Sister Victoriana Montoya
In her 75th year as a Sister of Loretto, Sister Victoriana, 95, celebrated her Diamond Jubilee Sunday morning, just before she passed away. Sister was born in Bernalillo in 1903 and was received in the Loretto order in 1924. Sister Victoriana lived and taught in New Mexico and El Paso for all but four months of her 75 years as a teacher and volunteer. She retired to Nazareth Hall in 1990, but continued doing doll making and volunteering. She is survived by her sister, Veronica Hall in Albuquerque; and several nephews and nieces. She will be missed by the Nurses and Staff at Nazareth Hall and by the Sisters of Loretto. Rosary will be in Nazareth Chapel on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. and Mass on Wednesday in the Nazareth Chapel at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery. Sister Victoriana Montoya had wanted to live to celebrated her 75th anniversary as a Sister of Loretto. On Sunday, April 25, Sister enjoyed a ceremony in her honor and thanked and offered her own congratulation to the group. Minutes after arriving back in her room she quietly took her last breath.

Luciana (Lucy) Narvaiz, age 88, passed away on Sunday night, April 25, 1999, after a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her children, Teresita (Terry) Romero and John David Narvaiz. Lucy was a lifetime resident of Agua Fria Village and San Ysidro Church. She was very active throughout her lifetime in numerous organizations. She was a 4-H Club leader for over 20 years and volunteered her time to help non-English speaking people become fluent in the English language. She enjoyed teaching English and Spanish to young and old. In 1990, she was appointed a Point-of-Light by President George Bush because of her numerous volunteer hours. Education was a big part of Lucy's life. She went back to high school in the 1950's and received her high school diploma. At age 68, she returned to school and at age 74 she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology, cum laude, from the College of Santa Fe. She was fortunate to have traveled to Spain and Mexico. She had a deep appreciation for her heritage and her culture. Her love of her heritage promoted her to organize a group of senior citizens to write their life stories for publication. Before her death, she completed her own life story and published it for her family on her birthday as a birthday gift from herself. She was loved by many and will be greatly missed. She is survived by her husband, Dan Narvaiz; children, Gloria Narvaiz and Danny Narvaiz. She is also survived by her grandchildren and their spouses, Ronnie Romero, Cindy Carrillo, Rosalie Doyle, Sandra Pacheco, Dorie Lopez, Eric Romero, Carol Trimborn, Elaine Romero and Jennifer Narvaiz; numerous great-grandchildren; sisters, Carmen Ortiz and Caroline Quintana; and many, many friends and relatives. Visitation will begin on Wednesday, April 28, 2:00 p.m., at Berardinelli Family Funeral Chapel. Lucy will then be taken to San Ysidro Church where visitation will continue at 6:30 p.m. and a Rosary will be prayed for her at 7:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, April 29, 10:00 a.m., at San Ysidro Church. Interment will follow at Agua Fria Cemetery. Arrangements are pending under the direction of Berardinelli Family Funeral Service, 1399 Luisa, Santa Fe, 984-8600.

Mrs. Charlotte Ronquillo, 84, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away on April 27, 1999. Mrs. Ronquillo is survived by her two sons, John Ronquillo and wife, Betty and Ken Ronquillo and wife, Carmen; special nephew, Joe N. (Snowy) Sanchez; grandchildren, Linda, John, Mark, Anna, Paula, Oscar David, Alfred, Dennis, Denise, Richard and Kathryn; 17 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny P. Ronquillo; a son, Nolasco Oscar Ronquillo; and a daughter-in-law, Jeanette Ronquillo. Mrs. Ronquillo was a member of the Catholic Church. A Rosary will be recited Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. in the Gabaldon Memorial Chapel, 1000 Old Coors Rd. SW, with visitation after 6:30 p.m. Deacon Tibo Chavez, reciting. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday morning at 9:00 a.m. at St. Anne's Catholic Church, 1400 Arenal SW, with visitation after 8:30 a.m. Father Dan Farris, Celebrant. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers will be John Michael Ronquillo, Mark S. Ronquillo, Richard David Ronquillo, Oscar David Ronquillo, Alfred Ronquillo and Peter Auh. Mr. Camilo E. Sanchez Jr. died Monday at Albuquerque at the age of 55. Mr. Sanchez is survived by his mother, Della R. Sanchez; and brothers, Randy Sanchez and Charles R. Sanchez. Funeral services for Mr. Sanchez will be held on Thursday at the Holy Ghost Catholic Church where the Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at the Belen Cemetery. Visitation for Mr. Sanchez will be held on Wednesday from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in the mortuary chapel. A Rosary will be recited on Wednesday evening, 7:00 p.m., at the Salazar & Sons Mortuary, 400 3rd St. SW.

