Maria 'Susie' Sanchez, born September 19, 1911, passed away Saturday, March 22, 2003 at a local nursing home. She was preceded in death by her parents, Luis and Sara Sanchez; brother, Juan C. Sanchez; and sister, Taida Garcia. She is survived by Henry and Gloria Sanchez, Waldo and Marie Elaine Sanchez, and Tony Sanchez, and many loving nieces and nephews. Susie's early jobs included an elevator operator at the Knickerbocker Hotel in Hollywood, California, and a riveter with Lockheed-Martin. She retired from Woolworth in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and was a Foster Grandparent with the Mariposa Head Start Program for 20 years. She was born and raised in Martineztown and was a lifelong member of San Ignacio Church. Susie loved to gamble and play bingo and lived a strong happy life. The family would like to thank all the wonderful people who took such good care of her and loved her like a 'Grandma' at Valle Norte Nursing Home. Memorial Services for Susie will be held on Friday at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church where the Mass will be celebrated at 9:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. A Rosary will be recited on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church. Arrangements by Salazar & Sons Mortuary, 400 Third St. SW.

Paul A. Sanchez, 35, passed away March 20, 2003. He was preceded in death by his brother Lorenzo Villanueva. Paul is survived by his wife Carol Sanchez; children, Paul Anthoney R. Sanchez and Iven Maldonado; grandchildren, Ezekiel Maldonado, Cisco Maldonado; father, Filimon Sanchez and wife Diane; mother, Stella Sanchez; sisters, Rose Wersonick, Lorraine Storie and husband, Mike; brothers, Robert Sanchez, John Sanchez and wife, Roxanne, Chris Contreras; grandmother, Connie Bartlett; other family and friends who loved and will miss him. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 25, 2003 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., at the Direct Funeral Services Chapel. Robert J. Senseney, born May 14, 1923, made his passage on Thursday, March 20, 2003 following a heroic struggle with cancer. Robert's life was a celebration of determination, courage, vision, intellectualism, and phenomenal ingenuity. He was a devoted husband, a loyal and revered father, and a playful attentive grandfather. He served in combat in WWII and influenced many lives during his 25-year teaching career at Jefferson Jr. High. Robert was a man of remarkable talent - there wasn't a question he couldn't answer or a problem he couldn't solve. No project was beyond his ability. If it could be built, he could build it. Above all he was a teacher in all aspects of his life. He was a true renaissance man. Robert is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, JoAnn, their four children, Ronnelle Browning and husband, Dave of Washington, Jan Lemme and husband, Frederick of Texas, Robert Senseney, II, and wife, Nan of Wyoming, Jeff Sensensey and wife, Brenda of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Matthew Browning, Nicholas Browning, Frederick Lemme, Jr., Brooke Revels; brother, Gary Senseney of Connecticut; and sister-in-law, Marie Loudner of Oklahoma with whom he was very close. Robert will be missed tremendously for his guidance, creativity, wisdom, wit and enthusiasm. Our hearts are forever full from the inspiration of his rich and well-lived life. Services will be held Wednesday, March 26, 2003, 10:00 a.m., at French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel, with Pastor Rick Donaho officiating. Interment will take place at 1:00 p.m., at Santa Fe National Cemetery. Sofia R. Silva, age 85, beloved and devoted mother, grandmother and sister was welcomed into the arms of the Lord our Savior, Sunday, March 23, 2003. Sofia was born in Las Tusas, NM to the late Esteban and Adelaida Romero. She was most recently residing in Albuquerque, formerly of Las Vegas, NM; where she was a parishioner of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church; she also attended Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Albuquerque. Sofia was preceded in death by her husband, Eufracio J. Silva in 1999; and many brothers and sisters. She is survived by her loving children, Joe Silva and wife, Jennifer, Ben Silva and wife, Shirley-Rey of Rio Rancho, NM, Ida Martinez and husband, Anthony of Corrales, NM, Sadie Helms and husband, Alan of Lincoln, NE, Stella Copeland and husband, Mickey of Albuquerque, NM and Onesima Nolan and husband, Harry of Rociada, NM; ten grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Also