ROBERT "BOBBY" MONTOYA, 86, of Santa Fe died Thursday. He was born in Santa Fe on Jan. 16, 1917, to the late Abel and Bessie Montoya. He was best known for his successful furniture store, Montoya Furniture. He started working in Santa Fe furniture stores after school and during the summer when he was about 10 years old. His father was manager of the used furniture and hardware departments of Livingston's Furniture, and he found his son a part-time job packing regional goods shipped all over the country. As his father moved up in the furniture business, he eventually opened a store with his brothers, Louis and Celso Montoya. After a few years at Livingston's, the Montoyas joined the Broome's sales staff in 1935 and stayed there about 10 years. In 1945, Bobby's father and two uncles opened Montoya's Furniture on San Francisco Street across from Big Jo Lumber, where the Hilton Inn now stands. The business prospered downtown, but the city bought the Montoya property after 11 years, and the furniture store was forced to move to an outlying neighborhood behind Skaggs, where it stayed and flourished. Carrying on the family tradition, Montoya's son, Abie II, lent a hand in the shop and operated Abie's Upholstery in the portion of the store on Camino De Los Marquez. His daughter, Tessie Garcia, was a salesperson, as well as his sister, Jennie Roybal. After 47 years, Bobby decided to retire and close up shop. Robert's best quote was, "I learned everything I know from my dad."
He was preceded by his loving wife, Dolores Montoya; and son, Abie Montoya.
He is survived by his daughter, Tessie M. Garcia; sister, Jennie Roybal; 18 grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday at Berardinelli Family Chapel. A rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. at St. Francis Cathedral. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at noon Monday at St. Francis Cathedral. Burial will follow at Rosario Cemetery.

At around age 12, he moved to Detroit, where he graduated from high school. About 1956-57 he was appointed Justice of the Peace in the Ranchos de Taos area, where he was well liked and considered a good and fair judge, but he was defeated in the next election.
