John Vernon Gossett, 85, passed away on May 31, 2000 in San Diego, CA. He was born in Dawson, NM on March 25, 1915 and lived in Albuquerque for 57 years. He was married to Lorena Forbes Gossett. He owned Talley Bros. Chevron Station at 4th & Lomas and later worked at Albuquerque Pawn Shop. He was a former member of the Montgomery Church of Christ. He is survived by one daughter, Patti Rolla, son-in-law, Richard Rolla, and grandson, Ryan Rolla, all of San Diego, CA; and one sister, Margaret Brown of Espanola, NM. Services will be held Friday, June 23, 2000 at 2:30 p.m. at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe. Donations to American Cancer Society.

Lorena Forbes Gossett, 80, passed away on May 24, 2000 in San Diego, CA. She was born April 5, 1920 in Tucumcari, NM. A resident of Albuquerque for 40 years, she was married to John Vernon Gossett and passed away one week before he did due to complications of Alzheimer's. She worked as a bookkeeper at her husband's service station. She was a former member of Montgomery Church of Christ. She is survived by one daughter, Patti Rolla, son-in-law, Richard Rolla, and grandson, Ryan Rolla, all of San Diego CA; and two brothers, Bob Forbes of Alamo, TX and Buford Forbes of Georgetown, TX. Services will be held Friday, June 23, 2000 at 2:30 p.m., at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe, NM. Donations to Alzheimer's Assn.

Epifanio T. Griego, April 23, 1927 - June 19, 2000, a resident of Roswell, passed away early afternoon at the Veterans Hospital in Albuquerque. Mr. Griego served his country in the US Navy aboard the USS Henry R. Kenyon during WWII. He was preceded in death by his parents, Celso and Carolina Griego. He is survived by many loving immediate and extended family. A visitation will be held at Salazar & Sons Mortuary, located on Third St. and Lead, in Albuquerque, on June 23, from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church at 4020 Lomas NE, on June 24, at 9:30 a.m. Interment will follow at the New Mexico National Cemetery in Santa Fe at 12:00 p.m. Pallbearers will be his grandsons. Arrangements by Salazar & Sons Mortuary, 400 Third St. SW.

A Memorial service was held Saturday, June 17 to celebrate the life of Walter Herrmann. He was born May 2, 1930 in Johannesburg, South Africa, and died June 4, 2000 while under Hospice care in Albuquerque. He was the only child born to Gottlob Fredrich Herrmann, hotel proprietor and Gertrud Louise Herrmann (nee Ratzlaff). Herrmann received both his undergraduate (1953) and Ph.D. (1955) degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Witwatersrand University in South Africa, and completed post-doctoral work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He taught Mechanical Engineering at the University of Cape Town for two years until 1957, when Dr. Herrmann was invited to return to MIT to work as a researcher in the Cold War effort. In 1964, Dr. Herrmann moved to Albuquerque to work at Sandia National Laboratory, attaining the position of Director of Engineering Science. During his career he published about 200 technical papers and presented his research at symposiums around the world. He was inducted into the US National Academy of Engineering in 1993, and retired that same year. He married Betty Lorraine Allard in 1955 with whom he raised two children, a daughter, Inga and son, Peter before divorcing in 1983. In 1988, Dr. Herrmann married Ednarae Bligh Gross, who preceded him in death in 1996. During their short life together Walter and Ednarae traveled extensively, and took up SCUBA diving. Dr. Herrmann was an accomplished skier, mountaineer, and cyclist, and he enjoyed river rafting and SCUBA diving. He volunteered for many years with mountain rescue in New Mexico and in his retirement was an active volunteer for the New Mexico Museum of Natural History, and served as a docent at archaeological sites in southern Colorado. He was a member of the Grey Wolves and the Prime Time Gang. Throughout his life, Dr. Herrmann was an avid traveler, and in his later years, he developed a passion for tall ships and sailing, and archaeology. Survivors include his children, Inga and Peter; step-sons, Allan and Jeffrey Gross, all of Albuquerque; a step-daughter, Janis Gross of Longmont, CO; grandchildren, Rishar, Mariah, and Joshua; and his former wife, Betty Lorraine Allard Herrmann of Albuquerque. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Walter Herrmann Memorial Fund at the Rio Grande Zoological Park, 903 10th SW, Albuquerque 87102, funds raised will benefit future construction of the African exhibit.

