Fermin Jose Aragon was born in Frisco, NM to Fidel and Doloritas Jiron Aragon on November 24, 1914. He passed from this earth on June 5, 2003. He attended high school in Monticello, NM and college at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. He entered the Army Air Corps March 20, 1942 where he became a Staff Sergeant in the Army Weather Service. He married Natalia Jiron of Reserve, NM at Sacred Heart Church in Albuquerque on February 3, 1943. He served in the army until December 1, 1945 during which he received the American Theater Service Medal European, African Middle East Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, one Service Stripe and three Overseas Service Bars, Good Conduct Medal, WWII Victory Campaign Medal. He was qualified as a Carbine and Rifle Marksman, which he attributed to his NM hunting adventures. His battles and campaigns included Northern France and the Rhineland. He entered the US Weather Service, Department of Commerce on September 1, 1946 and retired on February 1, 1973. His first assignment was at the Albuquerque Weather Bureau located at the Albuquerque Airport until June 1962. During these years he had four children, Rita Darlene, Rudolph Fermin, Dolores Emelia and Anna Marie. He was an active member of the Queen of Heaven Catholic Church, and of the VFW in Albuquerque. Serving as Boy Scout Master of his son's troop, he also fished and hunted all over NM, especially in the Jemez Mts. and in Reserve where he had many relatives. Often hunting on horseback with his many uncles and cousins, he was very successful and never hunted out of season. In June 1962, Fermin was transferred to Vandenberg Air Force Base in Lompoc, CA. He moved nearby to Santa Ynez, CA with his wife. He enjoyed his retirement, especially gardening and feeding his many family, friends and neighbors with his organic produce. His family continued to grow and eventually he had ten grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren. Fermin and his wife moved to Lakeside, CA to be near their daughters and their families. Though suffering from poor health, Fermin was very happy and proud to celebrate his 60th wedding anniversary with his family and friends in February 2003. He certainly liked to party. He is survived by his wife, Natalia; and his beloved family. Interment will be at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego.

Mr. Leonard G. Aragon, 54, a resident of Albuquerque passed away on June 13, 2003. Mr. Aragon is the beloved husband of 25 years to Mrs. Gretta Aragon. Mr. Aragon is also survived by one daughter, Priscilla Vigil and husband, Andrew; one son, Brian Aragon; his loving mother, Amelia (Molly) Aragon; four grandchildren, Alexis, Elijah, Andruw and Alisha; one uncle, Leo Aragon; one niece, Diane Iafornaro; and one nephew, Randy Aragon. Mr. Aragon was preceded in death by his father, Adolfo Aragon. A Rosary will be recited Sunday afternoon in the Gabaldon Memorial Chapel at 2:00 p.m. with Visitation after 1:30 p.m. Eileen Montoya will recite the Rosary. Private disposition will follow. Henry Gilham Arnold II was born in Hackensack, New Jersey on August 4, 1922. He passed away on May 5, 2003. He was a pilot all his life. During World War II, he served as a flight instructor and flew the Stearman PT-17, AT-6, P-40, P-51, B-17, B24, B-29, and C-47. During the Korean War he served with the 175th Fighter Squadron as an F-84 pilot. In 1964 he came to Kirtland Air Force Base for duty with the Air Force Special Weapons Center. He retired from the Air Force in 1968. Mr. Arnold will be missed in his community, and by many high school students he mentored. He is survived by his former wife, Cora Nagel Arnold of Neosho, MO; three sons, Gil Arnold of Rossland, B.C. Canada; Kevin Arnold of Noel, MO, and Tim Arnold of Denver, CO; and seven grandchildren.

Joseph Richard (Dick) Baldwin died June 11, 2003 at the age of 73. He was born on September 26, 1929 in New Jersey, and has been a resident of Albuquerque for 34 years. He is survived by his spouse, Janet Baldwin of Albuquerque; a daughter, Terri Palacio and son-in-law, Ivan of Rio Rancho NM; a son, Alan Baldwin and daughter-in-law, Della Baldwin both of Gulf Port, MS; a son, Jeff Baldwin and daughter-in-law, Tina Baldwin of Los Lunas N.M. Dick is also survived by six grandchildren, Ashley Palacio, Amanda Palacio,and Aimee Palacio all of Rio Rancho, NM, Adrina Young, Andrew Young and Alaina Baldwin all of Gulf Port, MS. A Memorial Service will be held Monday, June 16, 3:30 p.m. at Aspen Funeral Alternatives Chapel.

