William C. Merritt, 82, a resident of Truth or Consequences for 30 years, died Wednesday, June 19, 2002. He was born on October 26, 1919 in Torrance County to Thomas and Rose Merritt. Mr. Merritt was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving his country during WWII. He was stationed in Hawaii and worked as an airplane mechanic to repair downed planes in the many islands of the Pacific. After the war, he owned and operated a Dairy Farm in the Estancia Valley. He was preceded in death by his mother and father; brothers, Lee and Robert; and a sister, Tommy Jeanne Vaughn. He is survived by his sisters, Opal Garland, Lucy Clark, Lynette Cox and Ina Mitchell; brother, George Merritt; and many nieces and nephews. Services will be held Saturday, June 22, 2002, at 2:00 p.m., at the First Baptist Church in Estancia. Interment will take place Monday, June 24, 2002, at 10:30 a.m., at Santa Fe National Cemetery. Major Clarence Andrew Ondes, U.S.A.F. (Ret.), 80, a resident of Corrales for 33 years, passed away on Wednesday, June 19, 2002. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Helen Johns Ondes of the family home in Corrales; son, Andrew J. Ondes and wife, Karen of Flint, MI; daughter, Victoria D. Aran and husband, Kanda of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Sean A. Ondes of Corrales, Devaraj Aran, Vani Aran, Tara Aran and Chandi Aran, all of Albuquerque; step-granddaughter, Anna Martin of Flint, MI; and step-grandson, Michael Martin of Rochester, NY; three brothers, Charles J. Ondes of Springfield, IL, Melvin J. Ondes of Livingston, IL and William F. Ondes of Glen Carbon, IL; sister, Joyce J. Ficker of Staunton, IL; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Julia Turzak Ondes. Major Ondes was born in Livingston, IL on December 30, 1921. He served in WWII and the Korean War. Major Ondes was an Aircraft Commander and had piloted the B-17, B-24, B-25, B-29, B- 33 and the B-47 aircraft. At the time of his retirement in 1965, he was assigned to The Minuteman Missile program at Vandenburg AFB in California. He loved flying, and after his retirement he flew his own aircraft, a Moony Ranger, for 19 years. He was active in the Republican Party. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be held Monday, 7:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, 1111 University Blvd. NE. Interment of cremains will be on Tuesday, at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. Charles H. "Chuck" Stowers, 68, of Dade City, FL died June 19, 2002 in Florida. He owned and operated Pioneer Janitor Supply, Inc. for over 15 years in Albuquerque. He is survived by three sons, Chuck Jr. of Dallas, Randall C. and Barry S. both of San Antonio, TX; six grandchildren; three half-brothers; one half-sister. Marvin H. Taichert, age 69, a lifetime resident of Las Vegas, NM passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, June 20, 2002. He was born in Las Vegas, NM on June 2, 1933 to the late Milton Taichert and Frances Estrach Taichert. He was a 1955 graduate of Harvard University with highest honors. He was a self-employed businessman and former owner of Taichert's Clothing Store on Douglas Avenue, retiring in 1990. He was founder and also served as President of the Montefiore Cemetery Association. He devoted himself to the Cemetery and organizing clean-up and other activities at the cemetery. He was a great gardener and cook. He was a very generous donor to the Harvard University, University of New Mexico and New Mexico Highlands University and to several other charities. He was a member of the Beit Tikba Synagogue. He is preceded in death by parents, Milton Taichert in 1989 and Frances Taichert in 1978. He is survived by cousins, Robert Taichert and wife, Zane of Albuquerque, Louise Taichert Feldman M.D. and husband, Sanford Feldman M.D. of Mill Valley CA, Marion Goodman and husband, Sam of Encino, CA, John Feldman and wife, Carol of Albuquerque and Hal Abrams and wife, Judy of Alabama. The family wishes to express special gratitude to Mayra Lucero, special friend and caregiver for the 15 years; his nurse and friend, Anna R. Solano; caregivers, Jessie Encinias, Josephine Lujan, Joyce LeDoux, Beatrice LeDoux, Estella Garcia, Linda Morales and Renee Aguilar. PETER 'PETE' ESQUIBEL, 25, of Las Vegas, N.M., died Thursday after injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. He was born in Las Vegas, N.M., Dec. 19, 1976, to Robert M. Esquibel and Marie Rebecca Aragon Esquibel. He was employed by the Ilfeld's Furniture Store as a delivery driver. A lifelong Catholic, he was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, William Aragon; paternal grandfather, Mariano Esquibel; and daughter, Faith Esquibel. He is survived by his parents, Robert and Becky Esquibel of the family home in Las Vegas, N.M.; sisters, Nichole Esquibel and Christina Esquibel both of Las Vegas, N.M.; maternal grandmother, Mary Aragon and paternal grandmother, Marcelina Esquibel both of Las Vegas, N.M.; and many other relatives and friends. Rosary devotional services will be at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Immaculate Conception Church. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the same church. Burial will follow at the Mt. MAGDALENE M. GALVEZ, 16, of Ojo Caliente, died Thursday following injuries sustained in an automobile accident. She was a student at Mesa Vista High School where she was a member of the M.E.S.A. Organization and the Honor Society and was very proud to be manager of the boys basketball team. She was preceded in death by her aunt, Yolanda Galvez, and cousin, Jonathan Galvez. She is survived by her mother, Bernadette Galvez; sister, Mariah Galvez; grandparents, Donald and Tessie Galvez, all of Ojo Caliente; and many other relatives and friends. LOIS STRANGE of Santa Fe died Wednesday. She was born in Kansas, then moved to Las Vegas, N.M., before settling in Santa Fe, where she was employed at El Nido restaurant in Tesuque for over 30 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and Eva Mary Kirkendall, and sister, Cecil Anderson. She is survived by one niece, Mary Ellen Turgal from Paso Robles, Calif.; daughter, Janic; and many close and personal friends. ISABEL G. VALDEZ, 95, of Santa Fe, died Thursday at St. Vincent Hospital. She was born July 4, 1906, in Pinos Wells to Vincente and Gregorita Garcia. She married Tomas A. Valdez in January 1942. Her parents and husband, Tomas, preceded her in death. She was a lifelong member of Guadalupe Parish, Third Order of St. Francis and Union Protectiva. She is survived by two sons, Thomas R. Valdez and wife, Angela, and Timoteo Valdez; daughter, Agnes Trujillo; sister, Annie Montoya; 21 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren. Rosaries will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Berardinelli Chapel and 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Our Lady of Guadualupe. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of Guadalupe. MABEL M. VARELA, 76, of Pecos died Thursday. She was born July 1, 1925, in Cimarron. She married Sabino R. Varela on Dec. 26, 1942. She was employed as a municipal judge in Pecos for more than 20 years, was past president of the school board for six years, past president of the local clinic in Pecos for 20 years and past president for the board of housing for 22 years. She was involved with the Catholic Daughters Court 2332 of San Antionio de Pecos, was very involved with the community and a mother figure for many of her children. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Carol; four sisters and one brother. She is survived by her husband, Sabino R. Varela; sons, Phillip and wife, Lorraine, Dan and wife, Irene, Melvin and wife, Elaine, Wayne and wife, Kathy, Steve and wife, Maria, Gary and wife, Pauline, and George and wife, Theresa; sisters, Thelma Lujan, Carmen Gonzales and Dorothy Bustamente; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces. Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. Sunday, and a rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Pecos. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Anthony in Pecos. Frances Irene Agnes, 70, a resident of Albuquerque for 61 years, passed away June 19, 2003. She is survived by her children, Cheryl Russey and husband, Joe of Albuquerque, Eugene G. Agnes II and wife, Mary of Mesa, AZ and Jayne Agnes of Albuquerque; six grandchildren, Kammara Russey, Francesca Agnes, Alexandra Agnes, Kaylah Russey and Maryssa Agnes; her mother, Beulah Greer; seven sisters; three brothers; and many other relatives and friends. Joe M. Arellin, 74, passed away on June 20, 2003 peacefully at his home with his family and friends at his side. He was a long time resident of Belen, businessman, cattle rancher, and member of the international Union of Operating Engineers local 953. He is preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Ester Arellin, brother Roman and three sisters; Omessima, Jesus, and Epiphania. He is survived by six children; Danny of Belen, Freddie and his wife of Peralta, Linda of Belen, Robert of Albuquerque, Deborah and husband Don Narboe of Belen, Charlene and husband Larry Mccause of El Cerro. He is also survived by four grandsons; Christopher Baca, Emanuel Arellin and his wife Tina, Stephen and Ryan Narboe, and one great grandson, Matthew Arellin. Charles Robert Barncord, 83, a resident of Albuquerque for over 40 years, passed away May 22, 2003 after a valiant struggle with cancer. Marguerite Barncord, his loving wife of 57 years, passed away February 2, 1999. He is survived by his son, Gary Barncord and wife, Dolores of Minden, NE; his daughter, Linda Barncord and husband, Frank Geick of Emerald Hills, CA; his granddaughters, Kenneta Kraemer of Aurora, CO, and Inde Barncord Wissing and husband, Chris of Kearney, NE; his great-granddaughter, Lacy Kraemer of Aurora, CO; and sister, Norma Owen and husband, Jack of Sun Lakes, AZ. Charles "Bob" married Marguerite October 1941 in