Canon William W. Hollis, 64, a resident of Albuquerque, went home to be with our Lord and Savior on Monday, June 19, 2000. Bill is survived by his wife, Chris; two children, Elizabeth Ann Hollis Scales and William Kirk Hollis; their spouses, Stephen G. Scales Jr. and Rebecca Vincent Hollis; four grandchildren, S.G. Scales, Samantha Scales, Shelby Hollis, and Robyn Hollis; his mother, Margaret Hollis; sister, Helen Cherry; brothers, Joe Hollis and Neil Hollis and extended family and friends. Bill was born on June 6, 1936 in Hollis, Oklahoma. He received his college degrees at Cameron State Agricultural College and Oklahoma State University, obtaining a Bachelors and Masters in Accounting. He served his country in the Army following completion of college. His career included working at Fort Lewis College, Durango, Colorado as a Professor and Assistant Dean of Faculty, executive for Great Western Land and Cattle Company and several positions at Sandia National Laboratory. Bill and his wife, Chris, have been deeply involved in the Episcopal Church both in Durango and Albuquerque. Upon his retirement from Sandia, he continued his commitment to Christ, serving as the Bishop's Executive. In October of 1998 he was appointed Canon by the Rt. Rev. Dr. Bishop Terence Kelshaw and the Rt. Rev. Bishop Maurice Benitez. A Memorial service will be held Saturday, June 24, 2000, 11:00 a.m., at the Cathedral Church of St. John, 318 Silver SW, Albuquerque. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Diocese of the Rio Grande, in memory of Canon Bill Hollis. Sunrise Society is serving the family of Canon Hollis, (891-8200).

Phillip Lucero, 56, was carried home by God's angels on Friday, June 16, 2000 in Albuquerque. He was born on November 4, 1943 in Socorro to Felipe and Romelia (Naranjo) Lucero, who preceded him in death. Phillip was a kind and loving man and will be dearly missed. He is survived by his sisters, Sonja L. O'Brien of Socorro, Geraldine Minitrez of Magdalena, Louisa Lucero, Rosalie Holder and Barbara Morriss, all of Albuquerque, and Sandra Hayes of Raytown, MO; nephews, Willie, Danny, Sergio Morris, Bobby Dean and Phillip Eugene; nieces, Joanna, Margaret, Anna, Bedelia, Camille, Joelle, Jordan, Francine and Michelle. Visitation will be held on Monday, June 19, 2000, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., at Steadman- Hall Funeral Home. Graveside services will be immediately following at the San Miguel Cemetery with Minister Annie Rincon officiating. Wendy Lucero, age 28, a resident of Los Lunas, died June 19, 2000. Visitation will be held Thursday, June 22, 2000, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., in the Palm Chapel of Strong-Thorne Mortuary, 1100 Coal Ave. SE. Faustin Martinez, a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, was called to take his place in Heaven by our Lord. He is survived by his wife, Thelma; daughter, Shirley and husband, John; two granddaughters; and numerous relatives and friends. Victor J. Martinez, 70, a resident of Albuquerque, died Monday, June 19, 2000. He is survived by his loving wife, Helen Martinez; five sons, Jerry Martinez, Thomas Martinez, Robert Martinez, Richard Martinez and Aaron Martinez; and one daughter, Laura Martinez. Mr. Martinez was a veteran of both the Korean War and Vietnam War, and he served his country proudly. Cremation has taken place and graveside services will be held Friday, 1:30 p.m., at Santa Fe National Cemetery, with Rev. Tony Chavez officiating. Crescenciano R. Medina, 79, longtime resident of Albuquerque died, Tuesday, June 20, 2000. He is survived by his wife and lifelong friend, Merlinda Medina of Albuquerque; children, Tim Medina and wife, Alice of Los Lunas, NM, Stella Mendez and husband, Nestor of Albuquerque, Mary Price and husband, Thomas of Alpine, CA, Georgia Schreiner and husband, Anthony of Albuquerque and Raymond Medina and wife, Lorraine of Albuquerque; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and brother, Alfonso Medina and wife, Clara of Bernalillo, NM. Lucille Murdock, 80, of West Thomas Street, Carlsbad, NM, passed away Tuesday, June 20, 2000 at her home. She will lie in