Martin F. Sachs, 92, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 11, 1999 at his daughter's home in Albuquerque, where he had resided since 1995. Prior to that, he was a lifelong resident of Belen, where he was a member of Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church. He was involved in the Belen Public School System, both as a teacher and principal until he retired after 45 years of service. Martin was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, who passed away July 2nd of 1998; and his parents, Henry and Felipita Sachs; four brothers, Samuel, Henry II, Ignacio, and Tony; one sister, Margaret Gallegos. Martin has left behind two daughters, Angeline Velasquez and husband, Robert of Albuquerque, Mary Ann Jaramillo and husband, Gillie of Los Lunas; ten grandchildren, Renee Sachs, Gilbert Jaramillo, Nadine Gurule, Antherese Mulryan and husband, Gary, all of Albuquerque, Analee Kuidis and husband, Gary, Martin Jaramillo and wife, Cynthia, all of Los Lunas, Leanne Velasquez, Celeste Cruise and husband, John of Denver, CO, Mary Ann Sorenson and husband, Brad of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Robert Martin Velasquez of Tennessee. Martin is also survived by 16 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Rosary will be recited on Wednesday, 7:00 p.m., at Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, 10:00 a.m., at Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church. Interment will follow at the Parish Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Daniel Vallejos, Henry Sachs III, M. Andrew Garrison, Martin Jaramillo, Larry Gurule, and Robert Velasquez. Romero Funeral Home, 609 N. Main St., Belen, NM.

Shelby F. Steele, 75, a resident of Tijeras died Monday, March 1, 1999. He is survived by his wife, Sondra Steele of Tijeras; sons, Shelby Steele and wife, Diane of Alaska, Dennis Steele of Texas; daughters, Mary Steele of Pennsylvania, Luan Green and husband, Kalvin of Washington, Tressa and Darrel Harris, Alvah Brown and husband, Karon, Shira Zippe and husband, Kurt, all of Texas. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Fara Holmes of Texas; one brother, three sister-in-laws, 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Mr. Steele served in the Air Force SAC (Strategic Air Command) for 20 years. He was a lifetime member of the DAV and he was a member of Ambassador Ministries House of Zoe (Apostolic Prophetic Church). Shelby laid down his life for his country, his wife, his children and for the Lord. Friends may visit Wednesday, March 3, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. at Aspen Funeral Alternatives, 1935 Juan Tabo Blvd, NE. Funeral Services for Florencia J. Valtierra will be held on Wednesday at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church where the Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements by the Salazar & Sons Mortuary, 400 3rd St. SW.

Riley Jackson (Jack) Wicks was born on January 29, 1929 in Durham, NC to Norman and Mary Elizabeth Wicks. He passed away peacefully at home on February 28, 1999. Jack is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Norma; daughter, Linda; son, Michael and wife, Laura; sister-in-law, Betty Wicks and numerous other close relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Harold. In spite of many years of debilitating chronic health problems, Jack had a zest for life that was an example and inspiration to all who knew him. Friends may visit French Mortuary, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE, Thursday, March 4,10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. with services following at 12:00 noon, with Chaplain Lem Boyles officiating. Ida B. Alders, 79, a resident of Albuquerque, died Monday, February 28, 2000. She is survived by her daughter, Diann Messuri and husband, Phil; son, Phil Albers and wife, Veltia of Oklahoma; and six grandchildren. Services will be held and interment will take place at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Port Arthur, TX. Memorial contributions may be made to Grace Lutheran Church, 7550 Eubank NE 87122, or to the Bear Canyon Senior Center, 4645 Pitt NE 87111, both of which provided Bernice with joy, contentment and support. Steve A. Apodaca, age 41, passed away on Wednesday, March 1, 2000. He is survived by his parents, Claude Herrera and Mary Alice Herrera; his brother, Ed Herrera; a sister, Pamela Herrera; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews, and many other relatives. Steve was a 1978 graduate of Valley High School, and he enjoyed drawing with pen and ink. A Rosary will be recited this evening, 7:00 p.m., at the chapel of Alameda Mortuary. Dominica G. Barela
1902-2000
Dominica G. Barela, 97, a resident of Belen, passed away on Thursday, March 2, 2000. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sevedeo Barela; and her three brothers, Federico Griego, Beltran Griego, and Escolastico Griego. She is survived by her daughters, Sari Maria Sanchez and husband, Alfredo of Denver, CO, Stella Chavez and husband, Ray of Dallas, TX; her sons, Sevedeo Barela Jr. and wife, Garlene of Belen, Richard Barela and wife, Esther of Canoga Park, CA, Milton Barela and wife, Annabelle of Belen, and Charlie Barela and wife, Josie of Belen; 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Visitation will begin at 6:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church on Friday, March 3, 2000 with Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. also at Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church with burial to follow in the parish cemetery. Pallbearers will be her grandchildren. Arrangements by Riverside Funeral Home in Belen.

