Carl V. Arnold, 80, a resident of Albuquerque for 45 years, died Saturday, May 13, 2000. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Rose M. Arnold of the family home; daughters, Linda Arnold of Denver, CO, Tara Francis and husband, Don, of Salt Lake City, UT, and Jean Brown of Albuquerque; sister, Marybelle Fisher and husband, James of Albuquerque; six grandchildren, Casey Hale and wife, Mareesha, Roger Hale, Nathan Hale, Crystal Wangsgaard, Mandy Francis and Arianna Brown; two great-grandchildren, Coral Wangsgaard and Aurie Wangsgaard, and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Arnold was WWII Veteran and served in the Army Air Corps in the European Theatre. He worked as an Air Traffic Controller, retiring from the FAA Center after 20 years. Albert A. Bailey, 38, a resident of Albuquerque died, Saturday, May 6, 2000. He is survived by his parents, Thomas and Cruz G. Bailey of Rio Rancho; brothers, Jose A. Bailey and wife, Susan of Colorado Springs, CO, and Thomas Bailey, Jr. and wife, Rachael of Albuquerque; sisters, Elizabeth Scroggins and husband, Jeff of Guthrie, OK and Rosie Hill and husband, Jeff of Corrales; daughter, Rachael Bailey of China Springs, TX; and grandmother, Rosa Gonzales of Andrews, TX. Mr. Bailey retired from the U.S. Army Special Forces and served in Somalia, and twice in Haiti. In his spare time he enjoyed building plastic models. Carlos Chavez, lifelong resident of Albuquerque, 69, born May 3, 1931, died in the care of his loving family after a year-long battle with cancer on May 11, 2000. He is survived by his children, Videla Chavez, Debbie and husband, Steve Larson, Karl Chavez and wife, Kathleen, Adolph Chavez and wife, Frances, Tammy and husband, Bill Evans, and Anthony (Tony) Chavez and wife, Jackie; 15 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and brothers, Delfino Chavez and Siegfredo Chavez. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Helen. Carlos served in the U.S. Navy for six years, then worked as an wireman for 44 years; he was a member of the IBEW local 611 during those 44 years of service. Carlos was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was a friend to all who knew him, and was a wonderfully, caring person who will be missed by many friends and acquaintances along with his loving family. Family members would like to thank the staff at UNM Cancer Research Center and UNM Hospice for their genuine efforts and the benevolent care he received. Glada LaVonne Courington, 74, died Wednesday, May 10, 2000, in her sleep. She was active in regional theatre, and designed make-up for many local stage productions as well as television performers. She retired after a career in the Civil Service, and was one of original volunteer aircraft spotters in the U.S. Ground Observer Corps. Born September 23, 1925, in Versailles, MO, to the late Charles and Ellen Hollcroft, she had been a resident of Albuquerque since 1952. She met R. Doyle Courington, a popular southwestern artist at Central United Methodist Church, and they were married in 1966. They worked together on many church projects to benefit youth and the incarcerated. Doyle died in October, 1997. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Laura Geering, and Lois Carnes. She is survived by her two sons, Gregory Lay of Bosque Farms, and C. Alan Lay and wife, Kathy of Denton, TX; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sister, Sally-Alice Thompson of Albuquerque; and brother, Carroll Hollcroft of Howe, TX. Following cremation, she's at rest with her husband at Santa Fe National Cemetery. Memorial Services will be held Tuesday, 10:00 a.m. at Central United Methodist Church, 1615 Copper NE. Dorothy L. Farr died on May 11, 2000. She is survived by her son, Frederick Farr; daughter, Barbara Renner and her husband, Charles of Phoenix, Arizona; and grandchildren, Sarah Farr, Jason Farr, Jackie Renner, and Brian Renner. She was a member of Immanuel Presbyterian Church, being active as a Deaconess and with the Presbyterian Women's Group. Dorothy was a devoted wife and mother and dedicated her life to her family, friends and neighbors. Mildred "Millie" L. Gerding, 87, a resident of Albuquerque since 1935, died Wednesday, May 10, 2000. She is survived by her daughter, Millie White McMahon and husband, John T. McMahon; grandchildren, Jack and Mollie McMahon. Her second family includes, Bob and Harriet Gerding: grandchildren, Mike, Patrick, Laura and Flint Morris; great-grandchildren, J. T. and Melanie Morris; Dick and Eileen Gerding, Dr. David Gerding, and Christine Gerding; Clarilou (deceased) and Jim Bryce; grandchildren, Deena, Dan, Doug, and Don Bryce. She is also survived by her brother, Wilford Cheedle of Grand Junction, CO; niece, Marie Reed of Grand Junction, CO; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 27 years, Fred A. White, whom she married on December 3, 1940; and her second husband of eight years, Lou Gerding, whom she married on August 15, 1971. Mrs. Gerding moved to Albuquerque from Colorado as a nurse to work for Presbyterian Hospital. She had been active in many community organizations; she was president of Junior League of Albuquerque in 1944, active in setting up Cerebral Palsy Day School, and the June Music Festival. She was a board member and active in Community Concerts and the Albuquerque Little Theatre, where she also participated in some productions. She was a leader in Brownie and Girl Scout Troops, where she also served as a board member. Mrs. Gerding taught Red Cross Nurses Aid and Home Nursing Courses. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and friend. Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be held Tuesday, May 16th, 10:00 a.m., at First United Methodist Church, 4th and Lead SW, with Rev. Clyde Stanfield officiating. Georgia M. Jones, 73, a resident of Albuquerque since 1953, died Friday, May 12, 2000. Georgia is survived by her husband, Donald J. Jones of Albuquerque; two daughters, Carol Ann Jones and fiance, Mark Campbell of Albuquerque and Barbara J. Decker and her husband, Douglas W. Decker of Gallup, NM; one son, Robert W. Jones and partner in life, Monika Martinez both of Albuquerque; three sisters, Irene Mitchell of Provo, Utah, Joanne Colledge of Prescott, AZ, and Mary Murray of Orem, Utah; one brother, John "Jack" Mitchell of St. George, Utah; two grandsons and three granddaughters. Georgia was very active in the community. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The church was a passion of hers and a place where she gave of her time and efforts as a volunteer. Georgia was also a volunteer at the Veteran's Hospital. She was a graduate with honors from Brigham Young University. In her spare time, she was an avid reader, painter and enjoyed handwork. She worked crossword puzzles and loved working in her magnificent garden. Above all she loved and was greatly involved with her grandchildren. Quentin Guy Klingler, 75, was born August 24, 1924, in St. Anthony, Idaho, to Karl C. and Genevieve Cardon Klingler. He was drafted out of the University of Utah to fight for the U.S. Army in Belgium and France during World War II. After recovering from a wound, he returned to the United States, served on a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and completed research and a degree in physics at the University of Utah. He and Cynthia Kaufman Klingler married in 1964. He worked as a health physicist and a nuclear physicist until the late 1980s. After he retired, he served as a constant consultant to both the U.S. government and his children. He died May 10, 2000. He will be desperately missed by many friends and relatives, his children, and his canine companions, Bill and Penny. Samuel Martinez, age 77, passed away May 13, 2000 at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque following an illness. Samuel was born July 18, 1922 in Corona, NM to the home of Pedro and Josefita Vigil Martinez. He married Eva Zamora on April 28, 1941 in Vaughn, NM. Samuel worked for the Vaughn School system as a custodian for 33 years retiring in 1979. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Vaughn. Samuel is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Eva, brothers, Blas Martinez, Frutsoso Martinez and Eliseo Martinez. Survivors include his children, Dorothy Garcia and husband, Roman of Vaughn, Antonia Sanchez and Charlie of Albuquerque, Samuel J. Martinez and wife, Christine of Santa Rosa, Rudy Martinez and wife, Helen of Vaughn, Anna Aragon and husband, Dickie of Tijeras and Debbie Torres and husband, Anthony of Albuquerque; three brothers, Benito Martinez of Vaughn, Juan Martinez of Albuquerque and Arturo Martinez of Santa Rosa; one sister, Gloria Hernandez of Albuquerque; also surviving are 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of relatives and friends. Alice E. Merren, 74, passed away Friday after a yearlong illness. She was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, George T. Merren. She is survived by her three sons, Richard Wagner of Bangkok, Thailand, Tom and David Merren of Albuquerque, New Mexico; her brother, Pete Snyder of Chicago, Illinois; two daughters-in-law, and two granddaughters. John Dewey Paez passed away on May 12, 2000 at the age of fifty-four. His son, John Raphael Paez, his two daughters, Joanie Paez and Tina Paez, his mother, Mary Paez; his brothers, Thomas Paez, Charles Paez, Ralph Paez; his sister, Anna Paez; and many cousins, uncles, aunts, nieces, and nephews survive him. His father passed away several winters this July. John Dewey Paez was born on January 11, 1946. He was raised in Albuquerque and attended St. Pius X High School. He attended pharmacy school at UNM and went on to dental school in Kansas City, MO. Moving back to Albuquerque after graduating dental school, it was a matter of several short years before he set up his own practice in the South Valley. After a decade of dentistry, he was elected to the UNM Board of Regents, where he served the community for six years. He continued his dental practice until his death. John Dewey Paez was an avid horseracing