surviving is one brother, Mariano Romero of Las Vegas, NM; numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Sofia will be greatly missed by her loving family and by those who knew and loved her. Visitations will be held Tuesday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church; where a Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. also at the church. Jeffry D. Surdahl, 46, or Swiftwater, Monroe County, Pennsylvania died Saturday in the Hospice Unit at Mercy Hospital, Scranton, PA after an illness. Born on September 19, 1956 in Garrison, North Dakota he was a son of Delano and Maxine (Stefonowicz) Surdahl, Albuquerque. He resided in Pennsylvania for the past four years and formerly in Montrose, CO four years and Albuquerque previously. Mr. Surdahl was a 1974 graduated of Sandia High School and attended New Mexico State at Las Cruces. He graduated from the TVI drafting program. He was employed as a pressman at several printing companies in Albuquerque and later in Colorado. He was last employed as a printer at the Huxley Envelope Co., Mount Pocono, PA. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1975 to 1979. He attended Calvary United Methodist Church, West Nanticoke and was a former member of Faith Lutheran Church, Albuquerque. Surviving in addition to his parents; is a son, Todd Jeffry Surdahl; and a daughter, Brenna Leigh Surdahl both of Tannersville, PA; brothers, Scott, of Albuquerque and Brian of Tulsa, OK; and one niece. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, March 29, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. in Calvary United Methodist Church, East Poplar St., West Nanticoke, PA with Rev. Peg Knapich, officiating. Edilberto (Eddie) Jacquez Trujillo, age 85, beloved and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother was called home to be with the Lord our Savior, Sunday, March 23, 2003, while surrounded by his loving family. Eddie was born in Blanco, NM to the late David and Zenobia Trujillo; he was a resident of Albuquerque; a proud Veteran of the United States Army; and a member of the American Legion Post #69. Eddie enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing and camping; but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family. Eddie has gone fishing to heavenly waters. Eddie was a very loving, compassionate and giving person, who always made time for everyone; people in general were important to him; he will always be remembered by the great sense of humor he had. We love you, daddy, you will always be in our hearts. Eddie is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Agnes Trujillo of the family home; his children, James Trujillo, Lawrence Trujillo, Carole Vincent and husband, Stephen, Virginia Wall and husband, Ray all of Albuquerque; 14 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, Sam Trujillo, Ruben Trujillo and his wife, Bennie; two sisters, Sara Valencia and Estella Martinez, all of Albuquerque; numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Eddie will be greatly missed by his loving family and by those who knew and loved him. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the Crossroads Hospice Group for their special care for our beloved Eddie. Clarence J. Whitfield, age 89, a resident of Albuquerque for 30-1/ 2 years died March 20, 2003. Survivors include his daughter, Patricia Giles of CO; grandsons, Cary L. Tyler and wife, Jeannea S., Jimmie C. Tyler; sister, Gertrude Dobbins of TX; great-grandchildren, Brandi, Jennifer and Amy. Clarence was preceded in death by his wife, Jimmie E. in 2000. JESUSITA S. CHAVEZ, 94, of El Duende and originally of El Guache died Monday. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jose Vicente Chavez; grandson, Davy Chavez; and her parents, Francisco Estevan Salazar and Teresita Vigil Salazar; a sister, Donelia Maestas; three brothers, Jose M. Salazar, Filomeno Salazar, and Rosenaldo Salazar. She is survived by her three sons, David Chavez and wife Dolores of Española, Patricio Chavez of Taos, and George Chavez and wife Sandy of Taos; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Cristobal Salazar of Española; and many other relatives and friends. