Milnor Joseph 'Joe' Romero died at University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque on August 1, 1998 of injuries sustained in an automobile accident 24 hours earlier. He was the youngest son of Jacob and Laura Elliott Romero. Joseph was a student at Madison Middle School, a member of the Y.A.F.L. football team, and a member of the Church of the Risen Savior. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Milnor Romero in 1992. He is survived by his parents, Jacob and Laura Romero of Albuquerque; a brother, Patrick Romero of Albuquerque; two sisters, April Romero and Natasha Martinez, both of Albuquerque; maternal grandmother, Evelyn Fuller of Camden, AR; and paternal grandmother, Beatrice Romero of Albuquerque. Other survivors are four aunts, Melinda Elliott of Dallas, TX, Julie Romero Montoya, Jeanette Orosco and husband, Octavanio, Joyce Chavarria and husband, Leroy, all of Albuquerque; an uncle, David Elliott and wife, Kirstie of Mt. Clemens, MI; and cousins, Frankie Romero, Michael Montoya, Jason Romero, Suzanna Orosco, Nathaniel Chavarria, and Dasha Chavarria, all of Albuquerque, and Luke and Ben Elliott of Mt. Clemens, MI. A Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. this evening at Chapel of Sandia Funeral Care. Mass of the Resurrection will be at 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, at the Church of the Risen Savior with Rev. Paul Baca as Celebrant. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Pallbearers will include Frankie Romero, Michael Montoya, Jason Romero, Nathaniel Chavarria, Mario Garcia and Steven Byrdsong. Memorial contributions may be made to the Joseph Romero Memorial Fund at any Nations Bank. Services are provided by Sandia Funeral Care, 7601 Wyoming Blvd. NE.

Edna Louise Scheihagen passed away July 30, 1998. Edna was born September 14, 1910 in Cleveland, Ohio to Edward Seager and Anna Dahm Seager. She moved to Raton, NM in 1939, where she met and married William Roswell 'Shy' Scheihagen Jr. on February 14, 1942. Following her husband's military service during World War II, Edna and Shy farmed in Hereford, TX with his parents. In 1947, they moved to northern New Mexico and settled in Las Vegas in 1950, where Enda was employed by Stephens-Irish Agency and First Federal Savings and Loan Association. In 1967, Edna and Shy moved to Albuquerque and subsequently to Edgewood in 1972, where she resided at the time of her death. Edna was a member of Christ Unity Church in Albuquerque. Edna was preceded in death by her husband. She is survived by two daughters, Judy Roberts of Piedmont, OK and Peggy Gallegos and her husband, Richard of Vaughn, NM; five grandchildren, Michelle Rigdon and her husband, Brian of Edgewood, Gingah Martinez of Albuquerque, Jack Roberts and his wife, Ambek of Oklahoma City, OK, Jody Roberts of Denver, CO, and Jana Roberts of Piedmont, OK; five great-grandchildren, Melissa and Stan Rigdon, Seanano Lindsay Martinez and Mason Roberts. Services will be held at Christ Unity Church, Albuquerque, on August 5, 1998 at 2:00 p.m.

Jean W. Stauffer died August 1, 1998, at her home in Albuquerque, NM from A.L.S. (Lou Gehrig's Disease). Before moving to New Mexico she was a resident of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina for 21 years. She was the widow of Robert Stauffer, who died in 1987. She was born and raised in Kansas and attended Kansas State University. She was preceded in death by her parents. Jesse and Edna White of Willis, Kansas. She is survived by her daughter, Diana J. Stauffer of Albuquerque; and two sisters, Betty Redmon of Shawnee Mission, Kansas, and Donna Bruning of Robinson, Kansas. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Forbes Norris Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Research Center, Box 7999, San Francisco, CA 94102, or Presbyterian Healthcare Foundation Home Care and Hospice Fund, PO Box 26666, Albuquerque, NM. Cremation has taken place. Services are private.

