Veronica (Vera) Tenorio went home to be with the Lord on May 31, 2002. She was born on March 23, 1918. Vera was a life time resident of Albuquerque. She grew up in Los Ranchos N.W. Albuquerque and later moved to the South Valley. During the war Vera worked at Kirtland as a mechanic in the wings of the aircraft. After the war Vera received her cosmetologist license and had her own business for over thirty years, the last shop was at the Northdale Shopping Center. During her early years she worked on the Simms Ranch as an assistant cook and has always loved cooking. She is remembered by all as always wanting to serve others. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ambrosio and Sophie Chavez, sister, Angie C De Baca and Phil (Feliberto) Chavez. She is survived by her spouse of sixty years Tony Tenorio; daughter, Liz Romero, son-in-law, Edward L. Romero; granddaughters, Ursula R. Behiel and Celeste Romero; son-in-law, Dave Behiel; great-grandchildren, Melina and Mason Behiel; sister, Tillie Faye Chavez; foster daughters, Lydia (Cuqui) Apodaca and Carmen San Emeterio, and numerous nieces and nephews. Vera will be deeply missed by her loving family. Visitations will be held today from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Eighth Street Chapel of Garcia Mortuary with a Rosary to be recited following at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at the Church of the Ascension at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Dave Behiel, Ruben Rivera, Cajetano Romero, Chuy Martinez, Kenny Martinez and Robert Muriel. Honorary pallbearer will be Andrew Muriel. Services are in the care of Garcia Mortuary, 717 Stover Ave. S.W. 243-5222.

Nellie Faye Thorne, age 86, a resident of Albuquerque since 1970, passed away in her sleep, early Wednesday morning, May 29, 2002. She was preceded in death in 1989, by her husband of 54 years, Joseph W. Thorne. She is survived by her two children, Billy Joe Thorne of Albuquerque and Sue Welsh of Gilbertsville, PA, as well as eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was born Nellie Faye Claiborne in Chanute, KS on April 27, 1916, where she grew up the only child of Hogan Bert and Nellie Louise Claiborne. After graduating from Chanute High School she attended beauty school and was working as a beautician when a handsome farm hand that worked for her uncle asked for her hand. After marrying Joe, in 1935, they moved to Wellington, KS where she raised two children while Joe worked for the Santa Fe Railroad as a brakeman and conductor. After Joe's retirement in 1970, they moved to Albuquerque to live with their son, Billy, his wife, Linda and their four children. Nellie played a big part in helping to raise her grandchildren to whom she was a model of calm understanding, and a source of unconditional love. Nellie loved music and enjoyed playing both piano and organ for friends and family. She was also a prolific crocheter and knitter and kept everyone she loved warm with afghans and knitted house-slippers. Nellie loved to cook for others (her fried chicken was the best in the world), and she was an active member of the local Over-Eaters Anonymous, a group she supported with many hours of dedicated service. Nellie will be remembered by those who love her as a giving soul, with indomitable cheer,
and a determined spirit in good times or bad. Her warm smile and generous hugs will be missed by all who knew her. A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, June 2, 2002, at 3:00 p.m., at Monte Vista Christian Church, 3501 Campus Blvd. NE. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Nellie's memory to the Alzheimer's Association, 8100 Mountain Road NE, Suite 102, 87110, to support research towards a cure for the disease that stole the last five years of her life. William Penfield Walton 87, beloved husband of Dorothy Landis Thompson Walton passed away on May 25, 2002 after a lengthy illness. Born 1915 in Oneida, NY, Bill graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University. He received a graduate degree in Community Organization from Ohio State University. He was then employed in his field in Cleveland, Ohio, and in 1954 he moved to Cincinnati, Ohio and was Director of the Council of Social Agencies for the United Appeal of the Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky Area. In 1974 Bill and