Rufina Contreras, born April 28, 1920 in Kelley, NM, a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother was called by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ into his kingdom of Heaven on Saturday, June 15, 2002. Rufina was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-five years, Refugio Contreras in 1998; her parents, Ramon and Telesfora Garcia; her two infant sisters, Sinforosa and Adela; her five brothers, Salvador; Filiberto; Andelesio; Justinano; and Jose Ignacio Garcia. She was a member of Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church. She was a proud mother of her eleven offspring and fifty-six grandchildren. Her love for her family was larger than life. People were drawn to her because of her unselfish love for all who she came in contact with. She was never a traveler nor visitor, yet everyone came to be around her. Rufina is survived by her eleven loving children, Baloy Contreras of Oakview, CA; Connie Boyd and her husband, Lou of Los Lunas; Rosemarie Cordova and her husband, Max of Belen; Naria Maes and her husband, Ralph of Valencia; Esperfia Mills of Belen; Wilfred Contreras of Contreras, NM; Maria Luz Contreras of Pueblitos; Ramona Liot and her husband Jim of Los Lunas; Juan Contreras and his wife, Diane of Belen; Reynaldo Ramon Contreras and his wife, Benita of Raton, NM; Patrick Contreras and his wife, Denise of Socorro. She is also survived by her thirty-three grandchildren and twenty-three great grandchildren; her one brother, Juan Garcia; and many loving nieces and nephews. All services will take place at Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church. A Viewing will be held on Tuesday, June 18, 2002 at 5:30pm followed by a rosary at 6:00pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 19, 2002 at 10:00am followed with interment at Our Lady of Belen Memorial Gardens. Thomas (Tom) O. Droelle, age 56, a beloved and devoted husband, father, brother and friend was welcomed into the arms of the Lord our Savior, Thursday, June 13, 2002, while surrounded by his loving family. Tom was a resident of Albuquerque; he retired as a proud Veteran of the United States Air Force, where he was awarded the "Man of the Year." He enjoyed fishing, camping, and especially refinishing furniture; but best of all he loved his family. Tom will always be remembered by the kids around the block as the "Popsicle Man" each time he'd open his garage door the neighborhood children would go to him because they knew he had popsicles for them. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Carmen Droelle; two sisters, Joan Van Ittersum and Jackie La Forest. Tom leaves behind his loving wife of 33 years, Gloria Droelle of the family home; his precious children, Thomas Droelle, Jr. and wife, Lisa, and Michele Droelle and fiancée, Kurt Schoenholzer. Also surviving are three sisters, Carol Knellwitz and husband, Dick, Nancy Hunley and husband, Hubert, Pat Aguanno and husband, John; two brothers, Frank Droelle and wife, Jane, and Robert Droelle; many other relatives, and a host of friends. Tom will be greatly missed by his loving family and by those who knew and loved him. Visitations will be today from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Alameda Mortuary, where a Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. this evening. Final viewing will be Tuesday morning from 8:30 a.m. to 8:55 a.m. at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, 11401 Indian School Rd., NE, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 a.m., with Fr. Richard Olona as Celebrant. Julian A. Garcia, 77, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, died Friday, June 14, 2002. Mr. Garcia was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Virginia in 1997. He is survived by his mother, Dulcinea Sanchez of Albuquerque; son, Rey Garcia, and wife Barbara of Lakewood, CA; daughter, Laura Gartling, and husband David, of Albuquerque; 5 grandchildren, Michael-Rey, R. Lance, Soña Juliana, Mollie Mariana, and Raymundo Vincent; great-granddaughter, Rayannon Garcia; brother, Flaviano Sanchez, Jr. and wife Billie; sisters, Ruth Jinzo, Eva Sweeney and husband Ed, Frances Pohl and husband Charlie; brothers and sisters-in-law, Joe E. Garcia and wife Vivian, Mabel Williamson and husband Michael, Aurelia Garcia; and his close companion for past four years, Louise