RUTH ALBERTA MILLER RILEY, 91, of Santa Fe died September 7, 2005 after eight years of declining health.
She was born in Albuquerque to Ruth Coleman Miller and Charles Dewit Miller. After the death of her father in the Columbus, N.M., raid of March 14, 1916, she and her sister lived throughout New Mexico with various relatives. She graduated from Santa Fe High School in 1929 and attended the University of New Mexico, where she was a member of Chi Omega, until 1933. That year, she married John David Riley, of Hartford, Ky., then a student at the New Mexico School of Mines. They lived in the Panama Canal Zone, where John was a civil engineer with the Corps of Engineers until his military service required her to live with her mother in Santa Fe, where their son was born. They returned to Panama from 1946 until 1956, then moved on assignment to Duluth, Minn., then to Phoenix. Declining health forced her to be brought to Santa Fe in 1997. She had been active in the Order of the Eastern Star and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She played duplicate bridge into her late 70s. She sacrificed dearly for her son's education and loved him unconditionally.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and sister, Margaret Miller Moar ("Miggie").
She is survived by her close niece, Mrs. Margaret Moar Sapp and Odes Sapp of Logan, Utah; son, Dr. Charles Augustus Riley and daughter-in-law Elizabeth Riley.
Her remains will be buried next to her husband in Hartford, Ky., where a service will be conducted by the Order of the Eastern Star. She would prefer remembrances of her life be directed to the Hospice Center, the Alzheimer's Foundation, or Dartmouth College.
