Sylvia Rose Boyer, age 62, beloved and devoted wife, mother and grandmother was called home to be with the Lord, after a long illness on Friday, September 27, 2002. Boyer resided in New Mexico, and was as well a long time resident of Hawaii. She is survived by George Boyer, her husband of 42 years; and her three children, Earl R. Boyer and wife, Sue of New York, Charlene M. Johnson and husband, Jerry of Colorado and Tammy L. Dearth and husband, Jeffrey of Indiana; as well as 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Sylvia will be missed by her loving family and by those who knew and loved her. Sylvia lived her life to the fullest through her family and numerous friends. A memorial service is planned for Friday, October 4, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the VFW #401, 2011 Girard Blvd. SE. Sunrise Society is serving the family of Mrs. Boyer. (891-8200)

John (Johnny) Candelaria, age 79, beloved and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle was called home to be with the Lord, Saturday, September 28, 2002. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Candelaria; daughter and son-in-law, Christine and Tom Isselhard of Albuquerque; beloved grandchildren, Derek and Leslie Isselhard of Albuquerque; sister, Ella Montoya of Victorville, CA; brothers, Tom Candelaria and wife, Rose of Fresno, CA, Ramon Candelaria of Albuquerque, Joseph A. Candelaria of Fresno, CA, James Candelaria and wife, Irma of Houston, TX and Eloy Candelaria and wife, Terri of Albuquerque; and sister-in-law, Feliciana Candelaria of Albuquerque and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. His parents Joe and Rose Candelaria, son, John Candelaria Jr., brothers, Jerry and Alberto and sister, Sefora, preceded him in death. John was born on May 4, 1923 to a family with long heritage in Albuquerque. He and his family are heirs of the La Merced De Atrisco established in the 1700's. John entered the U.S. Navy on June 5, 1942. He and Mary were married on April 9, 1944 in Los Angeles, California. Upon John's departure from the Navy he and Mary came to Albuquerque to establish their home and John began his first career as a barber. He later opened two barber shops and became a known member of the North Valley community. John and Mary, also, bought and operated a Dairy Queen for many years. After leaving a career in barbering he entered the Bernalillo Sheriff's Department and began a second career in law enforcement. This was his place of retirement from traditional employment. Upon his retirement, John and his wife, Mary began their more active career in the Lord's work. They began working with various outreach groups in Albuquerque and then began their missionary work in Mexico. They were able to make numerous visits to Mexico to witness and spread the Lord's word. John will be remembered as one who entered peoples lives and brought laughter, joy of spirit and the Lord's generosity. He became a dear and special friend to the people who entered his life through family, work, ministry and community. He emulated the joys of life and the spirit of giving. He was the caretaker of his children and grandchildren--they loved and admired him dearly. He was a great storyteller, jokester and tease. John's missionary work in Mexico was dear to his heart. His love was to minister through his guitar music. John's family is comforted in the knowledge that he is with the Lord. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, October 2, 2002 at 7:00 p.m. at Glorybound Ministries, 11913 Menaul Blvd. NE, Albuquerque, New Mexico. Internment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations or memorials to his memory be made to the John Candelaria Mission Fund at Well's Fargo Bank. The fund will be used to continue John's dream, to provide a school for the orphanage in Saltillo, Mexico. Arrangements by Salazar and Sons Mortuary

