Mr. Demosten Mascarenas passed away Monday, March 17, 2002. He was a member of the Laborers Local Union #16 and the Southwest Fire Fighters for the Carson National Forrest. Funeral services for Mr. Mascarenas are pending. Burial will take place at the Mascarenas family cemetery in Penasco, NM. Funeral services are in the care of Garcia Mortuary, 717 Stover Ave. S.W. 243-5222

Kenneth E. Nelson a 20 year resident of Rio Rancho, NM passed away on March 21, 2002. Ken was born on August 19, 1916 to Earnest E. and Esther Johnson Nelson in Bay City, MI. He attended Bay City Central High School and Bay City Jr. College earning an associate of Science Degree. He then married Marian Guillemette on July 13, 1940 in Bay City, MI. In 1947, they moved to Midland, MI where they continued to raise his family. Prior to his retirement he was a Metallurgical Engineer for Dow Chemical Co. for over 40 years. During his 40 years with Dow, he was recognized with many awards and merits, including the AFS Award of Scientific Merit and was also a listed inventor of four patents for Dow Chemical Co. Ken is an Honorary Life Member of the Knights of Columbus and is a member of the Eugene Teatum Council #6696 in Rio Rancho and a 4th Degree member of Pope John Paul 1st Assembly in Rio Rancho. He is a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Church and the BPO Elks Lodge #2500. Ken was an avid golfer and enjoyed experiencing two holes-in-one in his retirement years. He belonged to the Rio Rancho Golf and Country Club and the Midland Country Club in Midland, MI. He enjoyed cruising and traveling and had visited many places throughout the world. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. Ken was preceded in death by his brother, Howard. He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Marian of Rio Rancho, NM; his children, Kristin Jette and husband, Ray of Santa Fe, NM, Mark Nelson and wife, Elena of Grover City, CA, Gary Nelson of Lansing, MI, James Nelson and wife, Carole of Southport, NC; his brother, Earl Nelson and wife, Marie of High Point, NC; sister-in-law, Bette Nelson of St. Charles, IL; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A Visitation will be held on Monday, March 26, 2002 at 6:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Rio Rancho Funeral Home. The Knights of Columbus Services will be held at 6:30 p.m. with the Rosary being recited at 7:00 p.m. Cremation will take place and a Funeral Mass will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Ken's name to Sandia Hospice Memorial Foundation, 4725 Indian School Rd. NE, Suite 100, Albuquerque, NM 87110. Services are under the care of Rio Rancho Funeral Home, 2400 Southern Blvd., Rio Rancho, NM (505) 891-9192.

Frank O'Hara, 65, a resident of Albuquerque since 1971 died on Saturday, December 22, 2001 after a long illness. Frank was born in Wishaw, Lanarkshire, Scotland on October 7, 1936 to Albert and Roseana Sweeney O'Hara, both of whom have preceded him in death. He was also predeceased by his brothers Joseph, John and David O'Hara and his sisters, Mary McFarlane and Rita Friel, his 'American Dad' Louis Felder, and his very good friends, Edmundo Delgado and Richard Salazar. He is survived by his brother, Albert O'Hara; sisters, Rose O'Hara (Sister Mary St. Magnus) and Helen Cooper, all of Glasgow, Scotland. Frank is also survived by his 'American Family,' who sponsored him when he came to the United States, his Mom, Shilah K. Felder; sister, Shilah F. Radcliffe; and brother, Danny Felder, all of Merritt Island, Florida. Other survivors include include his dear friends, Elena and Edward Sedillo, Gil Apodaca, Connie Salazar, James and Becky Bradshaw, Lee Ann Ortiz and Merris Hall, all of Albuquerque. Frank will be missed by many other friends in Albuquerque, Santa Fe and places as far flung as Arizona, California, Wisconsin and Florida. After completing secondary school in Lanarkshire, Scotland, Frank served in the British Army from June 2, 1955 to May 29, 1957, attaining the rank of Corporal. While in the British Army Frank was stationed at NATO Headquarters in Fontainebleau, France where he became acquainted with a US Army Officer, Louis Felder, and his wife, Shilah. Several years later they sponsored him to immigrate to the United States. Frank came to the United States on October 27, 1961. He joined the US Air Force on August 27, 1962 and completed his first enlistment on August 26, 1966. During his first enlistment Frank got to know New Mexico. He was stationed at Walker AFB, Roswell and often made trips to Santa Fe to visit Ed Delgado and his family . Ed was a friend Frank had made while both lived near Washington, D.C. Later on Frank was stationed at Elmendorf AFB, Alaska where he became a naturalized US citizen on February 18, 1966. During Frank's second enlistment he served in Viet Nam from August 1966 to October, 1968. After Viet Nam, Frank served at several duty stations in the US until his enlistment ended on November 5, 1970. Frank was honorably discharged as a Sergeant. After his military service Frank entered the University of New Mexico, earning his BA in political Science, with a History minor, in the spring of 1977. In 1978 Frank began work at the Albuquerque field office of the New Mexico Motor Vehicle Department. During his tenure at MVD Frank started a Saint Patrick's Day tradition of serving corned beef and cabbage dinner, which he cooked at home, to his co-workers. Frank retired from MVD at the end of 1997 after 20 years of dedicated service. During retirement Frank was able to travel more. In June, 2000, he visited Ireland where he was able to talk face-to-face with his brother Albert for the first time in nearly 40 years. In July 2001, returned to Scotland to attend family celebrations. Frank also made many trips to Florida to visit the Felders and to attend Major League Baseball spring training. He was a Yankee fan but he enjoyed many seasons of watching the Albuquerque Dukes at the Sports Stadium with the 'first base crowd.' He especially relished kibitzing with the late Pat McKernan and his son, young Pat. Frank was well-read and was very knowledgeable about military and political history and ancient Egypt. Frank's other interests included competitive tomato growing, music and art and argumentation. Frank mentioned on many occasions that he 'had been trained by the Jesuits.' On many a Friday afternoon he could be found at Jack's Lounge holding court, where some referred to him as 'Don Frankie.' Frank was also a Life Member of American Legion Post 99 and VFW Post 401 of Albuquerque. Frank has been cremated. His ashes will be interred at the Santa Fe National cemetery on Friday, April 26, 2002. On Saturday, April 27, 2002 we will celebrate Frank's life at American Legion Post 99 in Albuquerque. Exact times for the interment and celebration will be announced in the obituary section of the paper a week prior to their occurrence.

