LARRY MCDOWELL, 68, of Antonito, Colo., died Thursday following injuries he sustained in an automobile accident.
He was preceded in death by his father, O.V. McDowell and stepmother, Gladys McDowell.
He is survived by sons, David Carter of San Antonio, Texas, Larry Kevin McDowell of Boise, Idaho, and Darren Cole McDowell of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; sister, Jeannie Pierret of Garrettson, S.D.; wife, Rosina McDowell of Antonito, Colo.; mother of his children, Norma McDowell of Williams, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren; and numerous other relatives and friends.
A service will be held at 11 a.m. in the Sangro de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home with burial to follow at the Pilar Cemetery.

CORINA C. ORTIZ, 90, of Santa Fe died Monday.
She was born Feb. 8, 1913, in El Rito, to Marcelino and Constancia Chavez. She married Alfredo Ortiz in Santa Fe in November 1933. She was a homemaker and a part-time bailiff at the First Judicial District Court. She was also a member of Cristo Rey Catholic Church, St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, and a member of St. Francis Third Order Society.
She was preceded in death by her parents Constancia and Marcelino Chavez; husband, Alfredo Ortiz; grandson, Daniel Ortiz; granddaughter, Geraldine Montoya; brother, Jose Chavez; sisters: Lorraine Sena, Tita Delgado and Frances Galindo.
She is survived by her son, Eduardo Ortiz; daughters: Theresa O. Kline and husband Doyle, and Virginia Ortiz; nine grandchildren; sisters: Mary Mignardo and Rebecca Lucero; brother, Robert Chavez; and many relatives and friends.
Her family wishes to express their sincere thanks for the tender, good care given to Corina by employees of La Residencia, and more recently by the Santa Fe Care Center.
Visitation begins 6 p.m. Wednesday with a 7 p.m. rosary at Berardinelli Family Chapel. Mass will be celebrated 9 a.m. Thursday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery.

JOSE MOISES ORTIZ, 86, of La Cuevea died Saturday after a lengthy illness.
He was born Sept. 17, 1917, to Melquiades and Josefita Ortiz.
He was a veteran of World War II and received the Purple Heart for an injury her received on the Anzio beach head. He married Lala on Sept. 10, 1945. He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service as a contractor, and delivered the mail for 28 years from Glorieta to Terrero and Cowles. He retired in 1985 and stayed home for a short period, then was employed by the U.S. Forest Service on a part-time basis. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, American Legion and La Sociedad de Nuestro Padre Jesus. He will be dearly missed by his family and all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Geraldine J. Ortiz; great granddaughter, Deserie Gonzales; his parents; brothers, Ernesto, Melquiades Jr., and Pablo; and in-laws, Beatrice and Domitilia Lucero.
He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Lala L. Ortiz; daughter, Socorro Roybal and husband Larry; son, Jose "Jody" Ortiz Jr. and fiancé Lucy Chavez; brothers, Arsenio and wife Cecilia of Pecos; Toby and wife Helen of Albuquerque; Larry and wife Mary Ann of Pecos; sisters: Esmenia Cordova of Jacona, Carmen Ortiz of Pecos, Theresa Hendren and husband Victor, and Celina Roybal and husband Noberto; seven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; special niece, Diane Ontiveros of Riverside, Calif.; and many other relatives.
Visitation begins 4 p.m. today with a 7 p.m. rosary at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Pecos. Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Wednesday at the same church. Interment will follow at Pecos Cemetery.