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Block-Salazar Mortuary and a rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. at the San Jose Church in Hernandez. TRINNIE BORREGO ESPINOZA, died Monday at the home of her daughter, Valerie Espinoza. She was born Oct. 6, 1918, in Santo Nino to Juan C. and Lucia Borrego of Santo Nino. She was a well-known teacher for 40 years whose entire career was devoted to educating the children of the Española, Pojoaque and Santa Fe areas. She cherished teaching so much that she served as a substitute teacher for five years following her retirement. She was also the owner of KRDD radio station in Roswell. She was a long-time resident of Upper San Pedro. She was a respected and principled woman who was the eldest of nine siblings. She was considered a role model and mentor by her family and students whom she dearly loved. She maintained close relationships with her former students and their families long after serving as their teacher. She was preceded in death by her parents, Juan and Lucia Borrego; son, Reginaldo 'Geepo' Espinoza II; brother, Gilberto Borrego; sister, Ascencion 'Senny' Barth; and baby sister, Theresa Borrego. She is survived by her son, Carlos Espinoza of Santa Fe; daughter, Valerie Espinoza of Santa Cruz; two grandchildren; one great-granddaughter who she raised, Vanessa Romero Espinoza; brother, Juan Borrego and wife Theresa of Pojoaque; sister Petra Martinez and husband Castulo of Las Vegas, Nev.; sister Lydia Lopez and husband Ross of Fairview; sister, Amelia Lobato and husband Alfonso of Albuquerque; and sister, Christina Valerio of Santa Fe; five great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at Block-Salazar Mortuary. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Santa Cruz de la Canada Catholic Church. MAY W. GARCIA died Sunday. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cosme H. Garcia; and two sons, Anthony and Jimbo. She is survived by her children, Cosme H. Garcia, Jr. and wife Patsy, Pat Blatti and husband Kim; 18 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; brother, John Walsh of California; sisters, Nancy Corbett of California, and Evelyn Tibeau of Colorado. PABLO GOMEZ, 71, of Cuyamungue died Saturday. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eliseo and Maria Gomez; uncles and aunts, Martiniano Romero and wife Josie, Petronilo Romero and wife Juanita, Eleuteria Ortiz and husband Jose Elvirio Ortiz, Juan Gomez and wife Andrea, Austacia Garcia and husband Calletano, and Celestino Gomez and wife Amelia. He is survived by a cousin, Cleo Romero of Arroyo Seco; two uncles, Arturo A. Romero and wife Mary of Nambé, and Jose Ramon Romero and wife Frances of Nambe; two aunts, Genoveva Garduno of Grants and Teresita Sandoval of Nambé; and many other relatives and friends. Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. today and a rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. at Block-Salazar Mortuary. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Nambe. LILLIAN E. ISRAEL, 92, died March 15, 2003, in Santa Fe. She was born and raised in Canada and became a U.S. Citizen in 1955. She had a bachelor of arts, with majors in psychology and education, and was a registered nurse. She was active in community affairs since 1952, serving on local boards of Girl Scouts, League of Women Voters, Red Cross, Hospital Auxiliary, Family YMCA, Women's Golf Association, Little Theatre, Opera Guild, Heart Association, Episcopal Church and the Planning and Zoning Commission. She was also active on a state level as a member of the National Council of State Garden Clubs from 1965 in various capacities: State President, Nominating Committee member, Radio & T.V. Chairman, South Central Regional Director, and Scholarship Chairman. She was a volunteer in numerous other activities on local and state levels, including Los Alamos Planning and Zoning Commission. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Harvey I. Israel in 1978. She is survived by her son, Graham McManus and wife Sandra; four grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, all living in Canada. No services are planned. The body has been cremated and will be buried next to her late husband in Guaje Pines Cemetery. McGee Memorial Chapel.

GONZALO D. MARTINEZ, 72, of Chimay died Monday following a short illness. He was an electrical lineman, and was affiliated with I.B.E.W. Local 611. He was preceded in death by his parents, Melecio and Amalia; and brother, Arsenio. He is survived by his wife, Ermenda of Chimay; children, Delma Martinez and husband Marty, Sr., Vivian, Paul Martinez and Sam Martinez and wife Janice all of Chimay¢; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Public visitation will be at 6:30 p.m. today in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home with a rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. DeVargas Funeral Home of the Española Valley.