John J. Peterson, a resident of Albuquerque since 1983, passed away on March 18, 2002 after a short illness. He was 84. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor; and one son, Mark. He is survived by three sons, John F. and wife, Peggy of Sterling, CO, Thomas M. and wife, Marjorie, and Timothy P. all of Albuquerque; four grandchildren, John, Mark, Elizabeth and Eric; and one sister, Doreen Given of Nevada, IA. Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 24, Cross of Hope Lutheran Church, Taylor Ranch. Private interment Santa Fe National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Manzano del Sol Health Care Center or to Cross of Hope. The family wishes to thank the staff at Manzano del Sol for their loving care.

Rachel Amoriah, age 16, passed away March 21, 2002. She is survived by her parents; Chris and Lisa Chavez, and her brothers and sisters; Jacob Rogers, Chastina Rogers, Shaya Rogers and David Rogers. She is also survived by her maternal grandmother; Norma Burch from Arizona, and her paternal grandparents; Mike and Rose Chavez of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Funeral services will be held Monday, March 25, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. in The Chapel of Sandia, Sandia Funeral Care, 7601 Wyoming Blvd, NE, Albuquerque with Pastor Larry E. Allen officiating. Pallbearers will be; Lucas Shepardson, James Michael Sena, Logan N. Shepardson, Levi Shepardson, Michael Chavez, Steve Chavez, Chris Salguero and Jay Schwartz. Interment will follow at Vista Verde Memorial Park. Arrangements by Sandia Funeral Care, 7601 Wyoming Blvd NE, 821-0010.

Betty Yvonne 'Bonne' Medley Smith. Bonne Smith, 78 passed away 14 March 2002 in Arlington, TX. She was born 17 November 1923 in San Pedro, CA to Bettie G. Nordmeyer and Irma Jack Medley. She was raised in Mountainair, NM by her grandmother, Nellie Mae Nordmeyer. A 1941 graduate of Albuquerque High School, she moved her family to the Phoenix, AZ area in 1957. She retired in 1985 and moved to NH to live with her oldest grandson in 1993. She moved again in 1995 to Arlington, TX to be near her son. She fell in her home on 6 December 2001 and never recovered. Bonne was a lifelong member of the Baptist Church and will be remembered for her expert sewing and handicrafts. Bonne is survived by her son, Mike E. Smith and wife, Pat of Arlington, TX; and a daughter, Penny Grayson Giacoletti and husband, John of Hurley, NM; grandchildren, Sunshine and Tarn Sanger, Kaytlynn and Andrew, Tina Berry, Christiana, Caleb and Caedom, Steve and Lori Rayner, Amber, Jessie and Johanna, all of Phoenix, AZ; Gary Glenn Gray, El Paso, TX and daughter, Tia Marie Russell, Bartlett, TN, James L. and David A. Giacoletti, both of Ft. Worth, TX. As Bonne wished, she has been cremated and her ashes will be buried with her maternal grandmother in Mountainair, NM by her loving family and friends.