Garcia; and many nieces and nephews. He was a member of VFW Post 41, DAV Chapter 3, and Teamsters Union 492. Frank C. Hibben, archaeologist, anthropologist, author, outdoor adventurer, big-game hunter and philanthropist, died peacefully in his sleep, Tuesday, June 11, 2002 at his Albuquerque home. Born December 10, 1910, Dr. Hibben was professor emeritus at the University of New Mexico having started his teaching career there in 1938. During the last few years of his life, Hibben developed the plans for the Hibben Center for Archaeological Studies at UNM and supplied the funding for the three-story complex nearing completion on the western edge of the campus next to the Maxwell Museum. He was a 1933 graduate of Princeton University, received his master's degree in zoology from UNM in 1936, and his Ph.D. in archaeology from Harvard the following year. Survivors include his wife, Marilyn; his lifelong friend and helper, Nora Chino Wilson of Acoma Pueblo; and his stepchildren. Dr. Hibben was predeceased by his wife, Eleanor "Brownie" Hibben; his son, Patrick Hibben; and his two brothers. Services will be today, Monday, June 17, 3:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 215 Locust NE, (one block north of Central and I-25), Albuquerque, with a reception following in Fellowship Hall. John E. Hobaugh, 85, loving husband, father and friend, a resident of Albuquerque since 1941, died Saturday, June 15, 2002. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Stella G. Hobaugh of the family home; daughters, Nellie May Allen of Dallas, TX and Stella Jane Riley and husband, Robert of Beeville, TX; sons, Lloyd C. Hobaugh and wife, Joyce of Los Lunas and John A. Hobaugh and wife, Daphne of Farmington, NM; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; special friend, Myrtle Kincer of Phoenix, AZ; and sisters-in-law, Bertha Bieter of Guysmille, PA and Mary Rosko of Stanton, PA. Margaret Martinez, 72, a resident of Albuquerque since 1930, died Friday, June 14, 2002. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Bruno Martinez of the family home; sons, Bernardino and wife, Marie of Tijeras, Robert and wife, Roberta of Albuquerque; daughter, Dolores Martinez and husband, Ralph of Albuquerque; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sisters, Elodia Aguilar of National City, CA, Isabelle Terrazas, and Rachel Medina. She is preceded in death by her sisters, Christina Arias, Cesaria Sanchez, Vincentita Arias; brothers, Joe Estudillo, Lalo Arias; and 2 grandchildren, Daniel and Virginia Martinez. Mrs. Martinez was a member of Our Lady of Annunciation Church. Rosary will be recited Monday, 7:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, 1111 University NE. Frances E. Murphy, 90, went to heaven on May 30, 2002. She was greeted in heaven by her husband, Dean Sr.; her granddaughter, Alissa Beth; and many friends and relatives who preceded her in death. She is survived by her daughter, Diana (Louis) Enenstein, Hoff Est II. and their daughters, Jennifer, Kristen and Kira; her son, Dean Jr. (Carol) and their sons, David and Douglas. She was a longtime member of St. Bernadette's Church. She was in Chicago at the time of her death and a celebration of her life and Mass of Christian Burial took place at St., Hubert, Hoffman Estates, Ill. The Albuquerque Memorial Service is scheduled on Tuesday, June 18, 2002, 11:00 a.m. at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, with Deacon Al McClane presiding. Reception to follow. Hilario J. "Lalo" Torres a lifelong resident of Bernalillo passed on to his eternal life, Thursday, June 13, 2002. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Helen Torres; sons, Joe H. Torres and wife Orlinda, Jack S. Torres and wife Anna; daughters Margie Amiot and husband Steve, Gina Torres all of Bernalillo, and Liz Kirschner and husband Joel of Albuquerque; grandchildren Catarina, Hilario and Aurora Torres, David and Joseph LePre, Mario and Carlos Torres and Richie Kirschner; brother Richard Torres; sisters Lala de Baca and husband John, Pauline Blechner and husband, Al; and numerous relatives and friends. Lalo was a devoted member of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church. He owned and operated a grocery business for over 50 years. He served as Mayor of Bernalillo for 18 years, State Senator and Board Member of numerous social and political