Loretta Jane Sandenaw
Loretta Jane Sandenaw, 90, former resident of Los Alamos, died Oct. 26, 2004.
She is survived by her sons; Richard L. Sandenaw and Tom A. Sandenaw, Jr., daughter Carole Blessinger; and a sister Doris Harris.
A memorial service was held today in El Paso, Texas.
Herbert (Bert) Hanna Helmick
Herbert (Bert) Hanna Helmick, 71, died Dec. 5, 2004.
He was an internationally acclaimed technical advisor who worked 38 years at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, where he was employed as a nuclear physicist and computer instrumentation expert.
During his tenure at Los Alamos, he managed multiple technologically advanced research programs for the DOE, NTC and NASA, was widely published, and held several patents.
He was appointed US Instrumentation Expert to the International Atomic Energy Agency and was also a member of the US Nuclear Emergency Search Team (NEST).
In addition, his work included working at the French Atomic Energy Commission and consulting to NIMA and DOE on nuclear proliferation issues.
Helmick was a member of IEEE, ASIS, ANS, Airplane Owners Association, held a private pilot's license, was a member of the Civil Air Patrol, and held an Amateur Extra Radio License.
Helmick loved flying airplanes, white water rafting, amateur radio, woodworking, inventing electronic gadgets, and helping high school students with science projects.
He was an active member of Kiwanis and Explorer Post 20 and was well known and loved for his sense of humor and wit.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret L. Helmick of Hedgesville, W.V.; son, Paul Helmick and wife Janet of Tijeras; daughter Catherine Helmick Shenk and husband Norman of Boulder; stepdaughters, Margaret Helen Novak and husband Jeff of Chantilly, Va., and Marilyn Brooks LePage and husband Brian of Annadale, Va.; and sister Ruth Lier and husband Doug of Los Alamos.
Funeral services will be held at Hedgesville Presbyterian Church, Dec. 18.
A memorial service will be held in Los Alamos, with the date to be announced.

Barbara (Othick) Wells
Barbara (Othick) Wells, 71; twins, Garrett Bradley Moots and Megan Brooke Moots, 2; and little sister, Mallory Ryan Moots, 1, all of Macon, Mo. died Dec. 4, 2004, in Macon.
Wells was born Nov. 21, 1933, in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of George Arthur and Jennie Mae Walruth Othick.
She married Don M. Wells in October 1951.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church and enjoyed sports and baking cookies for children.
Wells was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two daughters, Tammy and Shawn.
Wells is survived by five sons, Donnie Wells and wife Connie of Shelbina, Mo., Steve Wells and wife Lisa of Memphis, Tenn., Jon Wells and Reta Stevens of Macon, Jeff Wells and wife Venai of Macon, Mo, Eric Wells and wife Shannon of Kansas City, Mo.; four daughters, AdriAnne Kothe and husband Doug of Los Alamos, Janet Zust and husband Scott of Atlanta, Shannon Fry and husband Shaon of Columbia, Mo., Beth Moots and husband Eric of Macon.
She is also survived by several grandchildren, two brothers, Ronnie Othick and wife Millie of Tucson and Terry Othick and wife Sissy of Albuquerque, and one sister Judy Othick of Casa Grande, Ariz.
Garrett and Megan were born Jan. 9, 2002, and Mallory was born Oct. 7, 2003, in Columbia, Mo., the children of Eric Bradley and Beth Cecile Wells Moots.
They were preceded in death by their maternal grandparents and paternal grandfather, Ernest Marvin Moots, and two aunts, Tammy and Shawn.
They are survived by their parents, paternal grandmother, Julie Moots of Jefferson City, Mo., and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be Dec. 8, at the Crossroads Christian Church in Macon.
Memorials may be directed to the Macon High School Athletic Department or the American Cancer Society.
Iola A. (Ward) Williams
Iola A. (Ward) Williams, 85, a former resident of Los Alamos, died Nov. 28, 2004 in Mesa, Ariz.
She was born at her grandmother's farmhouse in Fountain County, Ind., Dec. 29, 1918.
She graduated from Perrysville High School in 1936 and from Utterback Business College in 1937.
While working in Chicago for the Firestone Co., she met A. Hayden "Eddie" Williams and they were married in 1941.
They moved to Los Alamos in 1949, where she was a homemaker, providing a wonderful and secure atmosphere for her family.
When the children were older, Williams worked part-time as the bookkeeper for Metzger Stores.
She was in leadership in Beta Sigma Phi, and enjoyed researching family genealogy, and became an active member of DAR and Colonial Dames.
She was also an accomplished watercolor artist and a gifted seamstress.
In 1987, the family retired to Arizona. Williams was a faithful member of Cornerstone Church in Mesa.
She was preceded in death by her husband.
She is survived by her son, Thomas Ward Williams and his wife Rachel of Estes Park, Colo.; daughter, Cheryl Lee Gross and husband Michael of Gilbert, Arizona; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial fund has been established in care of Cornerstone Church, 4248 E. Broadway Road, Mesa, Ariz., 85206.
