Stanley Skaza, age 73 and a native of West Rutland, VT died on May 6, 2002 in Albuquerque, NM. A Memorial Funeral Mass will be held at 9:00 a.m. Thursday, May 9, 2002 at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, 11401 Indian School Road NE.

Arthur P. Stanton, a resident of Socorro, NM died on Saturday, April 27, 2002. He was born in Albuquerque, NM on October 9, 1912 to Antonio Stanton and Mercedes Chavez of pioneer New Mexico families. He graduated from Albuquerque High School in 1932 and from the University of New Mexico in 1937 with a B.S. in mathematics. He served in the South Pacific (Mariana and Gilberts campaigns) until the end of WWII. In 1945, he married Jean Thompson. Following military service, he became the Albuquerque Assistant City Manager. In 1947, he joined New Mexico Tech as Registrar and Personnel Manager, instituting Tech's Honors Work-Study program in 1952. After retiring from Tech, he joined the University of New Mexico and developed the New Mexico State Student Loan Program. memberships include Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, the Albuquerque 20/30 Club, Socorro Presbyterian Church and Socorro Rotary Club. He served as president of the rotary club, was a Paul Harris Fellow and District Governor Representative. His hobbies included home improvement, golf and fishing. Art is preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Melba Bailey; and brothers, Benjamin and Walter. He is survived by his beloved wife, Jean; sister, Mercedes Garoffolo; daughter, Ann Stanton and husband, David Connor of Montpelier, VT; son, Thomas Stanton and wife, Mary of Polvadera, NM; four grandchildren, Christopher and Benjamin Stanton, Jesse Snipper and Nora Connor; and many beloved nieces and nephews. Memorial Services to celebrate his life will be held on Sunday, May 5, 2002 at 3:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Socorro with Rev. Phil Preston officiating. Private family interment will be at Sunset Memorial Park in Albuquerque. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the charity of one's choice. Lois B. Stewart, 80, of Muncie, IN passed away Tuesday morning at Ball Memorial Hospital. Born in Yorktown on August 26, 1921. She was the valedictorian of Yorktown High School, class of 1939 and attended Ball State University. Lois worked at Jim Stewart's Flower Shop for 39 years with her husband, Jim and later their daughter, Susan where she specialized in wedding flowers. She was a member of the Grace Episcopal Church in Muncie, the Muncie Elks, and a cheerful member of the Friends of Yesteryear. She is survived by one son, Daniel Stewart and his wife, Catharine of Yorktown, IN; and four daughters, Sharon Stewart of Yorktown, IN, Anne Stewart and husband, Joseph Pellegrion of Harrisonburg, VA, Janet Stewart and husband, Paul Kaplan of Albuquerque and Susan Stewart of Muncie, IN. She is also survived by one sister, Grace Miller and husband, Earl of Corona Del Mar, CA; her eight grandchildren, Jocelyn and Brian Waite, Erin and John Stewart, Ben and Jon Kaplan and Alexander and Hannah Pellegrion. Mrs. Stewart was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, James D. Stewart; her parents, John and Leona Pearl Funkhouser Bullock; and her sister, Helen Cowell. Funeral Services will be Friday, 11:00 a.m. at the Gant Funeral Home, Yorktown. Burial will follow in the Elm Ridge Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday, 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. and one hour prior to services on Friday.

