Frank Atencio, 76, born on October 4, 1922, passed away January 19, 1999 at a local hospital. He was a resident of Bernalillo, NM for 31 years. He is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Josephine Atencio; his two daughters, Marcella Lopez and husband, Bob of Sandia Park, NM and Hazel Herrera and husband, Bruno of Cuba, NM; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and Lillie Gallegos of Cuba, NM, whom he loved as a daughter. He is also survived by his three sisters, Martha Gutierrez of Albuquerque, Cecilia Aragon and husband, Robert of Durango, CO and Erlinda Montoya and husband, Daniel of Cuba, NM; and his aunt, Louisa Salazar of Albuquerque. He was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Bernalillo. He was a disabled veteran of World War II, a member of the DAV West Mesa Chapter V in Rio Rancho, and Knights of Columbus, Chapter 7633 in Bernalillo. He was a caring and hard working man who would have given the shirt of his back to anyone in need. A Rosary will be recited this evening, 7:00 p.m., at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Bernalillo. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, January 22, 1999, 11:00 a.m., at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church. Interment to follow at Vista Verde Memorial Park in Rio Rancho. Pallbearers will be Leandro Padilla, David Serbin, Eustaquio Salas, Jay Houston, Fred White and Felimon DeHerrera. Services entrusted to Alameda Mortuary, Gary F. Santillanes, CFSP.

Lorraine Boroughs, 76, a resident of Albuquerque since 1953, died Monday, January 18, 1999. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, James Boroughs of Albuquerque; daughter, Ethel Allene Venn and husband, Oliver of Albuquerque; son, James Oliver Boroughs and wife, Lynne of Sacramento, CA; brothers, Raymond Clifford of McIntosh, NM, Jimmy Dale Clifford and wife, Maxine and Robert Eugene Clifford and wife, Ellen, all of Molalla, OR and Merle D. Clifford of Regina, NM; sisters, Helen Hedgecoke and husband, John of Camden, MI and Glenelle Williams and husband, Kenneth of Albuquerque; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be held Thursday, 1:00 p.m., at Alameda Bible Church, 220 El Pueblo NW, with Rev. Malcolm Bicker officiating. Jimmy Joe Brooks of Tacoma, Washington, died in Albuquerque on January 19, 1999. Private services have been arranged by Sandia Funeral Care, 7601 Wyoming Blvd. NE.

Ivan Randy Crandall, 67, SMG US Army Ret., son of Clair and Nora Crandall, went to join his Heavenly Father on the 20th of January, 1999. He was born February 8, 1931 at home in Bitely, MI. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Ethelyn Wright, Irene Booher, Ruth Cowley; and his devoted wife of 33 years, Shirley Ann Crandall; and his son, Mitchell Ray Crandall. He is survived by his four sisters, Mary Ellen Clarkson, Gladys Tinkam, Eleanor Rose, all of Michigan, Arvilla Kuck of Phoenix, AZ. He is survived by his three daughters, Geraldine Ann Crandall of Phoenix and her partner, Steve Lucero, Lynn Ann Pincumbe and son-in-law, William Pincumbe of Albuquerque, and Iva Rae Crandall and son-in-law, James Crandall of New Jersey. He was a wonderful grandfather of Dana Rae Lopez, Danny Lopez Jr., Janna Chenault, Michelle Pincumbe, Jimmy Crandall, Kevin Crandall and John Crandall. He was also a wonderful great-grandfather of Brittany Lopez and Gabriel Chavez. He served his country with honor during the Berlin crisis, Korean war and two tours in Vietnam. Ivan retired in 1972 from Sandia Army Base in Albuquerque. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the NRA, Chapter of MENSA, Mensia, and was active in the 3rd squadron of the 4th Cavalry Chapter and the 25th Infantry Division Association reunions. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal, United Nation's Service Medal, Nat'l Defense Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Vietnam Service Medal, Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, RVNCM. Special thanks to the Lovelace Oncology staff, Dr. Binder, Tarnowner and Weiler, Chemo nurses, and fourth floor south nursing staff. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Vietnam Veteran's Association. A funeral service will be held at the Gate of Heaven Mausoleum at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, January 22, with Rev. Jimmy Ray Ellis, 38, a life long resident of Albuquerque passed away at his home on Monday, January 18, 1999. He is survived by his mother, Ruby Harminson of Albuquerque; brother, Tommy Ellis and wife, Kate; sister, Tammy Scott and husband, Danny; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews, nieces and friends. He was preceded in death by his 12 year old friend companion, Rosie "His Dog" . Jimmy was an avid sports fan. He enjoyed professional wrestling and was a #1 fan of the Dallas Cowboys. Jim had a deep love for animals. Cremation has taken place. Graveside services will be held, Friday, 3:30 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE.