organizations. Lalo was instrumental in many improvements in the town including bringing the First Bank, Medical Clinic, Industrial Park and swimming pool, among many other projects. Lalo served honorably during WWII in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of Rotary Club, Board of Education, Democratic Party Leadership and St. Joseph Hospital Board to name a few. Rosary will be recited Sunday, June 16, 2002, 7:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Bernalillo. John M. Bolger, a resident of Albuquerque, NM, and formerly of Chelmsford, MA died Wednesday, June 11, 2003 in New Mexico at the age of 44. Born August 31, 1958, he was a son of John C. Bolger of Chelmsford, MA and the late Alma B. (Brown) Bolger. He graduated from Chelmsford High School in 1977. Mr. Bolger was a self-employed General Contractor in Albuquerque,NM, and was active in the Project Share Program. Besides his father, he is survived by one daughter, Candiace Marie Bolger of Seattle, WA; three sisters, Katherine K. Bolger of Old Greenwich, CT, Mary N. Bolger of Lowell, MA, and Rebecca B. Small of Chelmsford, MA. He was the brother of the late Ann Marie Bolger. Funeral Services are private. Rosemary V. Brown (Vaden) died peacefully at Kaseman Hospice on Tuesday, June 10, 2003. She was born in Mesilla Park, NM, June 27, 1920. She is survived by her sister, Jean Pierce of Albuquerque; son, Dave and daughter-in-law, Donna of Albuquerque; step-daughter, Alice Ann Ferriola and son-in-law, Rick Ferriola of St. Myers, FL; sister-in-law, Sister Mary Josetta of Rogers, AR; grandchildren, Ben and Celia Brown, Robin Wagner, Rick, Tina and Nichole Ferriola; great-granddaughter, Amanda; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Bernard F. Brown in 2002; parents, Clay and Mary Vaden; brother, Samuel Vaden who was killed in World war II; and sister, Mina Walsh. Rosemary graduated from the Loretto Academy in Santa Fe in 1938 and loved to tell stories of running up and down the now famous Loretto Chapel's "Miracle Staircase" for choir. She also attended New Mexico State Teachers College (Western New Mexico University) in Silver City. She served as Bill Clerk of the New Mexico State Senate in 1939. From 1940 to 1945, she worked at the New Mexico Bureau of Revenue. During World War II, Rosemary was a volunteer with the Civil Air Patrol and received an honorary appointment from New Mexico Governor John E. Miles as a Colonel, Aide-de Camp to the Governor's Staff. She met Bernard while he was serving with the Medical Detachment of the 1886th Service Command Unit at Bruns General Hospital in Santa Fe during the War. They were married in St. Francis Cathedral in Santa Fe in 1944. Later, the couple moved to Illinois where his family was located and lived in Springfield where Bernard returned to work as a Pharmacist. Rosemary worked for many years as a bookkeeper with the Rickbial Accounting Firm and then as the head bookkeeper for the B & F Toggery Mens' Stores in Springfield. She was also a volunteer at the St. Agnes Grade School in Springfield where Dave went to school. After retirement in 1980, Bernard and Rosemary returned to New Mexico and lived in Albuquerque where she was involved in the "Golden Agers" and was an avid card player with her friends. Cremation has taken place. A Remembrance reception will be held Thursday, June 19, 2003, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at French Mortuary, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE. A Mass will be held on Friday, June 20, 2003, 9:00 a.m., at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, 11401 Indian School Rd. NE. Interment will take place at 1:00 p.m., at Santa Fe National Cemetery. The family would like to thank Rosemary's longtime caregiver, Annie Kennelly for all her help and kindness through the years. They would also like to gratefully acknowledge the outstanding staff at Kaseman Hospice for the wonderful care and compassion they gave to Rosemary and her family. Joe Nester Chavez Sr., age 67, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother was welcomed into the arms of our Lord our Savior, after a short illness, on Sunday, June 15, 2003, while surrounded by his loving family. Joe Nester was a long time resident of Barelas, and a parishioner of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Catholic Church. He is preceded in death by his parents Filomeno and Elsie Chavez. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Mary Alice Chavez of the family home; his children, Joe Nester Chavez Jr. and wife Angela; daughter JoAnna Mondragon, and husband Robert; four granddaughters, Jessica Mullen, and husband Bryce; Claudette Chavez, Donna Chavez, Angelica Chavez; great-granddaughters, Aspen and Joi, all of Albuquerque. Also surviving are his brothers, Ruben Chavez and wife Bea; Robert Chavez, Ron Chavez and wife Alice, Freddie Chavez, Phil Chavez and wife Diane; four sisters, Eileen Chavez; Vivian Pohl and husband Mike; Agnes Aragon and husband John; Diane Dominguez and husband Robert; and numerous nieces, nephews, other loving relatives, friends, as well as all his car sales buddies. A rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Sarah Louise Houston Duke, a long time resident of Socorro, NM, passed away on June 4, 2003 from a lengthy illness. She married Glen Paul Duke (deceased) on August 16, 1952 in Truth or Consequences, NM. Sarah is survived by her children, Nedra and husband, Robert, Larry and wife, Monica, Glen and wife, Melissa, Rose Mary and husband, Tim; two brothers, Waymon and William Jay; ten grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. Services will be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 427 Los Lentes, Los Lunas, NM, on Saturday, June 28, 2003 at 2:00 p.m.

Gabriel E. Garcia, 19, a resident of Albuquerque passed away on June 15, 2003. Gabriel is survived by his mother, Sandra Renteria and fiance, Steve Chevrier Sr.; his father, Fred Gino Garcia and girlfriend, Linda Martinez; one sister, Monique Parsons and husband Paul; two brothers, Andrew Garcia and Steven Chevrier Jr.; grandparents, Felipe and Aurelia Renteria, Fred Garcia and wife Melva and Marcella Monroe; many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Pluma C. Griffin, passed away on June 14, 2003. A long time resident of Albuquerque. She is survived by her son, Bob Griffin and wife, Yvonne; granddaughter, Annelle Griffin; two grandsons, Eric Griffin and Stewart Griffin; five great-grandchildren, Ben Griffin, Jake Griffin, Evan Griffin, Kayla Griffin and Kyle Griffin. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Carl Griffin. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. Cremation will take place. Memorial Service pending. Jose (Aparcio), age 85, beloved and devoted father, grandfather and brother was called home to be with the Lord our Savior and his beloved wife Lucia on Sunday, June 15, 2003. Aparcio was a lifelong resident of Cuba, NM; where he was a rancher, a business owner; and a parishioner of Immaculate Conception Church. He worked as a Livestock Inspector for 35 years; and was a proud World War II Veteran. He was preceded in death by his parents, Reyes and Eutimia Gurule; a son, Lawrence Oliver Gurule; brothers, Steve, Robert and Mere Gurule; and a sister, Lucarita Martinez. Jose is survived by loving children, Bobby Gurule and wife Debra, Jeffrey Gurule and wife Darlene, Donna Montoya and husband Anthony; his precious grandchildren, Samuel Gurule, Lindy Gurule, Matthew Gurule, Renee Gurule, Isaac Montoya, Andrea Maestas and husband Kelly, Christopher Gurule, Ryan Montoya, B.J. Montoya, Vanessa Gurule; his great-grandchildren, Joshua Maestas, Mariah Maestas, Alexis Gurule, Lawrence Gurule and Aliza Gurule. Alfonso N. Lopez, 64, our brother, was welcomed into the arms of our Lord and Saviour, on June 14, 2003. Alfonso was born on December 6, 1938 to Juan and Magdalena Lopez. Alfonso is survived by three sons, Daniel, Vincent, and Kenneth Lopez; daughter, Christina Stewart; father, Juan B. Lopez; sisters, Maryhelen (Bob) Haeffner of Nebraska, Barbara (Richard) Otero, Amelia (Nick) Gonzales both of Albuquerque; four grandchildren; and 1 great-granddaughter; his ex-wife and friend Dottie Gonzales; aunts, Soledad Ruiz, Lucy (George) Gonzales; uncle, Serafin (Lupe) Lopez; numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins. Alfonso served in the Marine Reserves, was a draftsman worked on the schematics for the MX Missle and Space Shuttle. Alfonso was an accomplished artist, wood carver, and a Barber. He was a kind man, he will be missed, by all who came to know him. We will miss you Alfonso services, will be held on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at Mount Calvary.

