John Young
John V. Young, 90, died Aug. l5, 1999, in Sonoma, Calif., after a long illness.
He was born in Fruitvale (now East Oakland) on Jan. 25, l909, and spent most of his childhood in nearby Alameda. The family moved to a small ranch near Los Gatos in 1924, where he completed high school. After a short stint at San Jose State Teacher's College, he entered "the newspaper game," working as a reporter/photographer and eventually editor at several greater Bay Area newspapers from Pittsburg to Stockton to San Jose, ending up as city editor at the San Jose Mercury-Herald. He was a founding member of the Loma Prieta chapter of the Sierra Club and active in the fledgling Newspaper Writers Guild.
One of his best photojournalistic series, first published during the l930s, was published in book form in l979 as "Ghost Towns of the Santa Cruz Mountains." A few years later, "Hot Type and Pony Wire," recounting his early newspaper days, was published
Shortly after World War II began, he took a job as an electrical draftsman with Eitel-McCullough, a radar tube manufacturer in San Bruno. Word of his insights into employee problems reached management, and he was summarily hired as personnel director. From there, he was chosen to help with personnel problems at the Manhattan Project site in Los Alamos at the end of the war. When that assignment evolved into a permanent job as personnel director of the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory, his family moved to Los Alamos in Dec. l945. He and his wife, Emma Lou, lived in Los Alamos for the next 50 years.
He never gave up his interest in photography and journalism. As he and his family traveled and camped around the Southwest, he began to publish travel articles with photographs Ñ in the New York Times travel section, and in Sunset, Arizona Highways, and similar magazines. He retired early from the Los Alamos lab so he could devote full time to this creative endeavor. Eventually he authored a total of five published books, including "The State Parks of New Mexico" (1984), "The State Parks of Arizona" (l986) and "The State Parks of Utah" (1989), and a very popular pamphlet: "Kokopelli: Casanova of the Cliff Dwellers" (1991). He continued writing as long as his health allowed, including a delightful series "My Life and What of It?" which he shared with his family and friends.
John Young will be remembered for his astute reflections on the history, people, landscapes and special qualities of places throughout the Southwest and California. He is remembered by those close to him for his loving, intelligent, playful and creative nature.
He is survived by his wife, Emma Lou Young; their daughters Judy Smith and Molly Brown; grandchildren Jenene Portune, Lisa Varra, Greg Brown and Cassidy Brown; and great-grandchildren Sean Portune and Megan Varra.
No services are planned. Memorial gifts may be made to Hospice of Marin, in Corte Madera, Calif.