Thelma M. Smith, 88, a resident of Albuquerque since 1959, died Sunday, April 25, 1999. She is survived by her son, George J. Smith; daughters, Marquerite Bishop and Catherine Griffin; sons, Ken Smith, Don Smith, and Richard Smith, all of Albuquerque; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Rosary will be recited Thursday, April 29, 1999, 7:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE. Mass will be celebrated Friday, April 30, 1999, 9:00 a.m., at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, 11401 Indian School Rd. NW. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Mrs. Ione Gossett Vogel, 91, a resident of Albuquerque since 1944, died Sunday, April 25, 1999 after a lengthy illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence F. Vogel. Private graveside services were held at Santa Fe National Cemetery. French Mortuary, 1111 University Blvd. NE.

Raymond Arias, a loving 39 year old dad, son, brother, uncle, cousin and friend, went to his final resting place on April 25, 2000 in Roswell. He was born on March 13, 1961 in Roswell, he shared most of his life with Darlene Martinez of Santa Fe. During his brief stay here on earth he was blessed with two sons, Raymond Anthony Arias of Santa Fe and Jimmie Ray Arias of Fort Sumner, NM. Raymond leaves behind many loved ones, his mother, Nancy Palladino and husband, Jerry of Albuquerque; brother, Peter Arias and his wife, Melissa of Mansfield, TX; and sister, Teresa Arias and fiance, Bruce Torres of Santa Fe; his father, Raymond Arias and Ramona Garcia of Albuquerque; half-brothers, Johnny Arias, Leonard R. Arias, Leonard J. Arias; step-brother, James Garcia; and step-sister, Rosemary Garcia. Lord, you have taken Raymond to be with you now, we will cherish the memories we have, we ask that you watch over him and keep him for us until we meet again, in the name of your son. Amen. Edna Pearl Bell, 88, a resident of Albuquerque since 1937, born December 22, 1911 in Hobart, OK, died Tuesday, April 25, 2000. She is survived by her daughters, Berneice Gardner and husband, Bruce of Thoreau, Ella V. Haralson and husband, Ernest, and Pearl Winters and husband, Steve, all of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Jacqui Gardner of Thoreau, Keith Gardner and wife, Jeana of Clarksville, TN, James C. Haralson and wife, Kathryn of T or C, Barbara Day and husband, Brett, Chris Haralson and wife, Deanna, Doni Winters, Stephen Winters and wife, Angela, Bonnie Foreman and husband, Richard, and Mary Winters, all of Albuquerque; and fourteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Cecil Bell in 1976. Mrs. Bell managed the snack bar at Albuquerque City Hall for several years. She was devoted to her Christian faith. She attended 1st Baptist Church of Alameda, where she taught Sunday school. Services will be held Friday, 10:00 a.m., at 1st Baptist Church of Alameda, 8818 2nd St. NW, with Pastor Marvin Capehart and Rev. Bruce Gardner officiating. Leamon H. "Lee" Graves, 80, of Albuquerque, passed away April 27, 2000. Mr. Graves was born in Springfield, Massachusetts; was a brick mason; and a member of Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Corrales. He served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of WWII, serving in the Battle of the Bulge. Mr. Graves is survived by his daughter, Janice Mahan of Winter Park, FL; son, Glen Graves of Arlington, MA; granddaughter, Marnie Meyer of Winter Park, FL; and one great-grandchild, Nathan. Alta Curry Hammond, January 17, 1914-April 24, 2000, a long time New Mexico resident started a new journey on Monday. Born in Alva, Oklahoma of A.A. and Golden Curry, she was blessed to be one of twelve children (including three sets of twins). She grew up in Clayton, NM, but like most of the family, she left the area for other places. She helped out in the WWII effort as a "Rosie the Riviter" in California and later returned to New Mexico where she became a nurse and helped many families care for