Edmund Thomas Curda, a journalist turned Benedictine Monk, died Sunday as a result of head injuries.
He had been picking acorns off a tree from the roof of Our Lady of Guadalupe Abbey in Pecos, where he was a brother, according to Father Bob Lussier. An avid hunter, nature-lover and gardener, Curda lost his balance or slipped coming back in from the roof and fell down the stairs, eventually succumbing to head injuries four days later, Lussier said.
Curda decided to become a monk because he thought the monastic life would provide the truth Curda hadn't found as an editor and journalist, Lussier said.
"Ed was brought up in a very spiritual family, and being a newspaper person, he was dealing with searching for the truth. He found it was impossible to do in the newspaper industry, and he realized there had to be a better way to continue to search for that," he said.
In 1975, after serving four years in army intelligence including tours in South Korea and Vietnam, Curda took a job with the Telegram in Temple, Texas. After earning a master's degree in journalism in 1977, he moved to the El Paso Times, where he covered the city and politics beats.
In 1984 he made a retreat to Our Lady of Guadalupe in Pecos, where he decided to become a monk.
"He was always searching for something," said his older brother, Jerry Curda. "He was an avid hunter and he took his camera and took some beautiful pictures on those trips. You meet God face to face in the mountains where all of that beauty is."
Jerry said his brother was impressed with the community and the love that he found in Pecos, and had become disillusioned with the media and the newspaper business. Jerry remembered a number of instances where articles Ed was working on had been shot down by his editors because they reflected badly on businesses that paid advertising dollars to the newspaper.
In recent phone conversations with his brother, Jerry said he was "dismayed by the lack of energy (his brother) had," and by numerous health problems. "He felt he wasn't doing enough for the community," Jerry said.
Curda's main work at the monastery was editing, writing and shooting photographs for the abbey's newsletter— a job at which he excelled and for which he will be sorely missed, Lussier said.
When brothers at the monastery found blood at the bottom of the stairs where Curda fell, they at first thought someone had broken into the compound and committed a robbery. Lussier said that when he heard there was bag of acorns next to the blood he knew it was Curda who had been hurt.
"He missed evening prayer and we didn't think anything about it, because every once in awhile he gets occupied with something makes him late for prayer or miss it entirely," Lussier said.
Curda had made his way to his bed in his room, where brothers found him about two hours after the fall. After police and paramedics arrived he was flown to the trauma center at the University of New Mexico, where he died.
Jerry Curda said the family has plans to publish some of Curda's photographs and writing from his brother's sizable collection.