state Thursday, June 22, 2000, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, at Denton-Funchess Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Thursday, June 22, 2000, 2:00 p.m., at Sunset Church of Christ, Carlsbad, with Mal Shakra officiating. Graveside services will be Friday, June 23, 2000, 3:00 p.m., at Sunset Memorial Park, Albuquerque, with Mark McKenzie of Riverside Church of Christ officiating. Lucille Murdock was born Monday, March 1, 1920 to Preston Eugene King and Leona Gertrude Ashford King in Electra, Texas. She grew up in west Texas, spending most of her formative years in Northfield, Texas. On June 16, 1935 she married Allen Woodson Murdock in Childress, Texas. In 1941 they moved to Carlsbad. They lived in the San Francisco Bay area until 1954 where Mr. Murdock worked in the shipyards. Then they moved to Albuquerque where he was a general contractor, and owned and operated Murdock Construction. While in Albuquerque she was very active at Riverside Church of Christ. After losing her husband she moved to Carlsbad in 1994 where she was active in Sunset Church of Christ. She worked at the soup kitchen and was an active volunteer at Lakeview Christian Home of the Southwest, Inc. Her husband preceded her in death in 1993. She is survived by three daughters, Durees A. Carriaga and husband, Orlando of Carlsbad, Jeannie Croutch and husband, George of Morgan Hill, CA, LaRheta Lewis-Murdock of Albuquerque; one sister, Gwen Graves of Farmington; nine grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. Antonio J. Pino, age 82, a longtime resident of Albuquerque, died June 18, 2000. He is survived by his wife, Alice Pino of Albuquerque; daughter, Mary Ann Baca and husband, Oz of Tome; sons, David Pino and wife, Barbara of Hobbs, B.P. (Bolie) Pino; sisters, Flora Padilla, Nica Chavez, Petrita Ciddio; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beautiful granddaughter, Candace Pino; two sisters; and one brother. Mr. Pino was a member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church. He was very active at Holy Ghost serving as an usher and helping with bingo. He retired from Sandia after 30 years of devoted service. He was also a member of American Legion Post 13 and Knights of Columbus Council 641. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, June 22, 2000, 10:00 a.m., at Holy Ghost Catholic Church with Father Tom Mayefske as Celebrant. Doll Randel, a resident of Albuquerque since 1953, died on June 17, 2000. She formerly worked for the NM Motor Vehicle Division and was active at Palo Duro Senior Center. Her husband, Lloyd Randel, preceded her in death in 1990. She is survived by three children, Beverly Randel Schlick, Leigh Louise Matthewson and Lloyd B. Randel, all of Albuquerque; seven grandchildren, Piper, Trina, Colleen, Gina, Eric, Randy and Kari; and seven great-grandchildren, Kyle, Nicholas, Ariana, Kassel, Tallie, Olympia, and Spencer. Viewing will be on Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., followed by services at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel of Sandia Funeral Care, with Pastor Rick Donaho of New Covenant Church officiating. Hildred C. Stotts, 90, a resident of Albuquerque, died Saturday, June 17, 2000. She is survived by her sister, Helen Stach of Elgin, TX; nephews, Roland Carlson, Jr. and wife, Sally of Victoria, TX and Charles Boettcher and wife, Beth of East Bernard, TX; niece, Tina Hollingsworth of Houston, TX; and friend, Bobbie Freid of Albuquerque. Mrs. Stotts had a daughter, Frances Ann who disappeared mysteriously in 1967. Graveside services will be held Thursday, 10:00 a.m., at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE. Guy L. (Bud) Swank, born September 30, 1926, returned home, June 20, 2000. Even thought time took it's toll, his voice never failed him and now joins the heavenly choir with his son, Gary; sisters, Zena and Mickey; mother, Anna; and brother, Vincel. While family and friends struggle with the silence, they bring a new voice to his life with memories of a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He was a WWII Army Veteran who loved fishing, hunting and square