their children. This is how she met her husband, W. Ernest Hammond, who preceded her in death in 1988. She is survived by her children, Mary Lynne Brunner and husband, Melvin of Gallup, NM and Ray W. Hammond and wife, Bonnie of Albuquerque; three brothers, Foy M. Curry and wife, Laralee of Albuquerque, Ray Curry and wife, Billie of Flora Vista, NM and Roy Curry and wife, Nancy of Albuquerque (the latter two being twins); grandson, Brant C. Brunner of Mesa, AZ, granddaughter, Caitlin Ashley Hammond of Albuquerque; and countless nieces and nephews scattered throughout the western United States. Each and every one was very important to her, all in their own special way. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Women's Golf Association at the Albuquerque Country Club. She enjoyed everything from riding a horse to playing golf, bridge and in recent years "Skip-Bo ". She leaves behind so many dear friends that it would take another column to mention them all-suffice it to say she loved you all dearly. Her family and close friend, Steven Loveless were with her at her all important moment. She enjoyed giving more than receiving and in that spirit please give to a charity of your choice in lieu of flowers. Ivory Deon Johnson, 27, passed away Sunday, April 23, 2000, at Rehoboth McKinley Christian Hospital in Gallup. Visitation will be Friday afternoon, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at Baca's Funeral Chapel, where the Prayer Vigil will begin at 7:00 p.m. that evening. Funeral services will be Saturday, April 29 at 10:00 a.m. in the morning at Baca's Funeral Chapel with Fr. David Bentley, Pastor of Holy Family Catholic Church, officiating. Concluding services and interment will follow at Mt. View Cemetery with Veterans Honors by Grant County Veterans Organizations. Ivory was born October 1, 1972 in Dallas County, Texas to Charles and Charles Etta Johnson. He was a graduate of Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota, where he received his Bachelors Degree in Political Science in May, 1999. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in Kuwait during Desert Storm. Ivory was currently sales manager at Palm Harbor Homes in Albuquerque. He is survived by his wife, Meisha Catherine Seats Johnson of Rio Rancho; his son, Dillon Ivory Johnson of Phoenix, AZ; his unborn son, Darrel Deon Johnson of Rio Rancho; his mother, Charles Etta Johnson of Seattle, WA; three brothers, Clifford Johnson of Dallas, TX, Jimron Johnson, his wife, Brenda, Galen Johnson and his wife, Amanda, all of Seattle, WA; one sister, Laterria Johnson of Seattle, WA; his in-laws, Darrel and Cathy Seats of Deming; brothers-in-law, Terry Seats and Kasey Seats of Deming, Kris Seats of Coolidge, AZ; a sister-in-law, Lisa LoPresti of Whitestone, NY; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Johnson and his maternal grandmother, Evangelist Charlzine B. Davidson. Annie Lovato, 86, died in her sleep on Tuesday, April 25, 2000. She will truly be missed by those of us who love her. She is survived by her son, Juan, daughter-in-law, Janie, grandson, Mark; her brother, Robert; and sister, Albina. Special thanks to Rickie, her loving caretaker. Mrs. Estella Lucero, 91, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away on April 27, 2000 at home with her loved ones at her side. Mrs. Lucero was the beloved wife of 57 years to Mr. Luis Lucero. She is also survived by her daughter, Mrs. Adelia Martinez and husband, Chano; three sisters, Elvira Gonzales, Mary Lucero and Agneda Lucero; one brother, Juan Lucero and wife, Avelina; three grandchildren, Joseph Martinez, Nathaniel Valdez and Marisa Valdez; special friend and caregiver, Amidita Contreras; several nieces, nephews and friends. Mrs. Lucero was a member of the Catholic Church. John DeWitt (Jack) McKee, age 80, a resident of Socorro since 1959, passed away Wednesday, April 26, 2000 at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque. He is survived by his