John C. Stoumbis
April 3, 1926 - March 15, 2007
John C. Stoumbis, of Espanola, born April 3, 1926 and passed away on March 15, 2007 was born in Minot, North Dakota to Christ and Elena Stoumbis. He served in WWII, Battle of the Bulge and was decorated with a Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge and several European Campaign Ribbons. After WWII, he moved to New Mexico to study art, and for the climate. After studying under such well known artist's such as, John Sloan, Will Schuster and others he would gain a degree in fine arts at UNM. He exhibited throughout the US and many of his paintings now appear in private collections and galleries. Edna, his wife of 57 years and he collaborated on their gallery in Taos for many years. John and his love for New Mexico with its beautiful vistas, his love of hunting, fishing and love of the outdoors were reflected in his art. He is survived by his wife Edna, daughter Christine, son John William, granddaughter Andrea and grandson Alex. Mass of Christian burial will be offered on Tuesday March 20th at 12:30 pm at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Espanola with burial to follow at 3:00 pm at The Santa Fe National Cemetery in Santa Fe with military honors. JOHN CARMELITO TORRES Age 38 of Ohkay Owingeh passed away March 11, 2007 as a result of a short illness. He was preceded in death by his brother Kenneth Dean Archuleta and niece Wanda Lynn Archuleta. He is survived by his parents Frank and Beatrice Torres of Ohkay Owingeh, sister Deborah M. Torres of Ohkay Owingeh, Catherine Vigil of Tesuque Pueblo, brother C. Johnny Ernest Romero – Age 48 a resident of Fairview passed away on Saturday, August 12th, 2006. He was preceded in death by his father, Juan Andres Romero; and a brother, Billy Maez. JOSE GREGORIO SALAZAR – 67; A lifelong resident of Medanales, New Mexico passed away on Saturday, September 10, 2005, following a sudden illness. He married Onofre Abeyta on January 24, 1959, in Abiquiu, New Mexico. In February 2003 he retired from the City of Espanola after 20 years of service. He was preceded in death by a son, Peter Salazar; parents, Gregorio and Josefita Salazar; sister, Prescilina Garcia; and mother-in-law and father-in-law, Jose Leon and Bernardita Abeyta. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Onofre Salazar; two sons, Gregory Salazar of the home; and Dennis Salazar and Evelyn Maruska of Velarde; one daughter, Pita Salazar and Lorenzo Quintana; two granddaughters, Stephanie Salazar of Espanola; and Camila Salazar and fiancé Randy Garcia of Espanola; one grandson, Dennis Peter Salazar of Espanola two step-granddaughters Kristine and Jimmy Moya of Los Cruces, New Mexico and Jackie and Spencer Smith of Tennessee; a niece who was like a daughter, Simme Reyes of Rio Chama; two sisters, Eufemia Maestas and husband Santiago and Angie Maestas all of Chile; an aunt, Ignacita Martinez of Espanola. Ms. Trinidad Martinez age 90 of Chimayo died peacefully on Thursday November 22, 2007. She was born in Chimayo on October 4, 1917 to the late Jose and Seferina Martinez. She was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers; Frank and Calletano Martinez, three sisters; Solome Vargas, Leonarda Raymond and Ramoncita Espinoza, sister in law; Stephanita Martinez, brother in laws; Juan E. Mike Pete Vigil

Mike Pete Vigil – Mike fought a valiant battle against lung cancer for over two years. He succumbed to the disease on Tuesday, December 4, 2007. Mike was born on October 13, 1939 in El Guache to Gusman and Antonia Vigil who preceded him in death. He is also preceded in death by his sister, Christina Vigil; brother, Bobby Vigil and great-grandson, Silas Joseph Hernandez. Mike was in the National Guard, he worked for Duke City Lumber Yard and finally for Cook's Mercantile as a driver for 25 years. He enjoyed spending time with his family, camping, farming and working on his ranch. He had many friends from his years as a resident of El Guache and working at Cook's. Mike married Virginia War from El Guache, who are the proud parents of eleven children, twenty five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Seferino Salazar, Jr. – Age 76 a resident of Los Luceros passed away on Wednesday, February 21, 2007 following a brief illness. He was preceded in death by his parents: Seferino and Candelaria Salazar; grandparents: Silveria and Urban Martinez; brothers: Leandro, Bernardo "Gito", and Phil Salazar; sisters: Mary Archuleta and Elisa Salazar; and close nephew, Gilbert Valdez. May their souls rest in peace. Mr. Salazar served in the United States Army, he worked for a number of years in San Leandro, CA as a welder and also worked on building roads in Los Alamos. Rodolfo A. Valdez age 80 of Fairview, passed away on November 22, 2007. He was born on October 29, 1927 in Raton New Mexico. He graduated in 1945 from Raton High School and earned his Bachelors degree in Business Administration from the University of New Mexico in 1950. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the Naval Reserves. In partnership with his brother Reinaldo M. Valdez, he ran an accounting business for over 55 years in Espanola. He was instrumental in forming the Santa Cruz Church Parish Council and the Espanola Little League. He was a past member of The Knights of Columbus, the Kiwanis Club, and served on the Rio Arriba County 4-H Fair Board. He had a long and blessed marriage to Angelina Rodriguez Valdez, who he married in 1951 and who preceded him in death in 1989. He was also preceded in death by his parents Alejandro and Francesquita Valdez, brother Reinaldo M. Valdez and sister Amelia Trujillo. He is survived by his children Elena Valdez Matthews of Las Cruces and Carlos Valdez of Los Alamos, and granddaughter Monica O'Neal and husband Kevin O'Neal of Guthrie, Oklahoma. He was recently blessed with the arrival of great granddaughter Savannah Rhea O'Neal. He is also survived by brother Arthur L. Valdez of Las Cruces, and many loving and close relatives and friends. Recitation of the Rosary will be held on Monday, November 26th at 7:00 pm at La Iglesia de Santa Cruz de la Cañada. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the same church. Interment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery. The Rivera Family of Block-Salazar Mortuary, Espanola, NM.
