and nieces. He loved spending time with his mother and brother and would take them everywhere, and he was like an older brother to his nephews and nieces.
Visitation will be held 5:30 p.m. Sunday in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home with a 6 p.m. rosary. A devotional service will also be held 7 p.m. Sunday in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home. Mass will be celebrated 2 p.m. Monday at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Truchas with burial to follow at the Cordova Cemetery.

MARIA AMELIA SALAZAR, 98, of Ranchos de Taos died Friday. She was an avid reader and enjoyed crocheting, sewing and sketching. She especially enjoyed her Bible tapes, hearing about Jesus, and she also enjoyed her time with her family. She was kind and generous and will be fondly remembered as a loving grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Feliberto Salazar; sons, Manuel and Calmaco Reynaldo Salazar; and daughter, Maria Benita Salazar. She is survived by her children, Benita Salazar of Ranchos de Taos, Ruth Rodriguez of Llano Quemado, Eusebio Salazar, Bernabe Salazar (Juanita), Anita Salazar, and Feliberto Salazar Jr. (Selma), all of Ranchos de Taos; 24 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Rosaries will be recited 7 p.m. today and Sunday at San Francisco de Asis Catholic Church. Mass will be celebrated 11:30 a.m. Monday at San Francisco de Asis Church with burial to follow at San Francisco Cemetery.

AMARANTE "MONTE" N. CHAVEZ, 92, of Santa Fe died Monday. He was born in Tesuque, the son of Lucas and Bonifacia Chavez. He married Ramona Fresquez in 1952 in Santa Fe. He was employed by La Fonda from 1924 to 1990. He was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church and a Golden Eagle member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles. He was preceded in death by all his brothers and sisters. He is survived by his wife, Ramona Chavez; sons, Mike Chavez, Robert E. Chavez and wife Ruth; daughters, Marie Gallegos and husband Mike, May Roybal and husband Joe, Diana M. Candelaria and husband Steve, Josephine Perea and husband Ernest; 22 grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. A visitation will be held at 6 p.m. with a rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at the same church. LOUISE B. CASTELLANO, 88, of Santa Fe died Saturday of Alzheimer's disease. A visitation will be held at 2 p.m. with rosaries to be recited at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. today at Berardinelli Family Chapel. CHUCK DUNN, 72, of Santa Fe died unexpectedly Monday. An Easterner by birth, but Westerner by heart, he and his wife moved to Santa Fe in 1996. He was involved in the printing industry for all his adult working life, serving as the president of two large printing companies in Virginia and North Carolina until the 1980s, and then as the owner/operator, with his wife, of Pronto Press in Covington, Va. He and his wife published the Photomaps of Santa Fe, Old Town Albuquerque and Taos. He never met a stranger, and loved a great glass of wine and his wife. He is survived by his wife, Gayle Dunn; son, Doug Henson and wife Andrea; two grandchildren; and daughters, April Joyce Dunn of Virginia Beach, Va., and Joanna South Dunn Samson and husband David of Washington, Conn. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Art Smart c/o Ventana Fine Art, 400 Canyon Road, Santa Fe, N.M., 87501. LARRY N. ROMERO SR., 38, of Chimayó died Sunday after a short illness. He loved to work on his low riders. He weaved for Ortega's in 1986. He loved to eat sweets and being with his children. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Crystal Romero; and father, Tobias Romero. He is survived by his mother, Betty Romero and companion Leo Ortega of Chimayó; children, Nicole Romero of Chimayó, Crystal Romero and Larry Romero Jr. both of Española; mother of his children, Sandra Martinez of Española; brothers and sisters, Leland Romero and wife Francine of Chimayó, Monica Valdez and husband Vicente of Chimayó; fiancée, Sandra Herrera of El Rancho; and many other relatives and friends. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Chimayó. EVANGELINA L. ABEYTA, 93, died Tuesday. She was born in Chamisal. She loved people and volunteered for many years with various organizations. She was the patriarch of her family, leading them to live and lead successful lives. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edilio Abeyta; son, Eddie J. Abeyta; and daughter, Elena Abeyta. She is survived by her sisters, Maria Herrera and husband Gilberto, Tiofila Lopez, and Elba Roybal and husband Miguel; and many other relatives. A visitation will be held at 6 p.m. with a rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. today in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home. A second rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Friday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Peñasco. ROSENALDO "ROSS" REYES ATENCIO, 51, of Santo Niño, died unexpectedly Monday. He loved the outdoors, sports and family gatherings. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jose Lifar and Gregorita Atencio. He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou Atencio of Albuquerque; children, Eric and Marla Atencio, both of Albuquerque; four grandchildren; brothers, Eddie Atencio and wife Helen of Las Vegas and Ronald Atencio of Santo Niño; sisters, Margie Carrillo and husband Al of Santa Fe, Effie Mondragon and husband Gilbert of Tooele, Utah, Catherine Hernandez and husband Joe, Lorraine Mata and husband Pablo, all of Santa Fe, Georgette Ayers and husband Jeff of El Guache and Yvonne Vigil and companion Adrian Roybal of Santa Fe; and many other relatives and friends. Cremation has taken place. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Friday at the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home.
