William (Bill) D. Covington, 74, a resident of Belen, passed away at the VA Hospital on Tuesday, April 25, 2000. He was a member of the Belen Christian Church. Bill graduated from Clovis High School and then served in the United States Navy during WWII from 1943-1948. After the service he attended Highlands University in Las Vegas, NM. Bill then worked for U.S. West Communications, retiring in 1983 after 35 years of outstanding service. Bill was also a member of the Telephone Pioneers. Bill is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Joan of the family home in Belen; his five children, Debbie Goss and her husband, Wes of Sandia Park, NM, Jack and his wife, Pam of Rio Rancho, Jeannie Moore and her husband, James of Celina, TX, Sharon Walker and her husband, Scott and Paula Eubank and her husband, Rick of Los Chavez, NM; his 14 grandchildren, Karen, Kevin, Robert, Amanda, Michael, Cindy, Steven, Derek, Sarah, Brittany, David, Jessica, Olivia, and Sydney; three brothers, Ross and his wife, Jimmie, Albin and his wife, Fran, Tom and his wife, Nancy; one sister, Marie Studstill and her husband, Jim. Lawrence (Larry) Dawes, 63, lifelong resident of Albuquerque, died Saturday, April 22, 2000. He is survived by his sons, Ronald W. Dawes and wife, Lisa; Richard L. Dawes and wife, Katherine, all of Danville, IN; daughter, Donna McCarty of Las Vegas, NV; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brothers, Ronald O. Dawes and wife, Marie of Moriarty; Jack L. Young and wife, Pat of Corrales; and sisters, Phyllis I. Warner and husband, John and Shirley M. McNeal, all of Albuquerque. Else "Oma" Dunkel, 95, beloved Mother, Grandmother, and Great-Grandmother, was called home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 26, 2000. Her fervent prayers were answered. She is survived by her daughter, Rosemarie Fagan; son-in-law, Phillip Fagan; granddaughters, Audrey; former grandson-in-law, Robert; and great-grandchildren, Samantha, Christopher, and Melanie. She lived a full life that she completely devoted to God and her family. She will be missed forever. A private service will be held for family members only in fulfillment of her final wishes. Richard Neal Eisenhour, born February 2, 1928, died April 23, 2000. Richard grew up in South Bend, Indiana; graduated from South Bend Central High School; and served in the US Army from 1947-48. He married Silva Mae Snyder in 1955. They had three children, Amy, Alan and Martin while living on a small farm in Plymouth, Indiana. After Richard was involved in a car accident and could no longer farm, he worked at Studebaker, and several other jobs. In 1962, he started Eisenhour Siding, installing Aluminum siding and other home improvements in Plymouth and the surrounding area. In 1987, he was divorced from Silva and married Diana Schellenberg and moved to Brookston, Indiana, where they lived until 1997. They then moved to Albuquerque, where they lived until Diana's passing in 1999. Richard remained in Albuquerque and suffered a broken pelvis from a fall in April, 2000, and passed away on Easter Sunday. He is survived by three children, Amy, Alan and Martin; and two grandchildren, Kyanne and Kameron. Richard enjoyed Folk and Bluegrass music festivals and hot air balloons. We will miss him. Memorial services will be held Friday, April 28, 7:00 p.m., at the Unitarian Universalist Westside Church, 1650 Abrazo NE, in Rio Rancho.
Alta Curry Hammond, January 17, 1914-April 24, 2000, a long time New Mexico resident started a new journey on Monday. Born in Alva, Oklahoma of A.A. and Golden Curry, she was blessed to be one of twelve children (including three sets of twins). She grew up in Clayton, NM, but like most of the family, she left the area for other places. She helped out in the WWII effort as a "Rosie the Riviter" in California and later returned to New Mexico where she became a nurse and helped many families care for their children. This is how she met her husband, W. Ernest Hammond, who preceded her in death in 1988. She is survived by her children, Mary Lynne Brunner and husband, Melvin of Gallup, NM and Ray W. Hammond and wife, Bonnie of Albuquerque; three brothers, Foy M. Curry and wife, Laralee of Albuquerque, Ray Curry and wife, Billie of Flora Vista, NM and Roy Curry and wife, Nancy of Albuquerque (the latter two being twins); grandson, Brant C. Brunner of Mesa, AZ, granddaughter, Caitlin Ashley Hammond of Albuquerque; and countless nieces and nephews scattered throughout the western United States. Each and every one was very important to her, all in their own special way. