John Edward (J.E.) Cassel, 89, born August 28, 1911 in Maryville, MO, died Tuesday, May 1, 2001. Ed was a resident of Albuquerque in 1935 and from 1943 to date; he previously resided in Gallup (1936-37), Hobbs (1937-39) and Santa Fe (1939-43). He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Clara Cassel; sons, Bill of Albuquerque and Rick and wife, Corliss of Raleigh, NC; daughters, Mary and husband, Glen of Hamilton, TX, Kathleen of Reno, NV and Marti of Albuquerque; brother, Charles and wife, Leona of Lenexa, KS; 15 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. Ed was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara; a son, John Jr.; and a sister, Cecilia. Ed was a Certified Public Accountant since 1939, past president (1946-47) of the New Mexico Society of Certified Public Accountants, president (1969-79) of the New Mexico Trust Company, treasurer of the Albuquerque 250th Anniversary celebration (1956) and a public accounting practitioner for 45 years; a former member (1950-51) of the New Mexico State Board of Public Accountancy; a member of the Knights of Columbus since 1935 (Albuquerque Council #641) and its Rev. A.M. Mandalari General Assembly, Fourth Degree, and an officer in the Council and/or Assembly for more than twenty years; member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (honorary since 1984) and a former member of its governing Council. Cremation has taken place and a memorial rosary will be recited Friday, 7:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, 1111 University Blvd. NE, Deacon Frank See reciting. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Saturday, 11:00 a.m., at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, 4020 Lomas NE, with Father Francis X. Eggert, Celebrant. Dorothy Dysart, 74, a resident of Corrales since 1972, passed away on Monday, April 30, 2001. Dorothy was born December 27, 1926 the daughter of Condie and Gladys Lee Carmack in Tahoka, Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cabot in January 1999. Dorothy is survived by two children,Kathryn Dysart of Dallas, OR, and James Dysart of Houston, TX; two sisters, Coleen Fulford of Brownfield, TX, and Marilyn McPhaul of Lubbock, TX; four grandchildren, Matthew Teskey, Jason Garver, Sarah Garver and Jesse Boyd. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2001 at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Vista Verde Mortuary, Sara Rd. at Meadowlark Ln., Rio Rancho with The Rev. Walter F. Smith III officiating. Marie L. Gallegos, age 89, and a life long resident of Albuquerque died on Saturday, April 14, 2001. Mrs. Gallegos is survived by one daughter, Helen Lisle and her husband, Paul of Albuquerque; one son, Richard A. Mier Sr. and his wife, Deborah of Las Vegas, NV; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was a member of St. Therese Little Flower Catholic Church. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated, Friday, May 4, 2001 at 9:30 a.m. with the Reverend Father John Plans Celebrant. The family request memorials to Sandia Hospice. M. Clorie Genung born May 5, 1918 in Questa, NM passed away in Albuquerque April 30, 2001. Clorie was preceded in death by her husband, Lyn; her parents, T. Jack Cook and M. Salome Cook; her sister, Esther G. Rael; brothers, Lee, Luis, Juan and Tony. She is survived by her beloved brother, Thomas M. Cook; nieces, Tessie Ortega, Elsie R. Piper and husband, Edwin E. Piper and Mae Casados; nephews, John B. Rael and wife, Duby Rael, Tom Cook Jr. and Robert Cook; as well as many grand-nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends and wonderful neighbors. Rosary will be recited at Queen of Heaven Church in Albuquerque at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 2, 2001. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, May 3, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. at Queen of Heaven Church. Interment to follow at 3:00 p.m. in the Santa Fe National Cemetery.

Eugene Rey Hill, 73, of Albuquerque passed away on April 29, 2001. Gene was born on February 3, 1928 in Alamogordo to Oscar and Soledad Hill. He was the third of eight children. He was preceded in death by both parents. Gene is survived by his wife, Evelyn; daughter, Irene Kulleskog, her husband, Bengt and their daughter, Desiree; daughter, Cara Castanon, her husband, Cuathemoc and their children, Quetzal, Sarai, Paloma, and Josue Caleb; son, Gene Hill, his wife, Paula; and their daughters, Shannon, Kristina, and Angela; and son Jeff Hill. He is also survived by his sisters, Margaret, Rachel, Fina, and their families; his brothers, Bobby, Sammy, Tommy, Larry, and their families; and many cousins, uncles, nieces and nephews. Gene grew up in Alamogordo, NM. He spent four years in the United States Navy. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1952 from UNM. He worked as an organizer and fund-raiser for the United Way. Gene was an active member of his church. He was very involved in the Hispanic community. He was responsible for forming the GI forum in New Mexico, was a founder of the Hispanic Round Table, was president of the Hispanic Cultural Preservation League, was chair of the Albuquerque Chapter of the National Hispanic Media Coalition, and had become an author of Hispanic History and culture. A celebration of Gene's life will be held on Sunday, May 6, 2001 at 3:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church on the corner of Central and Broadway.

