RICHARD LEWIS HAWKINS, 46, died Thursday in Taos. He was born May 30, 1957, in Glendale, Calif. After college he moved to Salida, Colo. He was a skilled builder of beautiful homes, incredible artist and also a successful and excellent outfitter. He lived on the land he holds so dear to his heart, Steele Canyon in the Sangre de Cristos of southern Colorado.
He was a loving son to his mother, Andrea Carpenter and his father, Joseph Carpenter; his son, Colter Grey Hawkins; a devoted husband to Jeni; a long and best friend to his sister, Lizabeth and brother, Diego; stepsister, Dawn Fykes and husband Pat; older brother, Chuck Hawkins and his family; and many other relatives and friends.
Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Presbyterian Church in Salida, Colo., and at noon Sunday on Rick's Mountain. Flowers may be sent to Joseph and Andrea Carpenter, 12755 Riverview Drive, Salida, CO 81201.

JEAN MADISON MAESTAS, 61, of Phoenix died Oct. 4 following a short illness.
She was preceded in death by her husband, LeRoy Maestas of Chamita who passed away while serving our country in the U.S. Air Force.
She is survived by her daughter, Margaret and husband Martin Martinez and family of Phoenix; son, Mark Maestas and wife Hitomi of Woodland Hills, Calif.; mother-in-law, Ramoncita M. Montoya of Chamita; and many other relatives.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.

YVONNE C. MARTINEZ, 37, of Guachupangue died Saturday unexpectedly.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny Ray Martinez; one sister, Beverly Ann Archuleta-Mendoza; father of her son, Medardo Chavez Jr.; grandfathers, Fidel Sanchez and Jose Archuleta; aunts, Louisa Martinez and Barbara Salazar; first cousin, Donald Nano Martinez; and uncle, Gilbert Salazar.
She is survived by her son, Gabriel M. Archuleta of Española; parents, Cippie and Mary Martha Archuleta of Hernandez; sister, Pamela Archuleta and husband Jerry Lujan of La Mesilla; and many other relatives and friends.
Public visitation will be at 5 p.m. Thursday in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home with a wake service to be recited at 7 p.m. Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the La Iglesia de Santa Cruz de la Cañada with interment to follow at the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery.

DONILIA DOMITILIA "ELLA" PADILLA, 83, died Saturday with all her family by her bedside. She was born April 30, 1920, in Cerrillos to Salomon Ribera and his wife Jesusita.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Antonio Padilla; nephew Enrique Rivera whom she helped raise; brothers, Margarito, Julian, and Nick Rivera; sisters, Candelaria, Koroneos, Aneda Rivera, and Lucia Tzeranis.
She is survived by her daughter, Elena Cole and husband Randy of Arroyo Seco; son, Tony Padilla and wife Ruth of Denver; brother, Mariano "Monty" Rivera of Albuquerque; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. today at McGee Memorial Chapel with a rosary following at 7 p.m. Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Santa Maria de la Paz Catholic Community with burial following at Santa Fe National Cemetery.

ELISIA FERNANDEZ, 80, of Española, died Monday following a sudden illness.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Emiliano Fernandez; parents, Naciso and Natividad Aragon; granddaughter, Rochelle Valdez; and grandson, Jerry Bustos. She is survived by her children, Polly Valdez and husband Vidal of Española, Angie Sullivan of Las Vegas, N.M., Ernie Fernandez and Ernie Emiliano Fernandez both of Española; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. JENNIFER EVE MARTINEZ-CHAVEZ, 19, of Chimayó, died Monday following injuries sustained in an automobile accident. She was a graduate of Living Heritage Academy in Texas. At the time of her death, she was an administrative assistant for planning and zoning for Rio Arriba County. She anticipated going to college to major in criminal justice. She was preceded in death by her father, Randall Scott Chavez. She is survived by her mother, Pauline Martinez of Chimayó; brothers, Lukas Ledoux of Chimayó and Randall Scott Chavez Jr. of Lyden; maternal grandparents, Tommy Martinez of Chimayó and Evelyn Martinez of Española; paternal grandparents, Julian and Lupita Chavez of Los Luceros; and many other relatives and friends. Cremation has taken place. A rosary will be recited at 7:30 tonight at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Chimayó. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Chimayó with burial to follow at La Villita Cemetery. DeVargas Funeral Home of the Española Valley.

ROSEMARY SALAZAR, 51, of Chamita for the last 22 years and originally of El Rito, died Monday from injuries she received in an automobile accident. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Salazar; father, Julian Ortega; and mother-in-law, Rafaelita Salazar. She is survived by her three children, Jeremiah, Julianna, and Anna Liza all of the home in Chamita; her mother, Cora Ortega of El Rito; three goddaughters, Tammy Duran, Gina Trujillo and Antoinette Lopez; and many other relatives and friends. Cremation has taken place. A rosary will be recited at 7 tonight at St. John the Baptist Church in San Juan Pueblo. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. John the Baptist Church in San Juan Pueblo. Interment will follow at the San Pedro Cemetery in Chamita. Salazar Family of Block-Salazar Mortuary.

PAUL M. SIMMONS died Tuesday. He was born on Aug. 10, 1908, in Missouri. In 1921, when he was a young boy, he moved with his family from Missouri to New Mexico because of health reasons. He was a resident of Santa Fe for many years and a rancher and farmer in the Estancia Valley. He was very active in his community and served on the Santa Fe County Committee and the state Committee of the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service for more than 30 years. He also served on the Central New Mexico Electric Co-op Board for many years and was instrumental in bringing electricity to the Estancia Valley. He was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 50 years, Sara Simmons; parents, Clyde and Pearl Simmons; a sister, Gladys; and two brothers, Wayne and Gerald Simmons. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Jessie Simmons; and nieces and nephews, Simmons, Foster and Huddleston. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Berardinelli Family Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Berardinelli Family Chapel. Burial will follow at Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Berardinelli Family Funeral Service.

PETER R. SMITH, 80, died Wednesday following a brief illness. He was born Aug. 1, 1923, in London, England. During World War II, he served with the Royal Air Force in England. He trained as a pilot in the United States, and returned to live in the United States after the war. He married Harriett Gaskil on Oct. 13, 1951. For 30 years, while residing in La Puebla, he was an avid organic gardener and beekeeper. He also raised chickens, turkeys, beef and pork. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gladys Smith and Frederick Smith; brother, Ian Smith and his granddaughter, Elizabeth McKenna. He is survived by his wife, Harriett Smith of La Puebla; three sons, Eric and Randy Smith of Santa Fe, and Brian Rosenthal of Phoenix, Ariz.; three daughters, Yvonne Smith of La Puebla, Laurie Smith-Garner of Placitas, and Gwen LeFebre of Anchorage, Alaska; two brothers, Eric Smith of Woodbridge, England and Brian Smith of Loveland, Colo.; three sisters, Rita Elliott of Albuquerque, Moira Newterman of Sacramento, Calif., and Yvonne Crochet of Farmington; 15 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Block-Salazar Mortuary. A covered dish reception will following at the American Legion. Block-Salazar Mortuary.
