A very special person, Daniel Anthony Lujan, who had a great heart, a great mind, and a beautiful soul, passed away on Saturday, June 23, 2001. Beloved Daniel was born on May 8, 1983 in Albuquerque, NM and later moved to Los Lunas in 1993 with his parents, Daniel and Lorraine Lujan. Daniel was the oldest of his brothers, Jonathan and Jason Lujan. He is preceded in death by his grandfather, Antonio Lujan. Daniel is survived by his parents; brothers; grandparents, Silviano and Leonila Mora and grandmother, Estella Lujan, all of Albuquerque. He is also remembered by aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. Daniel will be missed dearly by all who knew and loved him, may he rest in peace. Lucinda (Cindy) Duncan Lujan, a resident of Albuquerque, passed into her heavenly home on June 26, 2001. She was born to Lydia and Nathaniel Duncan in Stillwell, OK on November 8, 1917. Mrs. Lujan is survived by her sister, Beulah Duncan Paisano and husband, U.G.; sister-in-law, Julie Poncho of Richmond, CA; nieces, Merle-Dean Paisano Sanchez and husband, Joseph and Cheryl Jean Paisano; nephew, Evans Ray; great-niece and goddaughter, D'Anza Sanchez Mummert and husband, Ryan, all of Albuquerque; and great-nephew, Dr. Damion P. Sanchez of Seattle, WA. She is also survived by her loving canine companion, Pug. Mrs. Lujan was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband of 46 years, Paul Lujan; and her sister, Marquerite Duncan Ray. In 1925 the family of Mrs. Lujan moved from Oklahoma to Clovis, NM. In 1932 she and her family moved to Albuquerque. Mrs. Lujan attended the Albuquerque Indian School. She graduated from the Sherman Indian Institute in Riverside, CA. Mrs. Lujan was employed by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. She served as the head cook and dietician at the Albuquerque Indian School until her retirement in 1973. Mrs. Lujan was a member of the Albuquerque Cherokee Club. She was a Christian lady who deeply loved the Lord Jesus Christ. Mrs. Lujan was a member of the First Baptist Church of Albuquerque. Services will be held Thursday, 2:00 p.m., at Chester T. French Memorial Mausoleum Chapel, 924 Menaul NE, with Rev. Tom Collins officiating. Entombment will follow. Pallbearers will be Ulysses G. Paisano, Joseph P. Ernest O'dell Martin, 77, who resided in Albuquerque for over 50 years, recently passed away on Saturday, June 23, 2001 in Stockton, California. Mr. Martin ran the shoe shine stand in the Hilton Hotel. He is survived by his children, Mary Catherine Becknell, (CA), Ernest Martin Jr. (AZ), Christina Holmes (USVI), Adam Martin (TX), Dominic Martin (AZ); grandchildren, Desiree Jackson (GA), Valerie Becknell (GA), Charles Becknell Jr. (NM), Richard Sanchez (NM), Kristen Holmes (USVI), Keith Holmes (USVI), Adam Martin Jr. (NM), De'Vante Martin (NM), Simone Martin (NM); great-grandchildren, Roger Jackson (GA), Andrea Jackson (GA), Brianna Holmes (CA), India Buckley (TX), Jayden Sanchez (NM); and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and long time friends. Funeral Services will be held in Meridian, Mississippi. Professional arrangements are entrusted to Enterprise Funeral Home, 3207 11th St. Meridian, Mississippi.