Rosemary Traverse, 64, a resident of Albuquerque since 1987, died on Monday, August 3, 1998. She is survived by her daughter, Cathy Quinones; sons, Russell Traverse and wife, Son Kyo, all of Albuquerque, Richard Traverse and wife, Diane of California, and Ronald Traverse of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Jason Traverse, Jessica and Steven Quinones, Dawn, Lisa and Kevin Traverse, Ryland, Jarron, Erish, and Kelvin Traverse. Mrs. Traverse was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence W. Traverse on January 2, 1978. She was greatly loved by her family and deeply missed. Services will be held Wednesday, August 5, 1998, 10:00 a.m., at French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel, 10500 Lomas NE, with Pastor David Repp officiating. Interment will take place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Hayward, CA. Friends may visit French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel, Tuesday, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Reve Wallins Weisberg, born April 27, 1913, in Decatur, Illinois to I.A. and Golda Wallins, passed away Sunday, August 2, 1998. Mrs. Weisberg is survived by her loving husband of 46 years, Edwin Weisberg of Albuquerque; one daughter, Susan Frisch of Denver, CO; one son, Bob Weisberg and his wife, Debbie of Albuquerque; five grandchildren, Christopher Weisberg, Jason Weisberg, Ross Cummings, Rebecca Frisch, and Zachary Frisch; one great-grandchild, Sydney Weisberg. Mrs. Weisberg graduated summa cum laude from Millikin University and received her MA degree from the University of Illinois. She had been a member of Congregation Albert since 1940, serving as president of Congregation Albert Sisterhood for two years. She was also a member of the Four Hills Country Club Gold Association, where she served as treasurer for two years, and a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority. Funeral services for Mrs. Weisberg will be held Tuesday, August 4, 1998, at 11:00 a.m. in Congregation Albert, 3800 Louisiana Blvd. NE, with Rabbi Joseph R. Black and Cantor Jacqueline Shuchat-Marx officiating. Strong-Thorne Mortuary, 1100 Coal Ave. SE, are in charge of arrangements.

Scott Allan Wightman, age 23, of Santa Fe, died peacefully on Friday, July 31, 1998. He was born in New York City, NY on September 28, 1974 to Mark and Mary Ann Wightman. Scott was employed at St. Vincent Hospital, where he worked at central services. He is survived by his parents, Mark and Mary Ann Wightman of Santa Fe; and his brother, Reeve Wightman of Santa Fe. Services have been held. Arrangements are under the direction of Berardinelli Family Funeral Service, 1399 Luisa, Santa Fe, 984-8600.

Antonio Zamora, 89, passed away after a long illness on August 1, 1998. Antonio is survived by his beloved wife, Precilla, of 52 years. He is also survived by his loving children: Anna, Tony and wife, Arlene, David and wife, Joanne, Joe and wife, Ida; 16 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; his sister, Lala Sena and brother Phillip. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Quirina Ronquillo. Antonio was truly an exceptional man in life and continued to teach us about persistence, tcommitment, devotion and humor in his dying. He will greatly be missed. An hour viewing at 9:00 a.m. will precede the Mass of the Resurrection which will be celebrated at Holy Family Catholic Church, 562 Atrisco Drive SW on Tuesday, August 4 at 10:00 a.m. Pallbearers are: Nash Zamora, Steve Zamora, Matthew Zamora, Ruben Ramirez, Dennis Chavez and Ben Ronquillo. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements are being made by Direct Burial Services.

Lowell A. Zufall, 83, passed peacefully Thursday, July 30, of natural causes. He was a longtime Old Town resident and business owner, WW2 Pacific Theater Veteran, Beloved Father, Grandfather and Friend. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Brian Davis; grandchildren, Brian Jr., Daniel, Sara and Kathryn Davis, all of Indianapolis; and his son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Elisabeth Zufall of Ponderosa, NM. A private memorial service will be held in Indianapolis at a later date.

