Julia V. Samora
Visitation for Julia V. Samora, 69, of Carrizozo were held on Thursday, March 10, at Santa Rita’s Catholic Church in Carrizozo. The funeral Mass will be Friday, March 11, at 10 a.m. with burial to follow at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Cemetery with Rev. Dave Bergs officiating. Mrs. Samora died Monday, March 7, in Albuquerque.
She was born September 15, 1935, in Carrizozo to Amata and Joe Vega Sr. and has lived in Carrizozo all of her life. She worked in the Lincoln County Tax Assessors office most of her life, retiring in 1990. She attended Santa Rita’s Catholic Church. She married Rito M. Samora on November 26, 1955, in Carrizozo.
Surviving family members include her husband, Rito of Carrizozo; her children, Rito Samora Jr., Paul Samora, Tommy Samora, Gaby Samora, Delores Renney and Patrick Samora all of Carrizozo; a brother, Edward Vega of Carrizozo; a sister, Mary McKinley of Las Cruces; 11 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
Arrangements are under the direction of LaGrone Funeral Chapel of Ruidoso.

Arlene Fay Taylor
A memorial service for Arlene Fay Taylor, 76, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 5, at La Grone Funeral Home in Ruidoso, with Alan Taylor officiating. Ms. Taylor died March 2, 2005, in Ruidoso after a long illness.
She was born on Nov. 15, 1928, in Lamesa, Texas. She married Warren D. Taylor on Oct. 13, 1948, in Alpine, Texas, and their marriage spanned some 25 years until her husband preceded her in death on Feb. 3, 1974.
Surviving family includes two sons, Gary Taylor and wife Jodi of Capitan, and Alan Taylor and wife Dee Ann of Rio Rancho, N.M.; two brothers, C.R. Cook of Bakersfield, Calif., and Roy Cook of New Jersey; nieces Gay Yates of Mayhill. Sherry Polk of Hope, N.M., and Bonnie Glenn of Ruidoso Downs, plus numerous additional nieces and nephews.
The family suggests memorials be made to the Lincoln County Animal Shelter.
Arrangements are under the direction of LaGrone Funeral Home.

Roy Edward Payton
This obituary is being reprinted to correct an error in the service date.
A memorial service for Roy Edward Payton, 47, of Carlsbad is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, at the Hale Cemetery in Ruidoso Downs.
Mr. Payton died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Albuquerque.
He was born Oct. 22, 1956, in Alamogordo to Ed and Thelma Payton.
Survivors include his father, Edward; and stepmother Bea of Capitan; a sister, Colline Snell, and her husband, Bill, of League City, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Thelma, and sister, Margaret Ann Payton.

Michael James Gomez
A wake service for Michael James Gomez, 51, of Santa Fe, was held last Wednesday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with Dolores Gomez officiating. A mass of Christian burial was offered Thursday, with Father Bryant Hausfeld as celebrant, and burial followed at Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery.
Mr. Gomez died Oct. 9, 2004, at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Santa Fe.
He was born April 20, 1953, in Alamogordo, the son of Vicente S. and Matilde Valdez Gomez.
Mr. Gomez worked as a budget analyst for the Department of Health for the State of New Mexico. He was a member of the St. Francis Cathedral Catholic Church in Santa Fe, the Mayordomo, and was a member of the L. Gallegos Ditch Association.
Survivors include brothers V. Ruben Gomez, and his wife, Mary Lou, of Alamogordo, and Adolfo Gomez of Glencoe; a sister, Louella Arenas, of Alamogordo; nephews Ben Arenas and Ruben J. Gomez of Albuquerque and Tom Arenas, and his wife Marie, of Las Cruces; a niece, Jennifer R. Gomez, of Albuquerque; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Services were under the direction of Sears Alamogordo Funeral Home.

Mary Ellen Whiteley
Graveside services for Mary Ellen Bethany Whiteley, 72, of Ruidoso, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Forest Lawn Cemetery, with Bobbie Dobbs officiating.
Mrs. Whiteley died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004, at Lincoln County Medical Center.
She was born in El Paso on Oct. 24, 1931.
She spent her youth at the Southwestern Children’s Home. For a few years after that she called Ruidoso home, and has resided at the Ruidoso Care Center since moving here from Sacramento, Calif., in July 1999.
Survivors include a daughter, Janet N. Ellis, and her husband, Jay, of Ruidoso; a granddaughter, Treasa Hicks, and her husband, Buck, of Greenville, Texas; a great-granddaughter, Brittany Barker, of Emory, Texas; a brother, Jim Bethany, and his wife, Edna, of New Hampton, Iowa; a niece; a nephew; and many great-nieces and -nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents William E. and Ethel Bethany; and a brother, William.
Arrangements are under the direction of LaGrone Funeral Chapel of Ruidoso.