fan, and he spent many a jocund eve relaxing with friends as he watched horses of his ownership win first place. He was exceedingly kind and generous. His children were the main focus of his later life, and he did everything in his power to provide shoulders to stand on that they might reach the stars of their dreams. "Dewey ", as all of his family knew him, had a shining sense of humor and cracked jokes upon his deathbed. He placed an unusual value on life in each passing day for he sensed the fleeting, flickering candle burned all too fast. Hew died peacefully, not fighting his own mortality, not seeking control, only cherising each day as a gift of fate. In the weeks before he died, he gave his family many an "I love you ". Revenna Soblick,, 73, a resident of Albuquerque since 1968, passed away on May 12, 2000, surrounded by her loving family. Robert S. Summers, 76, a resident of Albuquerque since 1951, died Saturday, May 13, 2000. He is survived by his wife, Jeanette Summers of Albuquerque; sons, Gary Summers of Albuquerque, Stephen Summers of Westminister, CO and Byron Summers and wife, Susan of Divide, CO; daughter, Charlotte Summers of Seattle, WA; grandsons, Christopher Summers, Ian Summers, and Sean Summers all of Divide, CO; granddaughter, Alexa Summers of Placitas, NM; grandson, Jason Summers of TN; great-grandson, Taobear Romero of Placitas; sisters, Mary Walker and Laverne Summers of IL, and Margaret Brand of Florissant, MO. Robert was a NM State Registered Engineer and was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa. He served in the 8th Air Force after high school and saw action in WWII. He earned degrees in Engineering from the University of Kentucky and University of Florida. He was employed at Sandia National Laboratories for 42 years. John Kneen ( "Wich ") Wichelns, 75, a resident of Albuquerque, passed away Friday, May 12, 2000. Wich is survived by his four children (all born in Albuquerque), Ken Wichelns of Albuquerque, Karen Weber of Pueblo, CO, Jan Cross and husband, Jai of Tijeras, NM and Jill Wichlens and husband, Richard Gabriel of Denver, CO; brother, Miles Wichelns and wife, Phyllis of Sacramento, CA; and three granddaughters, Megan Weber, Laura Gabriel, and Kathleen Gabriel. Wich was the son of Lee and Ellen Wichelns of Bridgeport, CT. He served aboard a convoy escort vessel in the American, European, and South Pacific theaters during World War II and also participated in the liberation of the Phillipines. After his discharge from the Navy, Wich attended the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque where he belonged to the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. Following graduation he married Maureen Butterfield on October 6, 1950 in Chicago, IL. Shortly after their marriage, the Wichelns returned to Albuquerque where Wich worked at Sandia National Laboratories and Maureen founded Marketing Services of New Mexico. He served as a staff member at Sandia for 34 years, working mostly in the purchasing and computing departments. He also served as a scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts of America and regularly attended church at the Aquinas Newman Center. Wich and Maureen greatly enjoyed their retirement years together, traveling to many regions of the United States in their motor home and flying to Germany, England, Mexico, the Caribbean, Spain, and Canada. Maureen preceded him in death in January 1998. A Celebration of Life for family and friends will be held on Sunday, May 21, 2000, 2:00 p.m. at the family home. Helen M. Albrecht, 90, passed away at St. Clare Meadows Care Center in Baraboo, WI on Tuesday, April 10, 2001. Helen was born on November 25, 1910 in Indiana. She moved to New Mexico with her first husband, Edgar Murray, who later passed away while they where traveling in Sweden. Helen and Edgar had a bowling alley in Los Lunas, NM and a dairy farm in Bosque Farms, NM. Helen was the last living founder of the Peralta Memorial Methodist Church. She enjoyed working in the local libraries and helped to establish the Los Lunas Public Library. She also worked in the county clerk's office. Helen graduated from De Pauw University where she was a member of Delta Zeta Sorority. In 1980, after being a widow for three years, she married James Albrecht. She was a member of St. Camillus in Wisconsin. Helen is survived by her loving husband, James Albrecht, of Merrimac, WI; the Murray children, Donald and wife, Alanna of Phoenix, Douglas of Las Vegas, Paul and wife, Gail of Albuquerque, Bruce and wife, Carole of CA; one special granddaughter, Lisa; the Albrecht children, James M. and wife, Rita of Merrimac, WI, Margaret and husband, Hank Loncki of Lodi, WI, Barbara and husband, Phil Rowley of AL, and Mike of Albuquerque; and eight special grandchildren. Doug Coy, 72, a resident of Albuquerque died Sunday, May 13, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Lola Coy; daughter, Christine Koch of Lakeland, FL; granddaughters, Sherri Brockman-Tabb and husband, Jack and Teresa Madonia and