John Benhard Mattson, Jr., 70, an Industrial Engineer at the Postal Rate Commission from 1976 until his retirement in 2000, died of a heart attack on June 22, 2001 at his home in Rockville, Md. Mr. Mattson, a native of Newton, Mass., received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics and Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a Master of Science Degree from the University of New Mexico, and Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School in 1962. A member of Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity, he served as a lst Lieutenant in the U. S. Army from 1952 to 1954 and later worked for ACF Industries in Albuquerque, N.M., his adopted state, where he also served two terms as a Republican legislator for District 14. In 1968, Mr. Mattson co-founded Mecca Computer Systems, Inc., and served as its president until relocating to the Washington, D.C., area in 1976. Mr. Mattson was a member of Faith United Methodist Church in Rockville where he participated in the "Russia Initiative" of the UM Volunteers-in-Mission program, participating in reconstruction and social outreach work trips to Vladimir, Russia, as well as Christmas in April and other community activities. Survivors include Nancy Wilburn Mattson, his wife of 42 years; three sons, John Edward, Thomas Michael, (Angela Livers) and Robert Wilburn, (Marvionni); and five grandchildren, Micailya, Alexzondra, Darius, Mackenzie, and Nicholas; he is also survived by one brother, Melvin Mattson (Christa); and two sisters, Muriel Kulow (Frederick) and Lynne Knauss (John). The family will receive friends at Pumphrey's Funeral Home, 300 West Montgomery Avenue, Rockville, MD. on Tuesday, June 26, 2001 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held at Faith United Methodist Church in Rockville, Md., at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 27, 2001. A private interment will take place in the Faith Methodist Church Memorial Garden. Dorothy S. McDowell, born July 5, 1915, passed away at home in El Paso, TX on Saturday, June 23, 2001. Mrs. McDowell was a 60-year resident of Albuquerque prior to moving to El Paso, TX. Her husband, L.E. McDowell; son, David L. McDowell; and daughter, Mary Lou Roady preceded Mrs. McDowell in death. She is survived by her sons, Guy Allen McDowell of Corrales and William J. McDowell and wife, Marsha also of Corrales; daughter, Kathleen Armstrong and husband, Joe of El Paso, TX; brother, Roger Seddon of Albuquerque; sister, Peggy Valencich of Sacramento, CA; step-mother, Aubrey Seddon of Ft. Worth, TX; 15 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, June 29, 2001, at French Mortuary, University Blvd Chapel, 1111 University Blvd NE, with Rev. Gerald Farley officiating. Mr. David A. Orozco, 64, a resident of Albuquerque passed away peacefully at home on June 26, 2001 and is now in heaven with our Lord. Mr. Orozco, is the beloved husband to Louise Orozco and her son, Bobby Chavez; four daughters, Germaine Otero and husband, Jerry, Monica Orozco-Duran, Stephanie Abeyta and Dezi, Michele Ortega and Paul; two sons, Domonic Orozco and wife, Tina and Pasqual Orozco and wife, Judith; four sisters, Rosemary Dennis and husband, Robert, Grace Gurule, Stella Murphy and husband, John and Patsy Felix; very blessed to have 21 1/2 grandchildren, Domonic, Kristin, Melissa, Justine, Christopher, Nathan, Jude, Brittany, Nicholas, Manuel, Cera, Santana, Cheyenne, Dezi, Anthony, David, Nico, Marissa, Paul, Cody and Zane; his first great grandson, Rudy. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by eldest son, Rudy R. Orozco. He was a member of the Catholic Church, Teamster-Local 492, was involved in the North Valley Little League. Willard Parkins, 85, a resident of Albuquerque since 1992, died on Saturday, June 23, 2001. He is survived by his daughters, Suzann Kisiel and husband, Walter of Albuquerque and Kay Kovacs and husband, George of Irwin, PA; granddaughters, Karen Kovacs and Kimberly Kovacs of Philadelphia and Katherine Kisiel of Austin, TX; grandson, Kevin Kisiel of Ann Arbor, MI; his loving companion of nine years, Barbara Steinberg of Albuquerque; brothers, Don Parkins and wife, Shirley of Stuart, FL and Bud Parkins and wife, Betty of McMurray, PA; and sister, Thelma Hallam of Indiana. Willard was a very avid golfer who loved to play at Los Altos and had several hole-in-ones during his lifetime. He also enjoyed playing bridge and woodworking. Memorial Services will be held in Irwin, Pennsylvania at a later date. Mr. Parkins will be interred next to his devoted wife of 53 years, Jessie Parkins, in Pennsylvania.

