ROSALIA ORTIZ, 76, of Española, died Tuesday after a short illness. She was preceded in death by her father, Isidro Rios. She is survived by her children, Servando Rios and wife Esiqua Estrada, Romelia Rios and husband Ruben, Neftali Rios and wife Leticia, Obed Rios and wife Lupe, Eidy Rios and wife Lucy, all of Rio En Medio, Oscar Rios and wife Sylvia of Chupadero, and Nery Olivas and husband Celso; brothers, Jorge Ortiz and wife Sofia, Enrique Ortiz and wife Isabel, all of Mexico; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services are being held in Mexico. DeVargas Funeral Home of the Española Valley, 747-7477.

EDITH L. SCHAFFNER, 87, of Santa Fe, died Oct. 30 at home. She was a volunteer for the St. Vincent Hospital Auxiliary. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Gordon A. Schaffner; son Edward Visconte; four grandsons; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service has been held. McGee Memorial Chapel Mortuary, 983-9151.

ANDRES "ANDY" ANAYA, 82, of Galisteo died Friday following a brief illness. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and returned to Galisteo where he worked for the Santa Fe Railroad for 43 years, retiring in 1985. He was also a member of La Union Protectiva.
He was preceded in death by his son, Michael Anaya; granddaughter, Darlene Anaya; parents; and brother, Tranquill Anaya.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Josephine Anaya; children, Florence Anaya, Raymond and wife Genevieva Anaya, Jake and wife Theresa Anaya, Jimmy and wife Patsy Anaya, Kathy and husband Jose Lopez; God son, Vernon and wife Chan Anaya; 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
A rosary will be recited at 3 p.m. today at Berardinelli Family Chapel. A second rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at Our Lady of Remedios in Galisteo. Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at Our Lady of Remedios, time is pending, please call Berardinelli Family Funeral Service at 984-8600 for information.

HARVEY ARELLANO, 45, of Dixon died Friday following a lengthy illness. He was a well-known tree pruner in the Dixon area.
He was preceded in death by his favorite uncle, Tobias Dennis Suazo; grandmother, Juanita Suazo; and nephews, Amos and Arnold Arellano.
He is survived by his parents, Jose and Lillian Arellano of Dixon; son, Harvey Arellano Jr. of El Guache; sister, Velma Sanchez and husband Pastor Salomon Sanchez of Dixon; brother, Arnold Arellano and wife Mary of Dixon; and many other relatives and friends.
Services have been held. Interment was at the Apostolic Cemetery in Dixon.

VALENTINA CHAVEZ-BARBERO, 88, of Las Vegas, N.M., died Saturday. She was born in Las Vegas, N.M., on May 3, 1915, to the late Joaquin and Elena Martinez Chavez. A well-known businesswoman, she and her late husband, Eloy Barbero, ran the neighborhood business, Barbero's Grocery, for over 40 years. A lifelong Catholic, she was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Eloy Barbero; parents; brother, Brigido Chavez; sister-in-law, Dora Chavez-Vigil; sister, Deluvina Martinez and husband Matias Sr..
She is survived by two daughters, Audrey Johnson and husband Kenny, and Norma Barbero Thornton and husband Tom; seven grandchildren; one granddaughter; sister, Corrine VanHorn; and many other relatives and friends.
Rosary devotional services will be at 7 p.m. tonight at Our Lady of Sorrows Church. Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the same church with interment to follow at the family plot at the San Jose Cemetery.

EDUARD J. GUNTER, a resident of Española for the past 16 years died Sept. 2, 2003, at the Herman Hospital in Houston, Texas, following complications of surgery. He was born in Ventura Calif., to Eddie and Irene (Kirby) Gunter. He moved to Santa Fe in 1960 where he met and married Margaret (Thayer). He worked as a salesman for Gambles, Tempo, Sears Roebuck and as a car salesman for Carls Pontiac and Capital Ford before owning and operating his own car sales business.
He has been an active member of the Elks BPOE Lodge No. 460 for many years.
In addition to his parents, and his late wife Margaret (Thayer) Gunter, he was preceded in death by a sister, Genevieve; brother, Mark; brothers-in-law, Gordon Sherwood and Charlie Thayer; uncles and aunts through marriage, Celso Lopez and aunts Consuelo Lopez and Nadine Thayer.
He is survived by his only child, Angela Chavez; three granddaughters; two great grandchildren; sisters, June Sherwood of Colfax, Calif., Mary Hund and husband Donald of Roseville, Calif., and Etta Williams and husband Stanford of Nevada City, Calif.; and many other relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Berardinelli Family Funeral Service. Reception will follow at the Elks Lodge.

DONNA E. MAESTAS, 39, of Alcalde died Saturday unexpectedly. She was born on April 26, 1964.
She was preceded in death by her father, Gabriel Maestas; her brother, George Maestas; and her son, Anthony Ruiz.
She is survived by her mother, Ida Maestas; her brothers, Roger and Jeff, Walter and wife Virginia, David and wife Margie; her sisters, Peggy and husband Vince, and Elsie and husband Toby; her companion, Terry McDaniel; and many other relatives and friends.
Public visitation will be at 6:30 p.m. today in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home with a devotional service to be held at 7 p.m. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Alcalde with interment to follow at the Loma Vista Cemetery in Alcalde.

ALCADIO D. MARTINEZ, 63, of Albuquerque and formerly of Española died Saturday following a lengthy illness. He was retired after 30 years of service with General Electric. He was a member of the American Legion, a veteran of the U.S. armed forces.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Albinita Martinez; father, Pete Lopez; and uncle, Jose Martinez.
He is survived by his wife, Stella Martinez of Albuquerque; sons, Vincent Martinez and wife Mandi, Alcadio and Kelvin Martinez all of Albuquerque; four grandchildren; four brothers, Leroy Lopez and wife Clorinda of Chimayó, Deacon Jose Lopez and wife Flora of Cordova, Ernest Lopez and wife Irene of Santa Fe, and Pete Lopez of Española; sisters, Eva Purser and husband Dick of Los Alamos, Amelia Quintana and husband Lib of Española, Patsy Clark and husband Larry of White Rock and Irene Lopez of Santa Fe; and many other relatives and friends.
Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. today at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Chimayó with interment to follow at 3 p.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.