Whitewater, KS. After the outbreak of WWII, Bob entered the Army and studied engineering at Ohio State University. In 1944, they moved to Los Alamos when Bob was selected to work on the Manhattan Project and where Marguerite served as a registered nurse. After the war concluded, Bob completed his ME degree in May 1949 at the University of New Mexico, while continuing to work for University of CA on Sandia Base. In November 1949, he joined Sandia National Laboratory where he worked in Albuquerque, NM and Livermore, CA until his retirement as Controller, in May 1982. Bob and Marguerite traveled extensively after his retirement and were active members of the Monte Vista Christian Church. Cremation has taken place and Bob was laid to rest with his beloved wife, Marguerite at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe, NM. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, June 28, 2003, 1:30 p.m. at the Monte Vista Christian Church, 3501 Campus Blvd. NE, with Reverends Fred Dorisse and Michelle Tatlock officiating. Edith DeWitt Miller, 93, a long-time resident of Albuquerque, died peacefully on Thursday, June 19, 2003. She was born on July 4, 1909. She was married in 1931 to Maxwell B. Miller who preceded her in death. She is survived by her daughter, Evelyn Miller Harris of Redondo Beach, CA, and by her son, Donald DeWitt Miller and wife, Valerie of Hendersonville, North Carolina; five grandchildren, Kathleen Harris Luttrull, of Redondo Beach, CA and husband, Carolyn Harris Le-Fort of Creston, CA, and husband, Bradford Harris of Harbor City, CA and wife, Janelle Miller Johnson of Albuquerque, and husband, Phil, and Jay Alan Miller of Rome, Italy; five great-grandchildren, Jennice Johnson and Jay Kory Johnson, of Albuquerque, Brian Luttrull of Redondo Beach, CA, Cameron Aichinger and Madeleine Le-Fort of Creston, CA. She is also survived by nieces and nephews. Edith graduated from Albuquerque High School and the University of New Mexico, where she was a music major. She also attended the College of Emporia in Kansas. Edith joined the First Presbyterian Church in 1925 and was a devoted and active member. She was the organist there for several years. She was also a Deacon, a member of the Mariners club, the Hand Bell Choir, the Women's Association, Help-Line, and a faithful donor of her hand crocheted afghans to the Sunbonnet Gift Shop. Edith belonged to Eastern Star, and Sigma Alpha Iota music fraternity. She worked at Sandia Labs as an editor. During retirement, Edith continued with her music, playing organ and piano for her retirement home. A funeral service will be held at First Presbyterian Church 215 Locust NE, Monday, June 23, 2003 at 3:00 p.m. with Dr. Paul Depenport officiating. Internment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. Donna L. Chavez, 43, a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, died Friday, June 20, 2003. She is survived by her parents, Preciliano and Celina Chavez of Albuquerque; sisters, Lucy Vasquez and husband, Dan of Albuquerque, Rosemary Cordova and husband, Mike of Lake Mary, FL and Frances Ann Gonzales of Aurora, CO; nieces, Michelle Vasquez of Albuquerque, Danielle Gonzales and Antoinette Gonzales, both of Aurora, CO; nephews, Christopher Vasquez of Albuquerque, Eric Cordova and Jason Cordova, both of Lake Mary, FL; and many, many friends. Donna was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church and Church of the Risen Savior. She was a volunteer for Carrie Tingley Hospital, worked for New Vistas Independent Living Center and was a member of the Spina Bifida Association of New Mexico Inc. Donna fought a courageous battle with a lifelong illness. It takes many stars to light the sky and Donna now you are now one of them. Juanita S. Chavez, age 102, a lifelong resident of New Mexico died June 19, 2003. Survivors include her daughters, Josephine Chavez of Carrizozo, Teresa Chavez of Albuquerque, Agnes Dotson and husband, Keith of Corrales; sons, Mariano S. Chavez and wife, Lucy of Santa Fe, Godfrey S. Chavez of Tularosa, Richard S. Chavez and wife Charlotte of Chula Vista, CA, Frank S. Chavez and wife, Lorrane of Albuquerque, Conrad S. Chavez and wife, Sue of Checotha, OK; daughter-in-law, Mary Chavez of Carrizozo; 29 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Federico in 1969 and her son, Fred in 1972. Juanita was the Democratic Precinct Chairperson in Lincoln County for many years. Edith Louise "Edie" Johnson, a resident of Albuquerque since March 15, 1945, died on June 17, 2003. She is survived by Otis (Butch) Johnson, her husband since October 17, 1942. "Edie" was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church since 1956, was active in "Hoe Downers" landscaping, volunteered as an office assistant and helped with mailings, and was originator of "SMILES" (Seniors Meeting In Luncheon Entertainment Socials) started in 1993. She worked as a secretary at Albuquerque Country Club for 20 years and with UNM for 15 years. She also worked parttime at May's Music selling Hammond Chord Organs. "Edie" loved to travel and take pictures. She and her husband, Otis, gave travel lectures and slide shows for over 30 years. Cremation has taken place. Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, June 28, 2003 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1100 Indian School Road NE, with Reverend Patricia Holman officiating. Claudine Connie Koethe, 73, and a resident of Albuquerque since moving from Casper, Wyoming in 1974, died on June 15, 2003 in Albuquerque. She was a member of the Lutheran Church and Ladies Auxiliary of VFW. Her hobbies included arts and crafts, playing the piano, surfing the web and traveling in the US and Mexico. She also enjoyed stained glass creations, considered herself "a rock hound", was a published poet and a dancer. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother who will be greatly missed by her family. Her husband, Eugene Koethe, preceded her in death in 1984. She is survived by sons, Joseph Wickam of China, Jack Wickam of Durango, CO and Dean Wickam, of Albuquerque, NM; daughters, Kara Lyn Hubert of Albuquerque, NM, Judee Sullivan of Denver, CO and Sally Ranson of Bakersfield, CA; sister, Georgie Maltboy of Yardley, PA; nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Carl H. Krueger, 89, formerly of Quincy, IL and a resident of Albuquerque since 1955, died Thursday, June 19, 2003. He is survived by his son, Ron Krueger and wife, Bari of Albuquerque; daughter, Judy Burkhardt and husband, Ron of Frisco, TX; grandsons, Ronnie Krueger and wife, Rena of Colorado, Steven Krueger and wife, Holly of Texas, Jeff Krueger and wife, Trish, Robert Krueger and wife, Leslie, Jimmy Krueger and wife, Elaine, all of Albuquerque, Jon Burkhardt and wife, Krista and Chad Burkhardt and wife, Erika, all of Texas; and 14 great-grandchildren. Edna Hull Lively, native of Albuquerque, born December 5, 1902, passed away Friday, June 20, 2003. She is survived by her sister, Elsie Banes; nephews, Thomas Banes and Richard Banes; nieces, Nancy Banes Calahan, Betty Reed and Norine Shaul; and numerous grandnieces and nephews. Edna married William Lively, owner of Lively Equipment Company, May 14, 1934 and they remained married for 33 years until his death in 1967. Edna graduated from Albuquerque High School and after graduation worked as a secretary for the president of Anderman Balcomb and Glasbrook Insurance Company. After her retirement, Edna became very involved with the Santa Fe School for the Deaf and was a member of the Board of Regents. She learned sign language as a result of her involvement with hearing impaired and developed a version of sign language that made communication easier. It was published in 1966 and used in schools all over the United States. Private services will be held Tuesday, June 24, 2003.

Gregorio Maestas, beloved father, husband, and friend, passed into the arms of our Lord, June 18, 2003, surrounded by all of his loving family and friends. Greg was preceded in death by his wife Senaida Maestas, son Felix Maestas, daughter Gloria, and grandchildren David, Allen, and Evelyn. He is survived by his eleven children, sons Raymond Maestas and wife Analee, Greg Maestas and wife Karen, daughter Elizabeth Maestas, son Edward Maestas and wife Margie, daughter Sandra Maestas, son Steven Maestas and wife Diana, daughters Barbara Molina and husband David, Angie Pritchett and husband Greg, sons Anthony Maestas, Wilfred Maestas and Carmen, Dennis Maestas and wife Mary; two brothers; three sisters; 31 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; numerous other family members and friends in the Valley and Los Lunas, who loved him deeply and will miss him. Services will be held at St. Anne Catholic Church, 1400 Arenal Rd. SW. A rosary will be recited at 9:00am on Friday, June 21, 2003, followed by a communion service at 10:00am. Immediately following the communion service, the family will gather at the home of Ray and Analee Maestas. Greg will be interred at Mt. Calvary Cemetery on Monday, June 23, 2003 at 11:00am. Immediately following the interment the family will gather at the home of Ray and Analee Maestas. Dad, you will be greatly missed by all of us. We love you dad. Mario Jose 20, passed away June 19, 2003. He was employed by Big M Pluming. He is survived by his Mother Sofia Padilla, father Ben Marquez, brother Ben Marquez, grandparents; Joe and Margaret Marquez, Jose and Mary Padilla, girlfriend Cherie Nanco, many aunt, uncles, cousins and friends who loved and will miss him. Services will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church. Rosary will be recited Sunday, June 22, 2003 at 4:30pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, June 23, 2003 10:00am with burial to follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery Pallbearers will be; Joe Marquez, Gary Marquez, Manuel Padilla, Jude Padilla, Phil Garcia, and Carlos Torres. Honorary Pallbearers will be Daniel Padilla, Thomas Padilla and Eddie B.