Larry E. Smith, 57, a resident of Albuquerque since 1952, died on Saturday, June 23, 2001. He is survived by his son, Marty A. Smith and wife, Shannon of California; mother, Delores Smith of New Mexico; brother, Stephen Smith and wife, Donna of New Mexico; niece, Jessica and many friends. Services will be held on Thursday, June 28, 2001, 1:00 p.m. at French Mortuary, Wyoming Chapel, 7121 Wyoming Blvd. N.E. Private interment to follow at Sandia Memory Gardens, 9500 San Pedro N.E. Mihai Spilca, 48, a resident of Belen for 20 years, died Sunday, June 17, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Elena Spilca; son, Mihai Spilca; daughters, Mihaela Spilca and Marica Stefan and husband, Adrian; granddaughter, Adina Stefan; mother, Maria Spilca; brothers, Nicolae Spilca and family and Ilie Spilca and family, all of Belen. Services will be held Thursday, 3:00 p.m., at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 308 High SE, with Father Mario Giannopoulos officiating. Everett L. Westfahl, 69, of Albuquerque passed away peacefully in his sleep at 12:35 a.m. on Monday, June 25, 2001 at Presbyterian Kaseman Hospital Hospice Unit in Albuquerque, New Mexico, after a five-year battle with prostate cancer. He is preceded in death by his parents, Fritz and Ruby Westfahl; and his older brother, Paul Westfahl all of Haven, KS; and his third and fourth wives,Sandra Stepleton and Chris McCrea Westfahl of Albuquerque, NM. He is survived by his oldest brother, Fred Westfahl and his wife, Ronnie of Kinsley, KS; their children, Kathy Rishel, Randy Westfahl, Rock Westfahl and their spouses and children; his sister-in-law, Mary Ann Westfahl of Haven, KS; and her children, Kenny Westfahl, Peggy Thompson, Arlene Bontrager, and Diane Goldberg and their spouses and children; his first and second wives, Marilyn J. Peirce of Hutchinson, KS and Nancy H. Thoman of Seminole, FL; his daughter, Ann Kroll and her husband, Paul of Albuquerque, NM; and his step-children, Pam Gross and her husband, Steve; and their children, Nesbit, MS, Chuck McCrea, his children and his wife, Shelley, Mark McCrea and his wife, Alice and their children; and Marc Salter and his wife, Shanna, all of Albuquerque, NM. Everett Westfahl was born in Hutchinson, KS on January 28, 1932 and he grew up on the Westfahl family farm near Haven, Kansas. He graduated from Haven High School in 1949. He attended Hutchinson Junior College and Kansas State University, graduating from Kansas State University in 1955 with a BS degree in Electrical Engineering. He accepted a position on the technical staff at Sandia National Laboratories in 1955. He left Sandia National Laboratories in 1973 and became an Electronic Sales Representative with Barnhill and Associates in 1973, before joining Aztec Enterprises in 1974. He later formed his owned electronic sales organization, Westfahl and Associates in 1985. He retired from full time sales at Westfahl and Associates in 1995. He enjoyed many years of serving his numerous customers throughout the states of New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Nevada, and Colorado. He also enjoyed serving four years as president of the ISE, which conducted annual electronic trade shows in Albuquerque. A Memorial Service for Everett Westfahl will be held on Monday, July 2, 2001 at 3:00 p.m. at French Mortuary, Wyoming Chapel, 7121 Wyoming Blvd. N.E., with Pastor Dale Bauer, Dr. Ralph Friedenberg, and Dave Smoker, officiating. Private interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd N.E. Guests will be received at the home of Chuck and Shelley McCrea after the Memorial Service. We would like to thank the numerous doctors and nurses who provided Everett with dedicated and quality care, including Doctors Ralph Friedenberg, Neil Kaminsky, Richard Giudice, Amanda Story, Clifford Evans, Jonathan Lackner, William Thompson, Jr., and Paul Anthony. CHARLES M. ORTIZ, 78, of Rociada died Sunday at the Northeastern Regional Hospital following a brief illness. He was born Dec. 7, 1922, in Rociada. He worked for J.D. Christian Engineers in San Francisco, working in the Navy shipyards. He also worked for the Bittenger Co. in Los Alamos. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked with the Water Maintenance Crew for the city of Compton, Calif., for 10 years and moved back to Rociada in 1988. He was an avid gardener and fond of growing roses. He was a member of the Santo Niņo Church in Rociada. He was preceded in death by his parents Abedon and Maria I. Ortiz; wife, Lena; brothers Ricardo and Juan Ortiz; and several nephews and nieces. He is survived by his sons, Ronald Ortiz and wife Maria of Lakewood, Calif., Frank Ortiz and wife Soni of Rociada, and David Ortiz and wife Stacey of Redondo Beach, Calif.; brothers Jose Ortiz and wife Dolores of Rociada, Abedon Ortiz Jr. and wife Marcelina of Pojoaque, and Manuel Ortiz and wife Grace of Fort Morgan, Colo.; sisters Martina Martinez of Rociada, Emelia Abeyta and husband Jose of Montezuma, and Maria Elena Lujan and husband Arcenio (Adan), all of Rociada; aunt, Encarnacion Paiz of Rociada; and numerous nieces and nephews. DAVID R. ROMERO, 43, of Sheridan, N.M., died Saturday. He was born in Sheridan to Felipe C. Romero and Josie Lujan Romero. He served in the U.S. Army. He was a heavy equipment operator and a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his father. He is survived by his children Julie L. Romero, and Christina L. Romero, both of Las Vegas, N.M.; mother, Josie L. Romero of Sheridan; sisters and brothers Mary Day and husband Jerry of Colorado Springs, Colo., Lucy Sanchez and husband Anthony of Santa Rosa, Gilbert Romero of Las Vegas, Nev., Phillip Romero and wife Margaret of Santa Rosa, Josephine Sena, and Linda Cordova and husband Dean, all of Longmont, Colo., Dolores Romero of Broomfield, Colo., and Frank Romero of Sheridan; mother of his children, Mary Aragon of Las Vegas, N.M.; and numerous other relatives and friends. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church. Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Thursday at the same church. Cremation will follow. DESIREE A. VILLALOBOS, 3 months old, of Espaņola died Thursday following a brief illness. She is survived by her parents Albert and Shannon Villalobos of Espaņola; brothers Albert, and Brandon Villalobos of Espaņola; maternal grandparents Delbert and Lina Sanchez of Espaņola; paternal grandparents Francisco and Lillian Villalobos; paternal grandfather, Adonais Serrano of Gallina; paternal grandmother, Minnie Martinez of La Villita; maternal grandparents Amarante and Simmie Gonzales of Espaņola; and numerous other relatives and friends. A final visitation for Mrs. Juanita U. Clyde V. Burns Beeler, 96, a resident of Aztec, NM, passed away Tuesday, June 25, 2002 at home, after a lengthy illness associated with a stroke. She was born May 19, 1906 in Quanah, TX, the daughter of William and Mary Youngblood. Clyde lived in Aztec for 20 years and then moved to Albuquerque, where she lived until 1998 when she returned to Farmington. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Walter Burns in 1966 and Clyde A. Beeler in 1990; daughter, Fay Reese; and her seven siblings. Clyde is survived by three children, Eugene Burns and wife, Marg of Carney, OK, Lyle Burns and wife, Polly of Albuquerque and Lyla Atkinson and husband, Blaine of Farmington; ten precious grandchildren; 22 lovely great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces. Her granddaughter, Rhonda Johanson, cared for Clyde in her home during the last two years of her life. Services will be held Friday, 2:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, 1111 University Blvd. NE, with Rev. Clyde Stanfield officiating. Bernice K. Butterbaugh, 90, a resident of Albuquerque for 52 years, died Wednesday, June 26, 2002. She was preceded in death by her husband, William H. Butterbaugh, Jr. of 54 years. Mrs. Butterbaugh is survived by her sister, Audrey Snelson of Amarillo, TX; son, James F. Butterbaugh of Albuquerque; niece, Rita Peck of Houston, TX; grandsons, James T. Butterbaugh and Scott A. Butterbaugh; and granddaughters, Laura Butterbaugh, Louise Butterbaugh and Lucille Butterbaugh. She was born in Racine, WI. Larry B. "Papa Bear" Calame, 69, a resident of Albuquerque since 1961, died Sunday, June 23, 2002. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Bernie Calame of Albuquerque; daughters, Dolyn Jones and husband, Joey of Phoenix, AZ and Brenda Williams and husband, Greg of Albuquerque; grandson, Jerrett Williams of Albuquerque; granddaughter, Kyleigh Williams of Albuquerque; and many loving friends. Larry loved to travel, tell stories and was an avid race fan. He was kind and generous with a loving heart and had a soft spot for those in need. Larry was a proud husband, father, grandfather and a loyal friend to many. He was always happy for other people's accomplishments. Mr. Calame served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. He worked for the Frisco Railroad and then worked for 39 years for TWA. After retiring, he worked at Spa and Billiard World. Rose M. Chavez, 82, went home to be with the Lord on June 26, 2002. She was born on October 1, 1919 in Vaughn, NM. She was a parishioner of St. Bernadette Catholic Church. Rose is survived by her brother Frank Madrid; sister, Irene Lovato; nephews and nieces, James Madrid and wife, Rita, Pat Pertner and husband, Jerry, Jessica Torres and husband, Ely, Jude Lovato; and several grand-nephews and nieces. She will be deeply missed by her loving family. A Rosary will be recited on Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. at St. Bernadette Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. also at St. Bernadette Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jerry Pertner, Jacob Pertner, Nick Pertner, Jude Lovato, Ralph Gutierrez and Jesse Vigil. Sophie Domme Chiordi, asleep in Jesus June 22, 2002. She had been ill for several months and had broken her pelvic bone two weeks ago. She died peacefully in her sleep. Sophie is survived by her son, Michael John Chiordi and Helen Corcoran Chiordi; and her daughter, Carol Ann Chiordi-Jones and her husband, Charles. Sophie, wife of the late John Chiordi, was a longtime resident of Albuquerque. She is also survived by her brother, Clarance Domme; sisters-in-law, Hilde Chiordi, Katherine Domme, and Wilma Domme Tashing of Albuquerque; and her sisters, Margaret Theis of St. Louis, Mary Ann Padgett and her husband, Bill of Topeka, and Sister Elizabeth Domme of Leavenworth, Kansas. Sophie had three grandchildren, Angelus Person of Albuquerque, Michelann Tachibana of Dallas, and Bryan Michael Chiordi Jones of Phoenix. She had seven great-grandchildren. Sophie's husband, John, who died in 1990, was the owner of United Wholesale Liquor Company and before that, owner of Chiordi Baking Company. Her son, Michael, is manager of Southern Wine and Spirits of New Mexico. Mass will be celebrated Thursday, June 27, 2002, 10:30, at Immaculate Conception Church, 619 Copper NW, with Father Edward Domme, Celebrant. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bryan Chiordi Jones, Wes Tachibana, Gary Person, John Franchinni, Dan Domme and Ernest Montgomery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Casa Angelica, 5629 Isleta SW, 87105. French Mortuary, 1111 University Blvd. NE.