Jeffrey Francis Kaup, 36, passed away on Tuesday, May 1, 2001, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He is the beloved son of Capt. (USN Ret.) Robert and Patricia Kaup. He is also survived by his fiancée, Teri Coffman and her sons, Derek and Dillon; sister, Mary Ramkowsky, her husband, Raymond, and their children, Andrew, Tyler, and Elizabeth; sister, Stephanie Molina, her husband, Patrick, and their children, Meredith and Maxwell; sister, Nancy Kaup; special cousin, Adrienne Hughes, and grandmother, Madge Hughes. Jeff was preceded in death by his grandparents, Charles and Mathilda Kaup and James D. Hughes, Sr. He moved to Albuquerque from California in 1985. He was employed by FedEx for the past eight years. Jeff had an incredible appreciation of the outdoors and loved hunting with his dad and spending time with the children in his life. He was especially appreciated for his great sense of humor. Ervin Leon Keener, USA Ret. Col, 94, a resident of Albuquerque since 1979, died Tuesday, May 1, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Bernice Keener of Albuquerque; daughter, Joan Harman of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Mark Harman and wife, Tina, Mary Jo Kelly, and Nancy Tipton and husband, Dave, all of Albuquerque; and great-grandchildren, Brian Kelly, Chris Kelly and Staci Kornegay and husband, Keith. Colonel Keener was born May 13, 1906 in Alabama and graduated from Etowah County High School in 1924 and Georgia Tech in 1929 with a Bachelor's of Science in Business Administration. While at Georgia Tech, he was a member of Gamma Era Chapter of Beta Theta Pi. He received four years of ROTC training and was active in college athletics. Colonel Keener was awarded the Varsity "T" as a member of the 1927 and 1928 Football Teams. He was a member of the Georgia Tech famous "Golden Tornado" football team that played in the 1929 Rose Bowl game, winning the National Championship by defeating the University of California. Colonel Keener entered the United States Army in January 1940 and served in the European Theater during WWII, returning stateside in May 1946. In September 1948, he was assigned to the Utah General Depot in Ogden, UT as Quartermaster Supply Officer. In July 1954, Colonel Keener was assigned to overseas duty in The Far East Command as Commander of the Tokyo Quartermaster Depot. Subsequently, he served as Quartermaster, Central Base Section, Tokyo, Japan. In September 1955, he was assigned to The Alaskan Command as Quartermaster, US Army. In July 1957, Colonel Keener was assigned to Command the
Food and Container Institute of the Armed Forces in Chicago, IL. In February 1958, he was assigned to The Utah General Depot, Ogden, UT and served as Deputy Commander until his retirement from the Army on January 31, 1961. Colonel Keener was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Ogden, UT and the George Washington Lodge, No. 24, Ogden, UT and a life member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge, No. 719, Ogden, UT. Jason Daniel Owen, 28, a resident of Albuquerque passed away April 30, 2001. He is survived by his parents, Dan and Sarah Owen of Roswell; sister, Megan Owen of Rochester, MN; grandparents, James David Owen and Virginia Lee Owen of Albuquerque; uncle, Randy Owen and wife, Susan of New Albany, MS; aunts, Charlotte Knipe of Huntington Beach, CA and Kathleen Knipe of Belfast, N. Reverend Mr. Facundo Raul Rodriguez born to Juan Rodriguez y Moya and Isabelita Rodriguez de Rodriguez in Santa Fe, N.M. Deacon Facundo was called by our Lord and Savior on April 28, 2001, after his battle with heart disease. He is preceded in death by his father, Juan Rodriguez y Moya who died December 8, 1965 and his mother, Isabelita Rodriguez de Rodriguez who died December 13, 1981. He was reared at 1242 Cerro Gordo Road in Santa Fe, NM. On December 26, 1955 he married the former Eloisa Gallegos in Ojo Caliente, NM. Deacon Facundo is survived by his loving wife, Eloisa; beloved daughters, Michelle and husband, Valentin, and Marietta; and beloved son, Mark; and the sunshine of his life, his one and only granddaughter, Micaela. His siblings, Juanita Rodriguez of Estancia, NM, Eduardo Rodriguez and wife, Margaret of Santa Fe, Juan Miguel Rodriguez and wife, Maria of Santa Fe, Josefita Gonzales of Los Alamos, Delfina Foley and husband, Jay of Estancia, Librada Lavadie and husband, Tom of Tucson AZ; a very dear friend, and former co- worker Victor J. Ortiz, Jr of Rowe, NM. He is also survived by many other relatives; Godchildren; and loved ones.Deacon Facundo graduated from Santa Fe High school, from UNM with a BA in Political Science