Elizabeth Ann LaFrance Tobin, 47, a resident of Albuquerque for 14 years, passed away on Tuesday, May 7, 2002. She is survived by her husband, Michael S. Tobin; their son, Nathan A. Tobin; her parents, Joseph E. LaFrance and JoAnn LaFrance of Biloxi, MS; her brother, Jeffery K. LaFrance; sister, Brigitte M. Scriver, both of Ocean Springs, MS; her father-in-law, Harold Tobin; brother-in-law, Nelson Tobin, both of Tampa, FL; and brother-in-law, Jonathan Tobin of Detroit, Michigan. Elizabeth was born June 26, 1954 in Biloxi, Mississippi. She graduated from Ocean Springs High School in 1972 and graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1977. While attending USM, she met Michael and they married November 19, 1977. Upon graduation, she began a teaching career that spanned over 25 years. Her dedication to children and education was second to none. Services will be held Thursday, 2:30 p.m., at Congregation Albert, 3800 Louisiana NE, with Rabbi Joseph R. Black officiating. Irene (Jasperina) Van Den Kolk, 69, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family, Saturday May 4th 2002. She is survived by her loving husband and best friend of 55 years, Ronald Van Den Kolk; four children, Raina Mclean, Geri Blackmon and husband, Jimmy, Ann Dosch and husband, Joe and Frank Kolk and wife, Tracy; five beautiful grandchildren that loved her, AJ and Courtney McLean, Rachael, Megan, and Sarah Kolk. She was preceded in death by her son, Arthur Van Den Kolk. Our Mom loved making her dolls and her family and we will miss her. We love you Mom and Grandma. SARA TRUJILLO, 92, of Chama for the last 60 years died Monday at her home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis Trujillo; two daughters, Arlene and Cindy; and a son, Arthur. She is survived by four children, Pauline Norman of Los Angeles, William Trujillo of Dulce, Miriam Trujillo of Chama and Dennis Trujillo Jr. of Chama; grandchildren, Jacqui Chappel, Cassie Escalante, William Trujillo Jr., Joseph Trujillo, Isaac Trujillo, Bianca Trujillo and Olivia Trujillo; two great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick Parish Hall in Chama. Burial of her cremains will follow at the Chama Community Cemetery. Irene Anaya died Friday, May 2, 2003 in Albuquerque at the age of 46. She is survived by her mother, Lorenzita Anaya; sisters, Eva Sanchez and Mary Lou Chavez and husband, Leeroy of Los Padillas; brothers, Andy Anaya and wife, Nora Tachias of Bernalillo, and Ricky Anaya; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held on Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church where the Mass will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m. Burial will take place at Fairview Memorial Park. George S. Bennett, Jr., 83, a longtime resident of Albuquerque, died unexpectedly Wednesday, May 7, 2003. He is survived by his wife Polly Bennett; five children, Margaret Lewis, Barbara Ritchie, Mary Anderson, George S. Bennett III, and Donald Bennett; ten grandchildren; and one great-grandson. He is also survived by his brother, Charles Richard Bennett. He was an avid golfer and tennis player and a member of Tanoan Country Club and the Tennis Club of Albuquerque for many years. He was a member and lay reader at Sangre De Cristo Catholic Church. George was born on April 25, 1920 in Almirante, Panama. He graduated from Thatcher School and earned his Masters Degree in mechanical and electrical engineering from the US Naval Academy in 1941. He served in the elite Submarine Service where he received commendation from ComSubPac for outstanding ability and leadership. His combat decorations include the Silver Star Medal and Sec Navy commendation. After serving as commanding officer of the USS Sea Fox, he served as Planning Assistant for the US Atomic Energy Commission. He retired from the US Navy and moved to Albuquerque in 1962 where he was employed at Sandia National Laboratory until 1983. Services will be held on May 26, 2003 at 10:30 a.m. at Sangre De Cristo Catholic Church.

Alfred John Borowy, 66, Capt., USMC Ret., a resident of Corrales for the past 13 years, passed away on Tuesday, May 6, 2003. Alfred was born March 17, 1937 the son of Stanley and Antoinette Jarecki Borowy in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He had been an Aviation Supply Officer with the United States Marine Corps for 21 and a half years before retiring. He was a member of the American Legion in Corrales. He came to New Mexico from Tustin, California. Alfred was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Stanley Borowy. He is survived by his wife, Barbara of the family home; seven children, Toni Foster of Benicia, CA, Sharyn Blair of Joshua, TX, Linda Hood of Eden Prairie, MN, Joan Tatge of Bryan, TX, Robin Greenwood of Albuquerque, NM, David H. Lee of Goodyear, AZ, and Diane Sudlow of Albuquerque, NM; twelve grandchildren; two cousins, Joe