Modesto C. 'MC' Chavez
March 15, 1915 - October 1, 2002
Modesto C.'MC' Chavez, 87, a life long resident of Peralta, NM, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, October 01, 2002. Mr. Chavez was preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Eva G. Chavez on September 16, 1998. He is survived by his three daughters, Stella Apodaca and husband, Joe of Bosque Farms, Lydia Baca and husband, Alex of Peralta, and Ida Mae Rakes de Chavez of Albuquerque; and one son, Eddie M. Chavez and wife, Kathy of Peralta; eight grandchildren, Ramona Wolfe and husband, Ben, Ramon Perea and wife, Tina, Evangeline Rodriquez and husband, Jose, Richard Baca and wife, Carmen, Nanette Rosas, Joshua Chavez and wife, Jennifer, Craig Chavez and Suzy Wulf, Danielle Adkins and husband, Ronnie; 16 great-grandchildren; three brothers; one sister; and many close friends and relatives. A viewing will be held Thursday, October 3, 2002 in the Romero Funeral Home Chapel beginning at 1:30 p.m. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. with Jim Price and Diann Newhouse officiating. Interment will be in the Peralta Methodist Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Raymond Perea, Richard Baca, Isaiah Wolfe, Micah Wolfe, Joshua Chavez, and Craig Chavez. Honorary pallbearers will be Adenago Perea, Alejandro Hernandez, Martin Sanchez, Lalo Otero, and Gerardo Vargas. The New Mexico State Police Color Guard will provide the motor escort and Honor Guard. Today we mourn the unexpected loss of Robert Warren Clemens. Born May 2, 1957, he passed on September 27, 2002. Robert is survived by a daughter, August Clemens; a son, Eric Clemens of Albuquerque; a beloved mother, Betty Trombley of Concho Valley, AZ; a grandson, Peter Clemens of Albuquerque; brothers, Dr. David Barrett of Albuquerque, Donald Clemens of Highlands Ranch, CO and Grant Trombley, his wife, Leilani, and children, Jaimie and Jason of Fort Collins, CO; aunt, Dorothea Crutchfield of Albuquerque. John Lawrence Cotinola was called to be with his heavenly father on Saturday, September 28, 2002. He was living in Carson City, Nevada. John is survived by his wife, Carmen Cotinola; step-daughters, Sandra Perez, Yolanda Vela and husband, Carlos; two granddaughters and four grandsons; mother, Cathy (Katy) Cotinola; sister, Judy Cotinola Ramos and husband, Armando; niece, Danielle Brittney Ramos; John was an avid Dallas Cowboy's fan, he enjoyed football, basketball and Nascar Racing. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 2, 2002 at Fitzgerald & Son Funeral Directors, 3113 Carlisle Blvd NE with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:00 a.m., Thursday, October 3, 2002 in San Felipe de Neri Church at Old Town with Fr. Dorothy Ann Cowdrey, 83, a resident of Albuquerque since 1991, died Tuesday, October 1, 2002. She is survived by her sisters, Evelyn Marie Ellis and husband, Nevin of Arkansas and Jeanette Grimes and husband, Jack of California; and caregivers, Doug and Mary Sue Whitaker of Tijeras and many friends. Mrs. Cowdrey was preceded in death by her brother, William D. Williams. She enjoyed watching all sports on TV and reading books of all kinds. Her personality was generous and kind hearted. Mrs. Cowdrey loved her cats. Graveside services will take place at Rosehill Cemetery in Whittier, California. French Mortuary, 1111 University Blvd. NE.

Robert 'Bob' Danforth
May 11, 1927 - September 30, 2002
Robert 'Bob' Danforth, 75, a long time resident of Belen passed away on Monday, September 30, 2002. He was an avid bowler at Sugar Bowl Lanes and Bosque Farms Bowling Alley. Bob was a well-known businessman owning and operating 'Bob's Welding' for over 31 years. He was also known around the community for his love of music and dancing. Preceding him in death were his mother, Ethel Danforth in 1993; his father, Harry Danforth in 1945; and his sister, Betty Doty in 1975. Bob is survived by his loving daughter, Nicole Danforth and her fiancé, Marcus Head of Tennessee; and his sister, Thelma Coffey and her husband, Herman of Belen. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and many dear friends. All services will be held at the Romero Funeral Home Chapel. A visitation will take place on October 2, 2002 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. A funeral service will be celebrated on Thursday, October 3, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. and will follow with interment at Terrace Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Gene Goodson, Charlie Myers, John English, Karl Hoffman, Max Montano, Leonard King, Dustin Watson, and Terry Moore. Honorary Pallbearers will be Wes Watson and Max Coffey.