Kenneth Warren Begley, 89, fourth of ten children of Joseph and Edna Marcum Begley - original Estancia Valley pioneers - was born March 27, 1914, in Belen, NM. He spent most of his life living in the Estancia Valley and died, June 6, 2003, quietly at his ancestral home near Mountainair, NM. A life celebration will be held Saturday June 21, 2003 at the Estancia Senior Center, 305 E. Highland, Bring you favorite covered dish, and your instrument for "Pickin & Grinnin." Ada M. Hamilton passed away on June 10, 2003 from heart failure. She was born in Spickard, Missouri February 3, 1917 to Ed and Mettie McLaughlin. Ada married Delbert Hamilton on May 10, 1935, he precedes her in death. They had five children, daughter, Joyce Yoakum, who precedes her in death, son, Gary Hamilton of Kansas City, MO, John and wife, Patricia Hamilton of Portland, OR, daughter, Anita and husband, Jim Smith of Penrose, CO, daughter, Marietta Weeks of Albuquerque; and brother, Sam McLaughlin of San Diego, CA. Ada has 16 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Ada lived in Kansas City, MO from 1950 - 1982 where she worked for the Westinghouse Company, Remington Arms and the Social Security Administration. She retired to Albuquerque in 1982 where she loved the climate and culture. Ada will be remembered fro her commitment to family, honesty, work ethic and quick wit. Cremation has taken place and Services will be held on June 16, 2003 at Aspen Funeral Home, 1:00 p.m. in Albuquerque.

Sarah Isabel Heath, was born in French, New Mexico, December 17, 1920. She is survived by five children, Shirlen Heath, Jr. and wife, Belva of Colorado, Wanda Dickey and husband, Bob of New Mexico, Patricia Hanno and husband, Dick of Arizona, Beulah McAdams and husband, Mac of Arizona and Nedra Cook and husband, Mike of Arizona; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sisters, Kay Akin of Oklahoma and Alice Stancel of California; brother, Clarence Ayres and wife, Lil of California; and special nephew, Ted Heath. Mrs. Heath was preceded in death by her husband, Shirlen M. Bud Heath; and her parents, Joseph Chester and Ora Ray Ayres. Alfredo Garcia Mendez went to be with his Lord Jesus Christ. He was born July 24, 1920. A resident of Albuquerque since 1950, he and his family came from Santa Fe, NM. He was a Disabled American Veteran who served in the army in the South Pacific during WWII and was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Ribbon and the Purple Heart. He retired from the City of Albuquerque in 1985, was a Life Member of VFW Post 401 and a member of the First Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Angie of 59 years; son, Paul Mendez and wife, Georgianne of Corrales; daughters, Lucy Martinez and husband, Don, and Marie Apodaca and husband, Joe, both of Albuquerque; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four brothers and one sister, all of the San Francisco Bay area. Manuel E. ( "Manny ") passed away peacefully at home in Parker, CO on June 7, 2003 after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; a daughter, Susan Osborne and family of Kailua, HI; sisters, Vi Taylor of Albuquerque and Diana Nelson, her husband, Paul and son, Kevin, of College Station, TX; his step-children, Nannette Goldberg and William Eckhardt, and families, of Denver; his maternal aunt, Lena Laney of Portland, OR; niece, Yvonne Gonzales and nephews, John and Matthew Sandoval, and families, all of Albuquerque. He was preceded in death by his parents, J.J. and Dora Sandoval; a son, Steven; and his brother, Pat. Manuel was born in Trinidad, CO and grew up in Cimarron, NM. He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during WWII. He lived in Taos before moving to Albuquerque, where he was employed by Maloof's Quality Import for 38 years. He retired seven years ago. Aryeh "Cody" Sherr of San Francisco, California. Born August 11, 1974 in Santa Fe, NM, passed away suddenly on June 9, 2003 in Reno, NV. Cody was training for a fund-raising event for leukemia research at the time of his tragic accident. Cody was a vibrant, talented bicyclist, bicycle mechanic and brilliant software engineer who worked at Covalent Technologies. He is survived by his mother, Laurel Sherr of Santa Fe; brothers, Jesse and Dante Sherr, both of Albuquerque; grandmothers, Judy Sherr and Janet Susco; his loved girlfriend, Shawna Valenta; and many wonderful aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends. Robert Gadsby Shreffler died in San Antonio, Texas on June 10, 2003. Scholar, diplomat, scientist and family man, he is pre-deceased by his parents, Robert and Ruth Gadsby Shreffler; and his son, Peter William Shreffler. Dr. Shreffler served as a naval officer in the second world war. He studied mathematics, geology and nuclear physics and spent most of his career as a scientist at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. In