BENJAMIN CASADOS, 80, of Chamisal died Thursday.
He loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing and taking walks. He had a great sense of humor. His grandchildren were his life and he loved them dearly. He retired from the Forest Service as a Hot Shot firefighting crew chief.
He was preceded in death by his father, Benino Casados; mother, Juanita Lopez; son, Wayne Casados; daughter, Matilda Casados; and sister, Maria Martinez.
He is survived by his wife, Edonila Casados; children, Jeannette Sanchez and husband Jose, Charlene Casados-Armijo and husband Vincente, Fermin Casados and wife Grace, Mary Jane Casados and Benino Casados; 11 grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
A public visitation will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Peñasco with a rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at the same church with burial to follow at Chamisal Catholic Cemetery in Chamisal.

ROBERT (BOB) W. HAYES, 68, of Pojoaque died Thursday after a long illness.
He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother. He served in the military for over 25 years and was a member of the John D. Gamble VFW Post 8874 of Los Alamos.
He is survived by his wife, Sammie Hayes; children, Rita, Rhonda and Tim Hayes; three grandchildren; sisters, Marilyn Whiteman and husband Elmer, Beverly Fitch and husband Greg, Jeanne Marr and husband Dave; and brother, Wendell Hayes and wife Hope.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be sent to the Santa Fe Animal Shelter or the American Heart Association.
A visitation will be held from 9-11 a.m. Tuesday at Berardinelli Family Chapel followed by a graveside service at 11:30 a.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.

LOIS PETERS, 98, of Rio Chama died Friday after a short illness.
She loved spending time in the outdoors. She won an award from the National Rifle Association. She enjoyed all her vacations with TWA and visited many countries. She lived a happy life residing with her caregivers Theresa and Bert Molina and their family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Stan Peters; parents, Luis and Ella Garberson; sister, Neva Waldorf; and brother, Claude Garberson.
She is survived by her friend and caregiver, Theresa Molina and husband Bert; best companion Sofia Chavez; and the sons of her caregiver, Esiquio Molina and Bert Molina Jr., all of Rio Chama.

JUSTIN GABRIEL ALCON, 31, of Taos and a longtime resident of Cañoncito in Mora County died Saturday due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
He was born in Las Vegas, N.M. to Eddy D. Alcon and Lucille E. Leyba. He worked as a landscaper for High Country Trees. He loved the mountains, digging trees, camping, spending time with his son fishing, seeking elk antlers and especially spending time with his family (Zoo Crew). He was a happy person who always had a beautiful smile. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Cleveland.
He is survived by his son, Bryan Levi Alcon and Bryan's mother Andrea Sterling of Santa Fe; companion, Melissa Martinez and her children, Marie Elena, Jeremy, Larry and Santiago, all of Taos; mother, Lucille E. Longoria and husband, Gabe, of Oxona, Texas; father, Eddy D. Alcon and wife, Jeanette, of Cañoncito; sisters, Rochelle J. Alcon of Albuquerque and Andrea B. Trujillo of Cleveland, N.M. and her father, Benji Trujillo, of Ledoux; stepsisters, Viola Garcia and husband, Marcos, and Michael Olivas and friend Ray Salcido, all of Albuquerque; stepbrother, Gabriel Longoria III and stepsisters, Jerilynn and Analicia Longoria, both of Laekey, Texas; paternal grandparents who also raised him; Levi Sr. and Alice Alcon of Cañoncito; and many other relatives and friends.
A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. today at the Church of Christ in Cleveland with burial to follow at the Casa De La Cruz Ranch (Eddy and Jeanette Alcon's ranch) in Cañoncito. Family and friends will be received at the homes of Eddy and Jeanette Alcon of Cañoncito or Mabel and Eloy Leyba of Mora.

LCPL JONATHAN W. GRANT, 23, of Española died Wednesday.
He was killed in action in Iraq while proudly serving his country in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was raised in Pojoaque. He attended Pojoaque Valley Schools and went on to continue his education at Northern New Mexico Community College, majoring in criminal justice. He was employed in security at the Big Rock Casino in Española. He joined the Marines in February 2002 and was deployed to Iraq at the end of February 2005. He enjoyed sports, working out, custom cars and being with his family. He was a devoted father, fiance, son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin and friend.
He is survived by his fiancée, Eva Maestas; children, Cynthia and Evan Grant, all of Española; mother, Alma Roybal and stepfather Larry of El Rancho; father, Felix Griego of Tesuque; sisters and brothers, Alana Roybal of El Rancho, Felicia Griego of Taos, Marissa Hurtado of Santa Fe, Lorin, Travis and Isaiah Roybal, all of El Rancho and Isaac Hurtado of Santa Fe; special cousins, Julian and Jeremy Valdez, Amorina Serrano and Deva, Alyssa and Anita Olivas; close friends, Anthony Naranjo, Roycito Romero, John Brooks, Chris Ortiz, Brandi Martinez; and many other relatives and friends.
A rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Ben Lujan Gymnasium in Pojoaque. Mass will be celebrated at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Pojoaque with burial to follow at 2:30 p.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.

DAN VIETS LOMAHAFTEWA, 54, of Santa Fe died April 14 due to a sudden illness.
He was born in Phoenix to Mary and Clifford Lomahaftewa. He was of Hopi-Choctaw descent. He received his BFA cum laude with the Award for Excellence in painting from Arizona State University. He was an internationally known artist. His work has been exhibited widely within the United States, Germany, France, Japan, Russia, and the United Kingdom. He was the poster artist for the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts in 1993 and received the Woody Crumbo Memorial Award for Excellence in Painting. He was a grant recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts and Arts International and was a cultural delegate of the Assemblee Nationale in Paris and had received many other prestigious awards. He was prolific in a variety of media including print making, monotypes, acrylics and most recently jewelry.
He is survived by his mother, Mary Lomahaftewa of Phoenix; former wife, Julie Lomahaftewa; daughter, Loren; son, Skyler Lomahaftewa of Ft. Duchesne, Utah; sisters, Linda Lomahaftewa of Santa Fe and Gloria Lomahaftewa of Phoenix; brother, Clifford Woody Lomahaftewa; and many other relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held from 5-7 p.m. Saturday at the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) Library and Technology Center Auditorium, 83 Avan Nu Po Road, Santa Fe, NM 87508. For information, call 424-5704.

AARON SEAN ANTONIO ORTEGA-PEREZ, 21, of Pecos died Saturday.
He was an outgoing guy with big plans for his future. He graduated from Pecos High School in 2002 and from New Mexico State University in 2005. He worked at the Town and Country store. He always wore a big smile and was ready to lend a helping hand.
He is survived by his mother, Josephine M. Perez; brothers, Fabian Valencia and Arthur Perez Jr.; sister, Jessica M. Perez and Michael Vasquez; close nephews, Anthony and Louis; special friend, Paige Valdez; special cousin and friend, Matthew and Megan; the love of his life, grandmother Eluteria Lujan; special goddaughter Gracie Valencia; and many other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held from 3-5 p.m. Wednesday at St. Anthony's Church in Pecos. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. at the church the same day. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Anthony's with burial to follow at St. Anthony's cemetery.