Ramon Estrada, 92, a lifelong resident of Bernalillo, New Mexico, died Monday, January 18, 1999. He is survived by his daughters, Laura Dominguez of Bernalillo, Angie Lopez and husband, Oscar of California, Martha "Carrie" Lucero and husband, Frank Jose of Bernalillo, and Mary Louise Guajardo and husband, Paul of Texas; sons, Daniel Estrada of Bernalillo, and Rudy Estrada and wife, Karen of Wisconsin; sister, Manuelita Duran and husband, Frank of Albuquerque; and many loving grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren. Mr. Estrada was preceded in death by his son, Felix Estrada in 1978. Rosary will be recited Friday, 7:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, Bernalillo. Mass will be celebrated Saturday, 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, Bernalillo, with Father Virgil Furfaro, Celebrant. Interment will be at Our Lady of Sorrows Cemetery. Alice G. Fallis, 80, beloved mother and grandmother, was called home to be with the Lord Tuesday, January 19, 1999. Mrs. Fallis was born on March 9, 1918 in Alameda, NM, was a resident of Albuquerque, formerly of Bernalillo. She is survived by her children, Margaret Carey and husband, Mark of Newark, CA, and Daniel Fallis of Costa Mesa, CA; three grandsons, Noel Salazar, Rollin Salazar and Glenn Fallis; one granddaughter, Deborah Morales; three great-grandsons, Jonah Salazar, David Fallis and Daniel Morales; two great-granddaughters, Jessica Morales and Ashley Morales. She will be greatly missed by her loving family. Visitations will be held Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Garcia Mortuary, on the corner of 8th Street and Stover. Gilbert C. Gawin, 81, a resident of Albuquerque since 1979, a native of Chicago, IL, died Saturday, January 9, 1999. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Gladys Gawin of the family home; son, Gilbert J. Gawin of Albuquerque; daughter, Gail E. Harris of Rio Rancho; grandchildren, Jennifer Harris of Dallas, TX and John Harris of Boulder, CO; brother, Arthur Gawin; and sister, Alvina Vana and husband, Charles, all of Crystal Lake, IL. Mrs. Rose De Gold, 92, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away on January 16, 1999. Mrs. Gold was the beloved mother of two daughters, Isabel Gold and Betty L. (Barreras) Gold; 14 grandchildren, Norma, Annette, Salina, Richard, Steve, Marty, Elaine, Mark, Lisa, Michael, Mayling, Anita, Mona and Mario; and 20 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Guadalupe (Pete) Gold; a daughter, Irene Rose (Garcia) Gold and granddaughter, Julia Gold. Mrs. Gold was a member of the Catholic Church, Fred Harvey Girl, and a past member of the Albuquerque Womens Club. Norma O. Grady, 86, a resident of Albuquerque since 1947, died Monday, January 18, 1999. She is survived by her sons, Jimmie J. Grady and wife, Estelle of Anchorage, AK, and Norman Patrick Grady of Albuquerque; grandson, Michael Jeffery Grady of Anchorage, AK; sister, Mary Crabb of Pasadena, TX; and nieces, Norma Marie Reece and Eddie Ann Crabb. Services will be held Friday, 2:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, 1111 University Blvd. NE. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul NE.