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Women's Golf Association at the Albuquerque Country Club. She enjoyed everything from riding a horse to playing golf, bridge and in recent years "Skip-Bo ". She leaves behind so many dear friends that it would take another column to mention them all-suffice it to say she loved you all dearly. Her family and close friend, Steven Loveless were with her at her all important moment. She enjoyed giving more than receiving and in that spirit please give to a charity of your choice in lieu of flowers. Josephine Valdez Jaramillo, 83, longtime resident of Albuquerque, and previously of Las Vegas, died peacefully on April 14 in the home of her nephew, Michael Padilla. Her beloved husband, Leo, to whom she was married for 43 years, preceded her in death. She was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church and spent decades as a teacher for parochial schools, always dedicated to her students, and as a member of various Catholic organizations. Although Josephine had no children, she was a devoted Aunt to her many nieces and nephews. She is survived by her special nephew, Michael Padilla and wife, Peggy of Bosque Farms and their six children who cared for her in her last years; sister, Marie Cecilia Padilla and husband, Ray of Las Vegas; brother, Felix Valdez and wife, Elna of Edmonds, WA; aunt, Carmen Fernandez of Santa Fe; nephew, Robert Padilla and wife, Leora and children of Albuquerque; grandniece, Pamela Rodriguez and daughter, Daniella of Monterey, CA; nephew, Jerry Padilla and wife, Linda and children of Albuquerque; niece, Patricia Skrinar and husband, Tom and children of Tacoma, WA; niece, Marie Villanueva and husband, Joe and children of Albuquerque; niece, Charlene Maestas and husband, Fred and children of Santa Rosa; niece, Margaret Ann Bailey and husband, Robert and children of Kemp, TX; nephews, Tom, Fred and niece, Bella Enebeckler of California. Filemon F. Lucero, 73, a longtime resident of Pena Blanca, died Wednesday, April 20, 2000. He is survived by his daughter, Judy and husband, Pat Romero of Santa Fe; his son, Anthony Lucero of Santa Fe; a sister, Rita Goske of Pena Blanca, NM; brothers, Benigno Lucero of Bakersfield, CA and Ben Lucero and wife, Petra of Santa Fe; granchildren, Alisha, David and Daniel Romer of Santa Fe; nieces, Yvette Goske de Chavez and husband, David of Pena Blanca, Corina Goske of Pena Blanca, Sara Lucero of Santa Fe, and Maryann Rogers and Arlene Medina of Bakersfield, CA; nephews, Greg Mares of Phoenix, AZ, Bernard Lucero of Padadena, CA, Randy Lucero of Santa Fe, Steve Mares of Burbank, CA, and Phillip Lucero of Maryland; nine great-nieces and six great-nephews; seven great-great nieces and nephews; a special aunt, Pablita Hurtado of Santa Fe; friend and companion, Francisco Boyd of Pena Blanca; and many cousins and friends. Filemon was a veteran of WWII, serving in the Air Force. He retired from Civil Service at the Veteran's Hospital in Albuquerque in 1969. Christopher Travis Parsons-Maes, 2 months and 7 days, passed away April 24 at his home in McIntosh. He is survived by his parents, Danny and Elizabeth Maes; three sisters, Bianca, Mariah and Kasandra; and one brother, Aaron; his maternal grandparents, Ray and Cindi Parson of Jemez Springs; paternal grandparents, Albert Maes and Ramona Castillo of Willard, NM; maternal great-grandparents, Ruby Parsons, Ruth and Doyle Dobbs of Albuquerque; paternal great-grandparents, Casianita Gonzales; his aunt and uncle, Kenneth and Joanna Claxton of Seattle, WA. Tom G. Pineda, 76, an Albuquerque