husband, Stephen; great-grandchildren, Addison Tabb, Austin Brockman, Savannah Brockman, Stephen Madonia, Jr., and Lauren Madonia. Doug was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. His life was very much devoted to his family. He was a member of the Quarter Horse Association. Doug will be missed very much. Martha Jane Davis, 47, formerly of Belen and now of Los Lunas peacefully passed away on Saturday, May 12, 2001. She was a member of Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church. Martha was a graduate of Belen High School. She worked at the Circle K in Belen for several years. She then moved on to work for the Giant Corporation as clerk in the Los Lunas store and then went on to work at the Isleta Gaming Palace until her illness. She loved her husband, Robbin with all her heart and her son, Matt and his girlfriend, Michelle and her grandson, Marcos, who lit up her life with joy. She was preceded in death by her parents, Pedro and Flora Ornelas and one sister, Josephita "Josie" Niedens. Martha is survived by her husband of twelve years, Robbin; her son, Matt and his girlfriend, Michelle; and her loving grandson, Marcos all of Los Lunas. She also leaves behind her dear brothers and sisters, Simon Ornelas and his wife, Bertha; Arthur Ornelas and a special friend Mike Frelander; Odie Davis; and Connie Montoya and her husband, Tony. She is also survived by her loving nieces, nephews, cousins and many other loved ones. Marie "LaVergne ", 80, Beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to many, peacefully returned home to Our Heavenly Father on Thursday May 10th. She was born on November 6th, 1920 in Albuquerque. She was an active member of "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints" and served the church in many positions. Her family and the gospel were the light of her life. No one was ever a stranger to her and she was always ready to help. She is survived by her six children, Dennis Hansen and wife, Laurie of Twin Falls Idaho, Peggy Montgomery and husband, Richard, Linda P. King, Carolyn L. McClosky and her husband, Jack, Charlie E. Esposito, Yvonne Gibney and her husband, Lou, all residents of New Mexico. She has 15 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her two sisters, Evelyn Oates and her husband, Larry of Albuquerque and Louise Lasley of California. She was loved and will be greatly missed but always remembered by those who knew her. Viewing will held from 9:00 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. in the Relief Society Room at the Haines St. Chapel with services following at 10:00 a.m. in the Haines St. Chapel. There will be no graveside services. Strong-Thorne Mortuary at 1100 Coal Ave SE is in charge of the arrangements.
Barbara 'Bobbie' Hopper, 76, a resident of Albuquerque since 1949, died Monday, May 14, 2001. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Roy F. Hopper of Albuquerque; daughters, Gayle S. Ferguson and husband, Steve of Colorado Springs, CO and Denise Keefe and husband, Don of Albuquerque; granddaughter, Kellie Keefe; grandson, Joey Keefe, both of Albuquerque; and sister, Marie Merritt and husband, Lamar of Carmichael, CA. She was a member of Northeast Church of Christ. Services will be held Thursday, 10:00 a.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, 1111 University Blvd. NE, with John Phillis officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul NE. Pallbearers will be Ernie Blair, Wilburn Griffin, Steve Ferguson, Richard Lambert, T.J. Archer and Joe Mahaffey. Honorary pallbearers will be Frank Ulibarri, Frank Gurule, Jeff Vernon and Don Keefe. Elsie Lucille (Lou) Hughes, 73, loving wife, mother, grandmother, Great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, has been called home by the Lord on Saturday, May 12, 2001. Lou was born in Vernon Township, Lake County, Illinois on July 27, 1927. She moved to Gillette, Wyoming as a small child and eventually resided in Sheridan, Wyoming for most of her life. She married Eugene A. Hughes on July 26, 1954. They moved to Long Beach, CA in 1969 and then to Albuquerque, NM in 1974 where she sold Real Estate for a few years. She was a long-time employee of Murphy's Mule Barn as a cashier and manager. She is survived by her loving husband, Eugene (Gene) Hughes; step-son, Eugene (Gene) Hughes of Great Falls, MT; daughter, Velma Edson and husband, Jerry of Idaho Falls, ID, daughter, Ruth Kho and husband, Robert of Corrales, NM, daughter, Doris Drennan and husband, Larry of Albuquerque, NM, daughter, Delores (Zip) Ashby and husband, Ray of Sophia, NC; 24 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; and one sister, June Ward of Alton, IL. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, May 18, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Vista Verde Mortuary, Sara Rd. at Meadowlark Ln., Rio Rancho with Graveside services immediately following. Jerry Edson and Demille Kirkpatrick officiating. Friends and loved ones are invited to share a meal and fellowship at the family home following services.