Josephine (Jay) Guyker, 81, a 26 year Albuquerque resident, died Monday, January 18, 1999. She is now with her precious Jesus. Mrs. Guyker is survived by her sons, William Guyker and wife, Alice of Greensburg, PA. John Guyker of Riverdale, MD, Fred Guyker and wife, Trudy of Los Alamos, NM, James Guyker and wife, Ruth of Buffalo, NY, Charles Guyker and wife, Maria of Gaithersburg, MD, Robert Guyker and wife, Faith of Maple Shade, NJ; daughters, Nancy Fafalios and husband, Joseph of Belle Vernon, PA and Lynette Guyker of Albuquerque, 17 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Guyker, brother Oswaldo Benedetti and sister, Anne D'Annunzio. Mrs. Guyker was a long time member of the Episcopal Church. She was currently associated with St. Mary's Episcopal Church where she was active with The Daughters of the King. She was dearly loved by her family and friends and will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her. James Everett King Sr., SMSGT USAF Retired, 70, a resident of Albuquerque since 1973, died Friday, January 15, 1999. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Annelle King of the family home; son, James E. King Jr. and wife, Kate of Dunstable, MA and John King and wife, Dawn of Albuquerque; daughter, Laura King of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Jessica Ann and Daniel James; sister, Virgie Taulbee of Middletown, OH; brother, Albert Hatton and wife, Donna of Maysville, KY; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and best friends, Jerry and Shirley Kolb of Colorado Springs, CO. Mr. King served 30 years in the United States Air Force, retiring as a Sr. Master Sergeant in 1974. He then taught automobile mechanics at T-VI for ten years. Mr. King served many years as a volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America, 14 years doing volunteer work with the Veterans' Administration in the escort service, and was a member of DAV 32. Mr. Luciano Lucero, 73, a resident of Albuquerque passed away on January 19, 1999. Mr. Lucero is survived by three daughters, Angela Sanchez, Pepita Ramirez and husband, Ray, and Ciria Caballero; three sons, David Lucero, Ernest Lucero and Leo Lucero; three sisters, Domie Martinez, Elvera Pena and husband, Albert, and Mary Lucero; one brother, Abe Lucero and wife, Fabiola; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Mr. Lucero was a member of the Catholic Church and a Veteran of the United States Navy, serving in World War II. A Rosary will be recited Friday morning at 11:00 at Holy Family Catholic Church, 562 Atrisco SW, with visitation at the Church after 10:30. Deacon Harry Beare reciting. Nicholas R. Montoya, 74, a lifelong resident of New Mexico, died on Tuesday, January 19, 1999. He is survived by his sons, Reginald N. Montoya and wife, Cheryl of Glen Burnie, MD and Randall R. Montoya of Albuquerque; daughters, Rhonda K. Garcia and husband, Perfecto of Los Lunas, NM, Renetta Sierra and husband, Anthony and Rebecca A. Montoya, all of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Jennifer A. Montoya, Rachel M. Montoya, Nicholas R. Montoya, Randi L. Garcia, Russell D. Garcia, Briana R. Sierra, and Sean A. Sierra; brother, Carlos Montoya and wife, Betty of San Diego, CA; sisters, Rose Lujan and husband, Al of Albuquerque, Olivia Kiefer and husband, Larry of Newport Beach, CA, Lovy Correra and husband, Gilbert, and Dolly Woody, all of Albuquerque and Vicky Baca of Las Cruces, NM; sister-in-law, Sally Montoya of Albuquerque; and numerous nieces and nephews. Arturo Guillermo Ortega, born June 25, 1920 in Las Vegas, NM, the son of Joaquin Ortega and Feloniz Chene de Ortega, died Wednesday, January 20, 1999 in Albuquerque at home with his family present. His grade school and high school education was in parochial schools in Las Vegas. Mr. Ortega attended Regis College in Denver, CO from 1939 until 1942. He served in the U.S. Army Force from April 1942 until September 1945 as a flying officer. He served in combat with the 8th Bomber Command in England, until he was shot down. He was a prisoner of war in Germany from September of 1943 until his escape in April of 1945. Mr. Ortega is survived by his wife, Eloisa E. Maes, who he married in Las Vegas, on June 6, 1945; seven children, Arturo G. Ortega Jr. of Albuquerque, Ricardo J. Ortega, married to Cecilia Garcia de Ortega of Albuquerque, Cristina Ortega Morris, married to Robert B. Morris of London, U.K., Carlos J. Ortega of Albuquerque, Daniel F. Ortega, married to Rebecca Chavez de Ortega of Madrid, Spain, Roberto D. Ortega, married to Loretta Cordova de Ortega of Albuquerque, and Armando M. Ortega, married to Yolanda Snowball of Los Angeles, CA. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren ranging from 18 months to 24 years, plus one on the way, David A. Ortega, Joaquin Ortega, Miguel Ortega, Javier Ortega, Margarita Ortega, Bremner Morris, Ana Morris, Sonia Morris, Leah Morris, Rosalinda Ortega, Maria Ortega, and Angelica Ortega. After his discharge from the U.S. Air Force, Mr. Ortega attended and graduated from the School of Foreign Service of Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., with a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service (summa cum laude, 1947); thereafter, Georgetown University Law Center, LL.B., 1950, J.D., April 21, 1967, nunc pro tunc, 1950. He was a member of the Board of Editors with the Georgetown University Law Journal. Mr. Ortega was a former member of the faculty of the Bullis School for Boys, Silver Spring, MD, 1947-1951; a former adjunct faculty member of the University of Albuquerque (then the College of St. Joseph), 1951-1952. Mr. Ortega had a private practice of law in Albuquerque from July, 1951 to July, 1991. Mr. Ortega was a member of the following professional organizations: Fellow, American College of Trial Lawyers (1969-present); Fellow, International Academy of Trial Lawyers (1979-present); Albuquerque Lawyers Club; Albuquerque Bar Association (President 1965-1966); State Bar of New Mexico (1951-present); New Mexico Bar Foundation; American Bar Association; New Mexico Trial Lawyers Association; Association of Trial Lawyers of America (State Committeeman 1961-1962); National Hispanic Bar Association. He was a member of the Boards of the following institutions, associations and organizations: Founder and President of Board of Directors of Hispanic Culture Foundation (June 1981-July 1991); Board of Directors of Public Service Company of New Mexico (1984-1992); Board of Directors of the University of New Mexico Foundation (1988-1991); Board of Directors of the North American Institute (1989-1991); Member of the Disciplinary Board, an Agency of the New Mexico Supreme Court Nominating Committee for the Appellate Courts of New Mexico (1989-1991). (1984-1990); President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities (1990-1992); Public Member, Liasion Committee on Medical Education of the American Medical Association and the Association of American Medical Colleges, 1974-1980 (Accrediting agency for medical schools in the United States and Canada); Southwestern Regional Council of the American Association for Higher Education; Board of Bar Examiners of the State of New Mexico; Albuquerque Fair Housing Board; The National Conference of Christmas and Jews; Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges, Washington, D.C. (formerly Vice-Chairman and member of the Executive Committee); New Mexico Humanities Council (1972-1978); Association of Southwestern Humanities Councils (Chairman 1979-1981). He was a Recipient of the following awards, honorary degrees and positions: Brotherhood Award of the National Conference of Christians and Jews; New Mexico Distinguished Public Service Award, 1971; Award of Distinction of the Alumni Association of the University of New Mexico, 1973; John Carroll Award of the Georgetown University Alumni Association, 1975; Rodey Award, Alumni Association of the University of New Mexico, 1989; Recognition Medal of the Regents of the University of New Mexico, 1990; University of New Mexico, Doctor of Laws, Honoris Causa, 1979; Universidad Argentina John F. Kennedy, Buenos Aires, Doctor Honoris Causa, 1979; Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., Doctor of Laws, Honoris Causa, 1980; State Bar of New Mexico, Annual Award for Professionalism, 1992; Honorary Vice-Consul of Spain in New Mexico, February 1984 through September 1986; Honorary Consul of Spain in New Mexico, September 1986 through May 1991. Mr. Bennie Quintana, 77, passed away on January 17, 1999. He was born on September 4, 1921 in Norton, N.M. and raised in Tucumcari, N.M. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nina Quintana; his parents, Eduardo Quintana and Josefita Marquez Esquibel; a brother, Cecilio and a special friend, Clara Gillia. He is survived by a sister, Avelina Romo from San Francisco; brothers, Florencio from Pueblo, CO., Manual from Santa Rosa and James from Albuquerque; children, George J. Marquez and wife, Tina from Grants, Dennis Marquez and wife, Genoveva from Las Vegas, N.M. and a daughter, Anna Marie Cantwell from Albuquerque; twelve grandchildren, Nina Kay Jones, George Marquez Jr., John N. Marquez, Benny A. Marquez, Theresa Feller, Leo Martinez, Dennis Martinez, Rose Martinez, Jeanne Aikin, Benny J. Marquez, Annamarie Andler and Consuelo Marquez; 18 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Bennie was a member of the Catholic Church, a Veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army and a member of the V.F.W. Post 1547. Bennie and his wife owned and operated several restaurants in Tucumcari and Clayton, N.M. He lived in San Diego, CA for over 30 years where he was an accomplished chef, working at Valencia Hotel in La Jolla, Coronado Hotel and Atlantis Restaurant at Sea World in California. He enjoyed horseraces in California and especially in New Mexico where his son, George is a racehorse owner. He returned to New Mexico in 1992, where he enjoyed being with his children. During the last four years he enjoyed the friendships and compadres of his friends at the North Valley Senior Citizens. A Rosary was recited Wednesday evening, 6:00 p.m., in the Gabaldon Memorial Chapel, with Fr. Larry Schriber, reciting. Visitation was after 5:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated this morning, 10:00 a.m., at The Gate of Heaven Chapel with visitation after 9:30 a.m. Monsignor Joaquin A. Bazan, Celebrant and Father Schriber will concelebrant. Interment will follow at the Santa Fe National Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. with Military Honors. Pallbearers will be Leo Martinez, Dennis Martinez, George J. Marquez Jr., John N. Marquez, Benny A. Marquez, Benny J. Marquez and Tony Romo. Gabaldon Mortuary, 1000 Old Coors Rd. SW, in charge of the arrangements.

