CLOTA BATES SCHMITZ
Clota Bates Schmitz, 83, a lifelong resident of Mountainair went to be with the Lord on April 17, 2008 in Albuquerque.
Clota was born May 11, 1924, in Sweetwater, Okla., to Raymond and Martha Rice, the seventh of nine children. Clota is preceded in death by her parents, husband Denzel Bates, son Crandall Bates, one brother and four sisters. Clota is survived by her husband, Eugene Schmitz of Albuquerque; daughters, Pamela Bates Breeze of California, Aleta Bates Cooper of New Jersey; stepdaughter Genie Schmitz Monk of Mountainair; sisters, Opal Coen, Corinne Poe, and Nelda Williams. Clota was the proud grandmother of Kimberly Ohls of California; Kelly Barham of Nevada; Tammy Pelletier and Cynthia Gamble of Albuquerque; Chad Cooper of Florida; Kaylyn Bates of Edgewood; and James Monk of Grants.
She leaves behind 13 great-grandchildren: Cameron Ohls, Brooke and Mitchell Barham, Ritchie and Davey Flores, Peter and Philip King; Meeka, Kelsey, Julia, Isaac and Samuel Gamble, and Christopher Monk.
After her career with the U.S. Forest Service, she and Gene spent the winters of their retirement years as residents of Apache Junction, Ariz., before returning to Albuquerque.
A viewing was held April 20 at the Harris-Hanlon Mortuary in Mountainair. A funeral service was held April 21 at the Harris-Hanlon Mortuary in Mountainair. Interment followed at the Mountainair Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jim Breeze, Robert Ohls, Bret Barham, Leon Monk, James Monk, James Gamble and Chad Cooper. Honorary pallbearers were Reuben Garrison, John Erwin, Sam Blackshear, Glenn Goar, Kenny Shaw, Richard Spencer, Curly Hollon and Jack Greene.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent either to Zia Hospice Foundation, 4141 Montgomery Blvd. NE, Albuquerque, NM 87109, or Alzheimer’s Association, 9500 Montgomery NE, Suite 209, Albuquerque, NM 87111.

JAMES C. MORRIS
James C. Morris, 84, of Edgewood away April 21, 2008 at his home in Edgewood, with his loving family beside him.
J.C. was born Dec. 8, 1923, in Tonkawa, Okla., to James Calvin and Georgia (Scarbrough) Morris. J.C. and his family moved to New Mexico in 1931. He grew up in the Venus/Edgewood/Cedar Grove area. He graduated from Stanley High School in 1941. J.C. and Doris LaVon Moseley were married Nov. 25, 1943 in Edgewood.
During WWII, he served his country with the U.S. Navy. After the war, J.C. went to work for the Santa Fe Railroad, retiring in 1985 after 39 years. During their years in Albuquerque, J.C. and Doris raised five sons. He was a proud and devoted father. After retirement, J.C. and Doris returned to the Edgewood area. J.C. loved riding his horse, Ben, tending his cows, and visiting friends at church and the senior center. He loved giving horseback and tractor rides to all his grandchildren. He will always be remembered for his quick smile and ability to engage almost anyone in a conversation on a wide range of subjects. J.C. had an unconditional love for his family and the lord. He was a faithful member of Stanley Union Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Joe Calvin Morris; brother, George Morris; and daughter-in-law, Terri Morris. JC is survived by his wife, Doris LaVon Morris of Edgewood; sons, Gayland Morris and wife Karen of Tijeras; Michael Morris and wife Mayta of Corrales; Patrick Morris and wife Connie of Williamsburg, Kan.; Billy Frank Morris of Albuquerque; brother, Tom Morris and wife Dutch; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren.
A viewing is scheduled from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday at the Harris-Hanlon Mortuary Chapel in Moriarty. A funeral service will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the Stanley Union Church in Stanley. Pastor Richard Hyman will be officiating. Interment will follow at the Stanley Cemetery in Stanley. Pallbearers are Gayland Morris, Mike Morris, Pat Morris, Billy Morris, Ron Morris and Thomas Morris. Honorary pallbearers will be Tom & Dutch Morris, Rick Morris, Janice Garcia, Linda Fogleman, Tammie Morris and Barbara Morris. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Stanley Union Church Building Fund, Box 1, Stanley NM 87056, or the charity of your choice.