Lawrence Wilbur Barrett, 78, renowned western artist Will Barrett, and longtime resident of Albuquerque passed away February 22, 2000 at the Veterans Hospital. Mr. Barrett, a gifted artist since childhood spent his life immersed in his art. A Tank Commander in WWII serving under General Patton, he toured Germany and France. After the war he traveled the west and eventually settled in Albuquerque. Graduated with honors from the University of New Mexico in 1950. Will's art spoke of his love of horses and western life. He is survived by his sister Mary Lou Wactor of Tucson, AZ; many nieces and nephews; and hundreds of friends and art students. Services will be held on his birthday, Friday, March 3, 2000 at Holy Family Catholic Church, 562 Atrisco Dr. SW. Rosary at 9:00 a.m. Memorial Mass at 10:00 a.m.

James H. Benefield Jr., 73, a resident of Albuquerque since 1978, died Sunday, February 27, 2000. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Claoma "Clay" E. Benefield of Albuquerque; daughter, Dorothy Scott and husband, Bobby of Arkadelphia, AR; son, John L. Benefield and wife, Charlotte of El Dorado, AR; grandchildren, John and James Benefield; brothers, Jerry T. Benefield and wife, Sarah of Centre, AL and Stanley Benefield and wife, Connie of Waldorf, MD; sisters, Glenda Bishop and husband, Hewlett of Attalla, AL, Jean Noojin of San Antonio, TX, and Melvaline Williams and husband, Charles of South San Francisco, CA. Mr. Benefield attended Wheeler Business College in Birmingham, AL He was a core maker at a foundry in South San Francisco before serving in the U.S. Navy. After the Navy, he managed shoe stores and moved to Albuquerque as supervisor of the Shoe Fair and Brandy Shoe Stores. He was a member of the Lions Club in San Francisco and a member of the Gideons International in Albuquerque. Mr. Benefield was a member of Hoffmantown Baptist Church were he served over 20 years in the Visitors Center and Harvesters. Memorial services will be held Saturday, March 4, 2000, 10:30 a.m., at French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE, with Pastor Dale Coffing officiating. Interment of cremains will take place Monday, March 6, 2000, at Santa Fe National Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be Val McDannel, Glenn White, Bob Randall, Dyle Williams, Melvin Garner, and Phil Schroyer. Sarabeth "Gram B" Buchanan, 93, a resident of Albuquerque since 1949, died Friday, February 25, 2000. She is survived by her daughters, Erin Fulmer and husband, Joe and Sarabeth Counsellor; son, Bill Buchanan and wife, Sandra, all of Albuquerque; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. W.R. Buchanan. Rev. and Mrs. Buchanan were very involved with Baptist work, serving as Superintendent of Missions for the Central Baptist Association. Mrs. Buchanan was an educator for over 50 years, serving over 30 years at Atrisco Elementary School. Memorial services will be held Friday, 1:00 p.m., at Crestview Baptist Church, 301 Chama NE, with Rev. Eugene Ray, Rev. Marvin Capehart, Rev. David Coleman and Rev. Ron Mansdoerfer Jr. officiating. Harold H. Caruth Sr., 78, a resident of Albuquerque for the past 27 years, passed away on Wednesday, March 1, 2000. Harold was born August 9, 1921, the son of Henry and Elizabeth Springer Caruth in Charles City, Iowa. He had worked on heavy equipment in construction for 22 years before retiring. Harold served in the US Army during WWII. He was a member of the American Legion Post 118. Harold is survived by his wife, Connie Caruth of Albuquerque; six children, Dorothy Caruth of Rio Rancho, Linda Tharaldsen of Rio Rancho, Harold Caruth Jr. of Los Lunas, Roseann Engler of Tucson, AZ, David Caruth and Danny Caruth, both of Albuquerque; four sisters, Alice Grady of Mason City, IA, Shirley Andorf of Cedar Falls, IA, Ruby Cannelli of Waterloo, IA, and Irene Kepple of Charles City, IA; one brother, William Caruth of Chandler, AZ; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A visitation will be held on Saturday, March 4, 2000, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon followed by a service with the American Legion in the chapel of Vista Verde Mortuary, Sara Rd., at Meadowlark Ln., Rio Rancho. Arrangements by Vista Verde Mortuary.