Bettie Lou Demaree, age 77, was called home to our Lord and Savior Friday, September 27, 2002. Bettie was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Elvin 'Al' Demaree and son, Terry Demaree. She is survived by her daughters and son, Betty Jo Hindi, Belinda Demaree, and Larry and Sylvia Demaree. Also surviving are grandchildren, Sherri, Danny, Wende and A.J. and great-grandchildren, Raymon, Steven, M'Lynn, Code, and the newest, Teryn. Bettie will be greatly missed by her loved ones, friends and neighbors. Sunrise Society is serving the family. (891-8200)

Lee Brownlow Irick, 20, a student at the College of Santa Fe died Saturday, 28 September 2002 after a brief illness. A gentle giant of a young man, he will be greatly missed by his fellow students and extended Family. Lee was born on February 1, 1982, in Albuquerque, and as a child attended Manzano Day school. In 1994, he moved with his mother, Melinda, to Gallup, where he graduated from Gallup Highschool in 2001. At the time of his death, he was studying Moving Images as sophomore at the College of Santa Fe where he was also a class senator during his freshman year. He worked in the fast food industry while in high school and during his summer vacations. His interests included film, and playing music with his best friend, Jim. He is survived by his mother, Melinda Hirst; his father and stepmother, John E. and Patricia Irick; his maternal grandfather and stepgrandmother, Lee and Marie Hirst; his maternal grandmother, Linn Hirst; his paternal grandmother, Gayle Irick; his sister, Mara Harrell and his stepbrother, Abe Plotsky. Other surviving relatives include Paula Alcon, Dan and Jody Irick, Sally and Dan Pearson and his numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, John B. Irick, a New Mexico state legislator and politician. The family would like to extend a very special thank you to his heroic friend Mario Sepres, who gave Lee CPR in his final moments. A memorial celebration of Lee Irick's life is set for noon Wednesday, October 2, at The Quad at the College of Santa Fe. This memorial is organized and will be presented by his co-students who will greatly miss his wit and charm. Prior to the memorial, poetry and flowers may be attached to his truck, which is currently parked behind the college dormitory

Josephine Lucero passed away Sunday morning, September 29, 2002 at 7:00 a.m. after a short illness. She is survived by her daughter, Betty Lucero; son, George J. Lucero and wife, Gloria and Steve Lucero and wife, Sharon; grandchildren, Steven and Brandy Lucero, Matthew Lucero and Symone Lucero; and two great-grandchildren, Charles and Issac Lucero. She was preceded in death by her husband, George F. Lucero in 2000 and a grandson, Charles Lucero. Josephine was a long time member of San Ignacio Catholic Church. Funeral services are 10:00 a.m. today at San Ignacio Catholic Church, 1300 Walter NE. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Phil A. Lucero, 59, went home to be with the Lord on September 29, 2002. He was born on February 25, 1943 in Jerome, AZ. Mr. Lucero was the owner of Snow Heights Bingo. He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Frances S. Lucero of Albuquerque, NM; sons, Jake Lucero and wife, Cindy of Las Vegas, NM, Randolph Lucero of Phoenix, AZ and Abran Lucero of Las Vegas, NM; daughters, Denise Lucero of Albuquerque, NM and Nadine Lucero of Las Vegas, NM; mother-in-law, Georgia Sandoval; brother, Macedon Lucero and wife, Judy of Flagstaff, AZ; sisters, Louisa Dean and husband, Ross of Albuquerque, NM, Rita Lucero and husband, Albert of Albuquerque, NM and Vicky Almendarez and husband, Tony of Flagstaff, AZ; sisters and brothers-in-law who loved him very much, Uncle Arturo Tafoya and wife, Amalia; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Mr. Lucero will be deeply missed by his loving family. A Rosary will be recited on Wednesday evening at St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church at 7:00 p.m., 5712 Paradise Blvd. N.W. (Paradise Hills). Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday morning also at St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church at 10:00 a.m. Pallbearers will be Alex Baca, Manuel Lucero, Lawrence Dean, Jason Lucero, Nick Aragon, Mel Sandoval, Henry