wife, Jeannette of Socorro; brother, Donald P. McKee of Kerrville, TX; sister-in-law, Helen McKee of Philadelphia, PA; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Juan Mendez, 69, a lifelong resident of New Mexico, died Thursday, April 27, 2000. He is survived by his children, Don P. Mendez of Portland, OR, Alisa A. Kauffman and husband, Greg of Albuquerque, John T. Mendez of Superior, CO, and Michael J. Mendez of San Francisco, CA; former spouse, Carol A. Cassell-Mendez of Atlanta, GA; grandsons, Justin Kauffman, and Max Kauffman, both of Albuquerque; sisters, Ernestina Corrasco of Rio Rancho, and Emilia Castillo and husband, Fernando of El Paso, TX; former spouse, Elizabeth Wills of Albuquerque; and stepsons, Neil Christensen and wife, Lisette of St. Louis, MO, and Thayer Christensen of San Diego, CA. Cresenciana M. Montano, age 85, beloved mother, grandmother, and sister, has departed this world to join our Lord Jesus Christ, Thursday, April 27, 2000. Mrs. Montano was a lifelong resident of New Mexico; an Albuquerque resident since 1957; and a parishioner of San Felipe de Neri Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roque Montano. She is survived by her loving children, son, Bailon Montano; three daughters, Della Garcia and husband, Orlando, Lucella Gonzales and husband, Rey, Tommie Blea and husband, Bernie; two grandsons that she raised, Bailon Montano Jr. and Roque Montano; and ten other grandchildren, Orlando, Annabel, Daniel, John, Lorenzo, Michelle, Jennifer, Monica, Lorencita and Rey Jr.; and eight great-grandchildren. Also surviving are one brother, Alfonso Manzanares and wife, Lilia; two sisters, Loretta Flores and Margarita Lovato. She will be greatly missed by her loving family. John James Mound III, died on April 25, 2000. He was an especially loving son to Jay and Kathy, and adored by Tyler, his little brother. His biggest desire was to be able to return home to live with his family and be able to interact with all members of his extended family. He was a talented boy and aspired to resume full participation in his education, employment, and live an ordinary life. He had a passion for nature and all of its beauty and loved to feel the wind in his face. Jon was a gifted athlete, especially in basketball and soccer. Always a team player, he displayed sportsmanship, win or lose. Seldom has there been a child who was loved so much by so many in so short a life. Loving survivors include his parents, John "Jay" James Mound II and Kathryn Lynn Mound; brother, Tyler Marcial Montgomery Mound; great-grandmother, Vina Atencio; great-great-aunt, Vangie Huchamala and husband, Archie and family; grandparents, John "Jack" James Mound I and wife, Betty, Suzann Trout, Kelo Martinez and Antoinette Sanchez, and Anna Belle Miller and husband, Rod. He is also survived by aunts, Karen "Marie" Mound and daughter, Lindsay, Shannon Bonness and husband, Rik and sons, Eric and Alex, Suzy Mound and son, Nathan, Deanna Firebaugh and husband, Jeffery and children, Erika and Hunter, and Karen Kelly and daughter, Kristina; and an uncle, Lee Kittell and wife, Frances and children, Callen and Heidi. Surviving great-aunts include Carol Perkins and husband, Marvin and children, Ron and Tammy, and the children of Elizabeth Atencio, who preceded John James in death, Eugenia, Joseph and Tessie, Rosemary De La O and husband, Leo, Josie Counce and husband, Dwayne and children, Chuck, Michael and Joni. Surviving great-uncles include Archie Atencio and children, Jessica and Thomas, Melvin Atencio and children, Anthony, Melanie, and Matthew, Leonard Atencio and wife, Denise and daughter, Jamie, Delfie Atencio and children, Michael, Delouise and Andrew, Johnny Atencio and wife, Nelly and children, Scott and Robinson, Joseph Atencio and wife, Karen and children, Jolene and Matthew, Anthony Atencio, Michael Atencio and children, Michael J. and Aaron, and Dick Mound and wife, Carol and sons, Rick and Sean. Also surviving is a special friend, Serina Robinette and many special friends whose lives were touched by John. Charles E. Nieman, age 76, died Monday afternoon, April 25, 2000, at his home in Santa Fe. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mercedes; brother, Larry B. Nieman; and his sister, Helen A. Nieman. Mr. Nieman was born April 11, 1924 in Trinidad, CO, the son of the late Charles A. and Dora (Yuszkiewich) Nieman. He was a lifelong resident of New Mexico. A graduate of Santa Fe High School (Class of 1942), Mr. Nieman served in the Pacific Theater in the US Navy during World War II. Returning from the war, he joined the Mountain Bell Telephone and Telegraph Company. He ultimately retired from the company as a supervisor in 1976, following the death of his beloved wife, Mercedes. He is survived by his four children, Charles L. of Kent, OH, Michael B. of Albuquerque, Karen A. Aragon of Parker, CO, and Randall T. of Santa Fe. He is also survived by seven grandchildren. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Monday, May 1, 10:00 a.m., at the Blessed Sacrament Chapel at St. Francis Cathedral. Interment will be private and will be accomplished at a later date when all family members can be present. Flora (Baba) Nolasco, age 57, beloved and devoted mother, daughter, sister and friend, was called home to be with the Lord, Thursday, April 27, 2000. Baba, as everyone knew her, was born on July 17, 1942 in Albuquerque; she was a lifelong resident of Alameda; a parishioner of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, and a member of the American Legion, Post 69, Lady's Auxiliary. Baba was a caring, helpful and fun person, who enjoyed family get-togethers and friends. She was preceded in death by her mother, Maria Nolasco. She is survived by her two loving children, Elisa (Lisa) Nolasco and Samuel (Sammy) Nolasco, both of the family home; her father, Meliton Nolasco also of the family home; two sisters, Dorothy Santillanes and husband, Andrew of Albuquerque and Rosemary Paez and husband, Rey of Belen; four brothers, Rudy Nolasco and wife, Ramona of Albuquerque, Meliton Nolasco Jr. and wife, Rosemarie, Florence Nolasco and Armida, Bill Nolasco and wife, Diane, all of California; two very special friends who stood by her side, Jeanette Saiz and Darlene LeChuga; numerous nieces, nephews and a host of other friends. She will be greatly missed by her loving family and those who loved and knew her. On behalf of the family, sincere appreciation is extended to the Hospice Caregivers, good friends, Jeanette and Darlene for all the loving care and support given during Baba's illness. Friends and family may visit today, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., in the chapel of Garcia Mortuary. A Rosary will be recited this evening, 7:00 p.m., at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10:00 a.m. also at the church. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Tim Paez, Timothy Paez, Joe Paez, Jeff Johnson, Joe Sandoval and Mark Nolasco. Honorary bearers will be Greg Nolasco and George Tafoya. Funeral services are in the care of Garcia Mortuary, 717 Stover Ave. SW, 243-5222.

Gailya "Gail" Orona, 64, a resident of Albuquerque since 1997, died Wednesday, April 26, 2000. She is survived by her husband, Rick Orona of Albuquerque; children, Timothy Mark Castleberry of Ridgecrest, CA, Melody Sedillo and husband, Frank of Santa Fe, Kitty Romero and husband, Gabe of Rio Rancho, Becky Hall and husband, Doug of Memphis, TN, Joseph Castleberry and wife, Ginger of Oklahoma City, OK, and Nancy Jones and husband, Jeff of Oklahoma City, OK; ten grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and brothers, Jim Smith and wife, Kay of Cabot, AR, and John Smith and wife, Lena of Santa Fe. Mrs. Orona was preceded in death by her daughter, Susan Gale. Services will be held in Waxahachie, TX at a later date. Interment will take place at Mountain Peak Cemetery, Mountain Peak, Texas. French Mortuary, 1111 University Blvd. NE.