and Education; from NM Highlands University with a MA in Public School Administration, Supervision, Guidance, Counseling and Elementary Education. He taught school in Cerrillos, NM, Santa Cruz, NM and Pojoaque, NM. He was a principal in El Rito, NM and superintendent for the Penasco Independent School District. He was Bi- County Welfare Director for Rio Arriba and Los Alamos, State Director for the Work Experience and Training Program; South West Regional Representative for the American Public Welfare Association for five States; Director for the Santa Fe Model Cities Program; Director for the Field Operations, New Mexico Motor Vehicle Department; Executive Director for the Migrant Opportunity Program for Arizona; Albuquerque/ Bernalillo/ Torrence Counties Economic Opportunity Board; Program Officer for the NM Economic Opportunity Office; Planning Director/ Bureau Chief for the Governor's office of Employment and Training Administration, Real Estate Investor for the NM State Refugee Coordination; Security Officer with AKAL, Parish Administrator Pro Tem at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Villanueva, NM for the Archdiocese of Santa Fe; Advocate and Coordinator for the NM Older Worker Program. He patriotically served his country in the US Air Force and was honorably discharged on February 6, 1946 after serving in the Asian Pacific Theater of Operations Air Offense of New Guniea and Luzon Islands. He was ordained in to the Permanent Diaconate Program on June 7, 1981. He faithfully and lovingly served the Archdiocese of Santa Fe and the people of NM in the capacity as deacon until his death. He was a life long-member of the National Education Association and the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the Holy Name Society, VFW; American Legion; DAV; BPOE (Elks); Boy Scouts of America; Lt Col for the NM Defense Forces, and National Association of Retired Persons. He was honored by Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities; Who's Who in NM; Who's Who in the West; Who's Who in Education; numerous Air Force Decorations; President's Unit Citation, and was Chair of the the National Advisory Commission to the Secretary of the Health, Education, and Welfare on the Education of Spanish Speaking Americans. Memorial contributions may be given to Santa Maria de La Paz in loving memory of their faithful servant Deacon Facundo. Viewing will be at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, 2001 at Santa Maria de la Paz where a Rosary will be recited at 5:00 p.m. prayed by the Knights of Columbus and another Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. by the Deacons of the Archdiocese of Santa Fe. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 2, 2001 at Santa Maria de la Paz. the main celebrant will be the Most Reverend Michael Sheehan, celebrating will also be Reverend Fr. Hazel L. Scarbrough, 93, a resident of Albuquerque since 1946, died Tuesday, May 1, 2001. She is survived by her daughter, Mignon Stevens and husband, George of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Dr. Meave Stevens Dominguez and husband, Dr. Jerry Dominguez, Tracy Ingles and husband, John, Richard Stevens, and Lynne LaBeau and husband, Wayne, all of Albuquerque, NM; great-grandchildren, John Ingles Jr., Cameron Ingles, Elisa LaBeau, Holly LaBeau, Jared Dominguez, Jalen Dominguez, Trevor Stevens, and Kelsey Stevens; and one great-great granddaughter, Kayley LaBeau. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ivan E. Scarbrough on March 24, 1984, three sisters; and two brothers. Mrs. Scarbrough was born on November 22, 1907 in Big Hill, TX. She married Ivan E. Scarbrough on March 24, 1928 in Norton, TX. They moved to Albuquerque in 1946 where she enjoyed being very active at Fruit Avenue Baptist Church. She was a very dedicated Christian serving the needy, providing fruit baskets and beautiful roses from her garden. She loved her family and set a good Christian example for all who knew her. Vera Leah Smelser passed on to her eternal reward at the age of 93 in Albuquerque on April 30, 2001. Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 4, 2001 at the Presbyterian Church in Cuba, NM. Vera was born on November 22, 1907 in Troy, OK to Whitney Elwood and Myrtile (Smith) Mires. As a young child, she moved to Floyd, NM where she grew up and lived until she married Homer I. Smelser in January 1924. Shortly thereafter, Vera and Homer moved to northern NM as homesteaders and settled in the Penistaja area near Cuba, NM. She and her husband lived and worked in the Cuba area for over 70 years until health considerations necessitated relocation to Albuquerque a few years ago. She was involved in every aspect of their pioneer ranching operation as well as in a cafe which they owned and operated in Cuba in the 1950's. Vera was the supervisor of the hot lunch program for the Cuba Public Schools for numerous years. She was an excellent cook, loved gardening and grew many varieties of flowers and vegetables around the family's log cabin on the Chuilla. She contributed much to the development of Cuba through church and civic projects. She was one of the main organizers of the Presbyterian Church's annual community improvement fund-raising dinners. As a longtime member of the Penistaja Women's Extension Club, she helped begin and maintain publication of the first local newspaper, The Cuba News. She was a charter member of the Nacimiento Federated Women's Club and worked tirelessly with other club members to bring the first health clinic to Cuba. They also opened the first community library which was gradually expanded and eventually transferred to the village of Cuba. She is preceded in death by her loving husband, Homer; a son, William L. Smelser; two sisters, Juanita Johnston and Flora Karns; a half-brother, Whitney Elwood Mires Jr.; and a devoted daughter-in-law, Mariea L. Smelser. She is survived by two sons, Samuel H. Smelser of Albuquerque and Worthington S. Smelser of Cuba; as well as a half-sister, Billie Winkler of Roosevelt, OK; other survivors include her grandchildren to which she was very devoted, Larry Smelser, Carla Lawler, Jack Lawler, and Joseph Smelser of Albuquerque, Michael and Teresa Smelser of Sacramento, CA, Beth Dandy of Las Vegas, NV, Sheriesse Smelser-Clark of Hartford, CT, Steven Smelser of Las Cruces, NM, Clarice Strong of Tucumcari, NM, Whitney Smelser of Denver, CO, and Jonathan Smelser of Cuba, NM. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren; and numerous other nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to the Cuba Village Library in her honor.

Mr. Gene C. K. Tang passed away peacefully on April 21, 2001, at the age of 90. Mr. Tang was born in Hoi Ping, Canton, China, to Edward and Kim Thin Gaw. Edward Gaw immigrated to the U.S. at the turn of the 20th century, and established Fremont's Fine Foods in downtown Albuquerque in 1918, while his family remained in China. Gene Tang traveled to the U.S. for college and earned a B.S. in Electrical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin in 1932. He returned to China and began working for General Electric in Shanghai in 1939. He married Ann S.W. Chang, and together they raised two children. Mr. Tang, with his family, joined his parents in Albuquerque in 1955. Gene and Ann assumed ownership of the family business in 1959, relocated Fremont's to the newly opened Coronado Center in 1965, then retired and moved to Phoenix in 1983. Their son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Mary Tang then assumed ownership of Fremont's. Gene and Ann returned to Albuquerque in 1995. Gene Tang is survived by his devoted wife of 66 years, Ann Tang of Albuquerque; daughter, Dorothy Lui and husband, Kwong Ling Lui of Los Angeles, CA; son, Richard Tang and wife, Mary of Albuquerque; grandsons, Daniel Tang of Albuquerque, Henderick and Frederick Lui of Los Angeles; and granddaughters, Amy Tang of Albuquerque, and Carrie and Korrie Lui of Los Angeles. Services will be held Friday, May 4, 2001, 1:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, 1111 University Blvd., N.E., with Pastor Don Wilson officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Kim Ong, Allan Toledo, Richard Tang, Henderick Lui, Daniel Tang, and Frederick Lui. Honorary Pallbearer will be Kwong Ling Lui. Mary Ann Tenorio, 60, a resident of Albuquerque passed away peacefully at her home Wednesday, May 2, 2001, while surrounded by her loving family. Visitations will tonight from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Alameda Mortuary, where a Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. this evening. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday at 10:00 a.m. at San Ysidro Catholic Church in Corrales. Interment will follow at the Corrales Catholic Cemetery. Joe Wilfred "Wild" Torrez Sr., born November 14, 1937, died and was received into God's Kingdom on April 30, 2001. His life long love of music has brought lots of happiness to our lives and the lives of many others. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe M.C. Torres and Moriama Torres; his son, Leroy Eugene Torrez; granddaughter, Jenee Lee-Andrea Torrez, and is survived by his wife of 43 years, Edna Zamora-Torrez; four sons, Larry Torrez and wife Pam of Hawthorne, CA., Joe W. Torrez Jr and wife, Renee, David Lorenzo Torrez; one daughter, Jessica W. Torrez-Garza and husband, T-Bone Garza; 16 grandchildren Angel Christine Torrez-Nalley, Leroy Eugene Torrez Jr, Brenda Villanueva, Jesse Torrez, David Lorenzo Torrez Jr, Michael Lee Torrez, Nathan Lee Torrez-Cox, Joe A. Ayala III, Anthony Torrez, Joshua A. Ayala, Jeneille A. Ayala, Jozlin A. Ayala, Dakota Torrez, Deandrea Torrez, and Cassandra Torrez; three brothers; seven sisters; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends who loved and will miss him. Leona (Lee) Turner, 69, a long time former resident of Albuquerque, passed away April 29, 2001 in Fayetteville, AR, her home for the past six years. Lee fought a brave year long battle against cancer. She worked at AFOTEC on Kirtland Air Base during her long career with the Air Force. HERMAN IGNACIO PACHECO, 78, died Friday in Las Vegas, N.M. He was born Dec. 15, 1922, to Ignacio and Hattie Herman Pacheco in Beaulah. He spent his childhood in Sapello. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps at age 16. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater. Following his return, he became a journeyman carpenter. He spent the majority of his professional life as a building contractor, but also enjoyed farming. He was preceded in death by his son, Michael Thomas Pacheco; and a brother, Fred Pacheco. He is survived by his son, Donald Pacheco of Tijeras; a brother, George M. Pacheco of Mora and California; a sister, Stella Pacheco Moten of Clovis; and special friend and companion Celestino Arellano of Wagon Mound. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at Rogers Mortuary in Las Vegas. Burial will be at noon on Friday at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. Rogers Mortuary, Las Vegas.

OCTAVIO VICENTE RAMOS III , infant son of Octavio Ramos Jr. and Christine Trigg Ramos of Los Alamos, died April 25 in Albuquerque. He is survived by his parents, Christine and Octavio Ramos Jr. of Los Alamos; a twin sister, Teresa Elena Ramos; maternal grandparents Elaine and John Trigg of Kansas; paternal grandparents Teresa and Octavio Ramos Sr. of Albuquerque; maternal great-grandmother Trudy Flory; maternal great-grandfather Vincent Trigg; and other relatives. Private, graveside services will be held at the Guaje Pines Cemetery in Los Alamos. Block-Salazar Mortuary, Española.

TIMOTHY A. VARGAS, 43, of Taos died Tuesday. He was born June 28, 1957, to Felix and Eduvigen Vargas in Embudo. He married Michelle Gonzales on June 19, 1995. He was an employee of the town of Taos, working in the water department and then later in construction. He also was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Guadalupe Gonzales; and a grandmother, Esther Vargas. He is survived by his wife, Michelle; parents Felix and Eduvigen Vargas; stepdaughters Chante and Renee LeMay; brothers Leroy Vargas and wife Pauline, David Vargas and wife Christine, and Anthony Vargas; sisters Kathy Ortiz, Debbie Martinez and husband Onesimo, and Felicia Ortiz and husband Leandro; three grandchildren; and numerous other relatives and friends. He was cremated. Visitation will be at 6 p.m. today at the Sisneros LaFollette Family Funeral Service of Taos with a rosary recited at 7 p.m. A second visitation is planned at 6 p.m. Friday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, with a rosary recited at 7 p.m. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church. Dee Edward Alberts, a resident of Albuquerque, New Mexico, died Friday, April 26, 2002. Born September 3, 1925 in East St. Louis, Illinois. He is survived by his wife, Mildred Ann (nee Diers); four sons, Edward of St. Louis, MO, Dennis (Nancy Reaves) of Chesterfield, MO, Mark (Sharon) of Colorado Springs, CO, Dean (Shari) of Smithton, IL; 11 grandchildren, Alisha (David) Jolly, Lucas, Jordan, Austin, Renee, Andrew, Amanda, Amber Dee, Megan, Allison, Ian; and one great-granddaughter, Serena Jolly. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold Denman Alberts and Madalynne Mae (nee Aldrich) Bilyeu; and his identical twin brother, Charles Lee Alberts. He was an avid golfer, belonged to the Paradise Hills Men's Golfing Association; he was the president of his bowling league, and member of the Men's International Bowling Congress. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and as a 1st Lieutenant in the Army during the Korean War. Private memorial services were held Tuesday, April 30, 2002, at La Mesa Presbyterian Church at 11:00 a.m. Interment took place at Gate of Heaven Cemetery with an Honor Guard presenting a United States Flag on Thursday, May 2, 2002.
