ALBERTA Y. BARNES, 68, of Santa Fe died July 16.
She was born in Ochlocknee, Ga. She received her nursing certificate with high honors from Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta in 1957. She worked as a pediatric nurse in Illinois prior to joining the U.S. Air Force in 1959, and she became a medical/surgical nurse. She was honorably discharged with the rank of captain in 1966 after administering to troops in Vietnam. She received a bachelor of science degree in nursing and then worked at St. Vincent hospital in Santa Fe from 1967-1984. She was director of nursing for 10 years. She worked for Dr. Gundzik from 1984-1989 and was employed by the state in 1989 as a surveyor for health facility and licensing until her retirement in 2003. During her career, she continued expanding her areas of expertise in her chosen humanitarian field and was happy with her accomplishments. She was a caring friend and a wonderful mother, grandmother and sister.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Lucille Brower; and brother, Nathaniel Brower.
She is survived by her daughter, Angelyn; one granddaughter; ex-husband, Johnny Gilbert Barnes of Arizona; brothers, Roscoe Brower and Odis Brower, both of Dublin, Ga.; sisters, Doris Smith of Hartford, Conn., Estelle Gordon of Macon, Ga., and Margaret Morris of Simsbury, Conn.; and many other relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Berardinelli Family Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the charity of your choice.

JESUSTIA GARCIA, 92, of LeDoux died July 16 at Alta Vista Regional Hospital.
She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Garcia of LeDoux; five grandchildren; brothers, Amadeo Gonzales of Pueblo, Colo., Pete Gonzales and wife Stella, and Casimiro Gonzales, both of Rawlins, Wyo.; stepsons, Floyd Garcia and wife Gloria of Taos and Sabino Garcia and wife Irene of El Carmen; and many other relatives and friends.
Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today at St. Gertrude Catholic Church with burial to follow at the LeDoux Cemetery.

PAULITA "POLLY" KENNEDY, 79, of Los Alamos died July 15 at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center.
She was born in Pecos to Geronimo and Paulita Gonzales. She graduated from Pecos High School. She worked as a welder in the ship yards of California, serving as a "Rosie the Welder" during World War II. After the war, she was employed in Los Alamos, where she met and married James C. Kennedy. She was a high energy, "salt of the earth" individual with the ability to find time to pursue her own personal interests while attending to the substantial nurturing needs of her eight children. Her interests included flower gardening— especially orchids, dolls, ceramics, photography and crossword puzzles. She was a devoted, tolerant and loving mother.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James C. Kennedy.
She is survived by her brothers, Ricardo, Silviano, and Gerry G. Gonzales; children, Patrick, Brian, Ann, James, Polly and Erick Loucks, Kevin, Maureen and Chris Holland, Kerry and Dirk Cussler; nine grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be celebrated at 11 a.m. today followed by a reception at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Los Alamos with burial to follow at 1:30 p.m. at Guaje Pines Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Los Alamos.

HELEN MARGARET KOOI, 85, of Santa Fe died July 17.
She was born in Hammond, Ind., the daughter of J.W. and Maude Hitt. She lived the majority of her life in Lansing, Ill. She was a restaurant proprietor in suburban Chicago from the 1940s through 1960s. She and her husband moved to Clearwater, Fla., in 1975. She lived in Santa Fe since April 2002.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter Kooi; sisters, Julia and Dollie; and brother, Howard.
She is survived by her daughter, Carol Jacobson of Lansing, Ill.; sons, Peter A. Kooi and wife Mari of Santa Fe and Donald Kooi and wife Suzanne of Dallas; 10 grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at the Berardinelli Family Chapel.

DANIEL A. MARTINEZ, 82, of El Rito died July 17 after a long illness.
He retired from Northern New Mexico Community College. He enjoyed the beautiful outdoors.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel and Cresencia Martinez; and brothers, Daniel and Juanito Martinez.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Cristela Martinez of El Rito; son, Dan Martinez Jr. and wife Eva of Albuquerque; daughters, Mary Chavez and Annabelle Martinez of El Rito; five grandchildren; sister, Maria Inez Vigil and husband Olivar of El Rito; and many other relatives and friends.
A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at the San Juan Nepomuceno Catholic Church in El Rito. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the same church with burial to follow at the El Rito Cemetery.

LUZ O. ORTIZ, 94, of Pojoaque died July 15.
She was employed as a personal maid and cook to Mrs. Cyrus McCormick Jr. She continued her employment with many other prominent residents of the Nambé and Pojoaque area.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Amado Ortiz; parents, Antonio and Epimenia Ortiz; sister, Manuelita; and brothers, Alberto Ortiz, Luis Ortiz and wife Clotilde; Joaquin Ortiz and wife Clorinda.
She is survived by her son, Edwin Ortiz and wife Frances of Nambé Pueblo; stepson, Joseph A. Ortiz and wife Amy of California; and many other relatives and friends. A visitation will be at 6 p.m. today at the Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe Catholic Church in Pojoaque with a rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the same church with burial to follow at the Pojoaque Cemetery.

ALVIN TRUJILLO, 27, of Española died July 14.
He worked in Los Alamos and at the Giant gas station in Santa Fe. He worked in construction as a framer for 10 years. He had been working out with weights and enjoyed hunting. He often joked around with his family and friends and loved to make everyone laugh. He loved music, especially rap and Spanish. He loved spending time with his son.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Lenny Pacheco.
He is survived by his son, Nathaniel Trujillo of Española; companion and mother of his son, Melissa Redman; mother, Diane Pacheco; father, Paul Trujillo; siblings, Sabrina Pacheco, Franchesca Gurule and Daniel Gurule, both of Clovis, David Sisneros of Española, Ray Lopez, Paul Lopez, Dean Lopez, and Stacy Lopez; and many other relatives and friends.
Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. today at the Santa Cruz de la Cañada with burial to follow at the San Miguel Cemetery.