Joseph Suknot, Jr., 85, passed away Sunday, March 17, 2002 after an extended illness. He was born in Sioux City, Iowa in 1917 and moved to Albuquerque in 1955 to work as a Drafting Supervisor for Sandia Laboratories where he was employed for 26 years until his retirement in 1981. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Ruby K. Suknot. He is survived by Mary Kathleen Suknot of Los Angeles; her sons, Carl Jackson of Los Angeles and Eric Crawford of Phoenix; Susan Suknot of Peralta; Daniel Suknot, wife, Donna Vesel and daughter, Erin Suknot all of Albuquerque; Anita Latimer of Waterville, WA and husband, Ron; Lynn Suknot of Albuquerque; Shirley Suknot of Seattle, WA; Ron Suknot, son, Ronnie Suknot and daughter, Kari Suknot all of Albuquerque. Cremation has taken place and Memorial Services will be held Monday, March 25 at 3:00 p.m. at Aspen Funeral Alternatives Chapel, 1935 Juan Tabo NE. Friends are invited to the family home after the Memorial Service at 632 Florida SE to share their memories of 'Joe. Mary Virginia Tanty, 99, went home to be with the Lord on March 15, 2002. She was born in Chicago, IL, January 21, 1903 to Walter and Marie Weller. She is survived by her daughter, Marie Louise Wilson and her husband, Robert of Tijeras; sisters, Alice Halsted and Betty Tomasic of Merrillville, IN; granddaughters, Catherine Lindsay of Edgewood, NM, Natalie Thompson and her husband, Charles of Albuquerque; great-granddaughters, Rachel and Hannah Thompson; many nephews and nieces. In 1926, Ms. Tanty became one of the original 16 American Rockets, now known as the Radio City Music Hall Rockettes dance troupe. She had a ten year dance career on Broadway and Vaudeville and worked with top performers such as Fanny Brice, George Burns and Gracie Allen. In 1945, she made a move clear across the country to California. She was employed by Sears Roebuck Department stores from 1948 to 1966. After her retirement she spent a lot of time with her daughter and granddaughters, deciding in 1977 to move to Albuquerque to be closer to them. Since then, she has taken great joy in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The last three years she has resided at Manzano del Sol Health Care Center, 5201 Roma Avenue NE, Albuquerque and a Memorial Service will be held there on Wednesday, March 27, 2002 at 3:30 p.m. with Chaplain Mark Sutton, officiating. Cremation arrangements by the Sunrise Society of New Mexico, 891-8200.

Sidney D. Teller, 87, formerly of Brooklyn, NY passed away on March 16, 2002. He leaves his loving wife of 60 years, Ethel; adoring daughter, Kathleen and son-in-law, Nicholas Stamis both of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; sisters; nieces; nephews; and friends. A Memorial Service will be held in Garden City, NY at a later date.

Corine A. Vallejos died Thursday, March 21, 2002 in Albuquerque at the age of 22. She is survived by her mother, Karen Vallejos; fiance, Reyes Garcia; sons, Benito Reyes Garcia and Elijio Villapando; brother, Rudy Vito Vallejos, all of Albuquerque; and sisters, Lottie Vallejos and Becky Vallejos, both of Texarkana, TX, and Hope Lesperance of Tajique, NM. Funeral Services for Corine will be held on Monday at Holy Family Catholic Church where the Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Santa Clara Cemetery. A Rosary for Corine will be recited on Sunday evening at 7:00 p.m. with visitation beginning at 5:00 p.m. at Salazar & Sons Mortuary, 400 Third St. SW.

Marianne Faris Watson, a resident of Albuquerque since 1929, died Wednesday, March 20, 2002. She is survived by her husband, John William Watson of Albuquerque; son, Warren B. Miller of Albuquerque; daughter, Eleanor Kay Bardenheier of St. Louis, MO; stepdaughter, Karen Harrison of Durham, NC; stepson, John William Watson Jr. and wife Laquita of Burrelson, TX; nine grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. Mrs. Watson was a graduate of the University of New Mexico and a member of Phi Mu Sorority. She was also a member of Central United Methodist Church and one of the founders of NM Coin Club. Mrs. Watson worked for Valley Gold Dairies. She wrote articles for the 'Numismatics ', a coin magazine. She loved to also write poetry. She was a Distinguished Member of International Society of Poets. Services were held Saturday, March 23, 2002, 10:00 a.m., at French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE, with Rev. Marty Singletary officiating. Interment followed at Gate of Heaven Cemetery at Wyoming and Paseo Del Norte NE. French Mortuary, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE.