PAMALA LARA GREEN
Pamala Lara Green, born December 21, 1988, died on April 18, 2008. Beloved daughter and sister, Lara is survived by her parents and brother, Aidan, and many cousins of Albuquerque.
Lara was “Sunshine” to all who knew her. She loved flying, horse riding, and was training for the New York Marathon. Family and friends are invited to a private memorial to scatter ashes. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to Autism Speaks Foundation.

LEANDRO CHAVEZ
Leandro Chavez, 69, of Estancia went home to be with the Lord on April 27, 2008, after a long illness with his loving family beside him.
Leandro was born July 5, 1938 in Estancia to Jacobo and Melicia Chavez. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Erbie Chavez; sister Mores; son, Herman and grandson Rene. Leandro is survived by wife of 25 years, Dorothy; sons, Jake (Pelon) and wife Mary; Leo Jr.; daughters, Wanda and husband Rene; Carla; Sandra and husband Lawrence; Nancy; Renee and husband Dwayne; Darlene and Pauline and pets; numerous grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; brothers, Beltran; Jimmy; Tony and spouse; Nick Sedillo and wife Rita and numerous nieces and nephews.
At a young age along with his brothers, he had to drop out of school to work and provide for his family. His hard work and dedication paid off, he later became a successful plastering contractor and home builder. He was a strong man with old-fashioned values. He was a race car enthusiast, not only did he watch but he raced #53 at Speedway Park and Duke City Raceway where his family gathered to watch. He will always be a winner in our hearts.
He loved the peace and tranquility of living in the East Mountains. A viewing was held on April 30 at the Harris-Hanlon Mortuary Chapel in Moriarty. A rosary was recited on April 30 at the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Moriarty. A Mass will be held on Thursday, May 1, 2008, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Moriarty; Father William Young will be officiating. A Reception will follow the Mass and cremation will follow after the services. Pallbearers will be Richard Ortiz, Anthony Chavez, Michael Chavez, James Espinoza, Derrick Christian, Devin Christian, Lawrence Pacheco Jr. and Christopher Ortiz.

FREDO W. MCFALL
Fredo W. McFall, 77, of Cedar Crest, passed away on April 22, 2008 at his home.
He was born on August 18, 1930, to the late Raines Austin and Mary Allen McFall and has been a lifelong resident of the area. Fredo retired from the U.S. Navy as a Senior Chief Petty Officer and had the distinction of being assigned to the commissioning crew of America's first nuclear submarine, the U.S.S. Nautilus. He was a former Naval JROTC instructor at Highland High School and was the founder of McFall Electric.
Fredo married the former Lauretha Lee on June 8, 1950. He is preceded in death by three sisters, Aileen Rogers, Billie Mullins, and Mona Marie Reeves. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Lauretha “Lou”; a son, Gary and his wife Valerie, of Edgewood; four grandchildren, Nathan and his wife Audrey and Rachel all of Albuquerque, Jordan and Jake both of Edgewood; two sisters, Alice Calkins and Amy Buckmaster both of Oregon; two brothers, Nelson McFall of Moriarty and Norman McFall of Albuquerque.
A memorial service was held on April 26 at St. John's United Methodist Church with Rev. Clyde Stanfield and Rev. David Edwards officiating. Interment with full military honors took place in Santa Fe National Cemetery in Santa Fe on April 28th. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John's United Methodist Church Capital Improvement Fund.