Betty Peterson
A memorial service for Betty Peterson, 79, a part-time Ruidoso resident, will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Community United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Peterson died Oct. 15, 2004, in Odessa, Texas, after a lengthy illness.
She was born Betty Girvin on April 24, 1925. She grew up in Dayton, Ohio, and moved to the Southwest as an adult.
She was active in Girl Scouting as a troop leader and camp counselor. She later became a successful district manager for Avon Products. She loved the Ruidoso area, enjoying horse racing and fishing.
Survivors include a sister, Eleanor Beck, of Ithaca, N.Y.; a son, William G. Peterson, of Austin, Texas; a daughter, Beverly Peterson, of Alto; and grandchildren Christina and Jason Humphries, Lindy Crapps and Lacy Peterson.

Rudy Keith Lee
Burial for Rudy Keith Lee, 54, of Alto, was at Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens in Clovis on Oct. 18.
Mr. Lee died Oct. 14 in a motorcycle accident outside Ruidoso.
He was born on March 8, 1950, in Clovis, to Cleovis Lee and Norma Lockmiller.
He worked in construction in New Mexico before moving to Juneau, Alaska, where he lived for 22 years. In Juneau he worked as the "Mac Tool Man,” and as a commercial fisherman. He was later employed aboard Alaska Marine Highway vessels as a steward and then as ordinary seaman. He also served as the ship’s delegate for the Inland Boatman’s Union of the Pacific. He retired from the M/V Kennicott in 2002.
His passion was his motorcycle.
Survivors include a son, Alan Lee, of Roswell; his mother, Norma Townsend, of Clovis; his stepfather, Richard Townsend, of Clovis; a sister, Janice Wilson, and her husband, Jerry, of Ruidoso; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father and his grandparents.

Dorothy McCabe Mengel
Cremation services for Dorothy Jane “Dee” McCabe Mengel, 74, were performed by Memory Gardens Direct Disposition of Carlsbad.
Mrs. Mengel died Oct. 12 at Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center in Alamogordo.
She was born Sept. 6, 1930, in Marfa, Texas, to Allen Marshall McCabe and Dorothy Mitchell McCabe. She lived in El Paso for 45 years, then Albuquerque and Ruidoso, to where she moved in 2002.
She attended Marfa Public Schools, graduated from The Hockaday School in Dallas and graduated from Texas Western College of Mines with a bachelor of arts degree.
She married George Herndon Mengel in El Paso.
Survivors include children Gaye Catherine Basom and her husband, Bob, of Albuquerque, Guy Marshall Mengel and his wife, Linda, of Bealton, Va., Georganne Quier and her husband, Dan, of Chandler, Ariz., Mark McCabe Mengel and his wife, Tracy, of Virginia Beach, Va., and Mary Talsma of Ruidoso; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her husband; and a sister, Mary Catherine Cartwright, of Mesa, Ariz.

Lore Trujillo-Miller
A memorial service for Lore Trujillo-Miller, 72, of Capitan, will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, at Christ Community Fellowship, with Pastor Ed Vinson officiating and music by Becky Koreny.
Mrs. Trujillo-Miller died Friday, Sept. 17, 2004.
She was born May 17, 1932, in Encinoso, the youngest of 11 children to Alejandro and Emilia Trujillo.
She married Manuel Miller Jr. of Capitan Sept. 9, 1960. She lived in Capitan all her life and was known for always having food to feed anyone that was hungry, even strangers.
Survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth (Liz) Miller-Montoya; a son-in-law, Joseph Montoya; grandchildren Gerald Montoya and Emilia Montoya; and a brother, Salomon Trujillo. She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers; five sisters; and her husband.
Arrangements are under the direction of LaGrone Funeral Chapel of Ruidoso.

Jay O. Dossey
No services are scheduled for Jay O. Dossey, 56, of Alamogordo.
Mr. Dossey died Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, in Alamogordo.
He was born July 10, 1948, in Tyler, Texas. He was a resident of Alamogordo for 21 years.
He was retired from the U.S. Marine Corps and was a Vietnam veteran who received three Purple Hearts.
Survivors include daughters Tanya Dossey of Wakefield, Mass., Sanya Dossey, Carol Dossey and Katrina Dossey, of Alamogordo, and Patricia Dossey of Ruidoso; sons Jay Dossey Jr. and John Dossey, of Alamogordo; and grandchildren Reanna Lussier of Wakefield, and Dante Turner, Tre Turner, Kaleb Clancy, A’leia West, Ariyana Dossey, Alexis Swapp and Hailey Swapp, of Alamogordo.
Arrangements are under the direction of Hamilton-O’Dell Funeral Home.

Sibyl Erwin Riddle
Funeral services for Sibyl Erwin Riddle, 96, of Ruidoso, will be 10 a.m. today, Sept. 24, in the First Baptist Church in Ruidoso, with burial to follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery and the Rev. Tim Gilliland officiating.
Mrs. Riddle died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004, in Ruidoso.
She was born May 6, 1908 in Eastland, Texas. She moved to Ruidoso in 1964 from Abilene, Texas.
She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church.
She married Jay Riddle in April of 1925, and he preceded her in death on June 13, 2003.
Survivors include a son, Don Riddle, of Abilene, Texas; a daughter, Barbara Dean, of Ruidoso; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are under the direction of LaGrone Funeral Chapel of Ruidoso.