Dorothy retired and moved to Marco Island, Florida. Bill volunteered as President of Collier County Council on Aging in Naples, Florida. He formulated the Meals on Wheels program for the county and encouraged the development of many other services for the aging. In 1980, they relocated to Albuquerque, New Mexico. Bill is survived by his wife, Dorothy; son, Bryan and wife, Fanou Walton of Spring Green, Wisconsin; step-children, Michael and wife, Katherine Thompson of Wilmington, North Carolina, Judith and husband, Richard Devereaux of Tucson, Arizona, Jeffrey and Cynthia Clark Thompson of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Susan and husband, Mark Ritz of Anchorage, Alaska, William and wife, Laura Houck of St. Louis Missouri. There are 17 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Cremation has taken place, and the family will have a Private Memorial Service with his cremains to be placed in Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati, Ohio. Eula M. Wernz, age 84, passed away May 29, 2002 in Snowflake, AZ. She was born in Nevada and moved with her family often. They finally settled in Albuquerque in 1936. Eula married Robert J. Wernz in 1940 and together they raised their family in Albuquerque. The were married 54 years when Robert passed away in 1994. They particularly enjoyed sight seeing trips and often spent time at their retreat in the mountains. She will be remembered by many for the sewing and crocheting she did for them. She is survived by three children, Addie Novaria of Show Low, AZ, William Wernz (Terri) of San Antonio, TX and Carrie Wiley (Steve) of Albuquerque; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Oscar Turner; and one sister, Ilene Kennedy. She was also preceded in death by one grandson; and two brothers. There will be a Graveside Service at 11:00 a.m., Monday June 3, 2002 at Sunset Memorial Park in Albuquerque with a visitation one hour prior to Services. Dr. Richard E. Whalen, Jr., 80, a resident of Albuquerque, born on December 4, 1921, died Thursday, May 30, 2002. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Magdalen Whalen of Albuquerque; son, Timothy H. Whalen of Albuquerque; daughter, Madalyn Sheldon of Silver Springs, MD; son, Richard E. Whalen, III of Silver Spring, MD; sisters, Patricia Konyo and Mickey R. Cattanea, both of Belleville, IL; and four grandchildren, Kevin and Ryan Whalen of Albuquerque; Kathryn Sheldon and Devin Whalen, both of Silver Springs, MD. Born in Carbondale, IL, Richard earned the Bronze Star during WWII while serving as head scout for the 289th Infantry Division. He later went on to earn his Bachelor's degree at Southern Ilinois University, and his Master's at the University of Mississippi, and a Doctorate at Indiana University. After serving as a professor at Bradley University, Richard Whalen was appointed first president of Black Hawk College in Moline, IL. He later served as Dean of Students at Dickinson State (ND) and Highlands Universities (NM). Services will be held Tuesday, June 4, 2002, 9:00 a.m., at French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE. Interment will follow at 12:00 noon, at Santa Fe National Cemetery.

Mabel T. Winch, age 80. A resident of Tijeras since 1971 passed away Saturday, May 25, 2002. Mabel is survived by Bill, her husband of 56 years; two children, Christopher Winch and Kathleen Johnson; three grandchildren, Christopher Johnson, Ryan Winch and Tyler Winch. Mabel was born in Astoria, New York. She was an executive secretary for Union Carbide and a loving homemaker, wife and mother. In lieu of flowers, a donation to NM Chapter of Alzheimers Association, 8100 Mountain Road NE, Suite 102, Albuquerque, NM 87110. There will be a private memorial service for the family.

ANGELO GRECO DOMINIC GARCIA, 30, of Santa Fe, died Thursday. He was employed as a mechanical technician for Joe Horace Dodge. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ben and Isabell Ortega of Tesuque. He is survived by his mother, Irene Mancha and husband Gil; father, Robert Daniel Garcia; daughter, Cherise Maestas Garcia; brother, Gilbert Mancha and wife Melissa Lopez; sister, Paula Lira and husband Adolfo; fiance, Jan Chavez; five nieces and nephews, and many other relatives. A memorial mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Berardinelli Family Funeral Service.