the late 1960s he became the first Nuclear Planning Director of NATO in Brussels, Belgium. Afterwards he returned to Santa Fe with his wife, Laura Peterson, and then moved to Texas in 1998. Robert Shreffler is survived by his wife of 62 years; his children, Jane Shreffler of Santa Fe, Mark and Beth Shreffler of Clearwater, FL, and Sara Eyestone and David Molin of San Antonio; as well as a large, loving extended family and a community of friends. In keeping with his wishes, there will be no Funeral or Memorial Service. In lieu of flowers, his family prefers that you make a donation to the charity of your choice in his name. Robert Judd Sickels a resident of Albuquerque died June 12, 2003 at the age of 71. He is survived by his wife, Alice; son, Stephen of Virginia; daughter, Wendy and her children, Kate and Ben of California; and sister, Jane of New York. He grew up in New York State, earned a BA at the University of Chicago and a Ph.D. in political science at Johns Hopkins University. In 1963-64, he served in the Kennedy administration as assistant staff director of the Presidents Commission on Registration and Voting Participation. He learned and loved to fly, and once half-seriously responded to an ad for bush pilots in Ontario, where he and Alice often spent summers by the water, but alas he was over 30 and too old to enlist. He taught for a time at Purdue University, but was urged by a wise friend to abandon the flatlands of Indiana for the mountains and rivers of New Mexico. He taught at the University of New Mexico one summer and a year later in 1968, joined the political science department for good. He offered classes in politics, the presidency, and constitutional law, and at one time or another chaired the department, the Post-Tenure Review Task Force, and the Academic Freedom and Tenure Committee. He was the author of book reviews and of articles that appeared in the "American Political Science Review", the "Yale Law Journal" and the "New Republic" among others. He wrote four books: "Race, Marriage and the Law", "Presidential Transactions", "The Presidency" and "John Paul Stevens and the Constitution", his favorite. He enjoyed reading to children at UNM Hospital, being a Big Brother, and delivering hot food in the Meals on Wheels program until Alzheimer's began to play tricks with his road maps. He will be missed by his family, friends, and faithful dog, Molly. A Family Memorial is planned for a later date.

Fita Zamora passed away on June 7, 2003. A longtime resident of Albuquerque, she is survived by her husband, Luiz Zamora; two sisters, and one brother, Cora Peralta, Neno Peralta, Flolipe Montano; two sons and one daughter, Donald and Berlinda Peralta, Geraldine and Vincent Valverde, Gilbert and Matilda Zamora; 12 grandkids; and 13 great-grandkids. Services will be held Sunday at 7:00 p.m. at San Jose Church. Viewing from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

LAWRIE EATON, 54, of Los Alamos, died Tuesday at his home surrounded by his family, after a 10-year battle with lung cancer. He was born Sept. 17, 1948, in Bar Harbor, Maine. He graduated from the University of Maine at Orono with bachelor's and master's degrees in electrical engineering, and a master's degree in business administration from St. Mary's College in California. He joined Los Alamos National Lab in 1986 as a staff member in AT-5, the Radio Frequency Power group in the Accelerator Technology Division. He became the group leader to lead the group through an exciting period of work on Star Wars projects, including the ground test accelerator, the beam experiment aboard a rocket and free electron lasers. He started as a staff member in what is now LANSCE-5 and soon became group leader. As LANSCE-5 group leader, he led the Radio Frequency Systems efforts for GTA, BEAR and the FEL projects until he was diagnosed with lung cancer in 1993. After beating the cancer into remission, he returned as a staff member in the Tritium Science and Engineering group in the Engineering Sciences and Engineering Division, which operates tritium facilities at Tech Areas 16 and 21. Once again, he soon became the group leader. He led ESA-TSE through an important time of melding the culture of supporting national security and the nuclear weapons program with that of supporting fusion energy applications. He had a great appreciation for the talent and enthusiasm of the TSE employees and believed it was his job to make their jobs easier and more enjoyable. He had a 'delegate and stand back' (Lead, follow or get out of the way) management style that fostered the admiration of his group members. He is survived by his wife Cindy; daughters, Jill, Kris and Jennifer; brothers, Rob and Marshall; and other relatives. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Los Alamos followed by a reception lunch in the Parish Hall. LORRAINE E. ESQUIBEL, 57, of Las Vegas, N.M., died Wednesday at her home following an extended illness. She was born in Las Vegas, N.M., on June 21, 1945, to Ramon Garduno and Euphelia Gonzales Garduno. She was united in marriage in Las Vegas, N.M., on Feb. 12, 1971, to Robert L. Esquibel. She retired in 1997 from the Las Vegas Medical Center, where she was employed as a licensed practical nurse for 13 years. A lifelong Catholic, she was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Church. She is survived by her husband, Robert L. Esquibel of the family home in Las Vegas, N.M.; daughter, Amanda Esquibel-Chavez and husband Hilario of Rio Rancho; son, Adrian Esquibel and girlfriend, Melissa Casias, both of Las Vegas, N.M.; one grandson; parents, Ramon and Euphelia Garduno of Las Vegas, N.M.; sisters, Patricia McGahie and husband Rick, and Caroline Lopez and husband Jesus, all of Las Vegas, N.M.; and many other relatives and friends. Cremation has taken place. Rosary devotional services will be held at 7 p.m. today at Our Lady of Sorrows Church. TIMOTHY M. LADD of Santa Fe and formerly of Duxbury, Mass., died Monday. As a youth, he was active in the Duxbury Yacht Club, earning many awards as a sailor and a Massachusetts junior tennis champion. He graduated from St. Sebastian's Country Day School in Newton, Mass., where he had an outstanding athletic career that included football and baseball, and being recognized as a high scorer in New England high school hockey. After graduating from Harvard College, he served in the U.S. Army, receiving an honorable discharge as a Vietnam-era veteran. During his 30 years in Santa Fe, he worked as an independent craftsman, specializing in woodworking. He also continued to make his signature Timothy Candles, a business he started in Boston after his discharge from the army. In the last decade, he made them only to give to strangers as a gesture of friendship. He was the son of the late Merlin and Joy Ladd. He was preceded in death by his brother, Parker Ladd, and his wife, Susie, of Bedford, N.H. He is survived by his brother, Nathaniel, and his wife Linda of Belmont, Mass.; his brother, Merlin 'Terry', and his wife Susan of Buzzards Bay, Mass.; his sister, Joy Sawyer, and her husband Richard of Wickford, R.I.; his sister, Cynthia Ladd Fiorini, and her husband Richard of Duxbury; and many other relatives. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church, 842 Tremont St., (Rt 3A) Duxbury, Mass. JOSEPHINE MARTINEZ LOBATO, 82, died Tuesday at her home in Rociada. She was born to Celestino Celso Martinez and Juanita Sanchez Martinez on Aug. 28, 1920, in Rociada. She was united in marriage at the Immaculate Conception Church on July 16, 1955, to the late John Lobato. She taught elementary school for 35 years with the San Miguel County School System and retired from the Las Vegas City Schools in 1976. She worked as a riveter during World War II in Los Angeles, after which she returned to New Mexico and attended New Mexico Highlands University. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Lobato; parents, Celestino and Juanita Martinez; sister, Eva Atencio, and brother-in-law, Willie; and brother, Lucio Martinez, and sister-in-law, Priscilla. She is survived by her brother, Leopoldo L. Martinez, and wife Mary Jo of Las Vegas, N.M.; sister, Virginia Rubio, of Rociada; brother, Lorenzo Martinez, and wife Molly of Hayward, Calif; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Santo Nino Church in Rociada. Cremation has taken place, and interment of the cremains will follow at the Santo Nino Cemetery in Rociada. JOSE L. LOVATO, 73, of El Cañyon de Lovato in Mora County, died Tuesday while working at his ranch in Guadalupita. After working for the Postal Service for many years in California, he and his wife Patricia moved back to Holman upon his retirement. He was preceded in death by his parents, Candido and Delfinia Lovato; and his brothers, Levi and Charles Lovato. He is survived by his wife, Patricia, of the family home in Holman; stepdaughter, Siobhan Strott, of La Jolla, Calif.; sisters, Angela Therse and Mary Joseph, both of Las Mesa, Calif.; brothers, Phillip Lovato and wife Josie of Stockton, Calif., Benito Lovato and friend Erlinda of Stockton, Calif., Filadelfio Lovato and wife Danielle of Stockton, Calif., Jose Maria Lovato and wife Cathy of Redding, Calif, Daniel Lovato and wife Judy of Tacoma, Wash., Frankie Lovato of Sydney, Australia, and Andrew Lovato of Grass Valley, Calif.; and many other relatives and friends. HALEEN M. PRZEKLASA, 52, of Los Alamos, died unexpectedly Monday. She married Roy Przeklasa on Sept. 21, 1976, in Las Vegas, Nev. She was preceded in death by her father, Harold Ford; mother, Shirley Martinez; brother, Wesley Ford. She is survived by her husband, Roy Przeklasa of Los Alamos; sister, Laura Ford of Los Angeles; nephew, Shawn Bendixen of San