JENNIE QUINTANA PADILLA, 80, of Santa Fe died Friday after a lengthy illness.
She was born June 9, 1923, in Santa Fe to Francisco Quintana and Francisca Garcia-Quintana, the third of seven children. She was raised in the family home at 365 E. Palace Ave. by her parents and her special Grandma, Donaciana Barranca de Garcia. Grandma Garcia was very special to Jennie and taught her many skills, which included sewing by hand and cooking the best meals, especially tortillas. Grandma Garcia also taught Jennie the power of healing with herbs, and Jennie generously shared that knowledge with her family and friends. She treated everyone in her life with respect and kindness; she taught her children to be respectful, to love and be proud of their families.
At age 16, she married Daniel M. Padilla on Oct. 16, 1939, at the St. Francis Cathedral. They were blessed with 63 years of marriage and renewed their vows on their 50th anniversary, in 1989, at San Isidro Church. She raised six children; two boys and four girls. She also had the pleasure of helping raise her grandchildren and great-grand children, as well as several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her son, Antonio "Gordo;" and by her "Viejo" of 63 years, Daniel.
She is survived by her brother, Elias Quintana and wife Alice of Phoenix City, Ariz.; children, Tomas Padilla and partner Marcy Magoon, Albuquerque; Tessie and husband David LaBute of Woodhaven, Mich.; Frances and husband Robert Martinez of Santa Fe, Rose Ortiz of Pojoaque, Maria Padilla and husband Floyd Lucero of Santa Fe; 19 grandchildren; 26 great-grand children; two great-great-grand children; special nieces and nephews Caroline, Nadia and Richard Malczewski; Catherine Cervantes; Peter Raymond Garcia; Dickie and Berna Quintana and her brother-in-law Rudy Rosales.
She will be greatly missed.
In lieu of flowers, as is her request, donations may be made to the American Lung Association.
Visitation is 3-5 p.m. today at Berardinelli Family Chapel. A rosary will be recited during the visitation at 4:00 given by La Union Protectiva Feminina of which Jennie was a proud member. Another visitation is 6 p.m. at the old San Isidro Church with a 7 p.m. rosary. Mass will be celebrated 1 p.m. Wednesday at the same church. Interment is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at Santa Fe National Cemetery.

MATTHEW ROY RIVERA, 9, died Sunday.
He was a third grade student at Ranchos Elementary.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Joe Rivera.
He is survived by his parents, Yesenia Devona Concha and Larry Rivera; brother, Steven Lee Rivera, sister; Samantha Anna Rivera; and many relatives and friends.
Mass will be celebrated today at San Francisco de Asis Catholic Church with burial to follow at San Francisco Cemetery.

HELEN BRUNN WHEELER, 84, of Santa Fe died Saturday.
Helen Wheeler was born Nov. 7, 1919, in Buffalo, N.Y., and grew up in Kew Gardens in Queensborough, New York City. She graduated summa cum laude in chemistry from Wells College in 1940, and on Aug. 23, 1941, married Lawrence Wheeler of Sterling, Ill.
During her 62o years of married life she lived where her husband's occupation took them: Dallas, Cambridge, Mass., and Petersburg, Va., but for 27 years lived in Sterling, Ill., where her husband's business was located and where their children grew up. She was very active in public life there and was honored as the first woman in that community to receive the prestigious Lincoln Award for outstanding public service.
Later in life she qualified herself as a medical technologist and, while her husband left his business to teach at various universities, she followed him and practiced as a med tech in several medical clinics. Her husband's teaching assignments took them to various places in the United States, Japan, Taiwan, Germany, Spain and Crete. During this time, she practiced her profession when possible and made a home, sometimes when abroad under difficult and unfamiliar conditions. She learned foreign languages and traveled extensively.
In 1981 she and her husband retired to Santa Fe. She once again entered into community activities and served on the board of the Desert Chorale, the Tierra de Oro Neighborhood Association and participated in the Santa Fe Community Foundation Friends.
She is survived by her children, Peter of Sterling, Ill., David of Woodacre, Calif., Ann and husband James of Carlisle, Mass., and John of Littleton, Colo.; her husband; and eight grandchildren.
Her remains were cremated and a family memorial gathering will be held at a future date. Memorials may be given to the Santa Fe Community Foundation (P.O. Box 1827, Santa Fe, NM 87501) or a charity of choice.
