John Jensen, 32, of Los Alamos, a Santa Fe-area search-and-rescue team member, was killed in an avalanche on Sunday while taking an avalanche-education class in the Elk Mountains near Aspen, Colo.
Jensen and five others were taking a Level 2 avalanche-training class through Aspen Expeditions, a local outfitter.
The owner of Aspen Expeditions, Dick Jackson, issued a statement Wednesday providing full details of the incident.
According to the statement, the small group was skiing one at a time from one "safe island" to another across a slope off Highlands Ridge outside the Aspen Highlands Ski Area. The skiers were to follow carefully in a lead guide's tracks. Jensen went third, and after five turns lost control and fell. This triggered an avalanche above him.
Jensen was recovered by members of the group and by Mountain Rescue Aspen in approximately 30 minutes but did not respond to CPR, according to the statement.
A lifetime outdoorsman, Jensen signed up for the class as a member of the Atalaya Search and Rescue team in Santa Fe. The team is working toward a certification from the Mountain Rescue Association, a national organization that specializes in technical rescues.
"We've been sending people to different Level 2 courses all around Colorado," said Reed Shelton, the president of Atalaya Search and Rescue. "It's really hard. John did everything right to keep himself safe. You don't expect someone to die in an avalanche-training class."
Jensen was born in northern California and learned to ski in kindergarten. He joined the Boy Scouts in middle school, where he learned to snow camp. He became an Eagle Scout at 14. In high school, Jensen was involved in search and rescue and became very active in church activities.
Jensen traveled around the world, heading to Siberia, Bolivia and Moscow on church missions with the group Campus Crusade International, said Sue Jensen, his mother.
In 2003, he graduated from the University of Texas with a master's degree in mechanical engineering. He then accepted an internship with Los Alamos National Laboratory.
Jensen was an active member of the Crossroads Bible Church in Los Alamos and taught Bible study there.
Donations can be made to Campus Crusade International.
A service for Jensen will be held at the Crossroads Bible Church after services are held at his parents' home near Sonora, Calif.