Bernardino, Calif.; and many other relatives and friends. DENNIS SMITH, 84, of Velarde, died Wednesday following a short illness. He was preceded in death by his wife and mother of his children, Marjorie Smith; sons, Loren and Donald; grandson, Patrick Benavidez; father and mother, Henry and Elizabeth; brother, Lloyd Smith; sisters, Emma Koehn and Ruby Dicks; and son-in-law, Tony Benavidez. In his early days, he was a farmer in central Kansas. He was widely known in the Española Valley as 'Smitty.' He was the owner of Smitty's Mobile Home Service. He is survived by his daughters, Doreen Benavidez of Albuquerque, Clorinda Fadness and husband Clint of Colorado Springs, Barbara Smith-Horn and husband James of St. Augustine, Fla., Willa Meyers and husband Denny of Mesa, Ariz., and Truna Elaine Davidson and husband Brett of Scottsdale, Ariz.; son, Victor Smith of Los Luceros; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brothers, Davey Smith and wife Dena, and Eldon Smith and wife Pearl; sisters, Mildred and Malina Dirks, and Luvina Koehn; and many other relatives and friends. Fred R. Apodaca, 71, passed away at home June 6, 1999. He is survived by his wife, Ruth; daughter, Nancy Loucks and husband, Casey of Omaha, NE; sister, Della Rivera and husband, Manuel of Rio Rancho; brother, Bill Montoya and wife, Eva of Omaha, NE; daughter-in-law, Alicia Apodaca of San Diego, CA; sister-in-law, Jean Fornoff of Albuquerque; and grandchildren, Kurtis, Leyna and Eric of Omaha, NE and Ashlee and Myles of San Diego, CA. Fred was preceded in death by his beloved son, Mark Apodaca of San Diego, CA; one brother; and one sister. Fred was a lifetime member of the Optimist International Service Organization and was Distinguished Governor of the Nebraska District, followed by one year as International Vice President of the OISO. The family will greet visitors from 6:30 p.m. Rosary will be recited Friday, June 11, 1999, 7:30 p.m., at Hillcrest Funeral Home. Memorial Mass will be celebrated Saturday, June 12, 1999, 10:00 a.m., at Prince of Peace Catholic Church. All Albuquerque Optimist Club members in attendance will serve as honorary pallbearers. Kenneth V. Atkisson, 87, a longtime resident of Albuquerque, passed away Monday, June 7, 1999. He is survived by his daughters, Kendra Longfellow of Albuquerque and Gayle Salyer and husband, Bob of Ames, IA; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Ken was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Cremation has taken place, at his request, no memorial services will be held. Cremation arrangements by Direct Funeral Services, 2919 4th St. NW, 505-343-8008.

George Price Ball passed away at his home in Albuquerque June 8, 1999 after a long illness. He was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey on July 29, 1909. As a child he resided in Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, New York, and Florida, and as an adult in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Louisiana, and New Mexico. He moved to Albuquerque in 1947, and went into business as Ball Metal Products. He will be remembered as "Pappy Ball" at the Duke City Race Way where he raced his last race at age 79. It was a third generation race including his son Steve and Steve's son, Tom. He is survived by his sons, Stephen T. Ball and wife, Marian of Albuquerque, Anthony J. Ball and wife, Sheila of West Jordan, Utah; and daughter, Sandra Ball Hall and husband, John of Albuquerque. He had 14 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother, William Ball of West Chester, Pennsylvania, and several nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 11, 1999 at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 8130 Sage Rd. SW. Arrangements by Direct Funeral Services, 2919 4th St. NW. 343-8008.

Fern Fontaine (Mimi), 87, a resident of Albuquerque for the past 21 years, peacefully went home to be with Jesus Christ, Our Lord and Saviour" on June 8, 1999. Born in Cassville, Missouri on January 1, 1912. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Jessie Watson Box in 1982. They are survived by two sons, Wesley Box of Albuquerque, J.L. Box and wife, Gena of Bryan, Texas; a daughter, Marylin Snider of Albuquerque; four granddaughters, Tamara and husband, Ted Greve of Irvine, CA, Tracee Box of Albuquerque, Molly Snider of Albuquerque, Ashley Box of Bryan, Texas; two great-grandchildren, Beau and Danielle Billings, children of Tracee. She is also survived by a brother, James Linn of Monahans, Texas; a beloved brother-in-law, Eugene Branson of Houston, Texas; numerous nieces and nephews across the U.S., from Florida to Washington. In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be Friday, June 11, 1999 at 4:00 p.m. at Victory Love Fellowship, 7201 Central NW. In lieu of flowers, Mimi requested donations be made to: Mountain Top Ministries, PO Box 23123, Houston, Texas 77228.
