BERNICE Thompson ZUCAL of Santa Fe died Aug. 21 at her daughter's home in Corte Madera, Calif. She was born in Worcester, Mass. PAUL MEDINA, 55, of Las Vegas, N.M., died Monday. He was born in Farley to the late Jose Manuel Medina and Antonia Frances Martinez. He worked for many years as chef for Theresa's Restaurant. ALBERT SANCHEZ, 82, died Monday. He was born in San Marcial. He served his country as a corporal in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He worked for the railroad, was the first motorcycle police officer for the Santa Fe Police Department, and later retired from Mountain Bell. He was preceded in death by his son, Gary Sanchez. LEO "CHAMFER" ARCHULETA, 59, of Watrous died Thursday.
He worked for the state Highway Department for the past 20 years. He was an Operator 2 with the bridge crew. He loved spending time with his wife fishing, playing horseshoes and camping. He enjoyed hunting with his sons.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Pedro and Lucy Archuleta.

JOHN A. DI JANNI, 94, of Santa Fe died Tuesday.
He had a long and impressive musical career. In 1936, he became principal violist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in New York, succeeding his father, Albino DiJanni. For nine years, he and his father occupied the first desk. He was appointed personnel manager of the orchestra by Sir Rudolf Bing in 1969 while still maintaining his post as principal violist. He devoted a great deal of his time as faculty member of the Congress of Strings at Michigan State University and Skidmore College mentoring outstanding string players competitively selected to participate in this endeavor, sponsored by the American Federation of Musicians. During his summer engagements from 1960 to 1964, he was appointed principal violist of the Santa Fe Opera under the leadership of John O. Crosby. He also played at that time as principal of the Santa Fe Concert Association under the leadership of John Mullen. Upon his retirement in 1975 from the Metropolitan Opera, he and his wife moved to Santa Fe, where he became principal violist of the Orchestra of Santa Fe (1976-1979), Santa Fe Symphony (1981-1986) and Roswell Symphony (1987-1992), and played in the New Mexico Symphony and the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival. He was a faculty member at the University of New Mexico (1980-1985). He has played as principal violist under such world-famous conductors as Artur Bodansky, Igor Stravinsky, Paul Hindemith, Dimitri Metropoulus, Andre Kostalanitz, Eric Leinsdorf, Julius Rudel, Fritz Reiner, Bruno Walter, Leonard Bernstein, John Crosby, Cesare Sodero, George Salti, Pierre Boulez and Kurt Masur.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and of the Masonic Montezuma Lodge No. 1, both in Santa Fe; Euclid Lodge in Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.; and Local 802 of the American Federation of Musicians. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Albino and Regina Di Janni; brothers, Joseph Di Janni and Ralph Lucia; and sister, Aida La Rosa.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Rupp Di Janni; sons, John C. Di Janni and wife, Jan, and Robert A. Di Janni and wife, Maureen; five grandchildren; sisters, Angela Murphy of New York and Albina Giordano of New Jersey; and many other relatives, friends, and students.
A memorial service will be held at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church on Grant Avenue. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Santa Fe Youth Symphony, 551 W. Cordova Road, No. 190, Santa Fe, N.M., 87505.

MARIANITA LOPEZ, 92, of Santa Fe died Wednesday.
She was born and raised in Cienega, Rancho de Guicú, on the Simms ranch, where she often rode her horse Prince through the hills. A boarder and graduate of Loretto Academy, she taught grades one through eight in a one-room classroom in Cienega. She entertained her family with humor. Her hobbies included reading and sewing. She was a parishioner of Cristo Rey Church, where she was a member of the Altar Society. In 1934, she married Juan Pablo Lopez and was a loving matriarch to their large family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Juan Pablo; son, Paul Orlando; and daughter, Anita.
She is survived by her children, Mary Catanach and husband Jerry, Sylvia Lopez, and David Lopez and wife Liz; 11 grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

GRACE B. MARSHALL, 74, of Santa Fe died Saturday after a long illness.
She was born in Pojoaque. She earned her master's degree in secondary education and taught in the Española and Santa Fe school systems for about 25 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jose Maria Bustos Sr. and Margarita Shoemaker Bustos.
She is survived by her sisters, Teresa B. Borrego and, husband Juan F.; Celsa B. Lucero and husband, Tom; Margarita B. Trujillo and husband, Henry; Concha B. Collier and husband, Perry; and many other relatives.