J. Fred Bayless, former longtime resident and Christian minister in Albuquerque, passed away peacefully in Craig, Colorado, on Wednesday, June 17, 1998, just days before his 94th birthday. He was born June 19, 1998 in Indian Territory, now the state of Oklahoma. Although he quit high school to help support his seven siblings, he later graduated from Johnson Bible College in Tennessee, where he met and married Louise McCamy in 1933. He taught at the college and later served in preaching ministries in Selma, AL; Eureka, KS; Medicine Lodge, KS; Crowell, TX; Albuquerque, NM; Clovis, NM; and Pueblo, CO. He served as minister of Ridgecrest Christian Church in Albuquerque from 1952-1961. He helped found several Bible colleges in the Midwest, and served for 40 years as forwarding agent for his son, David, missionary in Brazil. After retirement from active ministry, he continued to serve as elder in the church here. His beloved wife, Louise preceded him in death in 1992. Fred moved to Colorado in 1996. He is survived by son, David Bayless of Belem, Brazil; daughter, Anne Carr of Craig, CO; grandchildren, Joanne Standford of Wichita, KS, John Bayless of Albuquerque, Anne Bayless of Belem, Brazil, Keith and Carolyn Carr of Craig; and four great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at Ridgecrest Christian Church at San Mateo near Gibson, on Friday, June 26, at 1:00 p.m. Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be designated to the Ridgecrest Mission Fund in memory of Fred Bayless.

I.V. Mae Burrell, 92, a resident of Belen, passed away on Friday, June 19, 1998. She was a member of the Pentecostal Church. I.V. was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Onous Burrell in 1960; her son, Hershell in 1944; baby Roy in 1937 and James in 1985. She is survived by her two sons, Coy Burrell and his wife, Shirley Ann of Clovis, NM and Bob and his wife, Suzy of Rio Rancho, NM; eight grandchildren; several great and great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her many loving nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be celebrated on Monday, 10:00 a.m., at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Coy, Bob and Wayne Burrell, Allan Jesko, David Feldkamp and Sean Little. Honorary pallbearers will be Merle Schalber, Frank Parker, Dick Ralston, Henry Lamkin and Frank Fullington. Romero Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Minnie B. Cheney, 99, formerly of Albuquerque, died Tuesday, June 16, 1998 in Lubbock, TX. Minnie, the third of eight children, was born to Erasmus Manford Behymer and Sarah Elizabeth Ford Behymer on February 25, 1899, in Newkirk, OK. While Minnie was a young child, her family moved from Oklahoma to the Estancia Valley, where her father homesteaded. She is survived by her son, Ed Cheney and wife, Estelle of Durango, CO; grandchildren, Britt Fraim, Barbara Zeiher, Patsy Mayo, Bob Brittain, Rick Brittain, Jon Cheney, Cindy Brent, and Becky Gauthier; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Minnie was preceded in death by her children, Ruth B. Fraim, Robert Brittain, and Richard Brittain. Services will be Monday, 2:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, 1111 University Blvd. NE, with Pastor Tim Sandy officiating. Interment will take place at Estancia Cemetery in Estancia. Pallbearers will be Bob Brittain, Rick Brittain, Billy Brittain, Larry Mayo, Steven Mayo, and David Brent. Friends may visit French Mortuary, 1111 University Blvd. NE, Sunday, 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The family requests memorial contributions be made to Noonday Ministries, P.O. Box 25451, 87187. French Mortuary, 1111 University Blvd. NE.