Effie Martha Dean, born January 22,1923, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by family on Wednesday March 1, 2000. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Leo George Dean; and two daughters, Mary Ruth Dean of San Marcos, TX; Judy Ortega and husband, Arnold of Plano, TX; grandchildren, Freddie, David, Lynette, Vickie, Joseph and Bobby; great-grandchildren, Sierra, Seiko, Kyle, McKenna and Cody; brother, Frank Dibble and wife, Shirley of Albuquerque; and sister, Louise Parker of San Jon, NM; and many other relatives and friends. Effie was born in Quay, NM and settled in Albuquerque with her husband in 1957. In addition to raising her family here, she was a technician with Digital and retired in 1989. She was preceded in death by her parents, Homer Young Dibble and Lena Brassell Dibble; brothers, Eddie Dibble, Charlie Dibble and H.Y. Dibble, Jr.; and sisters, Mary Dibble and Frances Dalrymple. A Rosary will be held on Friday, March 3, 6:30 p.m., at the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish. Mary M. Dunn, wife of the late Leo A. Dunn, passed away in Laguna Beach, CA on February 26, 2000. She is survived by her children, Mary Angela Ordway and husband, William of Laguna Beach, Sheila P. Quigley and husband, Donald of Plano, TX, L. Kevin Dunn and wife, Mary of Albuquerque and John P. Dunn of Las Cruces. She is also survived by her brother, William Moreland of Albuquerque; as well as 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Born on October 5, 1917, she settled in Albuquerque in the late 1940s with her husband. In addition to raising her family here, Mrs. Dunn also operated a millinery-yarn shop in the southeast heights for a number of years. She was a member of Holy Ghost and Holy Rosary parishes. She relocated to Laguna Beach, CA in the fall of 1999. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 3, at Gate of Heaven Mausoleum, 7500 Paseo del Norte NE, with Fr. Antonio Mondragon, Celebrant. Inurnment will follow. Memorial contributions may be made to The Catholic Foundation, 2201 San Pedro NE, Bldg. 2, Ste. 211, Albuquerque, NM 87110.

Lorna "Lori" Fairman, 68, died on February 28, 2000 in Albuquerque. She was born in St. Louis, MO and moved to Albuquerque in 1958. With over 20 years of service, she retired from the Cigna Insurance Company in 1992. She loved spending time with her family at Bluewater Lake and was an avid football and auto racing fan. Her husband, Paul B. Fairman preceded her in death in 1993. A very loving mother, grandmother and friend, Lori is survived by her daughter Cheryl Schlecht and husband, Douglas of Albuquerque; two grandchildren, Jamie Schlecht and Jennifer Schlecht; and many loving friends, including Greg and Linda Duerre and their children, Dustin and Daniel. A Memorial service is scheduled for 6:00 p.m., Friday, March 3, 2000, at Chapel of Sandia Funeral Care, 7601 Wyoming Blvd. NE. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to The Animal Humane Association of New Mexico, 615 Virginia SE, Albuquerque, NM 87108. The family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Charles Karaian and Dr. Bruce Miller, who took wonderful care of Lori for many years.