Grace Dexter, 77, a resident of Albuquerque since 1955, died Tuesday, June 25, 2002. She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Henry V. Dexter Jr. of Albuquerque; sons, Jack James Jr. and wife, Mary, Thomas Michael James and wife, Lana, Robert James, all of Albuquerque and Charles James of Ohio; daughter, Merriam Johnson of Florida; 19 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brothers, Samuel Chew and Ralph Chew; sisters, Sarah Anderson, Iva Jeanne Williams and Olive Wolf; and many nieces, nephews; and friends. Mrs. Dexter was born in Lancaster, PA and moved to Albuquerque in 1955. She worked at Kirtland Air Force Base as a security stenographer. Mrs. Dexter was a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother and will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She was a member of two Good Sam Chapters, The Zia Roamers and The Duke City Sams. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Coronado Ward. Memorial Services will be held Friday, June 28, 2002, 12:00 noon, at French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE. Interment of cremains will take place at a later date.

Dr. David A. Freiwald, 61, a long-term resident of Albuquerque, died Tuesday, June 25, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Joyce Freiwald of Albuquerque; sons, Wes Freiwald and wife, June of Maui, HI, Todd Freiwald and wife, Wendy of Germantown, MD, and Chris Freiwald of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Jake, Ryan, Scott, and Megan, all of Germantown, MD; sister, Carol Grubb and husband, Don of Solon, Ohio; and Joyce's family here in New Mexico. Dr. Freiwald received his B.S. in 1963 and his Ph.D in 1968 from Northwestern University. He worked at Sandia National Laboratories from 1967 to 1973, and at Los Alamos National Laboratories from 1973 to 1981, part of that time in the Director's Office. In 1987 to 1991, he was director and general manager of General Dynamics Laser Systems Laboratory in San Diego, CA. Dr. Freiwald has been recognized in numerous Who's Who including the Marquis "Who's Who in Frontier Science and Technology, Marquis "Who's Who in Science and Engineering," Marquis "Who's Who in the World ". He has served as President of the New Mexico Academy of Science. Other organizations and awards include, Tau Beta Pi, Pi Tau Sigma, and Sigma Xi. He was widely recognized for being innovative and had numerous patents. He was internationally respected and recognized as a leader in laser technology and defense systems, and contributed in plasma and shock wave physics. Dr. Freiwald was well known for his sense of humor. Memorial services will be held Saturday, June 28, 2002, 3:30 p.m., at French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to UNM Hospital Foundation--TSICU, 2211 Lomas Blvd. NE, 87106. Arrangements by French Mortuary, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE.

Robert E. Furby, 85, a resident of Albuquerque since 1936, died Saturday, June 22, 2002. Born in Greenfield, Missouri, his family moved to Clovis, New Mexico, when he was a small child. He attended the University of New Mexico and was in the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. During World War II, he held the rank of T/Sgt. in the USAAF and was assigned to the 97th Bomb Group stationed in Italy. He worked for the Clinton P. Anderson Insurance Agency as an account representative and later in the Surety Department until he retired to play golf. Bob was a member of the First Presbyterian Church for over 50 years. He is preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Arlene; his parents, Ralph D. Furby and Mae Evans Furby; and brother, Frank E. Furby. He is survived by his daughter, Kathryn Kortkamp and her husband, Karl; and
three grandchildren, Katie, Kevin and Kerry. Graveside services will be held on Thursday, June 27, 2002, at 2:00 p.m., at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd. NE, with The Rev. Myron White, officiating. The family requests memorial contributions be made to the New Mexico Boys and Girls Ranch, 6209 Hendrix NE, 87110. French Mortuary, 1111 University Blvd. NE.