Funeral services for Cecelia G. Chronis, 90, an Albuquerque resident and retired school teacher, will be Saturday, 3:00 p.m., at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 308 High SE. Burial will be in Fairview Memorial Park. Mrs. Chronis, who moved back to Albuquerque in 1990 after living many years in Grand Junction, CO, died Wednesday after a long illness. She taught Latin and was the librarian at St. Pius X High School in Albuquerque in the early 1960's and later taught Latin and classical Greek at a high school in Grand Junction before retiring in 1973. The former Cecelia Papparodis was born January 19, 1908 in Greece and emigrated to the United States as a small child. Mrs. Chronis was raised in Beaver Falls, PA and educated in public and parochial schools there. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Latin and Greek from Geneva College in Beaver Falls in 1931 and her Master's degree in classical languages from the University of Pittsburgh in 1933. She taught school and was a librarian in Pennsylvania public schools. She and the late George P. Chronis were married on Mother's Day, 1940, and lived for many years in Pittsburgh, where they were in the restaurant business. Mrs. Chronis returned to teaching in 1959, and in 1960, the family moved to Albuquerque. The family moved to Grand Junction, where Mr. Chronis was in business, in 1963. Mrs. Chronis was a lifelong member of the Greek Orthodox Church and the Philoptochos Society. She was active in the Eastern Star and the Republican Party. She was predeceased by her husband in 1996. She is survived by two sons, Nicholas G. Chronis and wife, Voula of Albuquerque and Peter G. Chronis and wife, Stacy of Denver, CO; three grandsons, George P. Chronis II and Damon N. Chronis, both of Albuquerque, and David P. Chronis of Denver, CO. Strong-Thorne Mortuary, 1100 Coal Ave. SE, in charge of arrangements.

Walter Russell Drake, 73, a resident of Edgewood, passed away on Wednesday, June 17, 1998. Mr. Drake was born in Spring City, TN on November 14, 1924. He was honorably discharged from the US Army after serving with the 7th Infantry in the Italian Campaign during WWII. Mr. Drake retired from Sandia National Laboratory in 1988 after 41 years service. He is survived by his wife, Opal Drake of the family home; son, Tony Drake and wife, Lorraine of Farmington; daughter, Amanda Drake of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Kenny Drake and wife, Missy of Farmington, Shawna Drake, Christopher Cordeiro and Hollie Cordeiro, all of Albuquerque; great-granddaughters, Ashlee and Desi Drake, both of Farmington, NM; and a brother, A.L. Drake of Dayton, TN. Services will be held at 12:30 p.m., Monday, at French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel. Interment will follow at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. Friends may visit French Mortuary, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE, Sunday, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Should friends desire, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 5800 Lomas Blvd. NE, Albuquerque, NM 87110 or to the charity of your choice. Robert Manly Duncan
September 12, 1903-June 12, 1998.
R.M. Duncan was born in Estelline Texas. He moved to New Mexico as a teenager, graduating from Farmington High School in 1921. He graduated from Oberlin College in 1926. He spent the next two years teaching at the Insituto Ingles in Santiago, Chile. Upon his return to the U.S., he began his graduate studies. He taught at Oberlin College for two years while obtaining his Masters and received his Ph.D. in Romance Philology from the University of Wisconsin in 1936. He was on the faculty at UNM from 1937 until his retirement in 1969. During his tenure as Chairman of the Department of Modern and Classical Languages, the department as well as the university received national recognition for the excellence of the language program. He showed a lifelong interest in Spain, and was a past president of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. His concern for the welfare of educators in New Mexico led him to be instrumental in the creation of the Public Employees Retirement Act and he served on the board of that organization for several years. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Nina B. Duncan, and his second wife, Betty W. Duncan. He is survived by his wife, Breck; son, Robert B. Duncan and wife, Barbara; daughter, Nancy D. Swigger and husband, Ron; son, John Wm. Duncan II and wife, Fran; and four grandchildren, Jocelyn Swigger, Bettina Swigger, Juan Ramon Duncan, and Rebeca Marjorie Duncan. A memorial service will be held at Keller Hall on the University of New Mexico Campus, Saturday, June 20 at 4:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the University of New Mexico Library or the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra.