JESSE THOMAS POTEET JR., 77, of Santa Fe, died Saturday following an extended illness. He was self-employed in the home furnishings business for 35 years and the last 14 years with his son. He was a member of the 5th Marine Division, 28th Weapons Company and a decorated veteran of the battle of Iwo Jima. He also participated in the occupation of Japan. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joanna and Jesse Thomas Poteet, Sr.; and brothers Maurice Poteet and Donald Poteet. He is survived by his wife, Lorraine Poteet; daughter, Cheryl Ann Bloomfield and husband Dennis; son, Thomas Miles Poteet and wife Janice; brothers, Paul Poteet and wife Marjorie, Ronald Poteet and wife Jean, and Herschel Poteet and wife Sharon; two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. TOBIAS ROMERO, 56, of Chimay¢ died Friday following a lengthy illness. He was preceded in death by his father, Carpio Romero; father and mother-in-law, Ramon and Sarita Medina; sister, Aravela Martinez; daughter-in-law, Erneen Romero; brother-in-law, Richard Medina; sister-in-law, Susana Duran; and infant grandson, Angel Tobias Lopez. He is survived by his wife, Gloria; son, Toby Romero Jr.; daughters, Margaret Lopez and husband Gerald of La Mesilla, Sarita Trujillo and husband Darrell of Chimay¢; and an honorary daughter, Angela Vigil and husband Manuel; six grandchildren; mother, Carmelita Romero of Cordova; brothers, Severiano and wife Nelda of La Mesilla, Ricky and wife Debra of Truchas, Barney and wife Vivian of Ojo Sarco, and Bobby and Rodney of Cordova; sisters, Edna Dominguez of Española, and Janet Lopez and husband Eddie of El Llano; and many other relatives and friends. Cremation has taken place and a rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home.

BENCES VIGIL, 82, of Taos died Friday at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque after a brief illness. He was born Sept. 13, 1920, in Taos. He was an educator and administrator with the Taos Municipal and Taos County Schools where he was dedicated to the children and giving them the best education. He worked for the Costilla, Questa and Taos High Schools. After retirement, he became an Electrolux salesman. He was a dedicated member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church where he was a member of the Choir and also a Mayordomo. He was a member of the CBI Theater, a veteran of World War II and the Pilots Association and the Army Air Corp. He was preceded in death by his parents, J.N.R. and Domitila Vigil of Ranchos de Taos; brother, Jose Amadeo Vigil (Little Joe); and son, Marcos Vigil. He is survived by his wife, Fabiola; sons, James Vigil and wife Gloria, Allen Vigil and wife Kitty, Mario Vigil and wife Carla and Keith Vigil and wife Rebecca; siblings, Blas Vigil and wife Vera, Joe Loyola Vigil and wife Cecilia, Elui J. Vigil and wife Helen, Tessie Lopez, Francis Vigil, Loren Brooks and husband Everett, Eliza Naranjo, Reuben Vigil and wife Anabelle, John Vigil and wife Anna, and Jeanette Romero; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and many other relatives and friends. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. The family will have a reception after mass. They will be leaving from the Sisneros LaFollette Funeral Home at 1:30 p.m. to go to Santa Fe for the Burial. Burial will be at 3 p.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. DAVE D. WAGNER, 86, of Santa Fe died March 16, 2003. He was born Nov. 1, 1916, in Bayfield, Colo. He went to school at Alamosa High School. He moved to Santa Fe in 1946. He retired from the New Mexico State Highway Dept. in 1978 after 30 years as a design engineer. He became head of the Design Department. He was a master wood carver, making numerous carved items that were distributed across the United States. Many of his bird carvings won awards at the New Mexico State Fair. He was preceded in death by his wife, Charlene Sanford Wagner on Oct. 3, 1987. He is survived by his daughter, Sherrill Patterson; son, Dr. Dennis S. Wagner; four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at McGee Memorial Chapel. McGee Memorial Chapel.