Christopher Matthew Roybal, infant son of Ricky and Karen Roybal of Albuquerque, died Monday, January 18, 1999. He is also survived by his brother, Ricky Roybal; sister, Briana Roybal, both of Albuquerque; grandparents, Clyde and Sylvia Roybal of Pecos and David and Eleanor Rodriguez of Albuquerque; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Friends may visit French Mortuary, 1111 University Blvd. NE, Friday, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Candis S. Ryan, 16, a resident of Albuquerque, died Monday, January 18, 1999. She is survived by her (Daddy) and (Mom), Michael and Linda Ryan of the family home; grandparents, Barbara (Granny) Ryan, Jean (Nanny) and Ben (Gramps) Perea, and Mr. and Mrs. Bob Ryan; two great-grandmothers, Martha Ryan and Florence Martin; 12 uncles; 11 aunts; 32 cousins; as well as numerous great-aunts, great-uncles, and cousins, who all loved her dearly. Candis attended West Mesa High School where she was a member of the Swim Team and the Thespian Club. She also worked as a lifeguard at the West Mesa Aquatic Center. Candis touched the lives of everyone she met. From teachers, friends, and her students in swim classes, to strangers on the street, she had a smile for each and everyone. Her absence will leave a void in each one of our lives. Scripture services will be held Friday, 3:30 p.m., at Santuario De San Martin, 8321 Camino San Martin SW, with Father Daniel Farris officiating. Cremation will take place following the services. Dorothy R. Shriver passed away at her home on January 19, 1999. A longtime resident of Albuquerque, she is survived by her husband, Bruce; sister, Irma Yaney of Oklahoma City; sister-in-law, Jill and brother-in-law, Larry Patterson of Westfield, WS. She retired from USAF Civil Service. She was a member of Monterey Baptist Church, 12501 Lomas NE, where there will be a memorial service at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, January 22, 1999. Ethel Stzalkowski went to be with the Lord January 16, 1999. She is survived by a son, Lowell Hargrave and wife, Margaret of Albuquerque; and a daughter, Zelda Leneker and husband, Bill of Canjaharie, NY; one half sister, LaVerne Jones of Billings, Montana; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by two children, Arlene and Darrell; also her husband, Steve. Ethel was born March 12, 1900 in North Dakota but moved around a lot in her life and in her retirement settled in Bradeton, Florida. In 1991 came to Albuquerque to be with her son Lowell and wife. Cremation has taken place and to fulfill her wishes there will be no services.

Sverre E. (TJ) Tjora, 58, a resident of Albuquerque for 23 years, died Wednesday, January 20, 1999. He is survived by his wife, Janet Tjora of Albuquerque; parents, Enok and Karen Tjora of Sola, Norway; sister, Reidun Braun and husband, John of Chicago, IL; nieces, Tanya and Monika Braun; mother and father-in-law, Winnie and Lawrence Fitzner of Logan, NM; and numerous other family members. Mr. Tjora was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of American Legion Post #49. Mr. Tjora retired in 1998 from Sandia National Laboratories after 21 years. He will be deeply missed by family and friends. Cremation has taken place and private family services have been held. Mass of Christian Burial for Mrs. Jennie Trujillo will be celebrated Thursday, 10:00 a.m., at the Church of the Ascension, 150 Raymac Rd. SW, with final visitation at the church after 9:30 a.m. Father Anthony Bolman, Celebrant. Interment will follow at the Los Padillas Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Louie G. Trujillo, Gino Padilla, Gregory Saiz, Duane Trujillo, Beau Trujillo, Mario Baca and Jonathon Saiz. Honorary will be John Michael Silva, Phillip Silva, Robert Apodaca, Michael Diaz, Matthew Diaz, Joseph Diaz, Francisco Rodriquez, Christian Saiz, Martin Costello and Michael Kramer. Enie Swift Walton, 90, a resident of Albuquerque died January 19, 1999. She is survived by her son, Ray Jennings and wife, Barbara of Albuquerque; daughter, Charlotte Harrington of Texas; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and sister, Georgia Jobe and husband, Lloyd of Texas. Private entombment to take place. French Mortuary, 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE.

Tony Wicks, 58, passed away January 19, 1999. He retired from the U.S. Air Force. He is survived by sisters, Judy Lucero, Anna Marie Morgan, Precilla Fliex; uncle, Bennie Montoya; special cousin, Cathy Holguin; numerous family and friends who loved and will miss him. Services will be held at Holy Rosary Catholic Church with Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 21, Mass at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, with burial to follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery. Burial arrangements by Direct Services, 2919 4th NW, 343-8008.