Twila P. Fisher, 80, a resident of Albuquerque since 1948, died Wednesday, June 17, 1998. She is survived by her son, James P. Fisher of Albuquerque; sisters, Mary McFarland of Indianapolis, IN and Martha Black of Apache Junction, AZ; brothers, James Elder and wife, Joan of Shelbyville, IN and Kenneth Elder of Crawfordsville, IN; niece, Connie Burress and husband, John of Albuquerque; and numerous other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Morris P. Fisher in 1982. Mrs. Fisher was born on September 30, 1917 in Crawfordsville, IN, the daughter of C.V. and Gladys M. (Walter) Patton. She graduated from Forest, IN High School and also from Terhune Secretarial College. Mrs. Fisher was a member of Delta Theta Tau Sorority, a business and professional women's organization in Shelbyville, IN. She was a charter member of Soroptimist International of Albuquerque Heights. Mrs. Fisher worked in the small loan department of Farmers Bank and was the manager of American Security Company in Shelbyville, IN. She married Morris P. Fisher on May 20, 1939 and they moved to Albuquerque on December 30, 1948. Mrs. Fisher worked for P.F. McCanna, Inc. from February 1949 to December 1953. In 1954, she began working for D.W. Eakin Company Realtors as office manager, and worked there until the day of her death. Services will be held Monday, 3:00 p.m., at Chester T. French Memorial Mausoleum Chapel, 924 Menaul NE, with Rev. Charles Fish officiating. Cremation will follow services. Friends may visit French Mortuary, 1111 University Blvd. NE, Sunday, 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The family requests memorial contributions be made to the New Mexico Boys and Girls Ranch, 6209 Hendrix NE 87110. Albert D. Kaufman, 69, of Albuquerque, passed away at home on June 10, 1998. Al was born in Erie, Pennsylvania; and lived in Park Forest, Illinois and Tempe, Arizona. He was co-owner and president of his business. Al is survived by his wife of 44 years, Mary Louise (Lou); sons, Mark J. and wife, Lisa of Carlsbad, CA and Michael B. and wife, Jeanette of Richton Park, IL; daughter, Karen M. and husband, Dale of Grapevine, TX; and six grandchildren. A memorial Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated June 20, 1998, 10:00 a.m., at Prince of Peace Catholic Community, 12500 Carmel NE, Albuquerque. Visiting with family and friends will be in the church gathering space after the service. Friends are asked to wear bright colored clothing in celebration of life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, Lovelace Hospice, Prince of Peace Catholic Community or a charity of your choice. Roberto Lujan, 83, a native New Mexican and longtime resident of Albuquerque's South Valley, passed away peacefully on June 11, 1998. Roberto, also known by his kids as the 'general' was born April 25, 1915, to Andres and Juanita Lujan. He was a parishioner of St. Anne's Catholic Church. Roberto enjoyed playing the accordian, taking on the telephone, and spending time with his large family. He is survived by his devoted and beautiful wife, Aurora Lujan. He is also survived by his children: sons, Frank and wife, Rita, Gilbert and wife, Corrine, Richard and wife, Mary Jane, Florenio and wife, Theresa, Robert and wife, Esperanza, Abran and wife, Lilly, Leroy, Michael and wife, Sally, Oliver and wife, Gloria, Telesfore, Ralf, David and wife, Linda, Mario and wife, Mayela; daughters, Odelia and husband, Henry Garcia, Laura and husband, Raymond Romero. He has two remaining sisters, Concha Chavez (95) and Emma Garley (89). His legacy will live through his grandchildren, which he called 'poom-par-ooom-pooms '; 43 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren. Robert has already been laid to rest by his family and friends on June 13, 1998, which was his 63rd wedding anniversary to Aurora. May the Angels come to greet him on his journey home. Roberto's family wishes to thank all their relatives and friends who attended the Rosary and Funeral services. We also want to thank everyone for all the prayers, love, care, and compassion that the family has seen and experienced. Most of all WE, the Lujan Family, would like to thank Roberto Lujan for being a special man who loved, inspired, and taught everyone he encountered.