resident since 1957, died Monday, April 24, 2000. He is survived by his son, Raymond Pineda and wife, Margaret; daughter, Mary Ann Coalson and husband Timothy, all of Albuquerque; grandsons, Anthony Pineda and wife, Sara of Cedar Grove, NM, Michael Pineda, and wife, Tracy, of Los Lunas; brothers, Ladislao Pineda and wife, Devon of Trinidad, CO, Gilbert Pineda and wife, Helen of Fresno, CA; several nieces, nephews, friends including his special friends at the Village at Alameda where he resided. His wife, Carmen F. Pineda, preceded him in death in 1997. Mr. Pineda was a barber at the NCO Club for 40 years and had served as manager of several of the barbershops at Kirtland AFB. Tom developed many relationships with patrons who came to his shops, and he never met a stranger. He worked as a volunteer over the years by giving free haircuts at the VA Hospital and other hospitals and most recently he served as a volunteer leading social activities at the Village at Alameda. Josephine Schnepp, age 76, passed away April 24, 2000, ending her battle with Amyloidosis. Born in Holbeach, England, she came to Albuquerque in 1943, where she met and married Floyd A. Schnepp who preceded her in death in 1994 after nearly 50 years of marriage. Her cremated remains will be taken to reside with those of her beloved husband at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe. She is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Gushard and husband, Jerry; grandson, Wade Greer and wife, Vanessa; as well as many friends whose lives she touched by her love, kindness, joy and generosity of spirit. Jackie I. Smith, 69, and a resident of Albuquerque since 1941, passed away on Monday, April 24, after a short illness. She is survived by her husband of 30 years, Ron Smith; children, Cathi Brunacini of Albuquerque, Ray Brunacini Jr. of Delta, CO, Mike Brunacini of Albuquerque, Jennie Canterbury and her husband, Jeff of Aurora, CO, and Lori Brunacini of Albuquerque; and grandchildren, Jessica Brunacini of Albuquerque, Devin Brunacini of Colorado and Ariel and Chloe Canterbury of Aurora, CO. Thomas Daniel Stromberg, born May 5, 1953 in Albuquerque, died Monday, April 17, 2000, in a traffic accident in San Mateo, CA. Tom's charismatic personality brought spirit, creativity, adventure, and a sense of fun to both his family, and hundreds of devoted friends in San Mateo and San Francisco CA, and Seattle, WA. Tom leaves behind a distinguished career in Information Systems, most recently serving as CIO for Walmart.com. He held similar positions in banking and retail services, but more than anything, Tom was a totally dedicated family man. Tom leaves behind Louise, his beloved wife of 17 years; his sons, John and Michael; and his daughter, Katherine. No child was without a playmate if Tom was nearby, and the Stromberg home was a constant center of action, sports and play, always open to friends and visitors. Tom attended St. Pius X High School and the University of New Mexico. Tom is also survived by his parents, Patricia and Robert; sisters, Mary Ann and Marcella (Albuquerque); brother, Mark (Carmel Valley, CA), Peter and James (Albuquerque), Paul (Portland, OR); and numerous nieces and nephews. Kathleen J. Thompson, 83, a resident of Albuquerque for 55 years, went to be with the Lord, Tuesday, April 25, 2000. She is survived by her daughters, Patricia Donner and husband, Jack and Betty Bruskas and husband, Tom; granddaughter, Karen Britt and husband, Craig; grandsons, David Bruskas and wife, Kara, Bill Bruskas and wife, Buffy; nine great-grandchildren; as well as nieces, nephews, and cousins. God used her mightily within her own family and her church family. Her family is forever grateful that she left them such a godly heritage. She faithfully served at First Presbyterian Church 50 years as a greeter, Sunday School teacher, deacon, and elder. Clark Ethan Welch, age 70, passed away at his home in Elephant Butte, New Mexico on Sunday, April 23, 2000. Mr. Welch was born on February 17, 1930, in Clarksfield, Ohio, the son of Daniel Harry Welch and Lillie