Eloy Maestas died Saturday, June 14, 2003 in Albuquerque at the age of 95. Mr. Maestas is preceded in death by his parents, Rufino and Adelaida Maestas, wife, Quiterita Maestas, and sons, Henry and Benjamin Maestas. His is survived by 15 children, Alviria Rogers and husband, James, Alda Najera and husband, Jesus, Leonard Maestas and wife, Sarah, Velma Martinez and husband, Zeb, Viola Durham and husband, Mike, Gloria Walker and husband, Dan, James Maestas Sr., Natalie Ornelas and husband, Manuel, Theresa Herron and husband, Smitty, Dolores Black and husband, David, Rita Clifton and Joseph Trujillo, Flelisario Maestas and Arlene Valencia, Eloy Maestas Jr., Debbie Owens and husband, Rick and Julian Maestas; brother, Guiermillo Maestas; 55 grandchildren; and 47 great-grandchildren. A Rosary for Mr. Maestas will be recited on Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church and on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church in Cuba, NM. Funeral Services for Mr. Maestas will be held on Thursday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cuba, NM where the Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at the Santo Nino Cemetery in La Jara, NM. Pallbearers will be Duane Maestas, Abel Maestas, Moses Maestas, Pres Martinez, Wesley Walker and Jeremiah Gallegos. Arrangements by:

Sally Maynes, 56, passed away June 14, 2003 after a short illness. She was preceded in death by her husband Herman A. Maynes, and is survived by her four children, Cindy Vargas and husband Nick, Michelle Esquibel and husband Gary, Abel Maynes and Herman Maynes Jr.; seven grandchildren, Liane, Crystal, Joanne, Dominic, Cory, Jordan, and Andrew; six sisters; two brothers; many other family and friends that loved and will miss her. Services will be held at St. Edwin Parish, 2105 Barcelona SW. A viewing will begin at 6:00pm on Wednesday, June 18, 2003, followed by the rosary, which will be recited at 7:00pm. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday, June 19, 2003 at 8:30am. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, 1900 Edith NE. Arrangements by Direct Funeral Services, 2919 4th ST. Roberta "Bobby" Merkle, born July 12, 1911 in Ashland, Ohio, passed away June 14, 2003 at the family home after a lengthy illness. She moved to New Mexico in 1949 where she resided in Peralta for over 30 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Norbert "Shorty" Merkle and her son, Donald Hoffert. She is survived by her only daughter, Dolores Scruggs of Peralta; her four grandchildren, Cheryle Costales of Albuquerque; Susan Wallace of Bosque Farms; Jody Anderson of Peralta and Jerry Hess of Ridgefield, WA; her eight great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. "Bobby", along with her husband, "Shorty", was co-owner of Albuquerque Generator Exchange retiring in 1973. She was loved very much and will be greatly missed. Cremation has taken place. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, June 17, 2003 at 3:00 PM at Our Lady of Belen Memorial Gardens cemetery. Romero Funeral Home, 609 N. Main St. Belen, NM.