HAROLD GORDON SMITH
Harold Gordon Smith died April 22, 2008 at his home in Montrose, Colo., at the age of 88.
Harold was born July 7, 1919, in Herrin, Ill., to Charles Gordon Smith and Myrtle Jane (Dassing) Smith, later Rainbolt. He spent his childhood and attended grade school in Metropolis, Ill.
Harold, initially an infantryman and then an amphibious truck driver, served his country in the United States Army from 1941-45 during World War II. Harold, who was briefly held as a prisoner of war in North Africa by the German army before escaping, received an honorable discharge in 1945 with the rank of Specialist-5 after advancing with his units through Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Italy, France, Germany and Austria.
Harold's best friend, Harry A. Frazee, got a baby sister, Velda Mae Frazee, on Feb. 1, 1928, in Metropolis, and after Harold returned home following the war, he married Velda on July 9, 1946, in Metropolis. Harry lived in McIntosh before he preceded Harold in death.
Harold and Velda soon thereafter moved to Albuquerque where he built and they lived in two homes in Albuquerque's South Valley. Harold worked for the old Armijo Bus Company before going to work for the United States Post Office, most often at the stations at Old Town and on Bridge Street. He retired from the Post Office in 1972.
Harold and Velda subsequently relocated in 1973 to Montrose, where they established their final home, and Harold worked as a carpenter for and eventually retired from the Montrose School District. Harold enjoyed rock collecting, carpentry, gardening, restoring automobiles, “pitching washers”, participating in church activities and taking long drives in the mountains.
Survivors include his wife, Velda, of the family home, and three children, Lt. Col. Harold G. Smith Jr., USMC (Ret.), the Telegraph's sports reporter, and his wife, Cathy, of Albuquerque; Bernard L. Smith of New River, Ariz.; and Rosalie J. (Smith) Daigle and her husband, Dan, of Denver. His grandchildren include H. Gordon Smith III and his wife, Stephanie, of Dewey, Okla.; Bryan L. Smith of Montrose, Colo.; and Elizabeth M. (Smith) Wenrich and her husband, Brian, of Albuquerque. Great grandchildren include Nella C. Smith of Dewey, Okla., and two on the way.
Harold also is survived by his nephew, Ron E. Smith, and his wife, Margie, of Metropolis, Ill., and a stepsister, Sue Murray of Dixon, Ill.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents and three siblings, Lewis V. Smith, Vita K. (Smith) Giffin and Edith H. (Smith) Booth. Others preceding him included his half brother, Edward Rainbolt, as well as three stepbrothers, two stepsisters and a nephew, George L. Emery.
Harold was buried at Grand View Cemetery in Montrose, Colo., on April 25. In lieu of flowers, request donations be sent to Rosemont Baptist Church, 1598 E. Niagara Rd., Montrose, Colo., 81401.

CONSUELO MICHELLE QUINTANA
Consuelo Michelle Quintana, 30, of Mountainair passed away May 3, 2008.
Consuelo was born on October 19, 1977, in Albuquerque to Jose Maria Padilla and Ramona Ester Quintana. She was devoted, loving and caring mother. Consuelo lived her life for her children. She gave joy to the hearts of her family and friends. Consuelo was never selfish and always willing to give what little she had. She will be missed and always in our hearts. She was preceded in death by her father, Jose Maria Padilla and aunt Dianna Rose Padilla.
Consuelo is survived by her mother Ramona E. Quintana; husband, Predro Zamora of Mountainair; sons, Albert Chavez of Mountainair, Francisco Zamora of Mountainair; stepson, Julian Zamora of Mountainair; daughters, Alieza Chavez of Mountainair, Samantha Zamora of Mountainair, Vanessa Zamora of Mountainair; stepdaughter, Naomi Zamora of Mountainair; brothers, Joseph Quintana and wife Terra of Manzano; Gualterio Quintana and wife Stella of Albuquerque; grandmother, Prescilla Quintana; grandfather, Cecilio Quintana and wife Judy; great grandmother, Lola Romero; aunt and uncle Suzie and Dewey Garcia and several other aunts and uncles on the Padilla and Quintana side and numerous nieces and nephews. A Rosary was held on May 6 at St. Alice Catholic Church in Mountainair. A Mass was held on May 7 at St. Alice Catholic Church in Mountainair with Father Ron Stone officiating. Interment followed at the Manzano Cemetery in Manzano. Pallbearers were Joseph Quintana, Gualterio Quintana, Manuel Romero, Angela Romero, Julian Zamora and Celso Garcia. Honorary Pallbearers were Dewey Garcia and Ralph Zamora.