IRENE B. MONTOYA, 88, of Santa Fe, died Thursday following as lengthy illness. She was a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church and La Union Protectiva. She was preceded in death by her parents, Manuel and Agapita Barela; husband, Rafael Montoya and son, Arturo Montoya. She is survived by her sons, Delfino Montoya and wife Susana, John L. Montoya and wife Anita, Patricio Montoya, and Joe A. Montoya and wife Marcella; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives. Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. Monday where a rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. at St. Anne's Catholic Church. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Anne Catholic Church. WILLIAM 'BILL' D. PETTY, 48, of Glendale, Ariz., died May 25. He graduated from Los Alamos High school in 1971 and served in the U.S. Army in Germany from 1971 to 1974. He received his pharmaceutical degree from the University of New Mexico in 1979. He was last employed at Safeway in Phoenix. He was also employed in the Los Alamos and White Rock area for many years before moving to Phoenix in 1990 and had recently been invited to become a professor at Glendale Community College. He is survived by his father, Roy Petty of Santa Fe; mother, Carol Showers of Albuquerque; stepfather, William Showers of Albuquerque; daughter, Melanie Romero of Santa Fe; son, Richard Petty of White Rock; sisters, Lee Ann Waterman and husband Ted of Albuquerque, Dea Renfro of Albuquerque, and Sue Harper and husband Ron of Los Alamos; two grandchildren; and many other relatives. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity on the Hill Episcopal Church in Los Alamos. Burial will follow in Guaje Pines. Robert (Wedo) Aragon, age 57, beloved husband, father, and brother was welcomed into the arms of the Lord our Savior, Wednesday, May 28, 2003. Robert was a resident of Bernalillo; a parishioner of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church; and a proud Vietnam Veteran of the United States Army. Robert is survived by his loving wife, Georgina Aragon of the family home; his precious daughter, Belinda Aragon; one brother Desi Aragon and Gina of Albuquerque; four sisters, Bernie Lopez and husband, Nazareno of Alameda, Minie Salazar and husband, Gilbert of Bernalillo, Elma Garcia of Jarales, NM, Rachel Aragon of Albuquerque; other relatives and friends. Chloe Coffman was born Wannie Chloe Caughran, December 5, 1913 in Munday, TX. She was particularly fond of sharing the fact that she and her family moved to Grady, New Mexico when she was 18 months old in a covered wagon. She married Morton Coffman on December 24, 1939. They moved to Dove Creek, Colorado where she worked with her husband farming, ranching and living off the land. She was also an elementary school teacher for 32 years. She lived in Albuquerque for the last eight years. Chloe was very active in the community and in the Methodist Church her entire life. She was loved and respected by her family, students, and friends. Chloe was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and one brother. She is survived by her brother, Virgil Caughran and his wife, Elsie of Albuquerque; her daughter, Barbara Woodward and her husband, Bob of Albuquerque; her son, Leroy Coffman and his wife, Carol of Tallahasee, Florida; many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Chloe was a wonderful, kind and fun lady with an endless, angelic disposition. She will be deeply missed by all of us. Private family services will take place at Sunset Memorial Park. Mary M. Edwards, 91, a resident of Albuquerque since 1957, died Thursday, May 29, 2003. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Grover W. Edwards of Albuquerque; and stepbrother, Donald Cox of Dayton, OH. Mrs. Edwards was employed with the Air Force and Department of Energy for 27 years before retiring. Donald C. Lucero, 70, a long time resident of Albuquerque, died Thursday, May 29, 2003. He is survived by his wife, Mae, his son, Robert and wife, Shannon Lucero, grandchildren, Jolene and Gavin, his daughter, Alice and husband Mark McCrea, grandchildren, Jeffrey and Dawnn, his son, Johnny Lucero, and granddaughter Jennifer, and his daughter, Donna and husband, James Saya, and granddaughter, Rachel. He is preceded in death by his little angel, Kristen, his granddaughter. Donald grew up at St. Anthony's Boy School. He served in the United States Navy for 20 years and retired with honors. Martha Mills, 77, a resident of Albuquerque since 1952, died Thursday, May 29, 2003. She is survived by her husband, Easton E. Mills of Albuquerque; daughter, Janet C. de Baca of Rio Rancho; son, Craig Easton Mills of Columbus, OH; four granddaughters, Alicia Sharpe and husband, Jason, Marina Mills all of Albuquerque; Ariel Mills and Alima Mills of Santa Fe; two grandsons, Christopher C. de Baca and wife, Theresa of White Rock, NM and Andrew Joel Mills of Albuquerque; and her dog, Lovey. Mildred L. Saylor, 93, died on Saturday, May 31, 2003, in Festus, MO. Mildred was the beloved wife of the late, Levi E. Saylor; loving mother of Anita Sims; grandmother of Lisa Matthews and Scott Simms; and our dear great-grandmother, aunt and friend. Emry Daniel Swope, 89, died at his home on Saturday May 31, 2003. He was born on April 6, 1914, in Knobnoster, MO, to the late Daniel and Willie Swope. The family moved later that year to Mountainair to homestead. Emry had to go to work at an early age to help support the family after his father was killed in an automobile accident. His first jobs included farming and working at the Mountainair bean elevator.