dancing. An avid reader, he had a quick wit, and a wealth of knowledge. He is survived by Mary, his wife of 49 years; daughter, Traci Sanchez and husband, Kraig of Albuquerque and his two grandchildren, Noah and Jenna Mari Sanchez; and many family members and friends. Dolores Torres, born December 3, 1950, and a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, passed away June 20, 2000. She is survived by her parents, Emilio and Gertrude Torres; sister, Nadine Torres; brothers, John Torres and wife, Anna of Taos and David Torres and wife, Johanna of Houston, TX; nephew, Vincent Torres; niece, Leaha Torres; many uncles, aunts, cousins and her special friend, Edith Maes. Ms. Torres was a UNM graduate where she majored in Journalism and Elementary Education. As a teacher she was very dedicated to her work and was loved by her students. FRANCES M. DAVIS, 83, of Raton died Sunday. She was living at the Sunbridge Care Center in Raton while awaiting the completion of her new home in Cimarron. She was born Oct. 2, 1916, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest J. Davis. She is survived by her daughters Freda McKinley, and Judy Hughes and husband David, all of Cimarron; grandchildren Mark Hamilton, Wayne McKinley, Lisa Osada and husband Bob, Eric McKinley, Lori Bryan and husband Justin, Shari Bryan and husband Danny, and Marlene Pitmann and husband Jerry; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services at 2 p.m. Saturday in Cimarron, location pending. Alderette-Pomeroy Funeral Home, Raton.

RICARDO MANZANAREZ, 83, of Espaņola died Wednesday at Hacienda de Salud Nursing Home in Espaņola. He was preceded in death by his parents Emericia and Anastacio Manzanarez; son, Donald Manzanarez; sisters Patricia Trujillo, and Senovia Trujillo; and brothers Liandro Manzanarez, Teodoro Manzanarez, and Celestino Manzanarez. He is survived by his wife, Emilia Manzanarez of Espaņola; stepson, Alfonzo Manzanarez of Espaņola; stepdaughter, Mary L. Martinez of Brighton, Colo.; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Friday at Lujan's Funeral Home in Espaņola. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at San Juan de Nepomuceno Catholic Church in El Rito. Burial will follow at the El Rito Catholic Cemetery. Lujan's Funeral Home, Espaņola.

PERFILIA T. MARTINEZ, 91, of Truchas died Monday at the Sombrillo Nursing Home in Los Alamos. She was preceded in death by her husband, Juan Domingo Martinez; granddaughter, Debbie Sandoval; great-grandson, Adraino Bermudez; half-sister, Florina Gallego; and son-in-law, John Mills. She is survived by her sons Dennis Martinez and wife Frances, Erenesto Martinez and wife Rosanne, and Juan Martinez, all of Truchas; daughters Sally Mills, and Mary Bermudez, both of Espaņola, and Benita Sandoval of Albuquerque; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. today at Lujan's Funeral Home in Espaņola. Funeral services at 10 a.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church in Truchas. VICTOR J. MARTINEZ, 70, of Albuquerque died Monday. He served in the U.S. Armed Forces during the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He is survived by his wife, Helen Martinez; sons Jerry Martinez, Thomas Martinez, Robert Martinez, Richard Martinez, and Aaron Martinez; and daughter, Laura Martinez. Cremation has taken place. Harold D. (Moe) Anamosa of Albuquerque died on June 18, 2001 at the age of 80 in Branson, MO. A Mass will be celebrated on Friday, June 22, 2001, 12:00 p.m. at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 12500 Carmel N.E. Robert C. Baddaker, 78, a resident of Albuquerque since 1948. Bob received his final order on Tuesday, June 19, 2001 and is on eternal patrol. He was born in Waukegan, IL on February 23, 1923. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Audrey Baddaker of Albuquerque; son, James R. Baddaker and wife, Donna of Grapevine, TX; daughter, Linda B. Plymale and husband, Allen; four grandchildren; one great-grandson; and sister, Laura Kee and Calvin Wade of Palermo, ME. Bob was a Submariner in WWII and after completing his education he worked 30 years for IRS. He was a member of the U.S. Submarine Veterans of WWII, U.S. Submarine Veterans, Inc and the D.A.V. Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be held Monday, 3:30 p.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, 1111 University Blvd. NE., with Rev. Dr. Terry E. Anderson officiating. Interment of cremains will take place Tuesday, 10:30 a.m., at Santa Fe National Cemetery. George E. Beers, 95, a resident of Port Orange, FL and a former resident of Albuquerque for 43 years, died Tuesday, June 19, 2001. He is survived by his son, Paul J. Beers of Alhambra, CA; daughters, Margaret Tarpey of Port Orange, FL and Rosemary Stephens of Placitas; brother, Richard Beers of Franklin, PA; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Mr. Beers was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Laura; and son, William E. Beers. He was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church. Mr. Beers was a retired machinist for 'ACF' and the Atomic Energy Commission. He enjoyed traveling with the Silver Streak Club. Mr. Beers also enjoyed hunting and fishing. John Michael Berlier born January 23, 1984 in Albuquerque died much too soon in an auto accident June 20, 2001. John is survived by his parents, Jim and Vicki Berlier; and sister, Jennifer. He is also survived by grandparents, Oscar and Wilma Berlier of Los Chavez & Encino, N.M., and Audra Lee Crossland of Fritch, TX; aunts and uncles, Eileen and Ken Goode, Shannon & Joe McCaleb, Alan and Linda Crossland and Richard and Debbie Crossland; cousins, Sheila and Dominic Aragon, Bret Crossland, Tobie Crossland and Allyson Crossland; along with numerous other family members and friends. John loved the Lord and had a special zest for life. He also had an exceptional sense of humor and with that love and humor he ministered to those around, touching the lives of people across the nation. John was a member of the class of 2002 at Estancia High School. He loved being with family and friends. John especially enjoyed basketball, music, hunting, fishing, motorcycles, the youth group at Immanuel Baptist Church, the LOGOS youth group, FFA activities and showing animals at the fair. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 23, 2001 at the Estancia High School gymnasium. Albert Hagan of Immanuel Baptist Church will conduct the services. Burial will follow at the Estancia Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Wayne Connell, Ken Goode, Joe McCaleb, Andy Otis, Victor Powell and Breck Walden. Honorary Pallbearers are Nick Mahaffey, Kyle Autry, Cole Gardner, Kris Kelley, Randall Bates, Matthew & Colvin Connell, Joey Autry, Brady & Stevie Ness, David Walden, Ben Wilson, Gene Moya and Andy Otis. Donations can be made to the Estancia FFA Chapter, or the Immanuel Baptist Church Youth Group in Estancia. Arrangements by Direct Funeral Services, 2919 4th ST. NW. Albuquerque. 505-343-8008.

Harold D. Bynum, 79, a resident of Albuquerque for 54 years, died Wednesday, June 20, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Jane M. Bynum of Albuquerque; son, John H. Bynum and wife, Glenna; daughter, Wanda Sue Anderson and husband, Larry, all of Anza, CA; six grandchildren; brother, Bill Bynum of Las Cruces; and four stepchildren. Mr. Bynum served in the U.S. Army during WWII as a medic and air evacuation of injured military personnel in the South Pacific. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post 401 and the American Legion. Mr. Bynum was employed with the Navajo Freight Lines from 1954 until 1978. He served as the secretary and treasurer of Teamsters Local 492 from 1979 to 1981. Services will be held Saturday, 9:30 a.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, 1111 University Blvd. NE, with Alan Taylor officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Roy Tramell, Dave Clark, Red Sanders, John Holland, L.D. Barnett, James Carter, Maxim Adoberovaski and Cleavon Perry. Honorary Pallbearers will be Wally Huston, Grady Young, Roy Jenkins, T.J. Robertson and Robert March. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to American Heart Association NM Affiliate, 6301 Forest Hills Dr. NE, 87110. French Mortuary, 1111 University Blvd. NE.