Juan B. Martinez, age 89, beloved father, grandfather, and brother was called home to be with the Lord our Savior, Sunday, 29, 2002. Juan was a parishioner of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church; a proud United States Navy Veteran who served our country during World War II; he was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter III. Juan is survived by his sons, J.V. Martinez, Jr. and wife, Ruby of Albuquerque, Joseph M. Martinez and wife, Blanca of San Diego, CA, Anthony M. Martinez of Pueblo, CO, Ted A. Martinez of Albuquerque; one daughter, Maria Wolff and husband, Ted also of Albuquerque; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Martina Herrera and Victoria Chavez and husband, Tomas both of Santa Fe, NM; daughter in law, Nancy Martinez; and many other relatives. Juan will be greatly missed by his loving family and by those who knew and loved him. Richard D. Myers, 81, a resident of Albuquerque for 39 years, died Saturday, September 28, 2002. He is survived by his son, Randall R. Myers and wife, Ida and daughter, Lorene J. Myers and Cathy Marble, all of Albuquerque. Mr. Myers was a veteran who served in the US Navy during WWII. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church. Memorial Services will be held Thursday, October 3, 2002, 3:30 p.m. at French Mortuary, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE with Rev. Luther M. Mathsen officiating. Our brother, Marcelino Ortega, has passed away Saturday the 28th of September 2002. He is survived by his brothers, Manuel, George, and Edward Ortega; sisters, Julie Montoya, Lucy Martinez, and Laura Ortega; many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, other family and friends who will miss him dearly. Helen Patten, passed away on September 30, 2002. She was born on April 24, 1909. Helen is a member of Laguna Pueblo and from the Village of Paguate. Helen is survived by her son, John M. Patten; granddaughters, Monica Patten, Melanie Patten, and Valerie Cook; great-granddaughter, Helen Vargas-Chaves, and she is also survived by Florence Reed. Helen was preceded in death by her husband of over fifty years, James Patten, and her son, Augie Patten. Helen graduated from the Albuquerque Indian School and lived the rest of her life in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She helped raise many children and was looked upon as a grandma by many. Helen is remembered by family and friends. Services will be held Wednesday, October 2, 2002 at 1:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, 1111 University Blvd. NE, with Pastor Byron Sarracino officiating. Daniel J. Payne, age 96 and a resident of Albuquerque for the past 15 years, died on September 30, 2002. He was born in Hamlin, TX to Daniel J. and Alice Williamson Payne and spent most of his life in Roswell, NM where he was office manager for the Pecos Valley Cotton Oil Company. He also served on the Eastern New Mexico Fair Board Commission. His hobbies included fishing, golfing and hunting. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Rubinelle; a daughter, Dianna Ottmann and husband, Jim of Albuquerque; a niece, Glynne H. Galles of Albuquerque and her children, Teri Bryan, Tracee Dezzutti and Tim Galles; and his brother, Charles Polk and wife, Kay of Loving, NM. Also surviving are grandsons, Danny Ottmann and wife, Tracie of Albuquerque and Tim Ottmann and wife, Angela of Denver, CO and four great-grandchildren, Ashley Ottmann and Casey, Jake and Karli Ottmann. Memorial Services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, October 4, 2002 at Chapel of Sandia, 7601 Wyoming Blvd NE with Pastor Rick Donaho of New Covenant Church officiating. Warren Poitra, 76, passed away September 29, 2002. He served in Korea in the US Army as a Staff Sergeant and worked many years for his good friend, Johnny Barberi who owns Cork and Bottle Liquor Store. Warren was preceded in death by his only daughter, Renee and is survived by his loving wife of many years, Mary Poitra; three grandchildren; sisters, Sylvia, Gloria, and Lucy; brothers, Lawrence, Gilbert, Leon, Frank, other family and friends who will miss him. A funeral service will be held in the Chapel of Direct Funeral Services on Thursday, October 3, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. Arrangements by Direct Funeral Services, 2919 4th St. NW.