Emry married Opal Green on May 31, 1941. Shortly after their wedding, they moved to Santa Monica, CA, where Emry contributed to the war effort by working for Douglas Aircraft. They were asked to return to Mountainair two years later to help Opal's parents on their farm. Emry and Opal purchased their own farm and produced pinto beans until 1953. During that time, they had two children, Helen and Clifton.
Beginning in 1953, Emery worked various construction jobs that took the family to Santa Fe, Carlsbad, Las Cruces, and El Paso, TX. They returned to Mountainair in 1957, and Emery went to work for the State Highway Department. He retired in 1982 after 25 years of service. He and Opal have lived in Belen since 1967 and have been active in their local church.
Emry in survived by Opal, his wife of 62 years; his daughter and her husband, Helen and Newton Floyd; and his son, Clifton all of Belen. He also is survived by his grandson and his wife, Randall and Cindy Floyd, and their children, Michael and Christopher, of San Ysidro, and Richard Barksdale of Aztec; his grandson, Tim Floyd of Denver, CO; and numerous nephews, nieces, and friends. In addition to his parents, Emry was preceded in death by three brothers; and four sisters.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at Harris-Hanlon Mortuary in Mountainair, NM. Emry's grandsons, Rev. Randall Floyd and Tim Floyd, and Rev. Jim Wilburn will officiate. Burial will follow at the Mountainair Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Kevin Harris, Kerry Harris, Kent Harris, Timothy Swope, Jamie Swope, Tim Floyd, and Jimmy Sullinger. Joseph Louis Hoffman, 88 a resident of Albuquerque for 22 years, died Monday, May 31, 1999. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Bertha; daughter, Joan Warner, and husband, George of Aztec, NM; son, Joseph Hoffman and wife, Cecilia of Albuquerque; granddaughters, Deborah Henley of Albuquerque, Joanne Adams, of Dunnellen, FL, Tracey Jordan of Estancia, NM, and Lisa Dunkle of Hillsboro, OR; grandsons, George Warner of Aztec, NM; William Hoffman of Hendersonville, NC, and James Hoffman of Albuquerque; brother, John Hoffman of New Port Richey, FL; and 12 great grandchildren. Joe Archibeque, 84, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away May 28, 1999 suddenly in a local hospital. He is survived by four sons, Arturo Archibeque and wife, Barbara, Marvin Archibeque and wife, Stella, Orlando Archibeque, and Robert Archibeque; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Conrad Archibeque, and Alex Archibeque and wife, Carmen; two sisters, Lucy Vigil and husband, Eulogio, Irene Montoya and husband, John. Also surviving is his grandson with whom he lived, Ronnie Archibeque and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Placida Archibeque. Mr. Archibeque was an Auditor for the State Bureau of Revenue. He spoke Navajo and the Pueblo languages and was self-taught. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated this morning at 10:00 a.m. also at St. Therese Catholic Church. Interment to follow at the Vista Verde Memorial Park. Elsie Viola Boxberger, May 28, 1924-May 28, 1999. Elsie has gone to the loving arms of our Lord, exactly 75 years after her birth to Sam & Molly Wagner of Otis, Kansas. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Ann Burns and partner, Robert; son, Kurtis R. Boxberger and partner, Rebecca Hall; grandsons, Greg Chavez and wife, Rachel and Michael Chavez; granddaughter, Shannon Burns Lee and husband, Jeffrey; great grandchildren, Gregory Steven Chavez and Taylor Riley Chavez, Katherine (Chavez) Eichman, and special granddaughters, Allison, Alisha, and Aliana Hall; brothers, Raymond Wagner and wife, Viola, Paul Wagner and wife, Mary, Harold Wagner and wife, Norma, and Norman Wagner and wife, Lois; sister, Arlene Maier; and her constant companions, Misty and Scotty. She was preceded in death by her husband, Emil Boxberger, 1983; and son, Richard Lynn Boxberger, 1949. She fought a valiant battle to regain use of her body and speech following an automobile accident in November 1998, but was unable to overcome the damage caused by cancer. Elsie was loved by her many friends at Digital Equipment Corporation where she worked for 18 years. She leaves a large family who will miss her terribly, her smile, laughter, hugs and understanding and unlimited love. All who knew her will remember her being the most happy at cooking and serving the wonderful foods we all enjoyed so much. She also enjoyed good time with neighbors and friends.