Piotrowski and Angela Blash. A Graveside Service will be held on Friday, May 9, 2003 at 1:30 p.m. at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe with The Rev. Dr. Tim Marrow of the Taylor Ranch Baptist Church officiating. Jeromy Paul Fewell, 29, a resident of Los Lunas, passed away on May 6, 2003. He was born on February 13, 1974 in Grants, NM. Jeromy graduated from Emerson High School in Emerson, Arizona in 1992. He has worked as a pipe fitter for the past seven years, and was presently employed for Southwest Fire Protection as a Journeyman. His greatest Love was his son, Dustin. They rode their three-wheelers; Jeromy competed in motor cross races, and went camping together. Jeromy is survived by his son, Dustin of Los Lunas; his mother, Cindy Aragon of Los Lunas; father, Phil Fewell and his wife, Andrea, his brother, Kalli and his sister, Jessy all of Magnolia, Arkansas; maternal grandmother, Virginia Aragon of Okemah, Oklahoma; paternal grandfather, Paul Fewell and his wife, Cathy of Socorro, New Mexico, his very special longtime friends, David and Stephanie Dykes of Los Lunas; and many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, and many, many, friends. Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be held on Saturday May 10, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. at Riverside Funeral Home Chapel in Belen, New Mexico. Mrs. Margaret T. Fuentes, 65, a resident of Isleta Pueblo passed away on May 7, 2003. Mrs. Fuentes is the beloved mother to Daryl Reckaway and wife, Linda and Thomas Fuentes. Mrs. Fuentes is also survived by five sisters, Eulalia Jiron and husband, Alex, Abenita Johnson, Carmel Bangan, Edna Sami and husband, Kenneth and Mary Abeita; one brother, Tomas Abeita and wife, Dolores; three grandchildren, Cassandra, Adrian and Brandon; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Mrs. Fuentes was a member of the Catholic Church. A Visitation for Mrs Fuentes will be Friday evening from 6:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in the Gabaldon Memorial Chapel with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. by Father Hiliare. A final Visitation will be Saturday morning from 9:30 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Isleta with Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. by Father Hiliare. Ruth E. Gonzales, 86, lifetime resident of Albuquerque, died Saturday, May 3, 2003. She is survived by many friends, neighbors and former co-workers. Mrs. Gonzales was preceded in death by her husband, Charles E. Gonzales in 1972. She will be greatly missed, her zest for life was an inspiration to all who knew her. Mary Beth Kessler, Albuquerque native and resident of Dana Point, CA, succumbed to cancer on April 26, 2003. A well known tennis professional, Mary Beth is fondly remembered by many friends and students. A 1968 graduated of St. Pius X High School, Mary graduated from the University of New Mexico with a degree in Sociology in 1972. While at UNM Mary was ranked #1 on the University's Womens Tennis team. She was the Head Tennis Professional at Four Hills Country Club from 1972 - 1987 and was intermittently ranked in womens' singles and doubles during this time. In 1987, Mary Beth relocated to southern California where she coached and taught tennis to private students until her death. She also served as director of the annual Los Ninos Tennis Tournament which benefits children with special needs. Mary Beth loved teaching her students about tennis, but also about respect for others and becoming better human beings. She left the world a bit better and that alone is to have succeeded. Mary Beth is survived by her parents, Marcella and Chuck Kessler; sister and brother-in-law, Becky and Max Dominguez; sons, Max and Joseph; aunt and uncle, Marina and Warren Flood all of Albuquerque. She is also survived by Irwin and Dorothy Wagner and Ralph and Elaine Heiring; aunt, Leta Wagner of Dubuque, IA; aunts and uncles of Dubuque Iowa; and uncle, Jack Kessler of McMechen, West Virginia; aunt, Dolores Moore of St. Clarisville, OH. She is also survived by her dear friends, Dr. Jerry and Karen Stevens and their children, Ben, Chris and Susie; along with all her wonderful friends in California who helped Mary in her fight against cancer. Harlan Edward Lenander, Sr., 85, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Saturday, May 3, 2003. He was born in Minneapolis, KS, the second child of Edward William and Ida Warren Lenander on September 13, 1917. He graduated from Southwestern College, Winfield, KS in 1939 with a BS degree in Physics, Math and Chemistry. He attended Duke University for