May (Bartow) Welch. A graduate of Elyria High School in Elyria, Ohio; he also attended Bowling Green University and Kent State University in Ohio. A former resident of Albuquerque from 1969 to 1993, many will remember Mr. Welch was associated with the Warren School Supply from 1978 to 1985. He was an Educator in the Bernalillo Public School System, working at both the Algodones and the Placitas Schools for eight years. After his retirement as a teacher, Mr. Welch also worked for the NM Human Services Office in the Southeast Heights (on Williams St.) in Albuquerque from February, 1986 to September, 1992. Upon moving to Elephant Butte in 1993, Mr. Welch worked for the T or C Office of Human Services Office for three years, where he retired as Supervisor. He is survived by a sister, Cora Fortman of Amherst, OH; two nephews, Bob Fortman of Granbury, TX and Billy Fortman of Amherst, OH; and by his close friends, Dean and Ruth Mason, Louis Tonn and Jacques; his beloved Bichon-Frise of Elephant Butte. Peggy McCormick Akin Wilkison was born October 22, 1939, in Hobbs, New Mexico, the 3rd child and 2nd daughter of Don McCormick and Dorothy Walker McCormick. Peggy died in her home on Easter Sunday, April 23, 2000, after a brave and dignified battle with cancer. She is survived by her loving husband, David Wilkison; and his mother, Mary Wilkison of the family home; and sons, Don (D.J.) Akin of Scottsdale, AZ and Scott Akin of Albuquerque, all of whom she was very proud. She is also survived by her former husband, Jackson G. Akin; her children by marriage, Emily Akin Sattler of Houston, TX, Stephan Akin of Dallas, TX, Laurie Wilkison of Arlington, VA and Jennie Wilkison of Denver, CO; her brother, Michael McCormick and wife, Wanda of McAllen, TX; her sisters, Mary Skavaril and husband, Russ of Columbus, OH, Maureen Ashley and husband, Everett of Tulsa, OK, Monica O'Reilly and husband, Mel and Margo McCormick and husband, Ranne Miller, all of Albuquerque; and step-mother, Dorothy Cox McCormick, also of Albuquerque. Peggy graduated from Carlsbad High School in 1957. She attended Creighton University, the University of New Mexico, and graduated from Gonzaga University. On April 25th of 2000, Richard D. Wolfe Jr., 47, has taken his last call for his last train. Rick was born on June 23, 1952 in Gallup. He graduated from Belen High School and then served in the United States Airforce from 1971-1975 and hired out on the Railroad in 1970. He left many dear friends, railroaders, bowlers, and golfing buddies. God called him while he was trying to catch that big fish. We love you Rick and will carry you in our hearts always. Sister Mary Amidea Wrzesinksi, 67, a resident of Rio Rancho, passed away on Monday, April 24, 2000 in the Felician Sister's Convent. Sister Amidea served the Lord and His people as a woman religious for 48 years. Of these, she spent 44 years teaching elementary school students in Oklahoma, Nebraska and Texas. For 13 of those years she was both principal and teacher. During the final year of her life, Sister Amidea tutored elementary students at St. Felix Pantry in Rio Rancho. She is fondly remembered by those she taught and worked with as an excellent and dedicated educator. She was generous with her time, possessed a great sense of humor, and faced difficulties with determination and patience. Sister Amidea was preceded in death by her parents, Nicholas Wrzesinski and Josephine Syzdek Wrzesinski; a sister, Sister Mary Josetta Wrzesinski, also a Felician Sister; and two brothers, Albert and Simon Wrzesinski. She is survived by two sisters, Julia Lehoski of Pearland, Texas and Mary Johnston of Bedford, Texas; four brothers, Stash Wrezesinski of Ft. Worth, Texas, Ted Wrzesinski of Berwyn, Illinois, Roman Wrzesinski of Ft. Worth, Texas and Johnny Wrzesinski of Waxahachie, Texas. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Rio Rancho on Friday, April 28, 2000 at 10:00 a.m. with the Rev. Cecil Kleber, OFM as the celebrant. Interment will follow in the Gate of Heaven Catholic Cemetery. Arrangements by Vista Verde Mortuary.