graduate studies until he was called by the Secretary of the Navy to join a small group of scientists charged with developing a system to protect ships from magnetic mines during WWII, which was successful. Harlan met his wife in Washington, D.C. and they would have been married 60 years on May 7, 2003. They were transferred to the San Francisco, CA office where they remained until the end of the war. The next three years were spent at the Naval Ordnance Test Station in China Lake, CA, where rockets were being developed and tested. In 1949, he and his young family arrived in Albuquerque where he spent 29 years at Sandia National Laboratory. He worked in development and atomic testing spending much time at the South Pacific Eniwetok test site; Barking Sands, Kauai, HI; Tonapah, NV; and San Diego, CA for a special underwater test. He retired in 1978 as Director of Weapons Applications. Harlan received an honorary PhD from Southwestern College and was inducted into their Science Hall of Fame, April 13, 2003. He received many other honors for his volunteer service in Boy Scouts, Elks Cerebral Palsy Program, University Hospital volunteer in the laboratory, Sandia Lab Science Advisor Program, Optimists International and his church, Holy Cross Lutheran. Harlan was musically talented and had a perfect tenor voice. He sang in choirs for 70 years wherever he was, including on a navy ship. He played the piano, organ and cornet. He was a Boy Scout troop leader and had the only Boy Scout Band in New Mexico. He also served on the Kit Carson Executive board and in district offices. He received the Lamb award from the Lutheran Church for distinguished service to Boyhood and the Silver Beaver award, the highest award in scouting. The Sandia National Labs Science Advisor's Program gave him a chance to encourage students at Taft Middle School to pursue education in math, science and engineering. Optimists International conferred Life Member, Friend of Youth upon him. Governor Garry Carruthers recognized his volunteer work with a Volunteer Service Award. TV-7 chose him as a Jefferson Award winner for time and leadership to benefit the community. Travel was a special part of his life and trips throughout the U.S. took him to all 50 states. Foreign travel to Mexico, Canada, Europe, Scandinavia, Russia, British Isles, The Holy Land, Greece, Turkey, New Zealand, Australia, Fiji, and the Bahamas were enjoyed and enriched the lives of all the family. Their 50th anniversary was celebrated by the entire family in Switzerland and Italy. They enjoyed watching their granddaughters participate in sports, beginning with Little League softball and soccer; going thru high school softball, volleyball, golf, and cheerleading; and college softball. He is survived by his wife, Helen; son, Harlan E. Lenander, Jr. DDS and his wife, Marie of Albuquerque; daughter, Margaret Ann Greenhaw and husband, Charles of Harrison, AR; three granddaughters, Mary Lynn Lenander Leidolf and husband, Robert of Plano, TX, Sherry A. Lenander of Albuquerque and Lisa Marie Lenander, a student at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, TX; his sister, Mrs. Donald Cary of Alma, NE; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Peter and Phyllis Masiero of Albuquerque; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Donald and Maxine Richardson of Hudson, FL; and nieces and nephews, Doug and Vicki Cary, Bill and Vicky Cary, Barbara and John Anthony and Jay and Kathy Kingery. Lorraine A. Mahon, 82, a resident of Albuquerque since 1977, died Saturday, May 3, 2003. She is survived by her daughters, Jane Mahon and Peggy Mahon, both of Albuquerque; sons, Eugene Mahon of Nantucket, MA and Peter Mahon of Waldorf, MD; grandsons, Luke Markwith of Las Cruces, and Jackson Markwith and Cody Garringer, both of Albuquerque. Jose G. Martinez, 86, a lifetime resident of Tijeras, NM, was born May 12, 1916 and passed away Wednesday, May 7, 2003. He is survived by his daughters, Teresita (Terry) Martinez and Evelyn Chavez and husband, Dick; grandchildren, Robert Graham, Stephanie Wood and husband, Paul, Christopher Chavez, Anthony Chavez and girlfriend, Deidre Olguin; great- grandson, Scott Wood; sisters, Meres Griego and Betty Martinez; brothers, Arturo and wife, Flora, Ylfen and wife, Olympia, Eutemio and wife, Armida, Gonzalo and wife, Molly and Rafael and wife, Mary and many brothers/sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. Cleve E. Matthews, Lieutenant Colonel, USA (Ret), 64, died Tuesday, May 6, 2003. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Margareta Matthews of Albuquerque; son, Col. Earl D. Matthews and wife Debra and granddaughters Nicole and Christine of Colorado Springs, CO; son, Andreas H. Matthews and wife, Twyla and granddaughters Melissa and Kristen of Sugarland, TX; son, Dr. Jeffrey J. Matthews and wife, Renee and granddaughters Kathryn and Emily of University Place, WA; mother, Margaret Lampe of Dodge City, KS; brother, John Matthews of Dodge City, KS; stepbrother, Frank Lampe of Dallas, TX.; stepbrother, Mark Lampe of Offerle, KS.; stepbrother, Joseph Lampe of Fowler, KS.; and stepsister, Mary Lois Sullivan of Dodge City, KS. He was preceded in death by his father, Earl E. Matthews; stepfather, Henry F. Lampe; brother, Doral C. Matthews; and stepbrother, Linus Lampe. Colonel Matthews enlisted in the Regular Army on April 10, 1958 and received a direct commission in March 1965 as Second Lieutenant in the Adjutant General Corps. He retired from the US Army on November 1, 1983. He served two tours in Vietnam where he participated in five campaigns with the First Infantry Division. He has many awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, two awards of the Bronze Start Medal, three awards of the Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint Service Medal and three awards of the Army Commendation Medal. He earned a bachelors degree at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and a masters degree at Boston University. Following his retirement from the Army, he worked in Real Estate Development until July 2000 when he retired as Vice President of Sandia Properties, Ltd. Co. He was active in the New Mexico Chapter of the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties. He served as the Chapter's President in 1994. He was an adjunct instructor at the University of Maryland, Columbia College, Chapman College and National College. Rosary will be recited Friday, May 9, 2003, at 7:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, Wyoming Blvd. Chapel, with Deacon Alex Trujillo reciting. Bernadette Ortiz, 85, a resident of Rio Rancho for the past 15 years, past away on Wednesday, May 7, 2003. Bernadette was born January 24,1918 the daughter of Jacob Mora and Maria Espinosa in Chimayo, New Mexico. She was a wonderful homemaker and enjoyed cooking and making her famous chili. She was an avid wrestling fanatic and enjoyed spending time with her husband and family. Bernadette is survived by her husband of 66 years, Romaldo Ortiz, of the family home; ten children, Theresa Hernandez and husband, Rey of Albuquerque, Toni Gonzalez of Santa Fe, NM, Rosina Sills of Bakersfield, CA, Sonny Ortiz and wife, Virgina of Santa Fe, NM, Gilbert Ortiz and wife, Sara of Santa Fe, NM, Steve Ortiz and wife Bertha of Aurora, IL, Bernadette Torres and husband, Chris of Santa Fe, NM, Linda Marie Herrera and husband, Joe of Rio Rancho, NM, Mary Ortiz of Rio Rancho, NM, and adopted daughter, Linda; 26 grandchildren; 29 great- grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; special friends, Roberto and Mariam Xaiver and Margret Garduno of Santa Fe, NM. Visitations will be Saturday, May 10, 2003 from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m., Sunday, May 11, from 6:00 p.m.- 8:00 p.m. with a Rosary being recited at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Vista Verde Mortuary. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, May 12, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Church, interment will follow at Vista Verde Memorial Park, Sara Rd. at Meadowlark Ln., in Rio Rancho.

Mr. Fred D. Padilla died May 7, 2003 in Albuquerque at the age of 85. Mr. Padilla was a World War II veteran and a member of the American Legion Post 72. Mr. Padilla retired as a maintenance foreman with the State Highway Department. He is survived by his wife, Tillie B. Padilla of the family home; daughters, Dolores Lucero and Christina Sanchez; seven grandchildren, Angie Lucero, Denise Rivera, Thomas Lucero, Richard C. Anaya and wife, Jennifer, Inez Anaya, Robert Brown, and Andrew Sanchez; five great-grandchildren, Miranda Lucero, Courtney Lucero, Rebekah Lucero, Tristan Anaya and Fred Anaya. Funeral Services for Mr. Padilla will be held on Saturday at Ascension Catholic Church where the Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Pajarito Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Thomas Lucero, Richard C. Anaya, Angie Lucero, Denise Rivera, Inez Anaya and Robert Brown. Honorary pallbearer will be Andrew Sanchez. A Rosary will be recited on Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. at Ascension Church. Arrangements by:

Rachel W. Ronan, 80, a longtime resident of Albuquerque, passed away on Sunday, April 27, 2003. Born in Sodus, New York on August 2, 1922, she is survived by daughter, Marcia Padilla, son-in-law Ray, and grandchildren Brittany and Brian of Albuquerque; son, Daniel Ronan, daughter-in-law Lynette, and granddaughters Briana and Danielle of Houston, Texas; son, Michael Ronan and granddaughter Amy of Albuquerque, daughter, Susan Ronan of Los Lunas; brother, Rodger Wagner and sister-in-law Peg of Scottsdale, Arizona; nephew, Frank Wagner, wife Linda, and great-nieces Nicole, Christina, and Sharise of Scottsdale, Arizona; nephew, Douglas Wagner, wife Mari, and great-nephews Kai and Kenji of Seattle, Washington; and nephew, Ricardo Meza of Scottsdale, Arizona. She was preceded in death by nephew, Richard Wagner of Scottsdale, Arizona.
